On playback I get a rough static that crackles corresponding to the
waveform intensity; on occasion the sound may start as noise and then
flip into proper sound output, but when paused the subsequent playback
will produce static and pausing that will crash the program. I
just re-ran this with Audacity 2.0.6-alpha-Oct 30 2013 from the ppa
:audacity-team/daily and I get this same behaviour, although I now

not to the other; both are Brother printers, the MFC-j6510DW prints
fine, but the Brother HL2270DW for CUPS goes through all the motions,
it even causes the printer to click once as if it is about to

send Print Test Page to the HL2270DW printer on 192.168.10.3, and
captured the printout on the 10.3 machine -- the printout is attached,

also experienced the same trying to create USB image on SanDisk 8G drive
and no persistent image using the 64-bit server 13.04 from both a 13.04
64-bit laptop and from a 12.10 32-bit laptop. The process hangs for
along time, the light on the USB throbs, and then the application

one to save a grub-rescue suspended server.

ok, situation solved I think: I did a cold reboot, shut it down, let it
sit for a few minutes, then restarted the machine, and voila, I have
sound -- so this was, as they say, stray capacitance (ie, wtf I dunno)
sorry, seems to be a false alarm, although I did learn alot about
debugging alsa ;)
not out of the woods yet, the admin account has sound, although the
paprefs unified sound output does not appear, and on the user accounts
the sound devices are still missing :(

switch to using the pavucontrol to set up my sound devices: the unified
paprefs device appeard in the pavucontrol lists, and when set the system
behaves as it did under Unity in 11.04, the same sound is now heard on both
this bug can be marked as closed now: Microsoft only has a 20% share
according to this video released today by the Linux Foundation

Definately a bug in there somewhere: on my system I can login, but when
the screensaver kicks in the X session collapses, the screen is blank
but when a key is touched it is full of these APCI messages. Hitting
return causes the X session to restart back to the initial login screen.
