[Bug 1382106] Re: p7zip-full fails to deal correctly with filename encodings

2020-08-19 Thread Jun Kobayashi
I've tried Unxed's p7zip patch on Ubuntu 18.04 and 20.04, and worked
good for Japanese filenames.

I've upload patched deb packages to my ppa:

[Bug 1796722] Re: Unusual Region & Language settings on Live Session after clicking "Try Ubuntu"

2018-10-11 Thread Jun Kobayashi
#7 is accidentally posted.

I don't know much about other than Janpanese, but I can confirm input-souces
settings are different between "choosing language on isolinux menu" and
"choosing langage on Ubiquity Greeter" for above languages.

Hope this clarifies the issue.

[Bug 1796722] Re: Unusual Region & Language settings on Live Session after clicking "Try Ubuntu"

2018-10-11 Thread Jun Kobayashi
Thank you for your reply.

> that?

It seems to me this bug is a little different from the bug #1786344.
Comment #10 of the bug #1786344 you wrote could be related this bug,
but other comments may be related to other problem on inputting chinese.

> Besides that, it's unclear to me how your other observations are
> problems. If you think they are, please let us know what you think
> should be the expected behavior in the various examples.

This bug occurs only after maybe-ubiquity mode(ubiquity --greeter).
According to the bug #1766047, it's impossible to boot in maybe-ubiquity mode
when booting in UEFI. So this bug occurs when booting in legacy BIOS.

When choosing 日本語(Japanese) on isolinux menu and select
インストールせずにUbuntuを試してみる(Try Ubuntu without installing),
I can use Mozc without problems on live session.
dconf shows ('ibus', 'mozc-jp') for input-sources as follows.
This is totally expected behavior.
--
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ cat /proc/cmdline
file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu.seed boot=casper initrd=/casper/initrd quiet splash
--- debian-installer/language=ja keyboard-configuration/layoutcode?=jp
keyboard-configuration/modelcode?=jp106
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ dconf dump /org/gnome/desktop/input-sources/
[/]
sources=[('xkb', 'jp'), ('ibus', 'mozc-jp')]
xkb-options=['lv3:ralt_switch']
--

But when waiting for ubiquity greeter dialog, select 日本語(Japanese), click
Ubuntuを試す(Try Ubuntu),
I can't use Mozc on live session.
no ('ibus', 'mozc-jp') for input-sources and rarely used Japanese input sources
are listed as follows.
--
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ cat /proc/cmdline
file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu.seed boot=casper initrd=/casper/initrd quiet splash
--- maybe-ubiquity
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ dconf dump /org/gnome/desktop/input-sources/
[/]
sources=[('xkb', 'jp'), ('xkb', 'nec_vndr/jp'), ('xkb', 'jp+OADG109A'), ('xkb',
'jp+dvorak')]
xkb-options=@as []
--

I tried selecting other languages, the result is as follows.

Select Simplified Chinese on isolinux menu:
--
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ cat /proc/cmdline
file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu.seed boot=casper initrd=/casper/initrd quiet splash
--- locale=zh_CN keyboard-configuration/layoutcode?=cn
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ dconf dump /org/gnome/desktop/input-sources/
[/]
sources=[('xkb', 'cn'), ('ibus', 'libpinyin')]
xkb-options=['lv3:ralt_switch']
--
I don't know this is ideal settings for Chinese or not, but it includes
('ibus', 'libpinyin') anyway.

Select Simplified Chinese on Ubiquity Greeter:
--
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ cat /proc/cmdline
file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu.seed boot=casper initrd=/casper/initrd quiet splash
--- maybe-ubiquity
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ dconf dump /org/gnome/desktop/input-sources/
[/]
sources=[('xkb', 'cn')]
xkb-options=@as []
--
Only [('xkb', 'cn')] is. This is the same as comment #10 of bug #1786344.

Select English on isolinux menu:
--
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ cat /proc/cmdline
file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu.seed boot=casper initrd=/casper/initrd quiet splash
---
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ dconf dump /org/gnome/desktop/input-sources/
[/]
sources=[('xkb', 'us')]
xkb-options=@as []
--

Select English on Ubiquity Greeter:
--
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ cat /proc/cmdline
file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu.seed boot=casper initrd=/casper/initrd quiet splash
--- maybe-ubiquity
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ dconf dump /org/gnome/desktop/input-sources/
[/]
sources=[('xkb', 'us'), ('xkb', 'au'), ('xkb', 'cm'), ('xkb', 'gb')]
xkb-options=@as []
--
4 input sources are listed.

Select Svenska on isolinux menu:
--
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ cat /proc/cmdline
file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu.seed boot=casper initrd=/casper/initrd quiet splash
--- debian-installer/language=sv keyboard-configuration/layoutcode?=se
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ dconf dump /org/gnome/desktop/input-sources/
[/]
sources=[('xkb', 'se')]
xkb-options=['lv3:ralt_switch']
--

Select Svenska on Ubiquity Greeter:
--
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ cat /proc/cmdline
file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu.seed boot=casper initrd=/casper/initrd quiet splash
--- maybe-ubiquity
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ dconf dump /org/gnome/desktop/input-sources/
[/]
sources=[('xkb', 'se'), ('xkb', 'se+dvorak'), ('xkb', 'se+mac'), ('xkb',
'se+nodeadkeys')]
xkb-options=@as []

[Bug 1796722] [NEW] Unusual Region & Language settings on Live Session after clicking "Try Ubuntu"

2018-10-08 Thread Jun Kobayashi
Public bug reported:

I've faced this problem when I tried Cosmic daily iso with VirtualBox.

iso image: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/20181007/cosmic-desktop-
amd64.iso

Steps to Reproduce 1:
1. boot virtual pc with cosmic-desktop-amd64.iso
2. wait for Ubiquity dialoge
3. click "Try Ubuntu" button
4. wait for Live Session
5. input source selection menu is shown on right of topbar, including "en1",
"en2", "cm" and "en3"
6. open Settings app and select "Region & Language"
7. 4 input sources listed: English(US), English(Australian), English(Cameroon),
English(UK)

Steps to Reproduce 2:
1. boot virtual pc with cosmic-desktop-amd64.iso
2. wait for Ubiquity dialoge and select "Deutsch"
3. click "Ubuntu ausprobieren" button
4. wait for Live Session
5. input source selection menu is shown on right of topbar, including "de1",
"de2", "be" and "de3"
6. open Einstellungen app and select "Region und Sprache"
7. 4 input sources listed: Deutsch, Deutsch (Österreich), Belgisch, Deutsch
(Schweiz)
"English (United States)" for Sprache, "United States" for Formate

Steps to Reproduce 3:
1. boot virtual pc with cosmic-desktop-amd64.iso
2. wait for Ubiquity dialoge and select "日本語"
3. click "Ubuntuを試す" button
4. wait for Live Session
5. input source selection menu is shown on right of topbar, including "ja1",
"ja2", "ja3" and "ja4"
6. open Settings app and select "Region & Language"
7. 4 input sources listed: Japanese, Japanese (PC-98), Japanese (OADG 109A),
Japanese (Dvorak)
This setting don't supports inputting Japanese.

When I selected "Try Ubuntu without installing" on isolinux menu and login
directly into Live Session, only "English (US)" is shown for input source.This
seem to be normal setting.
When I selected "Deutsch" and boot Live Session, only "Deutsch" is shown for
input source.
When I selected "日本語" and boot Live Session, "Japanese" and "日本語(Mozc)" are
shown.This setting supports inputting Japanese.

[Bug 1767203] [NEW] Wrong Japanese input setting after click "Try Ubuntu"

2018-04-26 Thread Jun Kobayashi
Public bug reported:

1. boot Bionic final(20180426) iso with legacy bios (I'm using VirtualBox)
2. no input on isolinux screen and wait for ubiquity
3. Select 日本語 and Ubuntuを試す(Try Ubuntu) button
4. GNOME desktop is up. 4 keyboard layouts added as follows.
  Japanese
  Japanese (PC-98)
  Japanese (ODAG 109A)
  Japanese (Dvorak)

Expected Results:

Following 2 layouts added:

  Japanese
  日本語 (Mozc)

And "日本語 (Mozc)" should be selected by default.
This is because "日本語 (Mozc)" supports to input both Latin characters and
Japanese characters.
So most of Japanese users always use "日本語 (Mozc)" and no need to switch
"Japanese" layout.

You can verify them automatically with the 'integrity-check' boot parameter,

[Bug 452348] Re: Karmic: Wubi could not launch with Japanese-multibytes user names

2009-10-23 Thread Jun Kobayashi
Arne, Thank you for your note. Wubi will copy the login name from the
one of Windows, but in the case of using a non-ASCII user name on
Windows, it won't copy the name and leave the input feild blank. And we
must input other login name for Ubuntu with ASCII characters or Wubi
warns. So I think there's no problem at least about login names if using
the above patch.

[Bug 217627] Re: Japanese keyboard layout is incorrct in the case of upgrading 7.10 to 8.04

2008-04-15 Thread Jun Kobayashi
This problem seem to be caused that new xorg doesn't support Option
XkbVariant latin, for Japanese 106 keyboards, but the upgrade
program doesn't rewrite xorg.conf to change latin, to 106,.

Possible two solutions:
a) xkeyboard-config supports Option XkbVariant latin,.
b) upgrade program changes latin, to 106, in the case of Japanese Keyboard

a) is better solution than b). This is because there are many xorg.conf
examples for Japanese users on many web site including Option XkbVariant
latin,.
If xkeyboard-config remain the current configuration for JP keybaords, many
Japanese users will be puzzled.

I'm attaching updated /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/jp file which supports
latin,.
I hope this file included in new xkeyboard-config package if OK.

 FWIW, a simple sudo dosfsck /dev/sdb1 on my USB stick which has
 Japanese file names on it did not break things. But I have been mostly
 using this stick from Linux and only occasionally from a friend's

dosfsck seems to break filenames which includes 0x5c, this code equal to
the code of \(back slash).
I made some files includes 0x5c in my USB stick on windows, and then
connected it to Ubuntu box, run sudo dosfsck -a /dev/sdb1, and those
files are renamed.

[Bug 217121] Re: Ubuntu instration breaks Japanese file names on FAT32 patition

2008-04-14 Thread Jun Kobayashi
This seem to be because running dosfsck on FAT32 patition when ubuntu boots up.
But dosfsck has problem of multibyte characters - see #49217.

Ubuntu installer writes /etc/fstab as follows:
# /dev/sda1
UUID=3F19-1E0C  /windowsvfatutf8,umask=007,gid=46 0   1

To avoid running dosfsck on FAT32, this should be as follws:
# /dev/sda1
UUID=3F19-1E0C  /windowsvfatutf8,umask=007,gid=46 0   0

I'm not sure this solution is harmful or not for other languages, but
parhaps it is no need to run fsck on windows patition.

Thank you for your advice.

I added this bug in English - https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/217121.

Incidentally, we describe Ubuntu bugs on Japanese on Ubuntu Kaizen Project -
see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-jp-improvement.
This is because most of Japanese users are not good at English(Japanese
language is widely differ from English!), so we need the place to discuss and
trace bugs in Japanese.
Of cource, we re-add bugs in English if we recogonize need to fix them in
Ubuntu.
I believe this is good way for Japanese Ubuntu users and Ubuntu.

2008-03-17 Thread Jun Kobayashi
Thank you for your help, Arne.

The default sans-serif and monospace font for Japanese should be replaced with
VL Gothic, IMO.
This is because Kochi is not under development anymore, meanwhile VL Gothic is
under lasting improvement and has better level of visibility than Kochi.

And, it is preferred to use the Latin characters come with Japanese
fonts. The Latin characters included in Japanese fonts are designed to
match Japanese characters.

[Bug 39626] Re: Candidates lookup table should be vertical by default in case of Japanese

2007-05-16 Thread Jun Kobayashi
Hi folks, thanks for your help.

 I see. We also seem to have an configure option in /etc/scim/config:
 /Panel/Gtk/LookupTableVertical = false

 So all Japanese input method would prefer a vertical candidate table?

I think almost all Japanese input method must prefer the vertical table.

 It seems we need to find some way to change scim's default configuration
 according to the locale or the preferred IM module.

I agree.

I subscribed Takuro Ashie, the developer of scim-anthy. He may have ideas
for this problem.

Ashie-san, could you check this bug and tell us your opinion?

[Bug 63915] Re: Japan keyboard layout is actually U.S. English on installer

2007-03-28 Thread Jun Kobayashi
This problem still exists in Feisty Beta.

I found the cause of this problem is that the layout string 'jp' is replaced to
'us,jp' in adjust_keyboard function in
/usr/lib/ubiquity/ubiquity/components/console_setup.py.
I rewrote this file not to replace the string 'jp', restarted installer, and
worked fine.

I'm attaching a patch for this script.

Cause of this problem is that keycode 124 is not included in /etc

Fix Instruction:
1. Run the following command.

  ~$ sudo nano /usr/bin/ckbcomp

2. Find and edit the following line.

  133 = -1,  # Japanese

to

  133 = 124, # Japanese

3. Restart console-setup

[Bug 63915] Re: [Edgy Beta] Japan keyboard layout is actually U.S. English

2006-10-05 Thread Jun Kobayashi
Thank you for your reply.

I don't mean to input Japanese characters(like 'あ') printed on Japanese
keyboard, but to input some latin characters with Japanese keyboard.

Japanese keyboard has different layout from us one:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keyboard_layout#Japanese

For example, '@' locates on the right side of 'P' on Japanese keyboard,
but '[' locates at the same place on US keyboard.

I selected Germany in ubiquity step 3, type 'z' and 'y' appeared. This seems
to be correct. Germany keyboard has 'y' on the left of 'x'.
But I switched to Japan, type '@' and '[' occured. This causes that they
can't type some latin caracters with Japanese keyboard on live session. For
instance, they can't type '_'(under score) for their hostname.
