This is great news! I no longer use Ubuntu (switched to elementary),
but this was one of my major gripes. Now, if they could see to it to
add the ability to remove the launcher permanently, then I'd certainly
be tempted back. Offering such user control and choice is a GOOD thing!

I can confirm that this issue not only effects my machine, but also my
mums and my girlfriends (both of which use Karmic - not Lucid). So this
issue is not just limited to a specific machine, nor a specific
distribution. It is pretty random, sometimes it'll do it twice in 10
boots, others it'll
Sometimes it can go for more boots without a hitch. But at some point,
seemilngly at random, it will fail to launch during startup. If GDM did
the same it'd be a show-stopper, but for some reason, that never does
this ;)

I upgraded to Karmic, but still having the same issue with the touchpad
being detected as PS/2 Generic Mouse, instead of a Synaptics touchpad.
tpconfig, however, seems to recognize it:

Trying Synaptics detection.
[query 00 = 0x60
again I can confirm this to be true

hilarious isn't it. I'm sure at some point _someone_ will realise that
not everyone is capable of rectifying this by editing source files
themselves - like my mum for one.

non-gpl - do this (svn etc etc)

this is insane!
if i wanted an identical debian system I'd use debian. games like this
which are _actually_good_ should perhaps be kept in the repo's? I for
one am not the only person stumped by this bad decision from the
development team.
