Are you new to Linux or have you tried a few different distro's?
I find having a few tiny linux distro's around is great for fixing
things like this. DistroWatch is good for scouting around and having a
quick look at a few. There's even a distro called 'SystemRescueCd'.

Hmmm, seems annoying. I like to keep my desktop clear and sometimes
reboot Ubuntu 8.10 just to clear the clutter i manage to build-up
through using different folders over the network here.
As a temporary work-around could you Add To Panel a Drawer applet and
have those links/shortcuts in the

sub-folder in 'My Documents' and place a short-cut to that sub-folder on

G that was freaky NOT FUN. lol
Only the items in the last box remained selected but i couldn't do
anything with them. The right-click menu worked but acted as tho the
mouse arrow was on an empty area of the desktop - i couldn't delete
anything. I could create new folders/documents and it
Ubuntu 8.10 with Nautilus 2.24.1, my cpu is an Amd and i trialled this
bug with and ati graphics card with proprietary driver enabled - not a
laptop. Both mices(?) mouses(?) errr, one mouse was a usb one and so
was the other mouse

Actually it's still not back to normal. I still can't do anything with
any of the icons on my desktop. The boxes are still there (but looking
pretty).
I can use the panel/taskbar applets and menu's tho and i'm able to
switch between the different desktops and between open applications.

I sometimes use rename on a folder with a similar name but do Ctrl C
(copy) rather than actually renaming it and then use Ctrl V (paste) in
the new folder and then tweak it.

Hopefully there's tons of junk in temp folders (be careful tho) or files
starting with a ~ sign that you might be allowed to delete (without
destroying the Windows boot, hopefully).
Personally i'd recommend forcing yourself to stay in Linux by losing the
Windows System files, just gradually
i think Pedro was just helping you collect relevant data so we could
look at why the bug happened and if it's reproducible on another machine
so we could fix it more easily. I don't think he was saying the wiki
would fix the problem, that happens later - i think.

Oh dear, sorry to hear that. I haven't got a clue how to help and
haven't tried this sort of thing myself. I'd try hunting around in
Synaptics Package Manager for a better tool for doing this. Have you
tried hunting upstream at Bugzilla? Google searches are sometimes good

Hmmm, someone suggested a workaround for part of this problem, maybe
there is other stuff in there that might be helpful but be careful of
the dragons ;) (you'll see what i mean)
In address bar type
about:config
instead of a urls location, now promise to be careful and find line
... that just deals with the problem of previous websites cropping up
when you type an address into the address box as it tries to guess what
address you are aiming for. It's not perfect either because if you set
the value back up higher than 0 it brings back some of those old
addresses - so

wow, i'm not finding this problem in Totem 2.24.3 with the splash screen
and don't remember it affecting me before either. I must be just lucky i
guess. I think i don't play stuff that's that high res in the first
place although i do play HD so i'm not sure - prolly just lucky there
too.

Yup. I dont see this as a problem, just an amusement. I think its
fixed in Ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10 anyway. Rhythmbox is clearly the default
music player and Movie Player opens Totem.

I tried reporting a bug but my report vanished so i'm trying again
Movie player screen filckers. It seems to be cycling through all the
open windows on my desktop. Also when i try opening a file browser (or
any other window) the player wont let
I've been having similar problems and trouble in reporting the bug as i
am new to using forums and a bit clueless really.
Anyway i found this on something that looks similar to me. Does this

errr actually when i ran gstreamer-properties it gave me slightly
different options but i changed the default output from autodetect to

I have this issue in jaunty when I try to click a link in gnome-
terminal. It didn't crash the instance of firefox I already had open,

I had a similar problem and found this way that fixed it for me (thanks
again Trab). If it is the same problem it might help you too. You can

Windows (try Applications menu, Accessories, Terminal - then try
gstreamer-properties(remember pressing the tab key does predictive text
style)

Compact view is great. When the scroll feature is fixed it'll be even
better. Compact is similar to a Windows standard but i prefer it
because it has variable widths depending on length of file-name.

no indication of how much space is empty in the desired
location (although i've never seen a file system offer both bits of
information which suddenly seems quite obtuse of them).

typo - where i said 'file system' i meant 'file-browser', obviously and
i wasn't sure it's up to the file-browser or the individual packages to
consider the issue

Sigh, it's clearly not enough to make me go back to #$*£^ Windows but i
kinda miss it when i do something dumb (quite often happens sadly)
Anyway, thanks all for your hard work in keeping me happy with Linux,

Oooops, that would be a no then - sorry.
In Windows when i right-click on an item within the red box i clumsily
drew on the 2nd attachment i get the full menu i would expect to find
within a normal file-browser window - including the options to open one
of those files or to create a new

Is the dvd player new?

I insert a DVD which contains several pdfs, but the the File browser cannot
display the contents of the DVD.

lol, that sounds really annoying.
I'm on 8.10 and it's not happening to me so there must be a way round
it. Good luck finding how though.

1. Is it the dvd-disc that works in another machine or the dvd-player?
2. Can you try another dvd-disc in the Linux machine's dvd-player?
3. Can you swap the players between the Windows machine and the Linux one?

Have you tried from the 'Places' menu up at the top (usually) aswell as
other routes?
