[Bug 1594586] [NEW] Unable to use Nvidia proprietary drivers on Secureboot system

2016-06-20 Thread Flavelle
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I did a clean installation of Ubuntu 16.04. Once complete and updates
applied, I then specified the Nvidia proprietary drivers (currently
version 361). I was able to install, then reboot, but kept getting stuck
at the login screen.

Research indicates that in order to use Nvidia drivers, I have to
disable Secure Boot. Since I also have Windows 10 installed, UEFI (ie.
Secure Boot) is a mandatory requirement and cannot be disabled.

I will not be able to use Ubuntu 16.04 until such time as this issue is
fixed.

I am reporting this as a security issue, since Secure Boot is a
requirement for my system.

Thanks!

[Bug 1314556] Re: Unable to mount Android MTP device

2015-01-23 Thread Flavelle
Earlier this week - probably Monday (Jan-19-2014), I was able to mount
my Samsung NotePro 12.2 and copy my music to it. Friday (Jan-23-2014), I
am not able to. I think this was due to some upgrades.

I'm not sure what additional information you need, so please let me know
and I will be happy to provide it.

[Bug 1245064] Re: Keyboard Layout Options window is missed in gnome-control-center keyboard

2014-01-19 Thread Flavelle
Unfortunately, the options mentioned by Sean Fitzpatrick do not include
the option for Shift with Numeric Keypad works as in MS Windows. I am
quite certain that there are a number of other options that different
users require that are not found in the terminal version of the
reconfiguration package.

I am not the most technical of people, so I may get something wrong:

1/ Reading the above posts, I am under the impression that this option
was removed in the name of simplification by upstream Gnome. If this is
right, then there are two options:

- Upstream Gnome should change back and include the options as part of the
keyboard layout definition utility.
- If Upstream Gnome will not make the change, then Ubuntu should include this
as part of their configuration.

2/ Unless there is new information of which we are not aware, Upstream
Gnome has not committed to reverting the change.

3/ Given that 14.04 is due to be released in 3 months or so, and any
changes need to be tested, I would like to suggest that a utility to
manage the keyboard setup should be developed for Ubuntu. I'm not so
sure that it should be in the Unity Tweak tools, since the supported
derivatives (Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Gnubuntu, etc.) do not use Unity
and therefore may not install the tweak tools for Unity.

4/ In an ideal world, the utility would be included as part of the
default installation, but there may be compelling reasons (space) why
this may not be possible. If the goal is still to be able to install
using a CD, then the ideal world would probably not be achievable.

5/ Whatever the outcome, two things are clear:
- There needs to be a solution that includes an easy, GUI-based option to
configure the various options on the keyboard, and
- If the change is not reverted by Upstream Gnome, then it is a change that
needs to be properly documented and easily accessible in the Release Notes for
Ubuntu 14.04.

There are a lot of us who use various keyboard configuration options and
in order to continue being able to do so, we should not have to resort
to 'hand editing' configuration files to use functionality that has been
easily available for as long as I've used ubuntu (six years).

[Bug 25695] Re: evolution message text appears backwards when replying to html mail

2012-09-22 Thread Flavelle
Actually, I have just encountered this bug for the first time in Ubuntu
12.04.1. I have Evolution 3.2.3 installed from the repositories. Happens
exactly as described - if I reply to a message using HTML, then when I
type each character, the cursor moves to the left instead of moving to
the right.

Does not happen in any other application, does not happen if I reply to
a Plain Text message - only happens if I am replying to an HTML message.

I hope this helps, and I do hope that there is a fix identified.

The workaround is to type my reply in LibreOffice, then copy and paste
into the reply - kudgey to say the least.

[Bug 587080] [NEW] Intel 5 series/3400 card not being configured correctly for sound

2010-05-28 Thread Flavelle
Public bug reported:

I have an Acer Aspire 8942G laptop that contains the Intel 5 Series/3400
card. That card provides surround sound capabilities. When Ubuntu 10.04
is installed, it is configured as stereo, but sound comes out of only
one speaker - the right front. If I'm given some help, then I will be
happy to provide whatever is required to get this card working
correctly.

I can follow terminal commands, although compiling software might prove
to be a challenge for me - I'm not highly technical. I have enabled the
ubuntu-audio-dev ppa, and have the linux-backports-alsa-lucid-server and
linux-backports-alsa-lucid-generic installed.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

[Bug 412862] Re: AOD250 microphone problem

2010-05-20 Thread Flavelle
Sorry if I am misunderstanding. Is this bug currently being worked on,
and if it is, is my specific problem (sound on an Acer 8942G) being
included.

If the answer is 'no' to either question, then could someone kindly
remove the duplicate from bug 549514 so that it can get worked on? I am
still having the problem and I'm not sure if there is a solution.

If the answer is 'yes' to both questions, then please accept my thanks,
and please tell me if there is any further information that I can give
you.

I appreciate all of the good work. This is the first significant problem
that I have had with ubuntu in two years, but it is a big problem for
me.

Many thanks,

[Bug 412862] Re: AOD250 microphone problem

2010-05-17 Thread Flavelle
Someone insists that bug 549514 is a duplicate of this bug. That bug is
trying to get sound working correctly on an Acer Aspire 8942G (quite a
different machine than the Acer Aspire One). I have run two commands
that may provide some additional information. The output from aplay -l
and lspci are shown below.

To my eyes, it appears that ubuntu is loading a generic sound driver
instead of the sound driver for the specific card, but I am not an
expert. If someone who has more experience could take a look, and maybe
suggest a solution, then I would be most grateful.

I am comfortable editing configuration files (like /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-
base.conf), but I am not ccomfortable compiling programs. As long as the
instructions are detailed and complete, then I will be most grateful for
any help you can give me.

Many thanks,

[Bug 549514] Re: Sound problems with Acer Aspire 8942G

2010-04-25 Thread Flavelle
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 412862 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/412862

This bug is primarily around the sound output, not the sound input. In
particular, the fact that the sound card supports 5:1 sound, which works
in Windows, but not in ubuntu - all sound comes out of the two speakers
on the right. The referenced but (412862) is primarily around the
microphone - and doesn't address the sound card at all.

Please remove the duplicate status. Any suggestions to solve this
particular problem would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

[Bug 549514] [NEW] Sound problems with Acer Aspire 8942G

2010-03-27 Thread Flavelle
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

The Acer Aspire 8942G has an internal sound card and 5 speakers to
support 5:1 Surround sound. They are called CineSurround 5:1 in the
marketing material. When installing ubuntu (9.10 or 10.04 Beta 1), the
sound card can only recognise two channel stereo. In addition to the
PulseAudio output, I am attaching the output from lshw for multimedia.

What should happen is that the sound card is recognised as supporting
5:1 surround sound, appropriate configuration options provided, and
sound should come out of all five speakers. At the moment, the sound
only comes out of two speakers (on the right).

The second problem is that the integrated microphone does not work at
all. It is recognised, but no matter how high the input volume is
raised, there is no sound recorded.

The final problem is that the headset jacks do not work as expected.
When I plug in a headset (yes, I have checked to make sure that the
jacks are right and the headset volume is set), I would expect sound to
come out of the headphones and the to be able to record sound through
the microphone. I get no sound and there is no recording.

I can only attach one file, so I will add a comment to attach the output
for lspci in a comment.

[Bug 549514] Re: Sound problems with Acer Aspire 8942G

2010-03-27 Thread Flavelle
This is the lspci output for the Acer Aspire 8942G.

I also failed to mention that I am running ubuntu 10.04 Beta1, but I
have the same problem with ubuntu 9.10. I would like the problem fixed
for 10.04, but I suspect there may be others who would like to have the
problem corrected for 9.10 as well.

Thanks

[Bug 549523] [NEW] Keyboard Indicator cannot be added to panel in 10.04 Beta1

2010-03-27 Thread Flavelle
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

In versions of ubuntu prior to 10.04, I could right-click on the top
panel, select Add to Panel, and get a list of items that could be added
to the top panel. One of these items was the Keyboard Indicator. In
10.04 Beta, I can right-click on the top panel, select Add to Panel and
get a list of items that can be added to the top panel.

The list no longer includes the keyboard indicator. Since I use three
languages and two different keyboards, this is an absolute necessity for
me.

[Bug 549514] Re: Sound problems with Acer Aspire 8942G

2010-03-27 Thread Flavelle
Daniel. I understood part of your suggestion and have added the ppa to
my software sources. Once this was installed, I was able to install the
alsa driver from synaptic.

This resulted in improved stereo sound, but no options to do the 5:1
surround sound. The headphones still do not work.

I don't understand the second part of your instruction, to put the
appropriate (uname -r) after -modules. But at least the sound is better
than it was. Thanks!

mail, calendar, settings, etc. were correctly restored.

Many thanks for your efforts on this!

[Bug 408603] Re: Evolution not restoring data from backup archive

2009-08-30 Thread Flavelle
Sorry, relatively new to bug reporting process.

If I'm reading the notes above correctly, then supposedly the problem is
fixed.

I just did an absolutely clean install of Karmic Alpha 4, with all
updates applied prior to trying to set up Evolution from a backup file.
It did not work.

This is important that this works, since this is one important function
for those of us who do clean installations to update ubuntu to a new
release.

evolution 2.27.90-0ubuntu2 is the version that is installed.

[Bug 421503] [NEW] Nautilus does not close

2009-08-30 Thread Flavelle
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Nautilus appears to remain open. This shows up when attempting to
restart in Karmic.

To reproduce:

1. On a clean installation of Karmic (Alpha 4) with all updates applied as of
Aug-29-2009, perform the following actions:
a. Select places, then Home. Copy a file from one location to another.
b. Delete a different file.

2. Close Nautilus

3. Select System Shut Down ... Restart

4. Observe a warning that there are instances of Nautilus running. You
are given the option to Cancel or Reboot.

Given that we supposedly closed Nautilus (see step 2 above), we should
not be getting this warning.

[Bug 401521] Re: Unable to restore Evolution from backup file at startup

2009-07-20 Thread Flavelle
I have added a report upstream, here:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=589114

I suspect that you have a relationship with the upstream folks. I
noticed that this bug showed up on prior versions of Evolution. The
process, which is a common one for many users, should be part of a
standard set of regression tests that need to run correctly prior to
release of any version of Evolution. Any additional encouragement or
assistance that you could provide to the upstream folks in fixing this
would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

[Bug 401521] [NEW] Unable to restore Evolution from backup file at startup

2009-07-19 Thread Flavelle
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Use Case:

1. In Jaunty, do a backup of Evolution using File Backup Settings. This
should be done to an external drive.
2. Do a clean install of Karmic (alpha 2) and apply all updates (as of
Jul-19-2009).
3. Start Evolution. The initial panel should appear.
4. Select Forward. There is a screen that should allow you to specify that you
wish to restore from backup.
5. Select the checkbox (we do want to restore from a backup) and locate the
backup that was made in Step 1.
6. Select the Apply button. There is a delay once the Apply button is selected
before anything happens.
7. The Restore screen appears, and suitable progress is indicated. After a
period of time, the screen disappears, indicating that the backup is complete.
8. The expected result is that Evolution will open and all folders, mail,
contacts, accounts, and calendar entries will appear. The actual result is that
the initial panel (described in Step 3) is redisplayed. It appears that the
restore process is not working. When the .evolution folder is checked, there
are only the standard contents - none of the contents that were in the backup
will appear.

This is a critical bug, since many users, myself included, to a re-
install whenever we upgrade and the restore capability in evolution is
absolutely critical for the success of that process.

[Bug 347034] Re: External Drive not recognised at boot

2009-05-07 Thread Flavelle
May-7-2009: Latest updates from ubuntu included a partial upgrade to

but this represents definite progress.

[Bug 373047] [NEW] Can't print Index Card on HPLIP driver HP Color LaserJet cp1518ni hpijs, 3.9.2

Printer = cp1518ni
from print properties:
Paper Size: 5 x 8 inch Index Card

[Bug 347034] Re: External Drive not recognised at boot

2009-05-03 Thread Flavelle
JM. Candelay - glad the majority of your problems are solved.
Unfortunately, your first sentence, installing Ntfs configuration tool,
and starting system first then switching on external drive second solved
this one for me ... is exactly the problem that is reported.

Like you, if I start the system first, then either plug in, or turn on,
the external USB drive, then the drive automounts and works correctly.
The issue is that in previous versions (8.04 - 8.10), the drive was
recognised when the system was booted without having to either plug it
in or turn it on. I want that behaviour back.

I am getting the same error as reported here: modprobe: FATAL: Could not
load /lib/modules/2.6.28-generic/modules.dep No such file or directory
and don't know if that has something to do with the problem.

Thanks,

[Bug 347034] Re: External Drive not recognised at boot

2009-03-28 Thread Flavelle
I'm not sure if I am supposed to do something with Brian's entry. I'm a
relative newbie, so if there is something that I need to do, then I will
need specific instructions.

I don't know if this helps, but from a cold boot:

1. The BIOS boots and appears okay.
2. The GRUB menu comes up and proceeds to the next stage.
3. I get an ATA1 soft reset error. Not sure what that is about.
4. I get a Fatal Error. There is a module that doesn't load. The message goes
too fast for me to read the details of the message.
5. The ubuntu splash screen starts up.

If someone can tell me how to pause between 4 and 5 above, then I would
be able to read the details of the error message that is displayed in 4.
That might provide enough information to correct the problem.

Please note that on this machine, the external drive was recognised at
boot-up, so there is some change between 8.10 and 9.04 that is causing
the problem.

Thanks,

(I had previously turned it off, then turned it on again, which causes
it to be recognised). The issue is that it used to be recognised at
boot-up, without the need to turn it off and on again.

Many thanks,

[Bug 347034] Re: External Drive not recognised at boot

2009-03-24 Thread Flavelle
What is frustrating is that I had to do a clean install. I did the
installation from Alpha-5 and the USB drive was instantly recognised.
When I upgraded (I assume to Alpha 6) through the Update Manager
(partial upgrade option), the USB drive was no longer instantly
recognised.

I'm not sure what changed, but this might help identify the problem.

Thanks,

[Bug 347034] [NEW] External Drive not recognised at boot

2009-03-22 Thread Flavelle
Public bug reported:

I have an external drive (NTFS) that is connected through a USB port to
my desktop.

In Ubuntu 8.10, this drive is recognised immediately after starting my
desktop.

In Ubuntu 9.04 (Alpha-6), this drive is not recognised immediately. If I
turn off the drive, then turn it on, it is recognised.

The desired behaviour is to have the drive recognised and mounted
immediately on boot with no intervention on my part.

[Bug 298342] Re: New Icons and Proper Names for Applications for Open Office

2008-12-02 Thread Flavelle
Two comments:

1/ Don't know who made the 'design choice', but the names selected by Ubuntu
are not more friendly, in my opinion.
2/ The issue of the icons has not been addressed. These should be subject to
theming, which is not the case with the icons that are used in the OpenOffice
2.4 that is installed by Ubuntu.

For these reasons, I object to the bug being classified as 'Invalid'
without further discussion. I would like to suggest that the 'design
choice' should be revisited.

Thanks,

Re: [Bug 162984] Re: [needs-packaging] Nimbus GTK theme

2008-11-22 Thread Flavelle
Christian:

I agree with the notion of the Screenshot, and as soon as I figure it
out, I will add one.

I also agree with the notion of supplying an Ubuntu package, but not
necessarily a Debian package. The reason for excluding Debian is the
logo in the top title bar - we would have to have a separate release for
Debian. It's something that we can look at for the future, but I'd like
to stay with an ubuntu release for the moment. Hopefully, you will
concur.

I am attaching a screenshot with a plain background. Have a look at the
trashcan in the lower-right corner. This is the trashcan from nimbus. If
you compare that to the trashcan in your screenshot, you will see that
they are quite different.

I agree that we need to identify those cases where the icons differ
between ubuntu and nimbus and determine how to best correct the
deficiencies that we find.

I am also grateful for your offer of being a tester, and I will set you
up as a tester once I've figured out how to do that.

Many thanks,
Flavelle

I will assist you as far as I can, you can add me as tester. However,
for time reason, I can currently do not more than test.

By the way, I mixed Nimbus with the Mac4Lin cursors (beautiful
animated), a Mac4Lin wallpaper and the Mist icons - looks IMHO also very
 nice, see attached screenshot.

My first suggestion would be to add a screenshot to your project page on
Launchpad: https://launchpad.net/nimbus-ubuntu and to extend the scope
to customizing AND providing Debian/Ubuntu packages for Nimbus.

Also, we could contact upstream maintainers if they maybe will provide
additional icons for Ubuntu, as Sun and Canonical seem to have a good
 relationsship.

Some more indepth testing also needs to be done - there are possibly
icons missing or at the wrong place in the Ubuntu builds that we have
not yet discovered. I will try to to this as soon as I have installed
 the latest Nimbus.

Do you have any idea where that goes?

These are the instructions that I have to build the debs. Please note

[Bug 162984] Re: [needs-packaging] Nimbus GTK theme

2008-11-18 Thread Flavelle
I've started the 'learning curve' for how to properly package the nimbus
package and how to maintain it going forward. The learning curve is
steep, since I'm coming from ground zero.

I have placed the source and my current debs on
http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=046374f71330ec4dab1eab3e9fa335ca1691171a9aedb7a6

I would appreciate it if someone could start looking at these and give
me some advice on how to properly package these. I will update the
contents at this site as I go through the learning curve, as well as add
thoughts and progress on this bug report.

[Bug 162984] Re: [needs-packaging] Nimbus GTK theme

2008-11-18 Thread Flavelle
I have a couple of questions:

1. I have setup a project in Launchpad, nimbus-ubuntu. I haven't figured
out how to do a code import yet. If someone knows how to import the code
from my machine into launchpad, then could they tell me how. The code is
currently stored on a directory in my machine.

2. How do we find out what the icon naming convention should be for
ubuntu?

3. How do we find out what the icon naming convention is in nimbus?

Once we know these things, then we can figure out how to get from point
A (nimbus on OpenSolaris) to point B (nimbus on Ubuntu). Along the way,
we may learn a few things.

I would like to suggest that we start with the nimbus 0.1.1 from the Sun
site. Also, I will be happy to set people up as contributors, if they
wish.

The latest Nimbus upstream is version 0.1.1, which is quite a bit up

I'm not sure how to do this - I've only been using Linux/Ubuntu for six
months, but I do have the latest Nimbus themes and gtk-engine (version
0.1.1 from Sun) customised for ubuntu in both i386 and x86_64 debs.

If there is someone who wants to help me learn how to package these for
inclusion in ubuntu, then I will take it on. It would also be helpful if
there was someone who was a GTK theme expert - I'd like to learn more
about GTK themes in general, particularly in the use of the make and
install files. It has been a very long time since I have programmed in
C.

I am attaching a screenshot of my desktop with Nimbus applied. I am
running 8.10 AMD64 on this machine and installed Nimbus from my .deb
file.

[Bug 267376] Re: [Request] OpenOffice.org 3.0 in Intrepid ibex release

2008-10-14 Thread Flavelle
Clearly there is an overwhelming desire on the part of the users to have
OpenOffice 3.0 in Intrepid. In normal circumstances, I understand that
there should be no delay in releasing Intrepid. The fact that an
application is not released in stable enough form to be included is not
normally a reason to delay the release.

OpenOffice is a core application - it is one of the primary applications
that is a 'seller' for Linux. The fact that it is included and installed
by default is an important consideration. If Intrepid cannot be delayed,
then I would suggest that ubuntu should release Intrepid 8.10.1, with
the key requirement that OpenOffice 3.0 is included. I understand that
this is normally done only for an LTS release, but I would suggest that
these are exceptional circumstances.

It is important, especially for new users, that their first experience
with ubuntu is a positive one. The fact that OpenOffice 3.0 is out
there, but not included in an initial installation of ubuntu will
detract from the experience. Not sure who needs to be involved in the
decision, but I think most users would agree that waiting six months to
have OpenOffice 3.0 included in a standard ubuntu installation is not
acceptable.

[Bug 231785] Re: Feature request - MS Windows compatible US keyboard layout

2008-05-19 Thread Flavelle
This is starting to get frustrating!

I will submit the idea to the Brainstorm team, but hopefully this won't
keep getting passed around.

[Bug 106155] Re: [Whislist] Sbackup should report when a backup fails

2008-05-18 Thread Flavelle
Actually, it would be perfect if sbackup would report on whether the
backup failed or succeeded! E-mail should certainly be an option, but I
would prefer some way to monitor the progress as the backup is
proceeding and a window that advises on whether or not it was successful
by checking the actual content of the backup file.

Backups are too critical and must be absolutely reliable! If this is the
tool to use (and it probably should be for most users) then the tool
must be able to do the backup, report on the result of the backup, and
do the restore with absolute reliability.

[Bug 231785] Re: Feature request - MS Windows compatible US keyboard layout

2008-05-18 Thread Flavelle
The following link describes EXACTLY how the Microsoft International
Keyboard works:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/97738

This is the 'ask'.

Many thanks

p.s. Gord was kind enough to forward my original request from the
Questions portion.
