Re: [Bug 1870736] Re: [nvidia] Screen scaling 125% gives 200%
Fundamentally it's fair to blame nvidia's closed source drivers because the open source one seems to do fractional scaling properly. Other than that what's the point in assigning blame? I'm not sure someone is even paying attention to this bug report, I probably would turn off notifications if it were me volunteering and trying to repair a closed source blob going constantly hassled about not fixing it yet. We really need to learn to be patient. Maybe we can pitch in to pay someone to make the feature work. Until then... [Bug 1731911] Re: Xwayland crashed with SIGABRT in OsAbort()
I previously had bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome- shell/+bug/1724557 which causes the desktop to hard crash when the monitor is turned on, related to gnome-shell and mutter. That bug hasn't reported anything to /var/crash lately, but the behavior has stayed the same for me. If I turn my monitor off while playing music, when I turn it back on the desktop session has crashed and I have to start a new session. The music makes pretty clear that it is specifically related to the monitor turning on. Now the crash report coinciding with the crash of the desktop session with the correct timestamp is a duplicate of this one. [Bug 1724557] Re: gnome-shell crashed with SIGSEGV in meta_logical_monitor_get_scale()
I have still been experiencing crashes of the desktop whenever my monitor is turned back on. However, the /var/crash log is now reporting against Xwayland. I submitted a new bug report https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source /xorg-server/+bug/1733893 against this crash log as I am not sure if it is the same cause. For me the last crash log for gnome-shell is from the 19th, but the crash behavior has remained (mostly) unchanged. [Bug 1724557] Re: gnome-shell crashed with SIGSEGV in meta_logical_monitor_get_scale()
This bug may still be impacting me, but since I'm not 100% sure if the cause is the same I am not sure. It seems to have gotten better in some but not all situations. I did reboot to apply the released fix so this is the most recent versions hopefully. Perhaps useful to note that it doesn't crash until the monitor turns back on. I was able to test this because I play brown noise in a terminal with the monitor off but not locked overnight. In the morning sound is still playing, and I was able to Ctl-C without turning on the monitor to turn off the sound so it was still a responsive and logged in system until then. But then it crashed when I turned the monitor back on. I've uploaded the crash logs for the different methods of failure a few times using ubuntu-bug. I'm not certain that the logs are showing up, nor sure how to check. When I run ubuntu-bug on the crash file it opens the dialog for reporting a bug, I click continue but then the dialog immediately exits with no further user interaction. Is this correct behavior? I seem to remember years ago that the dialog would open up a web browser to this site but it hasn't done that in ages for me. [Bug 1092928] Re: asus ul30a resume broken very badly
Okay, I gave that one a shot. The image as a whole is pretty broken on my computer; probably some proprietary drivers? My screen resolution was very bad and seemed to be in VESA mode, and I had no functional wifi connection. I tried suspending and resuming a few times and it seemed to go okay, but in order for me to test it for longer periods of time I need to find how to get those drivers back into the kernel. dmesg did not display the same kinds of errors I have attached my lspci output. Sorry that I am not better equipped to diagnose this myself; sadly it's been probably 7 years since I had to compile my own kernel, so I've lost track of if I'm even still needing non-standard drivers! [Bug 1092928] Re: asus ul30a resume broken very badly
Hi Chris, Thanks for checking into this. So as per http://asus-ul30.wikispaces.com/UL30+Frequently+Asked+Questions+(FAQ) the BIOS 212 version breaks the VGA output by incorrectly requesting monitor resolution modes. I did have it installed at one point but this bug was so frustrating that I reverted to 211. It also introduces this bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power- manager/+bug/884717 which effects the screen turning back on on resume and seems to be an at large bug. Given these two issues with BIOS 212, my suspicion is that BIOS 211 is at least minimally more stable than 212, so I'd prefer to stick with that unless there is a strong reason to think that the issue is actually related. From reading the messages, it seems like the disk is timing out on resume, and that it works half the time suggests that there is some timeout in the resume system that is remounting as read only when it perhaps just needs to wait a bit longer. Is there a way for me to give something along those lines a shot? Once root is mounted read-only, I'm pretty much stuck as far as doing anything; not even sudo will work properly, so forget trying to remount stuff... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1092928 Title: asus ul30a resume broken very badly To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1092928/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1092928] Re: asus ul30a resume broken very badly
I managed to manually find some bug reports attributed to suspend resume that never got uploaded because chrome subsequently *also* crashed. Catch 22! I'm not sure how better to add them than to attach the .crash files in /var/crash to the bug report. However, when I try to do this it claims that the 822709 byte file is empty and refuses to attach it. I am not sure what else to do. If someone can provide me with instructions for taking a set of .crash, .upload, and .uploaded files and attaching it to this bug report, I will happily do so.
[Bug 1092928] [NEW] asus ul30a resume broken very badly
Public bug reported: I don't even know where to begin. I have an Asus UL30A laptop from 2010 or so which I recently upgraded to 12.10. Beyond the known continual bug with screen brightness not working properly, there is now a problem with suspend/resume that is so severe I can't use it. Suspend worked great on 11.10 and earlier. How can I figure this out when no programs work because of the bug? Very, very disappointed in this latest ubuntu release. It's rendered a perfectly functional laptop into a total disaster. [Bug 1092928] Re: asus ul30a resume broken very badly
Hi Brad, As you say, apport-collect will not run because the entire root filesystem is mounted read-only. I manually typed out the output of a few key commands to provide more information, and can do it again if necessary -- but since I can't cat anything to a file I am having to hand write all this out. These two were from inside the unity environment in a terminal. $cat /proc/mounts rootfs / rootfs rw 0 0 ... /dev/mapper/ubuntu-root / ext4 ro,noatime,nodiratime,discard,errors=remount-ro,data=ordered 0 0 ... I only put the two lines I think were relevant because autocorrect was really making this very tedious to copy. It seems to say that root is ro, unsurprisingly. $sudo mount -o remount,rw -t ext4 /dev/mapper/ubuntu-root / [sudo] password for neltnerb: sudo: unable to open /var/lib/sudo/neltnerb/0: Read-only file system mount: cannot remount block device /dev/mapper/ubuntu-root read-write, is write protected This was my attempt to remount the root filesystem as read-write, which as best I can tell either failed because sudo couldn't run on a read- only filesystem, or because of an underlying hardware level issue preventing the drive from remounting read-write. Then when I powered off, I saw this in the dmesg area: EXT4-fs (dm-1): previous I/O error to superblock detected Buffer I/O error on device dm-1, logical block 0 EXT4-fs error (device dm-1): ext4_find_entry:1209: inode #23593228: comm sh: reading directory lblock 0 with timestamps before each line, of course. This makes me think something really messy is going on. I don't know if it's an issue with my SSD (brand new INTEL SSDSC2CW480A3 (400i) as reported by the disks utility). SMART tests indicate no problems, although I haven't tried doing a more rigorous test of the drive. The fact that this error only shows up on resume from suspend is particularly strange. My best guess is that there is some hardware interaction between the SSD, hardware controller, kernel, and mount option setup that is failing miserably. I would also note that during the time that I was writing down these errors, I could not log in to a VTTY. My suspicion is therefore that there is a time delay involved somewhere. I managed to log in to unity from my locked screen from resume fast enough and open a terminal quickly enough that it was still sort of working, but by the time I got to the point of doing stuff even the login command was broken. I see nothing odd in /var/log for dmesg, pm-suspend, etc, but I might not know exactly what file might show bad behavior. I am skeptical that it would show much anyway given that the filestystem seems to have been set to read only at a level lower than the userspace mount command... In any case, I will mark as confirmed as instructed and hope that this amount of information is sufficient to explain the issue. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1092928 Title: asus ul30a resume broken very badly To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1092928/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1040201] Re: Wesnoth does not capture the ALT key.
Sorry, typo. ALT+R for recalling units does *not* work for me on 12.10. CTL+ALT+R for repeating the last recruit does *not* work for me on 12.10. ALT+S for the status table does *not* work for me on 12.10. While CTL+R for recruiting does work on 12.10. Further, the display manager keybindings for ALT work fine. CTL+ALT+L locks the screen fine. ALT+TAB brings up the application switcher fine. So it is not my ALT key. Further, in LibreOffice, CTL+ALT+C correctly inserts a comment, so it is not the display manager capturing *all* ALT keypresses and not passing them along. From the behavior it is extremely clear that ALT is not being captured by Wesnoth, and that this behavior is limited to Wesnoth. I don't know what further information I can provide given that I have the bug but you for some reason don't. However, it is very clearly valid to me. ** Changed in: wesnoth-1.10 (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid = New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1040201 Title: Wesnoth does not capture the ALT key. [Bug 1040259] Re: FFE: libmessaging-menu transitions for quantal
Thanks for the update Sebastien! That's very good news for me to hear! So, I have been using linux for a decade, but I have not been using Ubuntu nearly so long. What is the correct way to test the package from raring (I assume the next release name) in a mostly quantal system? Or would I need to upgrade entirely to test the new version of evolution-indicator? The way I would have done this in the past is add the raring repository to my system, install evolution-indicator using apt-get so as to get any necessary raring dependencies, and then change my repositories back go quantal (without running a dist-upgrade for sure). Is this still a reasonable way to approach this way, or is there something more clever available? Wonderful work! [Bug 1040259] Re: FFE: libmessaging-menu transitions for quantal
The pidgin-libnotify modifications in the PPA work for me. I haven't done a lot of testing, but a very far cry from the horribly broken state it is in on the main branch. For one, I can finally close pidgin and have it running from the notification bar again. Thank you very much for your work on this Jason! This was getting frustrating enough that I was about to downgrade back to 12.04 until this release was more stable, but your PPA works great! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1040259 Title: FFE: libmessaging-menu transitions for quantal To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gmailwatcher/+bug/1040259/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1040259] Re: FFE: libmessaging-menu transitions for quantal
On the other hand, I still see nothing for evolution. I'm a bit confused about the status. I see up on the main bar that it is reported as triaged, but down in the comments the best I can tell it has simply been removed entirely from support. Does triaged in this context mean that there are no plans to fix it but that it sort of works? I don't want to start a discussion about the merits of evolution versus thunderbird or whatever, but let's just say that some of us are set in our ways and would rather not have to learn yet another email program. =/ OTOH, is there a way to install an applet that will accept messages from the old libnotify library? If the new API can't be made to work with evolution, I'd rather use an obsolete applet than have either no evolution integration or be forced to downgrade.

[Bug 1049289] [NEW] Evolution has errors with automatically moving emails.
Public bug reported: This bug is new so far as I can tell with Ubuntu 12.10. I am using IMAP and IMAP+ for email accounts, and for all of them I see the same issue. I have seen similar issues reported for POP email accounts, but since I am not using POP I am unsure if it is a related problem. When I receive a message, I have attempted to set up filters to automatically move the message to different subfolders of my IMAP account inbox. However, when I do this I get error messages in orange such as: Error while Filtering new messages in 'INBOX'. Invalid folder URI 'folder://1225641857.12042.23%40zeeman/INBOX/Spam%20Folder' Similar messages occur on attempting to append messages to my sent-mail folder automatically (not with a filter). I think that this is basically resolved, and now the issue is just the original bug from 2009 reported here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/359361 With the exception that the alsa driver when loading and unloading sometimes needs to be completely reloaded via rebooting the computer. alsa force-reload used to work, but that command now seems to do nothing at all (no text to terminal, no change in behavior). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1040283 Title: Alsa does not allow connections either directly or from pulseaudio. [Bug 1040283] [NEW] Alsa does not allow connections either directly or from pulseaudio.
Public bug reported: In the latest update of Ubuntu 12.10, alsa stopped working properly on my: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller I have always had some issues with SPDIF out as described elsewhere, but now I can't connect to it at all. All of the volume settings appear to be correct, pulseaudio is running fine, and I can't see anywhere that could be an incorrect configuration. When I try to play a file directly to the alsa driver with: mplayer -ao alsa it reports back that the connection was refused. This behavior persisted with sudo as well, so not a permissions error. I tried using: alsa force-reload to reload the alsa driver, which did not change the behavior, regardless of whether I restarted pulseaudio. When I try to play a file directly to the iec958 port on the sound card with: mplayer -ao alsa:iec958 it reports Failed to initialize audio driver 'alsa:iec958' The only things I can think of are a bug in the audio subsystem, a bug in the alsa driver in the latest kernel update (3.5.0-11 versus 3.5.0-10 where it was working fine), a sudden inexplicable hardware failure, or some kind of user error that I'm unable to find. Given that I've been able to easily get this working plenty of times previously, I hope that it is not user error only. [Bug 1039256] [NEW] Evolution stops functioning when moving a message followed by clicking on an unread message.
Public bug reported: I can reproduce this bug in Ubuntu 12.10 using Evolution 3.5.5 by taking the following steps: Move a message to a different folder or sub-folder. Immediately click on an unread message. After doing this, you will still be able to interact with Evolution, click on messages, access the menus, etc. However, the bottom bar will show a ton of status updates and each time you click it will start a new one. However, the first one never resolves and the message is never moved. Meanwhile, new mail will not be downloaded. I found similar behavior when printing (which doesn't work at all for me for some reason). It says it is printing, and then refuses to complete any other action until the printing is finished. Even clicking the stop button on those status actions just makes them show (cancelling) next to the message, but it never actually cancels. Additionally, Evolution will refuse to go offline, and will refuse to close. The only way I have found to recover is to kill evolution with -9. Regular kill does not do it. Definitely a regression compared to the version in 10.04 and 11.10. Not sure about 12.04. Because this happens for a wide variety of tasks, it may already have been reported, but I do not know what exactly to search for. Sorry if it is a duplicate, but it is quite frustrating. Re: [Bug 999378] Re: package wesnoth-1.8-core 1:1.8.5-1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2
Great, thanks. I discovered this solution similarly. Sorry I didn't update the bug report, Ubuntu was doing it all automatically so I wasn't paying a great deal of attention. I had installed Wesnoth 1.10 because it was the most recent version, but then a friend of mine only had Wesnoth 1.8 and we wanted to play a networked game so I tried installing 1.8 in parallel. I guess the downfall of having multiple versions in the repositories designed to be installed side-by-side. Thanks for checking into it. On Wed, 2012-05-30 at 09:09 +, Gerfried Fuchs wrote: Actually, from looking closer, I've done it (almost) properly in 1.10 and never fixed the code in 1.8. If you install wesnoth-1.8 *before* you install wesnoth-1.10 (which is the usual flow of things, since wesnoth-1.8 is the older stable release ...) it works and the divert will stay with wesnoth-1.8. If you though install wesnoth-1.10 *before* you install wesnoth-1.8 you stumble into the issue. Installation order is important here, so if you want to have both versions around, first deinstall wesnoth-1.10, then install wesnoth-1.8 first and wesnoth-1.10 second. While I don't really understand why one would install wesnoth-1.8 after installing wesnoth-1.10, the fix for wesnoth-1.10 is like mentioned above dropping the whole divert handling, which I'll prepare within the next few days. It will flow into the soonish to be uploaded 1.10.3 version, and I'll extract that part and run it through the stable update process. Enjoy!
