Re: [Bug 11334] Re: MASTER Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste
Michael Nagel, I have read carefully your comment and I think you are right for the non-static data and it might be also complicated to deal with the history of clipboard managers and this kind of data also... We could have a history per clipboard type, the text history would have more items than bitmap type, etc. But there is some problems with the clipboard manager workaround : Parcellite -> it is not a Gnome application (does not use gconf, stay in the notification area, etc) and it is not going to be maintained anymore (see parcellite website) Glipper -> dead for three years, and it is written in the mailing list of the project that it won't be maintained anymore If we want to have a clipboard manager integrated to distributions, the first thing to have is maybe a well maintained application for that first ? I think we should continue the development of Glipper because it is written in python and it is easy to patch, maintain and it is also a real gnome application. Plugins are also very easy to add. Is someone interesting in making a fork or something about Glipper ? Once we have a maintained clipboard manager, we could add more features like the ability to manage different kinds of contents of the clipboard. 2010/5/24, Michael Nagel : > Making the xserver the owner of all content is pretty much the same as > using a clipboard manager and making that the owner of all content. > There are working clipboard managers ready to be installed from the > repository -- namely klipper, glipper and parcellite . they are the more > or less official workaround as suggested by collin watson (see comment # > 207 ) why none of these clipboard managers is installed by default goes > beyond my understanding. > > There is one problem with these clipboard manager that causes problems > with programs like e.g. the gimp and other, that is quite hard to fix > properly. > > When exporting some lines of text to the clipboard the suggested > approach (just grabbing it when it is exported) will work just fine. > With binary data like images the problem gets more complicated because > now you have a lot more data and it potentially contains lots of > troublesome bits (nullbytes and the like) that must not crash nor > confuse your clipboard manager. but that is pretty much solved by > current clipboard mangers, too. > > The real problem is about nonstatic data. [Bug 18995] Re: [MASTER] "Open With" dialog not user-friendly
Yes I think it is unreachable for the one hundred paper cuts project. This bug is clearer for me now. A freedesktop spec would be great. There is several solutions : * a spec to open an "open with" dialog, according to a mime type * a spec to get informations about applications that can open a mime type. Then an application could display these applications the way it wants. See the manual of xdg-mime, this command could be extended to have such informations for points 2. I think this could resolve our problems. On first comment on this bug : "A more user-friendly way would be to list all of the known programs installed that are available to open files with" -> Second point "Other..." or "Advanced... button" -> First point -- [MASTER] "Open With" dialog not user-friendly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/18995 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 18995] Re: [MASTER] "Open With" dialog not user-friendly
@PomCompot > Ok thank your for your response. You are right, if I modify in Nautilus the application which opens a PDF file for example, Firefox will use this application to open PDF files by default (unless I have configured firefox to open it with another application). So Firefox already uses xdg-open by default. The thing we need is the Nautilus (or desktop environment) dialog to choose the application because the firefox one is not userfriendly. If this dialog is hardwired in Nautilus, I don't think we can do something easily with a plugin to fix this. Sorry for my bad english, I wanted to say that there is a lot of messages here and it is difficult to see the important informations. I understand this can be a hard work to be fixed upstream. I was thinking, as Coren said, that we could do a small firefox addon, while this bug is being fixed by mozilla. The open with dialog I was speaking about is shown on the image I have attached with this comment. I don't think we can open it with freedesktop commands like xdg. A better window would be the tab "open with" on the properties dialog of a file, but it seems more complicated to implement ... Anyway, if you think we cannot do a workaround with a firefox addon, I give up. [Bug 18995] Re: [MASTER] "Open With" dialog not user-friendly
@Coren > If it is not possible, what is the goal of this bug ? I understood the problem was the open with dialog which is not user friendly when we want to choose the app we want to use to open the file. If there is no cross-linux desktop API, then perhaps we can cheat and detect the desktop environment with the extension, or perhaps, make it configurable in the addon configuration window. The point is mozilla is not going to resolve this problem until a lot of time, so instead of waiting for that, we could create a quick and dirty fix with a firefox addon. @John Vivirito > Sorry, but this bug is huge and it is difficult to see the main informations. [Bug 73343] Re: Gnome-panel should have a global lock for applets
It seems to be easy to solve : There is a gconf key to do lock / unlock all applets : "/apps/panel/global/locked_down". If some people like the possibility to lock individual panel objects, another key in gconf could enable or disable the global lock. -- Gnome-panel should have a global lock for applets https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/73343 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

(but I remember this bug also happened on 8.10) This is what I did : I connected Nautilus to a FTP (ftperso.free.fr) I right click on a file and copy it on my desktop. -> the copy operation window stay opened and is hanging. -> If I click on the stop button, the button becomes disabled but nothing happens, the transfert is not canceled. For now, the file operation window is hanging for 10 minutes. What I know is that on ftpperso.free.fr, only one or two connections are allowed per user at the same time (I am not sure). I think there is 2 thingst to investigate : Perhaps no timeout has been configured on ftp operations ? The thread which connect to the server cannot be interrupted by the Thread UI ? I am not sure is this problem is from nautilus or gvfs. On which sources should I take a look ? ** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Description changed: Binary package hint: nautilus Hi. I am on ubuntu 9.04 amd64. [Bug 301332] Re: linux-rt : Xorg crash with nvidia driver installed
I think it is a bug. The only thing I see, is if I want to do computer music, I install the linux-rt kernel, and when I start on it, Xorg is crashing if I have previously installed the nvidia-restricted-drivers (which are proposed by ubuntu on first boot). For now, it is impossible to do computer music easily on Ubuntu for people which has an nvidia card. We have no informations when X is crashing, and what we should do. I already tried to play with nvidia driver sources in the past, recompiled it with the linux-rt kernel, etc. There was a lot of problems, I had to purge a lot of packages (all related with nvidia, like restricted-modules, which was a problem because it was disabling also other restricted drivers) Then the drivers was not working anymore. It is not a clean and easy way to have the linux-rt working. I really need the nvidia restricted drivers to work because I would like to use the twinview function to do computer music. Perhaps I should use Ubuntu Studio, but I think it is a shame to have to install two OS just for this problem. -- linux-rt : Xorg crash with nvidia driver installed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/301332 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 209009] [NEW] fsck cannot be skipped at boot time
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: usplash Hi. I am waiting for this possibility for a while, and finally I saw on ubuntu brainstorm (http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/11/) that this idea has been implemented. I am on kubuntu 8.04 amd64 with reiserFS and nothing happens if I push this keys, it is impossible to skip the fsck check. I think this is a very important to be able to to skip this test. [Bug 206878] Re: Console text boot instead of usplash
I think it is a problem with non ext3 fs because I have this problem with ReiserFS root partition.
