Binary package hint: kpackagekit
I had to install both VirtualBox and Acrobat reader which come in isolated .deb
files (I mean I didn't setup repos for them, just used the .debs downloaded
from the sites with firefox).
Opening them from the desktop spawned kpackagekit
Happened to me after an update, some days ago. At home, it happened just
the same. Deleting the .kde directory in my home dir solved the problem.
I cannot do this at work because I have set up many options and I would
have to do it all over again...

Same thing happens also in Kubuntu with kde4. Every time I eject a
cdrom, it closes itself right back. Pushing the eject button again, it
stays open.

Just wanted to add that, with today apt-get update/upgrade,
networkmanager and knetworkmanager seem to have a much better behaviour.
They seem to have understood what I was trying to do and now it marked
my eth0 as Unmanaged with a Manual IP address.
I'm a happy man!

manual setup don't work
I solved this problem by creating a simple rule in the Windows
Behaviour, under System settings. I simply set, for any type of normal
window, to remeber the size. It works well, but I think this should be
the standard behaviour. Maybe it's possible to put a similar rule in the
standard kde default

I have a dhcp network with a range set up. If I leave it to work like that,
everything is fine. However, for security reasons, everyone that gets an IP

I think we must all be very very careful here. We have two very distinct
problems which show themselves with similar behaviour.
But, they're separated and must remain that way.
32 bit Ubuntu, within a particular (unknown??) set of circumstances (hw
config maybe) screwes up the usplash
Ok, I think I got what the problem is. And, unfortunately, I think the solution
is out of reach, at least for me.
It seems we x86_64 are simply short of a usable working vesa module! That's
right, because:
vesafb doesn't work with newer cards. The fact that with x86 it works, it's

Ok, that's good to know. However, switching to Hardy just to fix
kdebluetooth seems a little too much for me. Any chances of a backport?
Thanks!

It can't possibly be the X server, not right after the bootloader countdown!
I've seen the exact same behaviour with a notebook here. Try this: press escape
during countdown to access the grub boot menu. Keeping the default kernel
selected, press E to enter edit mode, jump on the line starting
This seems a duplicate of #155711. Try that solution also.

you. But the 7 release from medibuntu, it works for me. Maybe you can
try that.

Just a little clarification of my point of view.
I appreciate all the suggestion aimed at resolving my problem. I really
appreciate the (k)ubuntu community.
What I would like to see regarding this bug is, however, a solution to the
underlaying problem. What I see instead is trying to find an
Well, one day (less actually) away from 7.10 release, and this bug it's still
there. Shame. Fortunately, I came up with a solution: using acrobat reader 7
from the medibuntu repository does work. It's the only pdf viewer which prints
landscape documents correctly in kubuntu 7.10.
I can also add
Apparently, even the document viewer in ubuntu prints correctly.
So, it appears that if the viewer is intelligent enough to rotate the
document before sending it out to print, it's all ok, but if the viewer
relies on ghostscript to do the work (like kpdf, acroread v8 and even
plain lpr do, I
Just to add some fresh info on the subject:
In current Gutsy, the problem is still present. In addition, all PDF related
applications seems to have the same problem. I tried kpdf as well as Acrobat
reader and even printing a pdf from the command line using lpr. All have the
same behaviour of
Another thing: the unofficial package of kpdf mentioned by Daniel Frein,
compiled without poppler dependency, still works. I think, before Gutsy
gets released, something has to be done here. Maybe excluding poppler
completely. What's its use, anyway?

I made some further tests. The problem seems a little bit more complex
than I thought. To avoid wrong conclusion, I simply report here the
tests I've done:
Using a .ps produced with the gutsy repos kpdf, on a debian etch machine
the file opens correctly in kghostview and also prints correctly.
I had this same behaviour this morining when upgrading Gutsy. I think I
found a way to restore the original behaviour, and even a possible
cause, although very strange.
This morning update got interrupted because a file couldn't be
downloaded. The update I thought it was finished instead never
