[Bug 174909] Re: network-manager (pptp?) DNS doesn't work

I'm not sure to which package that .local issue should be moved. How
would we find out?

Thanks, that did the trick. That should probably be the default setting
for /etc/nsswitch.conf.

[Bug 178360] Re: [hardy] crash when choosing upload to picasa

2008-04-13 Thread Arthur Penn
Would it be the same bug if the crash occurs when importing pictures
into Picasa (specifically when clicking to choose the camera as part of
the import process)?

From http://groups.google.com/group/Google-Labs-Picasa-for-
Linux/browse_thread/thread/873a739464161bfb:

I updated my folks' computer with the 2.7 beta (http://dl.google.com/
linux/deb/pool/non-free/p/picasa/picasa_2.7.3736-15_i386.deb) on
Kubuntu Hardy. When they attempt to import pictures and select the
camera (a Kodak DX7630), the system freezes and they have to reboot to
regain control. Here's what they told me:

Yes, when I turn on the camera first Picasa does recognize it. I had
tried it both ways (it used to work either way) and (now I remember) it
did recognize the camera. However, the problem comes when I select the
camera - Picasa locks up and will do nothing but beep when I try to do
anything. I have to use your Alt, Print screen, s-u-b to get out of
it.

digiKam doesn't have any problem accessing their camera and importing
pictures. Any ideas? I'm going to revert them to the last stable
version to see if it clears it up. I know it worked under Kubuntu
Gutsy.

Thanks.

Aargh--I am setting this to invalid. I installed rkhunter and based on
its output was able to discover that an errant script in crontab (not
part of the distribution) was damaging the permissions. Sorry!

[Bug 174909] Re: network-manager (pptp?) DNS doesn't work

2008-03-23 Thread Arthur Penn
I upgraded an installation of Gutsy to Hardy and tried this again. It
does not use the peer DNS at all from what I can tell.

I have the Use Peer DNS checked under the PPP Options tab of the VPN
configuration. Also, on the Routing tab, Peer DNS through tunnel is
checked. I can see that it added the nameserver from my work domain to
/etc/resolv.conf as the second nameserver listed (the nameserver from my
router is listed first). However, no matter how I try to specify network
resources (short computer names or fully qualified with the Windows
domain name), dig doesn't produce any valid lookups. I definitely can
ping the resources by IP so I know the tunnel is working.

[Bug 174909] Re: network-manager (pptp?) DNS doesn't work

2008-03-23 Thread Arthur Penn
It seems that as long as that first nameserver is listed in resolv.conf,
it always gets used, and of course has no knowledge of my work's domain.
Should it not remove my router's nameserver when I connect the tunnel,
or is there an option to have it do this?

I tried commenting out the first nameserver. This indeed does force the
lookups to the nameserver over the tunnel. I get responses as long as I
fully-qualify the names of the resouces (e.g. computer.domain.local).

perhaps in some cases setuid bits, have been lost from many files.

[Bug 149489] Re: Stream of JRE errors when going to Macros tab in frame properties

2007-12-27 Thread Arthur Penn
I had the 'JRE is defective' dialog when clicking on the Tables tab in
OpenOffice.org Base. I have both the JRE 1.6 and JRE 1.5 installed. When
I went to Tools | Options | Java, no JRE was selected, and none was
visible in the selection area. I hit the browse button, went to
/usr/bin, and hit enter; even though the Java libs are not here, it then
displayed both the JRE 1.6 and 1.5 options in the selection area. I
canceled the browse, and then selected the 1.6 runtime. This corrected
my error.

[Bug 159669] Re: [Gutsy] Crash clicking on Gmail IMAP sent item with attachment

2007-12-26 Thread Arthur Penn
The only problem is that there are no files in /var/crash, so I have
nothing else I can send. It seems that by default core dumps are turned
off in Ubuntu (I've read /etc/security/limits.conf has to be edited to
allow these). I've edited this file, so perhaps I can generate a new
dump if I can get it to crash again. If this is the preferred method of
reporting, however, the wiki needs editing, as it sent me down the gdb
road.

[Bug 174909] network-manager (pptp?) DNS doesn't work

2007-12-08 Thread Arthur Penn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

I can successfully connect to my company's PPTP VPN with network-manager
and network-manager-pptp. The DNS, however, does not function properly.
When I connect, network-manager correctly overwrites my /etc/resolv.conf
with the DNS server from my company's network, but for some reason it is
duplicated:

--/etc/resolv.conf--
# generated by NetworkManager, do not edit!

nameserver 172.17.3.1
nameserver 172.17.3.1
--END /etc/resolv.conf

If I use dig to locate resources on my company's domain, they resolve
correctly when fully-qualified, as expected:

--dig output

qualified name, nothing works (ping, RDP (remote desktop on 3389),
etc.):

127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 host

172.16.3.248loubdc01
---END /etc/hosts fragment-

PING USING MANUAL HOST ENTRY:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ping loubdc01
PING loubdc01 (172.16.3.248) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from loubdc01 (172.16.3.248): icmp_seq=1 ttl=125 time=44.8 ms
64 bytes from loubdc01 (172.16.3.248): icmp_seq=2 ttl=125 time=45.6 ms

So while DNS appears to be working, network-manager is not using it. I
have had to put in hosts entries for all the servers I access because
effectively I must either do that or use the IP addresses to access
resources when connected.

[Bug 173503] sudo, su, and /lib/dhcp3-client/call-dhclient-script spontaneously lost owners, permissions

2007-12-02 Thread Arthur Penn
Public bug reported:

Out of the blue yesterday, my Ubuntu 7.10 installation had problems
sudoing. I then found su didn't work either. I fixed both problems,
described in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=251358, by
changing the owners and setuid flags as suggested in that post. Both
executables had lost their setuid bits and were owned by root:myuser
before the changes.

This problem extended to /lib/dhcp3-client/call-dhclient-script, which
prevented networking from functioning. That script had the following
permissions:

-rwxr-xr-- root myuser

Instead of the following as on the live CD:

-rwsr-xr-- root dhcp

I changed the setuid and group as on the live CD and it started working,
but why did all of these seemingly simultaneously lose their group and
setuid settings?

[Bug 159669] Re: [Gutsy] Crash clicking on Gmail IMAP sent item with attachment

2007-11-05 Thread Arthur Penn
Sure, the backtrace is attached. Note that to get the debug symbols from
the repositories mentioned I had to upgrade to the Evolution version
currently in the gutsy-proposed, but the problem still exists. Note that
this does not happen to all sent items with attachments--it seems to
happen to sent items with attachments that existed in my Gmail account
before I connected it to Evolution via IMAP. New sent items with
attachments do not crash Evolution.

[Bug 159669] [Gutsy] Crash clicking on Gmail IMAP sent item with attachment

2007-11-02 Thread Arthur Penn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I connected Evolution to Gmail via IMAP, and the folders are
synchronizing properly. If I have an email with an attachment in the
[Gmail]/All Mail folder, I can click on it without issue and view the
mail and attachment. However, if I click on the _same_ email with an
attachment in the Gmail/Sent Mail folder, Evolution crashes. Command
line output simply says segmentation fault.

[Bug 155547] Thunderbird typing in compose window is occasionally very slow

2007-10-21 Thread Arthur Penn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mozilla-thunderbird

Frequently when you are composing a new mail message in Gutsy's
Thunderbird there is a significant (2-3 seconds) delay before your
keystrokes are displayed on screen. There are a number of people having
this problem as evidenced by this Ubuntu Forums post:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=168478

I've also noticed that the Thunderbird package in general is slower than
it used to be in the 1.x series. Please help--this is making me consider
switching to Evolution.

[Bug 137843] Re: [gutsy] network-manager PPTP VPN connection succeeds but will not pass traffic

2007-09-24 Thread Arthur Penn
I updated to network-manager 0.6.5-0ubuntu14 today and it corrected the
problem. The only remaining thing I see wrong is that while
/etc/resolv.conf gets overwritten correctly with the peer DNS from the
VPN, the local routing doesn't seem to use it (e.g. I can use dig to
find servers over the VPN, but pinging those same servers results in
cannot find host errors).

Otherwise things are good, and I imagine I should look into reporting a
separate issue for that one.

[Bug 137843] network-manager PPTP VPN connection succeeds but will not pass traffic

2007-09-06 Thread Arthur Penn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

I upgraded my Feisty installation to Gutsy and patched it current
through today (6 Sep 2007). I had a PPTP VPN connection configured from
Feisty. I can connect the VPN still, but it does not pass any traffic,
and I lose internet connectivity (this all worked fine under Feisty).
When I disconnect the VPN, default network connectivity is NOT restored,
and I have to disable and re-enable networking to get my connection
back.

How do I identify my scanner to add to this quirks list? It is a UMax
Astra Net e3420.

Try the autosuspend parameter in /etc/modprobe.conf.local

The IDs so far reported have been added to the USB development tree.

[Bug 113726] Re: network-manager does not add routes for VPN connections

2007-05-19 Thread Arthur Penn
The internal IP range of the network I am connecting to is
192.168.157.0/8. When I have this set via the UI to use the VPN for that
range (gconf-editor key
/system/networking/vpn_connections/[EMAIL
PROTECTED]@Louisville/routes=[192.168.157.0/8]),
the kernel routing table reports the following after connection:

Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric RefUse Iface
65.112.80.5810.0.71.1 255.255.255.255 UGH 0 00 eth0
10.0.71.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 00 eth0
192.168.99.0* 255.255.255.0 U 0 00 vmnet8
192.168.205.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 00 vmnet1
default 10.0.71.1 0.0.0.0 UG0 00 eth0

The top entry is the external IP of the VPN, but note that there are no
entries for ppp0 (the VPN). If I clear this key, I can use the VPN, but
of course it is set as the default route and all traffic is going
through this interface.

[Bug 113726] network-manager does not add routes for VPN connections

2007-05-09 Thread Arthur Penn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

I installed the PPTP plugin. I can successfully make a VPN connection,
but network-manager does not add routes, making the VPN useless until I
issue a route command:

sudo route add -net 192.168.157.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 ppp0

I have a DHCP-assigned address, so there shouldn't be any issue with
network-manager and static IPs.

[Bug 84717] Re: SRU: updates necessary for Kubuntu Upgrade Tool in Edgy

2007-03-27 Thread Arthur Penn
It keeps telling me I have to free 11.2M of disk space on /boot in order
for the upgrade to continue. I only had 2 kernels installed (2.6.17-11
and 2.6.17-10); I removed 2.6.17-10 and it now wants less disk space,
but I still can't continue.

I have a 50MB (44.2 in Krusader) /boot partition.

Is there any way to get around this?

[Bug 67487] Re: [regression][rv280] black screen and console freeze when X starts - drm lockup

2007-02-02 Thread Arthur Penn
Monica/Tormod, thanks for your instructions. Before testing, I applied
Kyle's latest package at http://people.ubuntu.com/~kyle/xserver-xorg-
video-ati_6.6.2-0ubuntu6_i386.deb.

 - If you set the AGP speed in the BIOS from 8x to 4x, does the bug
disappear?

My BIOS only recognizes 1x and 4x AGP, and it's set to 4x.

 - If you comment out the line
# Load dri
in the modules section of your xorg.conf (while AGP speed is set to 8x in the
BIOS), does the bug disappear?

Yes. I have restarted X ten times in a row after doing this without
fail. This is the only thing that has corrected the intermittent
problem. In any other case, within 2-3 X restarts it goes to the black
screen and hangs.

- If you add
Option AGPMode 8
to the device section of the graphics card in the xorg.conf (while AGP speed is
set to 8x in the BIOS and dri is not commented out) does the bug disappear?

It does not unless the dri load is also commented out.

What do you think? Is it the same bug, or should I reopen the other
issue (how would I do that?). Thanks!

[Bug 79023] X won't start every other reboot (video mode change problem?) - Kubuntu Edgy

2007-01-12 Thread Arthur Penn
Public bug reported:

Kubuntu Edgy does not shut down cleanly. It tries, but after the screen
clicks to change video modes nothing else ever appears. The machine does
not shut down or reboot.

When I Alt+SysRq+S+U+B or pull-the-power-cord reboot it, the first time
coming up it never starts X successfully (it changes video modes after
briefly showing the Kubuntu screen, but never shows the wait cursor or
subsequent login dialog). Alt+F1 does not successfully bring up a
terminal. If I reboot it again, it will usually boot successfully the
second time. Sometimes a third reboot is needed.

Once X is started and I can login, the system runs great and I have no
video problems UNLESS I try to play SuperTux. When SuperTux starts and
it changes video modes the screen often (but not always) goes black and
the system freezes. I think the key thing is that it doesn't want to
change video modes.

I have pored over the log files trying to figure out what the problem is
and don't see it. I've attached several logs to my posting on
ubuntuforums.org (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=329505).

The video card is an ATI All-In-Wonder 8500DV video card. I am using the
open source radeon driver (ati), and I get nice video performance with
hardware acceleration. I tried using the fglrx drivers and, when I got
hardware acceleration, X would always hang when opening desktop windows
so it was unusable. If I disabled hardware acceleration, video
performance was very poor.

Please help!

To check whether this bug is the same as bug #29050 can you set the BIOS

[Bug 68497] Re: Kubuntu Edgy (release) hangs on boot

2006-10-27 Thread Arthur Penn
I think I discovered what the problem is--a problem with the video
driver the installation CD chose for my card caused X to hang when
trying to show the login screen. The installer detected the card
properly, but used the following settings:

Section Device
Identifier ATI Technologies, Inc. R200 BB [Radeon All in Wonder
8500DV]
Driver ati
BusID PCI:1:0:0
EndSection

Apparently the ati driver doesn't work reliably with the All in Wonder
8500DV. Only sometimes will X start. I can confirm this with the Kubuntu
live CD.

I installed the xorg-driver-fglrx package and changed the driver to
fglrx and have not had any more problems. Can anyone take a look at this
ati driver?

Thanks for your time!

[Bug 68497] Kubuntu Edgy (release) hangs on boot

2006-10-26 Thread Arthur Penn
Public bug reported:

I wiped my Windows machine a few days ago and installed the Kubuntu Edgy
release candidate. I then apt-get updated this current today. Over 50%
of the time (before or after the updates) I am unable to get the machine
to boot and display the login screen. It displays the initial Kubuntu
screen with the progress bar; the bar goes all the way across, and the
monitor clicks when it changes display modes, and then nothing appears
and the machine is unresponsive. Once hung, I cannot hit Ctrl+Alt+F1 to
get a terminal and have to hit the PC's reset button.

Looking at /var/log/messages, it gets past the messages about Bluetooth
from the kernel and then hangs. The next items in the kernel logs when I
am able to get it to boot are from gconf. I believe these appear when it
does display the logon screen and I enter credentials.

Once running, the machine seems to run great. I don't have any operational
problems until startup or shutdown. It does sometimes hang on shutdown as well.
When this occurs, it repeatedly:
* Shows the Kubuntu screen with the progress bar
* Has some hard disk activity
* Changes display mode and causes the monitor to 'click'
* Again shows the Kubuntu screen. This went on for some time before I reset
the machine.

Please help. I used Kubuntu 6.06 on an alternate machine and loved it. I
don't want to have to reinstall Windows!

[Bug 68499] Kubuntu Edgy alternate install CD gets confused with multiple CD-ROM drives

2006-10-26 Thread Arthur Penn
Public bug reported:

I have both a DVD+-RW drive and a CD-RW drive (both bootable). When
installing with the Kubuntu alternate installation CD booted from the

The CD-ROM drive contains a CD which cannot be used for installation.
