Ok, I've figured out what the problem is. There appear to be two kinds of Flags. There is the 'Flagged' column which appears by default in Ubuntu. Clicking in here next to a message makes an orange exclamation emblem appear next to that message. However these messages do not appear in a Follow Up

xorg.conf is a stub in Hardy, so it's supposed to be largely empty. Config is now in per user in your home folder /.gnome2/monitors.xml the rest is done on the fly by xrandr. If xrandr isn't detecting your hardward properly you could try sudo displayconfig-gtk. This will create a new (filled in)
