Public bug reported:

In the installer for 20.04.1, a crash occurs every time it attempts to install

Re: [Bug 1854995] Re: chromium-browser crashes on 4K system

2020-02-21 Thread John Shakespeare
Hi Olivier,

I have determined that it is a bug in the display driver.
How do I get the display driver to output something?
It gives no output even if
enabled=1
in /etc/default/apport.

Best Regards,
John.

Re: [Bug 1854995] Re: chromium-browser crashes on 4K system

2019-12-22 Thread John Shakespeare
Hi Olivier,

The file _usr_bin_software-properties-gtk.0.crash should be examined
first, as I believe it to be the root cause of the crash. It's only 83
KB. There was also an excessively large 115 MB chromium crash log file
called _usr_lib_chromium-browser_chromium-browser.1000.crash. Are you
able to take such files?

Best Regards,
John.

[Bug 1854995] [NEW] chromium-browser crashes on 4K system

2019-12-03 Thread John Shakespeare
Public bug reported:

There is a bug which affects chromium-browser intermittently (it also affects
the firefox browser, but not in necessarily the same way). It does not affect
NFS (I use it), and is explicit to those two browsers. Opera browser or vivaldi
browser have not been checked for the bug.

[Bug 1614683] [NEW] package bcmwl-kernel-source (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 3

2016-08-18 Thread John Shakespeare
Public bug reported:

On upgrading a Dell M4400 from Trusty 14.04.3 to Xenial 16.04.1, the
Broadcom wireless (which had been working in Trusty) failed to load.
It's a Broadcom 14e4:432b according to lspci.

flawlessly. I would rather not revise all of my settings to this

[Bug 504028] [NEW] package kde-l10n-fi 4:4.3.2-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite '/usr/share/locale/fi/LC_MESSAGES/kimagemapeditor.mo', which is also in package kde-i18n-fi 4:3.5

2010-01-06 Thread John Shakespeare

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kde-l10n-fi

Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic for amd64 (system is Intel Core2Quad, 8GB RAM, ATI4850 with
fglrx, 4x1TB SATA)
Update manager included the kds-l10n-fi package among regular updates. It
failed to install, with the message:

E: /var/cache/apt/archives/kde-l10n-

'/usr/share/locale/fi/LC_MESSAGES/kimagemapeditor.mo', which is also in
package kde-i18n-fi 4

To resolve this, I removed kde-i18n-fi (not sure what installed it, but
nothing which is installed depended on it) using Synaptic, and was then
able to install the update for kde-l10n-fi also using Synaptic.

[Bug 302952] [NEW] perl-libxml-libxml fails on upgrade hardy to intrepid

2008-11-27 Thread John Shakespeare
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

Used alternative install disk for upgrade (script in root of cdrom). After
failing to update perl-libxml-libxml, the upgrade continued. However, the
upgrade process terminated abnormally on failing to update the update manager,
with an error message that system might be unusable. The system was usable on
restart, but needed some packages installed manually.
0. cdrom removed from repository list, and network repositories enabled (main,
restricted, universe, multiverse)
1. perl-libxml-libxml was marked broken and could not be fixed - it had to be
removed completely with synaptic
2. perl-libxml-libxml was then installable from synaptic
3. update manager was then installable from synaptic
4. samba was updated in the upgrade, but remote file systems were not mountable
using mount -a
5. smbfs had to be installed using apt-get, then mount -a worked correctly
6. the rest of installed packages were then updated from network repositories

Re: [Bug 50810] Re: partimage cannot read image files it created (workaround exists)

2007-06-30 Thread John Shakespeare
Hello Jérôme

I have not used partimage since reporting the bug, as I switched to a
different backup method.
However, I shall test if the partimage problem still occurs, in the next
few days.

Best Regards,
John.

[Bug 51573] Re: Please update HPLIP to 1.6.7

Check out the HPLIP page at SourceForge. The nice folks at HP have made
a binary installer package (since HPLIP 1.6.9), which works in Dapper.
The current version is HPLIP 1.6.10, and the binary installer can be

[Bug 50840] Re: scilab 4

Scilab 3.0-12 included in Dapper repositories has severe font problems.
It appears to use a Tamili font, which makes it useless for those who
don't understand English words in Tamili characters (probably most of
us). An upgrade to v4 might be better.

[Bug 48387] Re: CUPS 1.2.0 disabled by ServerName in client.conf

2006-06-24 Thread John Shakespeare
OK. The lack of fax support in HPLIP 0.9.7 contributed to the problem
(or at least to my confusion). I think fax support was added in 0.9.8,
and it's now up to version 1 - although they numbered it 1.6.6.

It would be quite good to have a recent HPLIP available as a binary
package for Ubuntu. The installation from the source package at
Sourceforge is less straightforward than it should be, as there are a
few script glitches.

[Bug 48387] Re: CUPS 1.2.0 disabled by ServerName in client.conf

2006-06-23 Thread John Shakespeare
OK. It can be closed.

By restoring backups, I was able to replicate the scenario which led me
to believe that autodetection was working. A second PC using Breezy with
HPLIP 0.9.11 had been configured with the HP URIs for the Officejet, and
published both the fax and the printer via cups. The laptop (also Breezy
with HPLIP 0.9.11) autodetected them on this PC.

Both PCs were later upgraded to Dapper. The HPLIP included with Dapper
is 0.9.7, which does not support the fax function. Now that I have
upgraded to HPLIP 1.6.6, both print and fax are available. However at
least one PC must connect to the Officejet using the URIs in order for
the other PC to autodetect via cups. With a fixed IP on the Officejet, I
can connect all PCs using the URIs.

Thanks Best Regards,
John.

[Bug 50810] partimage cannot read image files it created (workaround exists)

2006-06-23 Thread John Shakespeare
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: partimage

This is probably an upstream problem in partimage, rather than a Dapper
problem.

Partimage 0.6.4 shipped with Dapper fails to read image files which it
creates if the gzip compression option is selected. It save the
partition into files with names such as hda5saved.000, whether the gzip
option is selected or not.

When attempting to restore a partition from a file saved with the gzip
option, partimage gives an error message Invalid compression level for
hda5saved.000. It gives this error during command line or interactive
restore operations, or in response to an imginfo operation.

Luckily, there is a workaround:

If the saved file is less than 2GB in size, then simply renaming it as
hda5saved.gz will fix the problem. Then both restore and imginfo
operations will work correctly.

If the saved file exceeds 2GB in size, then an additional step is necessary.
The saved file must be uncompressed and piped to stdin of partimage (as root):
  gunzip -c hda5saved.gz | partimage imginfo stdin
  gunzip -c hda5saved.gz | partimage restore /dev/hda5 stdin

So it seems that there are two aspects to the problem. One is
inconsistent file naming assumptions between the save operation and the
restore or imginfo operations. The second is using a file write which
can handle large files, but using a file read which is limited to 2GB
per file.

- John.

[Bug 48387] Re: CUPS 1.2.0 disabled by ServerName in client.conf

2006-06-16 Thread John Shakespeare
Apparently, the printer itself does not respond on port 631, so I guess
it does not natively support ipp.

When I was running Breezy, it definitely autodetected the printer (print
and fax). My best hypothesis to explain this is that (i) I had windows
running on another PC on the net, with HP software installed which
autodetected all functions of the Officejet, and (ii) this windows PC
may have published the printer on port 631. This PC is also running
Dapper now, so I can't easily replicate the scenario.

My network has been reconfigured with fixed IP addresses for all devices
normally connected, and now uses DHCP only for ad hoc connections.

Thanks for the assistance.
