[Bug 1617427] [NEW] some screensavers produce freezes when stopped
Public bug reported: I'm using Ubuntu MATE 16.04, as far as I can remember, the rss-glx package was installed by default. Reproduction: 1. Start the screensaver settings dialog: System / Preferences / Look and Fell / Screensaver. 2. From the list on the left pick an rss-glx screensaver. I did not do this test with all of them, but the following ones produce the freeze (in order of seriousness): plasma, biof, pixelcity, colorfire. 3. Let the preview run for a short while (~10 seconds was always sufficient in my case, YMMV). 4. Try to exit the dialog or switch to another screensacer (blank screen). 5. One of two things happen: a) The screensaver window freezes up, preview animation included. Looking az the offending screensaver process in top/htop will show a high CPU usage. Also, the offending process can not be stopped with SIGTERM, you likely will need to use SIGKILL on it. b) Complete system freeze. (I couldn't even switch to tty via CTRL- ALT-F1) About 30-40% of biof and pixelcity tests resulted in a complete freeze, and colorfire seems to consistently produce a system freeze. In colorfire's case, I had to temporarily uninstall rss-glx to be able to set the screensaver dialog to a state that will not produce a system freeze on just about any action that would normally result in colorfire stopping. I was able to reproduce the bug with the above steps with all 4 window compositor settings available in MATE Tweak, so Compiz / Marco does not seem to be the source of the problem. The bug also affects normal screensaver / screen lock use. I originally encountered the bug by setting the screensaver to random, then I noticed that whenever I interrupt pixelcity, it freezes and I don't get an unlock dialog. The phenomena described above also may be several separate bugs (one per mentioned screensaver). Also, some existing bugs (namely: #114783, #375819, #424782) seem to describe similar problems. [Bug 1599331] Re: mate-screensaver won't start when using Marco + Compton
This bug also may interfere with power management logic (mate-power-management). I set the session idle timeout to 1 minute (+blank screen instead a screensaver), display sleep timeout to 1 minute and computer sleep timeout to 10 minutes. (Note: I'm using a desktop machine, so battery events / power source states do not interfere.) Using Marco+Compton, the fade+reawaken glitch described above can be seen after 1:00. Then after 2:00 and 11:00 minutes, nothing happens. Using Compiz, the blank screen kicks in at 1:00, then the screen sleep at 2:00, then the computer sleep at 11:00, just as it should in the other case. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1599331 Title: mate-screensaver won't start when using Marco + Compton To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mate-screensaver/+bug/1599331/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1016603] Re: table design view handles field length non-intuitively
** Description changed: Table design view handles field length non-intuitively when picking different field types. For example: 1. Choose VARBINARY field type, the Length input field below gets filled with 2147483647. 2. Now pick CHAR field type, the Length input field remains the same (2147483647). - 3. Pick SMALLINT, the Length chanes to 5. + 3. Pick SMALLINT, the Length changes to 5. This behaviour _may_ be acceptable (some field types can have min-max lenghts, others are defined to be fixed length, etc.), but for the novice user it appears confusing. I suggest that: - For fixed length field types (TINYINT, BOOLEAN, REAL, etc.) the Lenth field should be _visibly_ disabled (grayed out). Right now, it is disabled, but this is not indicated by any shading, coloring, whatever. - The average user won't understand, why the Length is not changeable. + The average user won't understand, why the Length field is disabled. - When field types with min-max length restrictions are chosen, the GUI should clearly indicate the length limits. (Do not expect the novice user to read into the SQL standard for this.) - Have a default length value for every field type, and overwrite the length with it whenever the field type is changed. IMHO this is - especially useful when the user is creating the table the first time and - skimming through the varius field types. Accidentally assigning a CHAR - type length to be 2147483647 instead of 100 (see 1-2 steps above) should - be avoided. I guess that there are scenarios where the current behaviour + especially useful when the user is creating a new the table and skimming + through the varius field types. Accidentally assigning a CHAR type + length to be 2147483647 instead of 100 (see 1-2 steps above) should be + avoided. I guess that there are scenarios where the current behaviour (only touch the length value when changing to a field type, for which - the current length value is too high/low) is only safer when modifiing + the current length value is too high/low) is only safer when modifying an existing table structure - changing a CHAR field to VARCHAR for example. But that small safety is also lost after the user accidentally - picks a BOOLEAN or a VARBINARY type. So I guess if the we're creating a + picks a BOOLEAN or a VARBINARY type. So I guess if we're creating a brand new table column, then the length should be overwritten by a default tied to the field type, whenever the field type changes. And if we're in the middle of editing an existing column, the GUI should always remember the original length value and try to set it as a default, whenever a different field type is selected, and the length constraints of that field type allow the original length value. Otherwise it should set the length to the value that is closest to the original length. [Bug 1033598] Re: the CAPTCHA challenge in Ubuntu Software Center is much too difficult to solve for a real human being
@Tom Peterson And when the problems with this approach are clearly articulated (thank you, aarre), the official response focuses solely on ways to increase the bug heat rather than on ways to actually solve the problem. Dear Tom, what exactly makes you think that my response is official in any sense? FYI, let me tell you that I'm generally from the same breed of everyday Ubuntu community member, just as you are. Except maybe that instead complaining and blaming fellow users I: - posted the original bug report 3 years ago, - did some cleanup of duplicate bug reports, - gave some tips for others on bug heat, increasing the likelihood of getting this noticed by official maintainers. BTW, did you ever consider subscription to bug mail? While Aarre is completely right about the importance of this bug, I don't really see how ranting and blaming others solves anything or brings this bug closer to being noticed. Also please note that so far, there's no official response for this bug report. (Official meaning a statement originating from the maintainers of this project.) The /var/log/apt/history.log entry produced by the update is: Start-Date: 2015-02-03 22:51:31 Commandline: aptdaemon role='role-commit-packages' sender=':1.136' Install: linux-image-extra-3.13.0-45-generic:amd64 (3.13.0-45.74), linux-image-3.13.0-45-generic:amd64 (3.13.0-45.74), linux-headers-3.13.0-45-generic:amd64 (3.13.0-45.74), linux-headers-3.13.0-45:amd64 (3.13.0-45.74) Upgrade: linux-headers-generic:amd64 (3.13.0.44.51, 3.13.0.45.52), python3-software-properties:amd64 (0.92.37.2, 0.92.37.3), unzip:amd64 (6.0-9ubuntu1.1, 6.0-9ubuntu1.2), software-properties-common:amd64 (0.92.37.2, 0.92.37.3), linux-libc-dev:amd64 (3.13.0-44.73, 3.13.0-45.74), software-properties-gtk:amd64 (0.92.37.2, 0.92.37.3), linux-image-generic:amd64 (3.13.0.44.51, 3.13.0.45.52), linux-generic:amd64 (3.13.0.44.51, 3.13.0.45.52) End-Date: 2015-02-03 22:53:23 At first glance, I thought that the 3.13.0-45 kernel version fixed it. But then I rebooted into kernel version 3.13.0-44, and couldn't reproduce the original bug, neither. Since we are not sure if this is a kernel issue, I added upstart to the affected projects. If someone from the upstart maintainers is able to cross out upstart as the source of the bug, then I will open an upstream bug report against the latest kernel. To penalvch: halting instead of poweroff is not really a workaround IMHO. [Bug 1414494] Re: reboot after shutdown Gigabyte GA-P41T-D3 motherboard, Intel G41 Express chipset
I attached /var/log/apt/history.log which covers January. Some explanation on 2015.01.25-26 entries: 2015-01-25 11:05:48 Bunch of updates, looks like it was initiated by Software Updater. I didn't spot anything closely related to the bug, but then, I'm not really an expert on this... 2015-01-25 22:57:34 This was shortly after I encountered the bug. I googled around, looked at some other existing bug tickets, and found some general advice on how to check BIOS via the fwts tool. Unfortunately, I didn't found any official updates for my motherboard on Gigabyte's website, and also didn't really grok most of fwts's output. Start-Date: 2015-01-25 23:25:47 I switched from the nvidia to nouveau before trying to install a mainline kernel version. Start-Date: 2015-01-25 23:50:24 I installed the mainline kernel based on what I read at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds, this log entry marks the removal. [Bug 1414494] [NEW] reboot after shutdown Gigabyte GA-P41T-D3 motherboard, Intel G41 Express chipset
Public bug reported: This bug is pretty similar to the one described in #1409279: shutdown from GUI results in shutdown, some seconds of silence, then reboot. Hardware shutdown (holding power button for 4 secs) works OK. Last kernel update happened on 2015.01.10, but I just started noticing this bug today (2015.01.25), so it may not be a kernel issue. As I see, in similar cases the general practice should be to try the latest upstream kernel, so I guess I will try that as a next step. Any questions or advice on how to diagnose this properly is welcome. [Bug 1109790] [NEW] after some package updates ethernet stopped working + a weird wifi-related error appears on bootup
Public bug reported: This may be two errors, but until I know more, I will report it in a single report, because they appeared at the same time so they may be connected. After today's package updates (+ a reboot) the ethernet connection stopped working on my notebook. Network Manager doesn't show any ethernet connections anymore. I also ruled out general hardware malfunction by booting into WinXP, which can still make use of both eth0 and wifi. I suspect the following package upgrades may be involved: - isc-dhcp-client and isc-dhcp-common upgraded from 4.1.ESV-R4-0ubuntu5.5 to 4.1.ESV-R4-0ubuntu5.6 - upstart upgraded from 1.5-0ubuntu7 to 1.5-0ubuntu7.2 - ubuntu-minimal upgraded from 1.267 to 1.267.1 - bcmwl-kernel-source upgraded from 5.100.82.38+bdcom-0ubuntu6.1 to 6.20.155.1+bdcom-0ubuntu0.0.1 (After I post this, I will try downgrading the above and see if the bug ceases to happen.) Also I noticed that an error appears while booting, and managed to find it in the syslog, see attached syslog_part file. The error seems to be about wifi configuration but that is as much I can understand about syslog entries... Also it may be worth noting that the built-in wifi of the notebook has not worked with Ubuntu releases for ~2 years, neither does it now. (Sorry for the bug quality, I'm in a bit of rush right now, will add more details in a matter of days.) [Bug 1107653] Re: Major regression on Precise....(Fail to install and broke ALL the network)
I encountered the same bug on Ubuntu 12.04, see details in duplicate Bug #1109790. I tried downgrading bcmwl-kernel-source to the previous version via synaptic, but the process didn't finish (updateing initramfs was the last output line I guess). After about ~20 minutes, I restarted the machine, now Synaptic starts with a warning message (sorry, I didn't record it, it was about some broken cache I guess), then exited. On the second reboot, I could start Synaptic without any problems and succeeded in completely removing bcmwl-kernel-source package. Now eth0 works again and since the Broadcom wifi controller didn't really work in the last 2 years I don't miss the driver too much. In a couple of days I'm going to experiment with this a bit more, please feel free to suggest ideas on how to debug further. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1107653 Title: Major regression on Precise(Fail to install and broke ALL the network) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bcmwl/+bug/1107653/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1106305] [NEW] filtering out zero-balanced accounts doesn't work when a new transaction changes an accounts balance to/from zero
Public bug reported: Steps to reproduce: 1. Create a new file and two new accounts within it. 2. Open one account, then go back to the accounts tab. 3. Uncheck: View / Filter By... / Other / Show zero total accounts then click OK. As a result, both accounts disappear. 4. Now enter a transaction to the account you opened in step 2. with the other split pointing to the other account. After you finish the transaction, both accounts will have non-zero balances, but they will be still hidden on the accounts tab. 5. Workaround: open the Filter By... dialog again, check and uncheck the Show zero total accounts checkbox and see the account appear and disappear in the background. 6. The error also works the other way around: if you now delete the transaction entered in step 4. (thereby restoring the account balances to 0) the account won't disappear from the accounts tab afterwards. I guess gnucash is missing some event handling which notifies the accounts tab whenever an account changes its balance to/from zero. To Allan Rank: this is kinda confusing since the subdownloader package (2.0.16-2) depends on the python-kaa-metadata package in ubuntu. I'd guess you had some kind of installation problem earlier, which does not directly relate to the original bug. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/267464 Title: doesn't recognize mp4 files automaticaly (only when i press select video) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/subdownloader/+bug/267464/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1041819] Re: K3B doesn't recognize normalize-audio is installed
I copypasted the following comment from http://savannah.nongnu.org/bugs/?37194 If it works with the binary installed in /usr/bin/normalize, it's not a problem with normalize. The binary in this package has always been normalize, but is renamed normalize-audio in debian and derivatives. I'd guess that debian's k3b would need to be patched to account for the different name of normalize there. Let me know if I'm misunderstanding something here, but for now I'm going to close this since it sounds like the problem is elsewhere. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1041819 Title: K3B doesn't recognize normalize-audio is installed To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/k3b/+bug/1041819/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1041819] [NEW] K3B doesn't recognize normalize-audio is installed
Public bug reported: This bug was already filed in the KDE Bugtracking System on K3B project, see here: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=251479 See bug description + comment 1-2 there. Comment 2 on the above bug report mentions a workaround. As far as I understood the main problem is that KDE tries to find normalize audio by checking /usr/bin/normalize instead /usr/bin/normalize-auido . Now the workaround is about tricking K3B by renaming normalize-audio to normalize and then creating a script named normalize-auido in its place. Now my guess is that if someone made the workaround steps desctibed in comment 2 a step of the install procedure for normalize-audio, that would solve the problem of the K3B vs. normalize-audio integration. I guess waiting for the upstream K3B project to fix this issue is hopeless (the linked bug was posted ~2 years ago, nobody even cared to reproduce and confirm it). [Bug 1027645] [NEW] ferret dash icon problems
Public bug reported: Steps to reproduce: 1. Install ferret. (Via Software center, Synaptiy or apt-get.) 2. Problem 1: an icon (a question mark within a gray rectangle) for the new application appears on dash - I guess this is some kind of fallback icon, meaning ferret doesn't have any suitable icon on its own. 3. Problem 2: start ferret from the dash icon.
