I also removed indicator-multiload, logged out and back in, and the

2015-05-26 Thread RickB
My mysql instance was failing to start in my VM instance (Ubuntu 15.04).
So I uninstalled mysql-server then removed /var/lib/mysql /var/log/mysql
/etc/mysql.

I had hoped that a clean re-install would fix the startup problem, but
now I have another problem due to this bug. I see the same error
messages that are reported above.

Depending on how it crashes, ctrl-alt-F1 may or may not work. Obviously,
when it works, a clean reboot is possible. When it doesn't work, the
machine is entirely hung and only a hard power reset will recover it.

[Bug 437649] Re: bluetoothd Permission denied (13) when connecting A2DP headset

2012-01-31 Thread RickB
I have a new Novatech laptop with Ubuntu 11.10, and a new Plantronic
BB903+.

When I enable BT and then attempt to connect the headset service using
the system-tray applet, syslog gets the following:

Jan 31 17:39:53 krum bluetoothd[1251]: HCI dev 0 up
Jan 31 17:39:53 krum bluetoothd[1251]: Adapter /org/bluez/1251/hci0 has been
enabled
Jan 31 17:39:53 krum bluetoothd[1251]: Adapter /org/bluez/1251/hci0 has been
enabled
Jan 31 17:40:08 krum bluetoothd[1251]: Permission denied (13)

So I installed Blueman and this works a bit better: for A2DP I get a
successful link:

Jan 31 17:45:47 krum kernel: [ 2640.281203] input: FF:66:DD:22:FF:11 as
/devices/virtual/input/input16
Jan 31 17:45:47 krum rtkit-daemon[1590]: Successfully made thread 2937 of
process 2062 (n/a) owned by '1000' RT at priority 5.
Jan 31 17:45:47 krum rtkit-daemon[1590]: Supervising 4 threads of 1 processes
of 1 users.

But even with Blueman, the permission error arises everytime I try
instead to use the headset service or the input service:

Jan 31 17:47:50 krum bluetoothd[1251]: Permission denied (13)

Only A2DP works.

Any suggestions?

[Bug 190144] Re: Wireless connection lost during heavy network load.

2009-12-28 Thread RickB
I too have this problem. I have a Samsung R620 with a RealTek 8192E and
Ndiswrapper runs OK until I transfer a large file. It usually fails
quickly - after a few tens of Mb transferred.

If I open the Windows Wireless Drivers control panel and remove then re-
add the WinXP driver then the wifi comes back to life. Until it dies
again.

[Bug 300271] Re: Setting the network proxy doesn't change the synaptic proxy settings (gnome-network-preferences) for authenticated proxies

2009-12-24 Thread RickB
That's a good description - I had been thinking along the same lines.
This is not just an implementation bug - it needs broader thinking to
produce a joined-up solution.

As far as security is concerned, /etc/environment and /etc/apt/apt.conf
open a BIG can of worms.

[Bug 475617] Re: Audio Programs not releasing Audio Device

2009-11-05 Thread RickB
Here is a bit more info with entries from the Syslog. More
experimentation has shown that there is some sort of relationship with
firefox a recent update seemed to fix things somewhat

With Firefox up, but not playing sounds after a clean reboot all audio
devices work, but once sound is played within firefox all audiodevices
fail shutting down firefox releases whatever lock is own there and the
devices can play again, however after restarting firefox the audio on
firefox fails and so does the audio on the sound devices here tail
of the syslog entry for those events.

[Bug 204616] Re: Firefox doesn't use the ignore list of the system-wide proxy config

2009-09-17 Thread RickB
Confirmed still a problem for Firefox 3.5.
I tried ignored host 10.0.0.0/8 - this works for Epiphany but not for
Firefox.

+1 for a fix for Firefox 3.5

[Bug 341442] [NEW] package linux-image-2.6.27-13-generic 2.6.27-13.29 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 17

2009-03-11 Thread RickB
Public bug reported:

I installed the ubuntu-xen virtualisation package and then decided to
remove it.

Since then my sound isn't working. I tried
sudo aptitude --purge reinstall linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils
linux-image-`uname -r` linux-ubuntu-modules-`uname -r`

and that's why the crash happened.

[Bug 300271] Re: Setting the network proxy doesn't change the synaptic proxy settings (gnome-network-preferences) for authenticated proxies

2009-01-27 Thread RickB
When the Apply system-wide... button is pressed, changes are written
to /etc/environment. However, this file is written incorrectly because
the username/password is omitted. Also there is no no_proxy setting for
the ignored hosts.

This is easy to observe. Change the gnome-network-preferences. Press
Apply system-wide. Open a terminal and

set | grep proxy; cat /etc/environment

to observe the differences.

[Bug 289466] Re: Network Manager 0.7 applet not Appearing if there are managed entries in /etc/network/interfaces

2008-11-11 Thread RickB
I can confirm this bug is still live today.

Workaround:

I commented out all the entries in /etc/network/interfaces, restarted
and now everything works just about as I'd expect.

[Bug 257077] [NEW] Thunderbird should support ISO646-US character encoding

2008-08-11 Thread RickB
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: thunderbird

I received an email containing the header

Content-Type: text/html; charset=ISO646-US

Sequences such as =A3 should be displayed as the UK pound sterling
symbol.

ISO646-US should (I think) be interpreted as US-ASCII, although
Wikipedia states that ASCII has been extended and hints that it may
actually be a subset of Latin1.
