Can everyone clear their gnome-shell extensions and check this isn't the
cause of the issue? If so, I think we need a better way of handling
extension crashes.

[Bug 1574069] Re: zfs dkms kernel module failed to build

2016-06-22 Thread jondee
@kiki I don't believe so, I'll keep an a special eye out for it, but I
imagine I would have seen it by now tbh. I think nearly all of the bug
reports come from the upgrade process where the upgrade tool
automatically starts a bug report on launchpad whenever it encounters an
error.

"but perhaps we could make it so installing the Xenial kernel removed
it." Sounds perfect :)

[Bug 1574069] Re: zfs dkms kernel module failed to build

2016-06-22 Thread jondee
@kiko You're probably quite right that it's the zfs-dkms package that's
the problem. However removing it now seem's rather fruitless now that
the upgrade is completed (which is the only case where I've personally
seen this bug occur), and the package is not causing any problems/
errors presently (so I'd have very little to report back even if I did
remove it from my existing system :) )

More to the point, if everything you're saying is correct, shouldn't we
be working to remove this package from the 16.04 repos and most
importantly ensure it is removed during the upgrade process, so that
users don't have to suffer a failed upgrade?

[Bug 1574069] Re: zfs-dkms 0.6.5.6-0ubuntu8: zfs kernel module failed to build

2016-06-19 Thread jondee
@kiko Interesting thought there! That could be it! I am aware of the
change, however from a users point of view, I believe enabling the
zfsutils-linux package remains the same to actually use ZFS.

Perhaps the issue is the zfs-dkms package should be removed (entirely or
as a dependency of zfsutils-linux) in 16.04? The zfs-dkms package, is
however still installed on my system and it doesn't seem to be causing
any issues presently.

[Bug 1550824] [NEW] Reproducable hard lock on ISO mount

2016-02-27 Thread jondee
Public bug reported:

Release:15.10 (amd64)

When opening an ISO I have recently downloaded, using the "Open With >
Disk Image Mounter" feature of Ubuntu it causes a hard system lock.
(Not even pressing REISUB works) This is not a freak one off occurrence,
as the same thing will happen again when opening the same file.

Sadly, nothing is logged either before the crash in the system log, so it's
hard to find out what's specifically causing this. My hunch is either:
1) Something in the ISO that doesn't get handled properly (less likely)
2) The fact the file-system where the ISO is held is using ZFS (installed from
the Ubuntu repos) and something in gnome-disk-utility doesn't handle this
properly. (I find more likely as ZFS on Ubuntu is still fairly experimental)

Anyone care to share some experience or hunches in how to go figure out
what's causing this horrendous bug? I'm going to try and place the file
on an ext4 partition and see what that does, but I don't really want to
keep on risking hard-locking the system if I don't have to!

Thanks!

[Bug 1441487] Re: Running any Java program produces messages in the terminal, while rendering many Java applications broken

2015-10-05 Thread jondee
@erich Thank you for explaining what it is about Jayatana that makes it
break so easily. I understand the Java side of the issue fairly well,
and empirically, about how much Jayatana was breaking things. But I
wasn't really sure what was happening on the system/ JVM side other than
the issues occurring were getting fairly low level and your explanation
about the lack of safe threading between the processes helps this make
sense!

[Bug 1441487] Re: Running any Java program produces messages in the terminal, while rendering many Java applications broken

2015-10-02 Thread jondee
@bademux "PLEASE dont fix what is not broken!" - sadly though, this
statement is not true as Jayatana is presently very broken both for
existing apps and for apps using Swing I've been developing in Java
myself.

I do however share your opinion that ideally we should by trying to keep
the UX unified where possible. However Java apps have always been a bit
different in that they never ever did natively use GTK, as most Java
apps are implemented in Swing (even on Windows). I also like Jayatana
when it works, but it's Jayatana itself that is supposed to be a
compatibility layer between Swing and Unity/ the Ayatana project so I
don't understand what your idea of another compatibility would actually
look like?!? :S If the Jayatana project becomes a bit more tested,
matured and more actively developed than maybe we can can start to
consider it again in the future.

[Bug 1441487] Re: Running any Java program produces messages in the terminal, while rendering many Java applications broken

2015-09-29 Thread jondee
"I tend to think that we should take the pragmatic approach for now, and
remove the env variable initializing it (still giving the option to the
user to export it for applications he knows that works well with it)." I
wholeheartedly agree with this. Giving the user and/or developer the
choice is the best way forward.

The ideal situation would be that developers enable Jayatana in their
apps for their programs they know work well with it and if they don't
the user should be able to do it for them when they know the app works
fine.

If we want to make a really good experience for the average user, we
could always try and implement a white-listing system for Java apps in
Ubuntu (particularly for packaged Java apps)? I appreciate that might be
a bit of a fiddly work around though! :)

that is breaking NetBeans? The linked bug's title contains "Running any

that Jayatana isn't translating the Java Swing API very well as opposed
to NetBeans getting confused by command line output?!?

default this is being sent to the NetBeans developers rather than the
responsible Jayatana developer(s). I've personally had many problems

when in it's current state, it's so clearly incompatible with so many

they're now referencing each other? These files weren't originally ever
together at the same time until they were deleted, and then this problem
occurred when they were moved into the trash together. I wasn't aware
Nautilus would try to resolve the symlinks in some way, but surely
crashing when this situation occurs is still undesirable behaviour?

Many thanks for helping work out what was going wrong though :)

[Bug 1452084] Re: Segmentation fault whilst opening Rubbish Bin/ trash://

2015-05-21 Thread jondee
Can confirm gvfs-ls trash:/// works fine producing the output of all the
files in the trash:// location.

I have another account on the system with plenty of files in that
trash:// works perfectly fine for. Guest mode trash:// also works
perfectly fine.

The program still crashes with SIGSEGV (__GI__IO_default_xsputn
(f=0x7f7ff600, data=optimised out, n=38) at genops.c:463) with
python-nautilus uninstalled and pruged out (I did not restart the
system, but I ensured that nautilus was completely killed before I re-
attempted the test)

I'm guessing there's probably something in my trash:// that's triggering
this right? Any particular file types I should look for? Interestingly
opening `nautilus ~/.local/share/Trash/files` causes a sefault too!

[Bug 1452084] [NEW] Segmentation fault whilst opening Rubbish Bin/ trash://

Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 15.04 amd64 on an i5-4670K CPU

Hi, I'm currently getting a consistent SIGSEGV from Nautilus when
attempting to open the rubbish bin. This happens whether I click the
bookmark on the left or instantaneously if I run `nautilus trash://`.
The crash occurs before the icons have fully loaded, but a second after
the rubbish bin is selected.

I installed the debug symbols for nautilus and ran with gdb and got the
following output:

[Bug 1384342] Re: kernel messages intel_crtc_wait_for_pending_flips correlate to compiz hang

2015-01-30 Thread jondee
@rockorequin thanks for the very clear answer! It appears that the
default governor in the newer Ubuntu kernels has become P-state now
then, as opposed to the older ACPI CPUfreq! Now I know that it's simply
changed, I'll be using the new P-state governors! :)

@jsalisbury just installed, I'll let you know how I get on over the next
week! :)

[Bug 1384342] Re: kernel messages intel_crtc_wait_for_pending_flips correlate to compiz hang

2015-01-24 Thread jondee
Is there a way to add the mainline kernel as a true PPA so that we get
updates automatically?

Would this also restore the CPU governors? The only problem I've found
when installing and using the custom kernels directly from the .deb
files (like from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v3.19-rc3-vivid/ ), is that the only CPU governors I'm able
to use are Powersave and Performance. Using the stock kernel allowed me
to use On-demand (My favourite) and Conservative as well! Any other way
to fix this?

@jsalisbury am also testing for the past 7-8 hours now and so far has
been stable as well so thanks for the update! :)

I think it would be too early to declare this bug fixed yet though!
However, I recommend everyone gets this kernel (http://kernel.ubuntu.com
/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.19-rc3-vivid/) and joins in with the testing so
soon the devs be able to declare this bug fixed once and for all :)

yet. but I'll let you know if it happens!

[Bug 1384342] Re: kernel messages intel_crtc_wait_for_pending_flips correlate to compiz hang

2014-11-02 Thread jondee
I'm also unable to find any segfaults in the Xorg logs which is strange
:/ Also as a sidenote sometimes running 'killall -9 compiz' can help
recovery back to a working VT and stop the lock-up (if there is one -
I'm running multiple desktop sessions), if the compiz on another VT has
crashed!

[Bug 1381148] [NEW] GoogleLocAPI can now longer be used to get Geodata

2014-10-14 Thread jondee
Public bug reported:

I'm new to NameBench so I'm not entirely sure what this data was for,
but I can see that it's trying to get JSON data from an API that doesn't
exist anymore. Apparently it was shutdown in 2012
(https://code.google.com/p/gears/wiki/GeolocationAPI). The issue is also
referenced upstream here:
https://code.google.com/p/namebench/issues/detail?id=256

Terminal error output shown below:

* Failed to use GoogleLocAPI: simplejson.scanner.JSONDecodeError Expecting

Failed to get Geodata: socket.timeout timed out

The application still works but it causes it to hang on start-up so
maybe an easy solution is just to remove the code that does this looking
up? Or alternatively supplement an alternative API!?

Tested under Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS and namebench 1.3.1+dfsg-2.

[Bug 1029289] Re: Need to authorize my google account each time I boot the computer

2014-08-23 Thread jondee
Can confirm the workaround seems to work for me too other than the fact
that there's no calendar now of course! XD One strange thing I noticed
though is in Evolution if you go on a Google account for contacts you
get a This query did not complete successfully.
GDBus.Error:org.gtk.GDBus.UnmappedGError.Quark._e_2dclient_2derror_2dquark.Code5:
Authentication required error message so I don't know as this is to do
with authentication if this is related or not! :S
