You're now using X directly (not Xv) which avoids the problem, but it's

As an alternative to using alsamixer to check volume levels, one can use
the GNOME Volume Control application. However, by default, this
application does not show all ALSA channels. Configure all channels in
the view, by using Edit-Preferences.

The keyboard is not completely un-functional at the login screen. After
pressing enough keys, I can find some that work in displaying incorrect
characters to the login prompt window. Most do nothing, but some do
consistently output the wrong characters.
Seeing same problem with 7.04 AMD64 DVD install.
System is using MSI K8TN2-FIR with onboard SATA controller. Trying to
install to a single drive of two Seagate 80 GB. Second drive
unpartitioned for simplicity.
