ago, but the driver has yet to be added to the repositories.

physical address space used.
This "empty" space doesn't even take up swap space, let alone virtual
memory. It does take up some page tables but that's it.
Having the extra virtual address space there is actually a good thing.

The dependencies tree seem to be severely broken on mesa-lts-quantel.
If I try to install it, they produce issues by asking to uninstall a
huge list of packages.

I noticed an issue where memtest86+ can't boot on EFI systems with the
current default grub.
It seems to be lacking the Linux16 modules required to boot that form of
image.

Would creating a build optimized for size help here? I don't think the
memory alignment build options really will give much advantage for boot
time on Grub, it's only a few kilobytes of code, and most of it is only
run under certain situations.

real mode binaries.
You might be able to workarround this by using the chainloader mode to
bootstrap into another capable bootloader, and then launching memtest86
from the secondary loader. The .iso image form of memtest86(+)

It should be considered a high priority long term project.
