[Bug 524226] Re: ssh-import-id: retrieve a key from a public keyserver and add to the authorized_keys file

2010-02-21 Thread Pär Andersson
I think a name like ssh-import-launchpad-id would be more appropriate
for something this Launchpad specific.

[Bug 453064] [NEW] Incorrect Intel firmware file name

2009-10-16 Thread Pär Andersson
Public bug reported:

/lib/firmware/2.6.31-14-generic/lbm-iwlwifi-5000-1.ucode is API v2 and
should be named lbm-iwlwifi-5000-2.ucode. As you see the -1 LBM
package matches the -2 file in linux-firmware:

$ sha1sum /lib/firmware/{,2.6.31-14-generic/}*iwlwifi-5000-*

/lib/firmware/2.6.31-14-generic/lbm-iwlwifi-5000-1.ucode

Also confirmed this by downloading the firmware iwlwifi-5000-2.ucode
from Intel:

b1dc5068cd536a97af7e3c0090a5a632d09ab2f3 iwlwifi-5000-2.ucode

[Bug 404575] Re: iwlagn creates cpu hog

2009-10-16 Thread Pär Andersson
This bug is reported against backports-modules, but I don't see
anything in the comments that suggest that the reporters actually use
this.

So to clarify, do you have the package linux-backports-modules-karmic
installed when you see this problem?

[Bug 405158] Re: Intel WiFi Link 5100 (iwlagn) power management regression in 2.6.31

2009-10-16 Thread Pär Andersson
For those who asked, the modules are backported from compat-wireless
http://linuxwireless.org.

This is code that will go into newer versions of the Linux kernel,
which will then go into newer versions of Ubuntu.

The upstream developers disabled power management on iwlagn some time
after 2.6.30 because it was buggy. It was only recently re-enabled,
after the problems was fixed. This did not make it into 2.6.31 and is
therefore not in karmic's kernel. My guess is that the changes are too
intrusive to backport into the default kernel iwlagn.

(Note, I am not a kernel developer, but the above is how I think it
is)

[Bug 373054] Re: [Jaunty] Offlineimap crashes with OpenSSL error

2009-10-03 Thread Pär Andersson
This looks like an SSL problem.

This is a wild guess, but is it possible for you to test this on the
Ubuntu 9.10 beta? The included version 6.2.0 of offlineimap is about
one year newer than the 6.0.3 in jaunty.

I am using offlineimap on 9.10 without any problems, but I did not see
this bug on 9.04 either.

Do you still see this problem with 6.2.0ubuntu2 in karmic? 6.2.0 is

also looks like it might be relevant.

No, this bug did not cause any hard resets of the sata link or any

ata4: EH complete
ata4: EH pending after 5 tries, giving up

This means that you have another problem and should open another bug.

[Bug 405227] Re: gdm fails to start if /var/log/gdm does not exist

2009-09-19 Thread Pär Andersson
This bug is about GDM breaking when a user remove system directories
that they should never remove. Importance Critical would be
ridiculous, I actually think even Medium is too much.

It is an incorrect assumption that it is OK to tidy up by running
rm -rf /var/log/*. Doing that is never correct, AFAIK /var/cache is
the only directory under /var where the FHS say you may remove
anything at any time.

There is probably many other programs that can't recreate their own
log directory, especially programs running as non-root. Only root can
write to /var/log, so giving write permissions for other system
uid/gid is often the reason that an application have a separate
directory under /var/log.

(SSD) Users that like to put /var/log on tmpfs will need to sync files
to/from it at boot/shutdown, just as if they put any other system
directory on tmpfs. If there are guides/howtos suggesting to mount an
empty tmpfs on /var/log at boot then those guides needs to be fixed.

Here are the relevant parts of FHS[1] and Debian Policy[2]:

The debconf files that handles this is missing from the source package
in karmic. The code is still there in gdm.postinst and gdm.prerm, but
gdm.config and gdm.template is gone.

Rebuilding 2.27.90, with those two files taken unmodified from 2.20.10
seems to work.

[Bug 409440] Re: upstream compiled binaries built with executable stacks

2009-09-15 Thread Pär Andersson
With version 2:8.660-0ubuntu1 on amd64, the list of files with an
executable stack is shorter:

xorg-driver-fglrx:
/usr/lib/libGL.so.1.2
/usr/lib/dri/fglrx_dri.so
/usr/lib32/libGL.so.1.2
/usr/lib32/dri/fglrx_dri.so

I used execstack -c to remove the executable stack from those and
rebooted. I have only tested a few minutes, but so far everything
seems OK.

Tested:
xv - mplayer -vo xv
OpenGL - glxgears, fgl_glxgears, ppracer, mplayer -vo gl2

This is using an integrated HD3200 card:

01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon HD 3200

[Bug 140666] Re: changelogs.ubuntu.com lags behind archive

2009-04-27 Thread Pär Andersson
No, this is still a problem.

For example right now acpid 1.0.6-9ubuntu4.9.04.2 is available in
jaunty-security, but the changelog is not on changelogs.ubuntu.com. This
means that I can't review it from within aptitude before upgrading.

(I can of course open a web browser and find the changelog on launchpad,
but that is not nearly as convenient)

[Bug 345397] Re: [patch] Fix ability to modify keyboard repeat rate

2009-04-21 Thread Pär Andersson
 Some more regression discussion:
We tried backporting this patch to intrepid, but we found that this produced
a regression: some keys such as the left/down arrow keys no longer repeated.
The good news is that no one has produced this regression yet using the
patched evdev packages in jaunty, but it is something to look out for.

Let me be the first to report this then :-(

With evdev 1:2.1.1-1ubuntu4 on Jaunty left, down, end no longer repeats.
1:2.1.1-1ubuntu3 works fine.

Repeat for those keys can be enabled using xset r 113; xset r 115; xset
r 116, as suggested in bug 281546.

[Bug 348118] [NEW] Missing Build-Depends: python2.6

2009-03-24 Thread Pär Andersson
Public bug reported:

The source package python-3.0 3.0.1-0ubuntu8 uses python2.6 to build the
documentation. (See debian/patches/htmldoc-python26.dpatch)

However python2.6 is missing from the Build-Depends. I think it should
be added to make the dependency obvious, without this you also can't
backport the package without modifying the source.

[Bug 253904] Re: does not build a lot of metapackages any more

2008-10-16 Thread Pär Andersson
I just got pointed at this bug when asking for intrepid linux-image-
debug packages on IRC.

I see how some might think it makes sense to throw kernel debug packages
with normal debug packages. However I disagree.

Debug information for kernel+modules is special because it is needed for
low level debugging tools like systemtap and oprofile, which are both
available in the normal archive. Especially oprofile is very useful to
benchmark and/or troubleshoot servers, I don't think you should have to
enable a ddebs repo just to do this. Also, how do you even figure out
that they are on ddebs? And how do you handle upgrades from hardy for
people who use this kind of tools?

A smaller problem, is that the package are not really available on ddebs
either. The packages are on http://ddebs.ubuntu.com/pool/main/l/linux/,
but they are not in the Packages files so you can't install them using
APT.

One bigger problem that will prevent me from installing them is that bug
185625 (sign the repository at ddebs.ubuntu.com) is not fixed. This
means that in Intrepid it is currently impossible to get trusted kernel
debug packages. :-(

Sorry for not replying to this earlier!

I have had a hardware failure in my home workstation where I do all my Ubuntu
testing/development. It took some time, but now I have gotten it into a
somewhat usable state. :-)

On Sunday 05 October 2008 12.56.59 StefanPotyra wrote:

geordi builds fine in a pbuilder with the new libghc6-utf8-string-dev and
haskell-devscripts.

After installation geordi segfault on startup. However the version from
intrepids repositories behaves in the exact same way, so I don't think this
have anything to do with the utf8-string package.

I just rebuilt haskell-devscripts, haskell-utf8-string and geordi, and
looks all good. Also from looking at the diff of haskell-utf8-string,
the code changes don't look too invasive to me.

I reviewed the changes in both packages earlier, and don't really have
anything to add. Both looks quite safe.

As I mentioned before I have also built all the mentioned packages, and been
using the resulting xmonad + contrib since then. Is there anything more I can
do to help this along?

I think you missed that haskell-utf8-string only is the name of the source

packages:

libghc6-utf8-string-doc
libghc6-utf8-string-dev

The version in Debian is 0.3.1.1-2 and in addition to the above it also
builds:

libghc6-utf8-string-prof

The -prof package is needed by xmonad-contrib as it builds a libghc6-xmonad-
contrib-prof package.

Thanks a lot for taking time to look at this!

+ UPDATE: 2008-10-03
+ Changed Summary to request xmonad 0.8-1, xmonad-contrib 0.8-2 as contrib -2
was uploaded to Debian yesterday with a small fix for Debian bug #500833. See
comments on this bug for details.

  Hi,

I hereby request a FFE to sync the following two source packages from
  Debian unstable to Intrepid:

  xmonad 0.8-1
  xmonad-contrib 0.8-1

I know this is very late in the release cycle, but I still think this
would make sense. I also hope that it is OK to use a single bug for
two source packages like this, the packages only makes sense together.

  Reasons for a FFE:

  * 0.8 is the latest stable version, released 2008-09-05.

  * xmonad have good release management and is very stable.

  * 0.8 brings have several nice fixes and features, and it would be
very nice to not have this in intrepid.

  * xmonad{,-contrib} is small and self contained with no rdepends on
any other packages.

  * xmonad{,-contrib} 0.8-1 is in Debian unstable. The source packages
builds in an intrepid pbuilder and the resulting packages works.

  * Only two outstanding bugs in Debian.

* 484091 - minor request for changed handling of .xsession-files
  http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=484091

* 500833 - Request is to compile -contrib with utf8 support
(--flags=with_utf8). This is a bigger issue, but at least not a
regression as utf8 is disabled in the current 0.7 packages as
  well.
  http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=500833

The lack of rdepends, and state of the packages in Debian makes me
think this FFE would be quite safe even this late in the Intrepid
release cycle. It will only affect xmonad users most likely make them
  happy!

headlines part from the release announcement is good:

   The headlines:

   * A general purpose replacement for gaps has been adopted.
   * Floating windows pop up on the current screen by default
   * Locale support
   * Rock solid code: No new crash-inducing bugs reported in this
 release cycle
   * Many new extensions, including the ability to write your own
 configuration parsers.

Yeah, I assumed that I would have to get another +1 for you or
somebody else again after testing -2. :-)

Should I have changed the bug status myself? Just so I know the
correct work flow for next time.

On Friday 03 October 2008 09.20.40 Pär Andersson wrote:

It turns out that I was very, very WRONG! Building -2 is much more
complicated than -1.

* xmonad-contrib 0.8-2 have a build-depends on libghc6-utf8-string-dev
(= 0.3.1.1-2), but 0.3.1-1 is in intrepid.

* xmonad-contrib also requires a profiling enabled package,
libghc6-utf8-string-prof, which is not build for 0.3.1-1.

I have thought about three different ways to handle this. Sorted with
my least preferred solution first:

1. Modify xmonad-contrib and haskell-utf8-string in Ubuntu.

* haskell-utf8.string 0.3.1ubuntu1 will build a -prof package.

* xmonad-contrib 0.8-2ubuntu1 will have modified build-depends to
require 0.3.1-1ubuntu1 (with I think is recent enough for xmonad)

This solution sucks so much that I almost didn't include it. We get
two packages that both differs from Debian. I have not built any
packages to try this.

2. Go back to the original plan.

Use both xmonad and xmonad-contrib version 0.8-1.

We know that this builds and works. However the utf8 support would be
very nice to have, so this is not perfect.

3. Two more syncs.

Sync the source package haskell-utf8-string 0.3.1.1-2 from Debian
sid.

haskell-utf8-string have a build-depend on haskell-devscripts (=
0.6.13), Intrepid have 0.6.12. This means that if we don't wan't to
change the build-dep a sync of haskell-devscripts 0.6.13 from Debian
lenny would also be needed.

0.6.13 change two things. It bumps Standards-Version and fixes FTBFS
bugs by replacing one call of ghc-pkg with ghc-pkg6. The second
fix makes me think we want this version in Ubuntu anyway.

* haskell-devscripts 0.6.13 builds fine in an intrepid pbuilder.

* haskell-uft8-string 0.3.1.1-2 then builds fine in the pbuilder.

* xmonad-contrib 0.8-2 then (finally!) builds fine in the
pbuilder. The resulting packages have utf8 working just as it
  should.

This would be my preferred solution. It keeps Ubuntu in sync with
Debian and gives us a xmonad-contrib with working utf8.

If you think this might be a possible solution, then how should I
proceed. Should I file two extra FFEs for the syncs of
haskell-utf8-string and haskell-devscripts, or throw them into this
one? Not knowing this is the reason that I only briefly described
them, and not included diffstats, pbuilder logs etc yet.

[Bug 269652] Re: Worrying message ata4: EH pending after 5 tries, giving up from dmesg

2008-09-30 Thread Pär Andersson
waspbr:
No, this bug has nothing what so ever to do with Xorg, you should report a
separate bug for your xorg problems.

Mårten:
Yes, it was a change in sata_nv that caused the problem. To be more specific it
was commit 2fd673ecf0378ddeeeb87b3605e50212e0c0ddc6, as I wrote in my upstream
bug report.

For those not following the upstream bug, Tejun Heo have found and fixed
the problem. His patch is included in the newly released 2.6.27-rc8,
which means that as soon as Ubuntus kernel is rebased on rc8 we will get
the fix.

[Bug 185625] Re: sign the repository at ddebs.ubuntu.com

2008-07-15 Thread Pär Andersson
Reported on 2008-01-24 and not a single response from any ubuntu
developer or Security Team member about this?

All packages are built on the normal build servers. I really can't see
any reason for it to be hard to get ddebs.ubuntu.com signed, either by
the standard archive key or a separate one.

Two big problems with the current situation:

1. Many Ubuntu developers is probably using ddebs.ubuntu.com. I really
don't like developers of the distribution I use to get malicious
packages installed.

2. Users will be told to enable this repository to help triage bugs.
This teaches them that it is OK to ignore security warnings from APT.

The second problem is of course the same when using PPAs. But there the
problem is harder to solve, and is beeing discussed in bug #125103.

[Bug 228525] Re: googleearth-package 0.5.4 required from Debian

2008-05-14 Thread Pär Andersson
0.5.4 is now in intrepid and I can verify that it builds and works as
expected on hardy (I backported it using prevu).

I believe this should be fixed by an SRU.

SRU justification: the current version in hardy doesn't work at all.
How to reproduce the error: aptitude install googleearth-package;
make-googleearth-package
Suggested fix: sync 0.5.4 from intrepid, the changes between 0.5.2 and 0.5.4
are quite small:

 googleearth-package (0.5.4) unstable; urgency=low

   * Support Google Earth 4.3
   * We have to revert to using LD_LIBRARY_PATH instead of ld-linux.so.2,
otherwise Google Earth 4.3 can't work. There isn't any workaround
 known at this time.
   * Revert --quiet being the default. This totally messes up being able
to get error messages. The default verboseness problem is postponed
for a new major version release.

[Bug 212973] [NEW] tray icon in KDE4

The issue have been discussed in the KDE bugtracker, and was fixed in

from SVN as debian/patches/07-fix_kde4_tray_icon.dpatch.

[Bug 173833] Re: evdev mouse fails on hardy: cannot open input pEvdev

2008-03-28 Thread Pär Andersson
This bug is caused by an configuration change that is undocumented, the
man page contains options that are no longer valid. This is made worse
by the fact that the error message is very unclear.

Both problems are resolved in upstream git (freedesktop.org, not
debian).

The Debian package is also mainained in git, which makes me a bit unsure
of how to submit a patch for this. I guess I should do it the git way
and not submit a normal debdiff here?

My proposed solution is to simply cherry pick
7f1e8146d4b13929a86a4b80f783a720c1b5573a and
11cf9c92c0d31d1058ec6c013b7126bd8909beba from freedesktop. Those two
commits contain improved error messages, and an updated man page.

This is how I did this locally:
git clone git://git.debian.org/git/pkg-xorg/driver/xserver-xorg-input-evdev
git remote add xorg
git://anongit.freedesktop.org/git/xorg/driver/xf86-input-evdev
git fetch xorg
git-cherry-pick 7f1e8146d4b13929a86a4b80f783a720c1b5573a
git-cherry-pick 11cf9c92c0d31d1058ec6c013b7126bd8909beba

I then verified that the package still builds ok, the man-page is
updated, and when using an old xorg.conf Xorg.0.log now contains No
Device specified. instead of cannot open input pEvdev.

does not cause LP: #39459 to re-appear.

[Bug 73862] Re: Add optimized cipher modules to initramfs

2007-09-29 Thread Pär Andersson
I can confirm that this is not the case, as I do use such a setup in my
laptop. lsmod only shows aes, but not aes-i586.

Sorry, I was mistaken.

It would probably pop up if I had entered it in /etc/modules, but since
we cannot modify that file easily (you would need some magic to detect
the architecture and module name and stuff), it would be really great if
 this wasn't really necessary.

I think a better solution would be to create /etc/modprobe.d/cryptsetup and let
it contain (on amd64):
alias aes aes_x86_64
alias twofish twofish_x86_64
...

That would set the asm optimized modules as default.

However we could look into this for hardy. The version that have now
been included in gutsy will work fine and will give most users of
encrypted disks a nice speed boost. :-)

[Bug 92553] Re: No kernel debug image meta packages

2007-09-28 Thread Pär Andersson
I know it is not entirely correct to add ubuntu-main-sponsors to this.
However, the package is in main, and kernel team have completely ignored
this for four months now. (I have submitted this bug, sent e-mail to
their list, made a patch and sent that to the list etc.)

I also know that they probably simply have to much work to do, so this
way maybe some other in main sponsors have time to look at this. The bug
is trivial and easy to fix, but very annoying to those who actually use
the kernel debug packages.

Anyway the duplicated work doesn't matter, it wasn't that much. I only

2007-09-21 Thread Pär Andersson
I tried sending the following to launchpad by mail earler today, but it
must have gotten stuck somewhere...

Some people seems to think that the lib/lib32 issue on amd64 is
release-critical, and Scott have posted on the motu list that he won't have
time to fix this until later.

For this reason I have made a new version of the wine package that corrects
this problem. I have also renamed the orig.tar.gz, and corrected a small typo
in debian/rules. Anyway, these are all small changes so I have left Scott
Richie as original uploader as I do not which to take credit for his work.
The attached debdiff between his version on REVU and my version is only 93
lines.

Attached are debdiffs between latest Ubuntu version, and also between my
package and Scotts on REVU. I also attach diffstat, and buildlogs as required
by the FreezeExceptionProcess. I won't post wines own changelog, as you have
already ACKed that the latest crack is good :-)

[Bug 106382] Re: [sync request] Please sync debtorrent from Debian unstable (main)

2007-09-19 Thread Pär Andersson
Debtorrent seems like a great feature, but it is probably to late to get
it working for Gutsy?

It needs to have some extra repository meta data generated. For Debian
these files are available at http://merkel.debian.org/~ajt/extrapieces/.
This URL is also hard coded into the python source code.

To run on Ubuntu somebody would have to arrange for the same files to be
generated periodically for ubuntu using the included hippy.py script.
This needs to be run on some machine which have a local mirror. Then of
course the source needs to be changed to point to this URL, or better
make it a configure option.

[Bug 140666] changelogs.ubuntu.com lags behind archive

2007-09-18 Thread Pär Andersson
Public bug reported:

http://changelogs.ubuntu.com needs to be updated/synchronized with the
Ubuntu archive much more often.

Currently it lags several hours behind. This means that the show
changelog feature of aptitude, and probably other package managers, is
almost always broken for new versions of packages. This makes the
feature rather worthless as it is mainly when upgrading a package to a
new version that you wish to review the changelog before.

[Bug 73862] Re: Add optimized cipher modules to initramfs

2007-09-18 Thread Pär Andersson
Sorry for forgetting about this bug. Thank you Anthony porting this to a
newer crypsetup.

Reinhard: I only think this is needed for the root file system. If you
for example only have /home on dm-crypt then it will set up after
leaving initramfs. This means that all kernel modules are available and
insmod will be smart enough to load the optimized one.

The cupsys apparmor profile is still to restrictive. I am using cupsys

This is when trying to print to PDF, which seems to fail:

The following is when printing a single page to my USB printer that I think is

flashplugin-nonfree-9.0.48.0.0ubuntu9 did not attempt to fix this bug so

However you seem to have some other problem with your nspluginwrapper.

it is working fine for me. If it is not working for you then that is a
separate bug that you should report against the nspluginwrapper package.

Yes, bug 138145 is probably quite easy to fix, but please post those
comments on that on that bug instead of this one.

Also while I believe that your patch would work, it will install the
wrapped plugin the wrong way. -n is used to prevent nspluginwrapper from
creating symlinks as this is handeled by the alternatives system. The
real problem is that update-alternatives is called with the wrong path,
which my patch already fixes.

Do you also use amd64?

I suspect that an ordinary backtrace would be useless, as aMSN is
written in TCL, an interpreted language, so the backtrace would only be
of the interpreter. Also I would have to figure out where to put a
breakpoint, as aMSN as I said doesn't crash, but continue working.

I am sure that there are other, recommended ways of debugging TCL, I
don't know them and unfortunately don't have the time to research that
right now.
