[Bug 1594586] [NEW] Unable to use Nvidia proprietary drivers on Secureboot system
Public bug reported: Hi, I did a clean installation of Ubuntu 16.04. Once complete and updates applied, I then specified the Nvidia proprietary drivers (currently version 361). I was able to install, then reboot, but kept getting stuck at the login screen. Research indicates that in order to use Nvidia drivers, I have to disable Secure Boot. Since I also have Windows 10 installed, UEFI (ie. Secure Boot) is a mandatory requirement and cannot be disabled. I will not be able to use Ubuntu 16.04 until such time as this issue is fixed. [Bug 1245064] Re: Keyboard Layout Options window is missed in gnome-control-center keyboard
Unfortunately, the options mentioned by Sean Fitzpatrick do not include the option for Shift with Numeric Keypad works as in MS Windows. I am quite certain that there are a number of other options that different users require that are not found in the terminal version of the reconfiguration package. I am not the most technical of people, so I may get something wrong: 1/ Reading the above posts, I am under the impression that this option was removed in the name of simplification by upstream Gnome. If this is right, then there are two options: - Upstream Gnome should change back and include the options as part of the keyboard layout definition utility. - If Upstream Gnome will not make the change, then Ubuntu should include this as part of their configuration. 2/ Unless there is new information of which we are not aware, Upstream Gnome has not committed to reverting the change. 3/ Given that 14.04 is due to be released in 3 months or so, and any changes need to be tested, I would like to suggest that a utility to manage the keyboard setup should be developed for Ubuntu. I'm not so sure that it should be in the Unity Tweak tools, since the supported derivatives (Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Gnubuntu, etc.) do not use Unity and therefore may not install the tweak tools for Unity. 4/ In an ideal world, the utility would be included as part of the default installation, but there may be compelling reasons (space) why this may not be possible. If the goal is still to be able to install using a CD, then the ideal world would probably not be achievable. 5/ Whatever the outcome, two things are clear: - There needs to be a solution that includes an easy, GUI-based option to configure the various options on the keyboard, and - If the change is not reverted by Upstream Gnome, then it is a change that needs to be properly documented and easily accessible in the Release Notes for Ubuntu 14.04. There are a lot of us who use various keyboard configuration options and in order to continue being able to do so, we should not have to resort to 'hand editing' configuration files to use functionality that has been easily available for as long as I've used ubuntu (six years). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1245064 Title: Keyboard Layout Options window is missed in gnome-control-center keyboard To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-control-center/+bug/1245064/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 25695] Re: evolution message text appears backwards when replying to html mail
Actually, I have just encountered this bug for the first time in Ubuntu 12.04.1. I have Evolution 3.2.3 installed from the repositories. Happens exactly as described - if I reply to a message using HTML, then when I type each character, the cursor moves to the left instead of moving to the right. Does not happen in any other application, does not happen if I reply to a Plain Text message - only happens if I am replying to an HTML message. I hope this helps, and I do hope that there is a fix identified. The workaround is to type my reply in LibreOffice, then copy and paste into the reply - kudgey to say the least. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to the bug report. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/25695 Title: evolution message text appears backwards when replying to html mail To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/libgtkhtml/+bug/25695/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 412862] Re: AOD250 microphone problem
Someone insists that bug 549514 is a duplicate of this bug. That bug is trying to get sound working correctly on an Acer Aspire 8942G (quite a different machine than the Acer Aspire One). I have run two commands that may provide some additional information. The output from aplay -l and lspci are shown below. To my eyes, it appears that ubuntu is loading a generic sound driver instead of the sound driver for the specific card, but I am not an expert. If someone who has more experience could take a look, and maybe suggest a solution, then I would be most grateful. I am comfortable editing configuration files (like /etc/modprobe.d/alsa- base.conf), but I am not ccomfortable compiling programs. [Bug 549514] [NEW] Sound problems with Acer Aspire 8942G
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: pulseaudio The Acer Aspire 8942G has an internal sound card and 5 speakers to support 5:1 Surround sound. They are called CineSurround 5:1 in the marketing material. When installing ubuntu (9.10 or 10.04 Beta 1), the sound card can only recognise two channel stereo. In addition to the PulseAudio output, I am attaching the output from lshw for multimedia. What should happen is that the sound card is recognised as supporting 5:1 surround sound, appropriate configuration options provided, and sound should come out of all five speakers. At the moment, the sound only comes out of two speakers (on the right). The second problem is that the integrated microphone does not work at all. It is recognised, but no matter how high the input volume is raised, there is no sound recorded. The final problem is that the headset jacks do not work as expected. When I plug in a headset (yes, I have checked to make sure that the jacks are right and the headset volume is set), I would expect sound to come out of the headphones and the to be able to record sound through the microphone. I get no sound and there is no recording. I can only attach one file, so I will add a comment to attach the output for lspci in a comment. Daniel. I understood part of your suggestion and have added the ppa to my software sources. Once this was installed, I was able to install the alsa driver from synaptic. [Bug 401521] [NEW] Unable to restore Evolution from backup file at startup
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evolution Use Case: 1. In Jaunty, do a backup of Evolution using File Backup Settings. This should be done to an external drive. 2. Do a clean install of Karmic (alpha 2) and apply all updates (as of Jul-19-2009). 3. Start Evolution. The initial panel should appear. 4. Select Forward. There is a screen that should allow you to specify that you wish to restore from backup. 5. Select the checkbox (we do want to restore from a backup) and locate the backup that was made in Step 1. 6. Select the Apply button. There is a delay once the Apply button is selected before anything happens. 7. The Restore screen appears, and suitable progress is indicated. After a period of time, the screen disappears, indicating that the backup is complete. 8. The expected result is that Evolution will open and all folders, mail, contacts, accounts, and calendar entries will appear. The actual result is that the initial panel (described in Step 3) is redisplayed. It appears that the restore process is not working. When the .evolution folder is checked, there are only the standard contents - none of the contents that were in the backup will appear. [Bug 347034] Re: External Drive not recognised at boot
JM. Candelay - glad the majority of your problems are solved. Unfortunately, your first sentence, installing Ntfs configuration tool, and starting system first then switching on external drive second solved this one for me ... is exactly the problem that is reported. Like you, if I start the system first, then either plug in, or turn on, the external USB drive, then the drive automounts and works correctly. The issue is that in previous versions (8.04 - 8.10), the drive was recognised when the system was booted without having to either plug it in or turn it on. I want that behaviour back. I'm not sure if I am supposed to do something with Brian's entry. I'm a relative newbie, so if there is something that I need to do, then I will need specific instructions. I don't know if this helps, but from a cold boot: 1. The BIOS boots and appears okay. 2. The GRUB menu comes up and proceeds to the next stage. 3. I get an ATA1 soft reset error. Not sure what that is about. 4. I get a Fatal Error. There is a module that doesn't load. The message goes too fast for me to read the details of the message. 5. The ubuntu splash screen starts up. If someone can tell me how to pause between 4 and 5 above, then I would be able to read the details of the error message that is displayed in 4. That might provide enough information to correct the problem. Please note that on this machine, the external drive was recognised at boot-up, so there is some change between 8.10 and 9.04 that is causing the problem. [Bug 298342] Re: New Icons and Proper Names for Applications for Open Office
Two comments: 1/ Don't know who made the 'design choice', but the names selected by Ubuntu are not more friendly, in my opinion. 2/ The issue of the icons has not been addressed. These should be subject to theming, which is not the case with the icons that are used in the OpenOffice 2.4 that is installed by Ubuntu. For these reasons, I object to the bug being classified as 'Invalid' without further discussion. I would like to suggest that the 'design choice' should be revisited. Re: [Bug 162984] Re: [needs-packaging] Nimbus GTK theme
Christian: I agree with the notion of the Screenshot, and as soon as I figure it out, I will add one. I also agree with the notion of supplying an Ubuntu package, but not necessarily a Debian package. The reason for excluding Debian is the logo in the top title bar - we would have to have a separate release for Debian. It's something that we can look at for the future, but I'd like to stay with an ubuntu release for the moment. Hopefully, you will concur. I am attaching a screenshot with a plain background. Have a look at the trashcan in the lower-right corner. This is the trashcan from nimbus. If you compare that to the trashcan in your screenshot, you will see that they are quite different. I agree that we need to identify those cases where the icons differ between ubuntu and nimbus and determine how to best correct the deficiencies that we find. I am also grateful for your offer of being a tester, and I will set you up as a tester once I've figured out how to do that. Many thanks, Flavelle On Sat, 2008-11-22 at 14:05 +, Christian Wolf wrote: I will assist you as far as I can, you can add me as tester. By the way, I mixed Nimbus with the Mac4Lin cursors (beautiful animated), a Mac4Lin wallpaper and the Mist icons - looks IMHO also very nice, see attached screenshot. My first suggestion would be to add a screenshot to your project page on Launchpad: https://launchpad.net/nimbus-ubuntu and to extend the scope to customizing AND providing Debian/Ubuntu packages for Nimbus. Also, we could contact upstream maintainers if they maybe will provide additional icons for Ubuntu, as Sun and Canonical seem to have a good relationsship. Some more indepth testing also needs to be done - there are possibly icons missing or at the wrong place in the Ubuntu builds that we have not yet discovered. When I build the debs, I'm not given an option to specify 'Conflicts:' Do you have any idea where that goes? These are the instructions that I have to build the debs. Please note that the last step is where I set up the name and version number information. ./configure --prefix=/usr Prepare the files necessary to compile the theme makeCompile the theme sudo checkinstall --fstrans=no --install=no Check and make sure that all is okay. If you add Conflicts: gtk2-engines-nimbus to the control file, gtk2-engines-nimbus will be removed from aptitude before installation of your package is possible, so the error would not occur (at least I think that will happen, have not tried :-) ) The other question is wether your package name (nimbus) or gtk2-engines- nimbus follows the standards for package names of desktop themes - a question I have no answer for. [Bug 162984] Re: [needs-packaging] Nimbus GTK theme
I've started the 'learning curve' for how to properly package the nimbus package and how to maintain it going forward. The learning curve is steep, since I'm coming from ground zero. I have placed the source and my current debs on http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=046374f71330ec4dab1eab3e9fa335ca1691171a9aedb7a6 I would appreciate it if someone could start looking at these and give me some advice on how to properly package these. I will update the contents at this site as I go through the learning curve, as well as add thoughts and progress on this bug report. [Bug 162984] Re: [needs-packaging] Nimbus GTK theme
I have a couple of questions: 1. I have setup a project in Launchpad, nimbus-ubuntu. I haven't figured out how to do a code import yet. If someone knows how to import the code from my machine into launchpad, then could they tell me how. The code is currently stored on a directory in my machine. 2. How do we find out what the icon naming convention should be for ubuntu? 3. How do we find out what the icon naming convention is in nimbus? Once we know these things, then we can figure out how to get from point A (nimbus on OpenSolaris) to point B (nimbus on Ubuntu). Along the way, we may learn a few things. I would like to suggest that we start with the nimbus 0.1.1 from the Sun site. Also, I will be happy to set people up as contributors, if they wish. The gtk2-engines-nimbus is included in the package. I'm sorry, but I don't read German, so is it possible that you could provide some specifics on the error message that you are getting. [Bug 162984] Re: [needs-packaging] Nimbus GTK theme
The latest Nimbus upstream is version 0.1.1, which is quite a bit up from 0.0.17. I was able to make two packages that fully installs the themes - one for i386 and the second for 86_64. The package installs the icons and the appropriate gtk-engine. [Bug 162984] Re: [needs-packaging] Nimbus GTK theme
I'm not sure how to do this - I've only been using Linux/Ubuntu for six months, but I do have the latest Nimbus themes and gtk-engine (version 0.1.1 from Sun) customised for ubuntu in both i386 and x86_64 debs. If there is someone who wants to help me learn how to package these for inclusion in ubuntu, then I will take it on. It would also be helpful if there was someone who was a GTK theme expert - I'd like to learn more about GTK themes in general, particularly in the use of the make and install files. It has been a very long time since I have programmed in C. I am attaching a screenshot of my desktop with Nimbus applied. I am running 8.10 AMD64 on this machine and installed Nimbus from my .deb file. ** Attachment added: Screenshot.png http://launchpadlibrarian.net/19668026/Screenshot.png -- [needs-packaging] Nimbus GTK theme https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/162984 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 267376] Re: [Request] OpenOffice.org 3.0 in Intrepid ibex release
Clearly there is an overwhelming desire on the part of the users to have OpenOffice 3.0 in Intrepid. In normal circumstances, I understand that there should be no delay in releasing Intrepid. The fact that an application is not released in stable enough form to be included is not normally a reason to delay the release. OpenOffice is a core application - it is one of the primary applications that is a 'seller' for Linux. The fact that it is included and installed by default is an important consideration. If Intrepid cannot be delayed, then I would suggest that ubuntu should release Intrepid 8.10.1, with the key requirement that OpenOffice 3.0 is included. I understand that this is normally done only for an LTS release, but I would suggest that these are exceptional circumstances. It is important, especially for new users, that their first experience with ubuntu is a positive one. The fact that OpenOffice 3.0 is out there, but not included in an initial installation of ubuntu will detract from the experience. Not sure who needs to be involved in the decision, but I think most users would agree that waiting six months to have OpenOffice 3.0 included in a standard ubuntu installation is not acceptable. Actually, it would be perfect if sbackup would report on whether the backup failed or succeeded!
