When I try to play the same file using mplayer instead of gmplayer,
everything works well.
The problem seems to lie only with gmplayer.
Here is the console output of mplayer with exactly the same .mkv file :

Looking at the difference in the outputs above, it appears that mplayer used
the xv driver while gmplayer used the ws driver.
When I checked the preferences in gmplayer, the video driver was set to
gl2 - this is the config that creates the error. I changed the video driver
of gmplayer to xv
I confirm that it still doesn't work using the kernel
2.6.35-28-generic in Ubuntu 10.10.

-no crashes in Windows XP

When I do
depmod nouveau
my Ubuntu 10.04 freezes and the computer needs to be power cycled.
The main graphic card in an NVidia 8800GTS, but there is also a Radeon
graphic card embedded on to the motherboard (M2A-VM).
The same graphic card was used previously

I tried the procedure using the linux-crashdump package, but
unfortunately there was nothing saved in /var/crash.
In more detail: I did:
echo 1 /proc/sys/kernel/panic_on_oops
as root, then played the video which crashed the system.
After reboot,
I also removed the module ati_agp using:
rmmod ati_agp
before playing the video, but the crash still occured.
