Note: This issue is not about the package size error in a third party repo - I do not blame Ubuntu for problems with that. BTW - here are s many free pixels on this screen - why not add two or three small sentences about text formatting syntax available in this extremely primitive text input box? Is there any text formatting at all? Why not put just a little bit of love to the user perspective and experience? This hit me on 18.04 and did kill my saturday morning - thank you very much. Also a BIG THANK YOU to Graham Smith for pointing out why this bug exists - it is very important to take the role of the one that tells the truth even when it hurts sometimes. It is of course possible to write more softly, but sometimes it is needed to point out that something is really a bad idea if it is a really bad idea. It would be interesting to read why SourceStam was not used here and why was that BuildID implemented? Public bug reported: I use Ubuntu 15.10 and installed the Virtual Box "virtualbox 5.0.10-dfsg-2ubuntu1" package from the standard repository. The application itself works well. However I want to use the virtualbox init.d script to save the virtual machine. Therefore I changed the /etc/default/virtualbox file as follows: # SHUTDOWN_USERS="foo bar" # check for running VMs of user 'foo' and user 'bar' # 'all' checks for all active users # SHUTDOWN=poweroff # SHUTDOWN=acpibutton # SHUTDOWN=savestate # select one of these shutdown methods for running VMs # acpibutton and savestate causes the init script to wait # 30 seconds for the VMs to shutdown SHUTDOWN_USERS="all" SHUTDOWN=savestate I can call the stop function of the virtualbox init.d script manually and it saves the running virtual machine successfully. The script waits 30 seconds to allow the VMs to shutdown (as stated in the config file). However, if I shutdown the system, it is turned of immediately and the VM is killed. It seems that the systemd shutdown does not wait for the virtualbox script. This affects me too (using ubuntu 12.04 beta 2). Just some remarks: 1. This bug did not existed prior the latest updates (today I have updated and my card reader stopped worikng) 2. I am using a 32 bit ubuntu and the directories start with i384 rather then x86_64 3. Well, the Ubuntu upgrade caused me to lose access to an important tool (apparently not because of a bug but on purpose, so all the worse) - so I think this is a good place to mention solutions. However XFE does not seem to have any way to modify metadata. And Dolphin has metadata but does not seem to support emblems. So not really alternatives. The best alternative I found is Thunar. Even transferring the Nautilus metadata (can query them with gvfs) to Thunar (can set them with tdbtool) is not too difficult. [Bug 874631] [NEW] sound stutters every few seconds
Public bug reported: Any sound or music has a strange stuttering about every 5-10 seconds. Not the usual buffer underrun noise but the volume changes for a moment. When I run pavucontrol and go to the Output Devices tab I can see how the Port dropbox switches to Analog Headphones for a moment every few seconds and then back to Analog Output. The volume sliders also move for a moment whenever it happens. I tried Unity, KDE (phonon gstreamer as well as VLC) and XFCE, killing all the processes I could find and also tried Banshee, Amarok and Audacious. It's always the same. Every few seconds Pulseaudio will change the Port for just a moment and also change volume. If I manually change to Analog Heaphones I cannot hear sound and it switches back to Analog Output after a while. I do not have anything plugged into the headphones jack. pacmd list-sinks says this at the end: ports: analog-output: Analog Output (priority 9900, available: unknown) analog-output-headphones: Analog Headphones (priority 9000, available: no) active port: analog-output Which suggests PA knows that only one port is available so I'm puzzled what causes this constant port and volume change. Needless to say I cannot use PA with this - if there's any workaround (can I force-disable that headphones port somehow?) I'd be really thankful. For now I had to completely removed PA from Ubuntu and am playing directly through Alsa, using alsamixer for volume control. Of course it means I don't have per-application volume nor does the normal mixer work so I hope this can be fixed soon. I managed to fix the problem. The cause was that there was only a K (kill) entry in the /etc/rc.2 directory but no start entry. Hello, googling around I came to this thread and I have a similar issue. We use an all-in-one HP3030 over the local WLAN. The HP is connected to a Fritz-box via USB. Quite often my wife can not print and when I check, the printer is not activated. So I activate the printer using the root password and all is fine until next time. Somehow the printer gets deactivated from time to time. To tell the whole story: every night from 1-5 the WLAN and the printer are switched off automatically. The PC is sometimes running when the printer is switched off, but usually the printer is under power, when the PC gets active from boot or hibernate. I would be really happy for any hints and I am ready to help to localize this bug. Hi again! The cooling- fan seems to work fine again when I boot the live-cd with the nolapic parameter. :-D But I am not sure how to get it to work if I installed Lucid on my harddisk. :-? I hope someone will get in to this issue and make sure that an Acer 5315 laptop will function without having to set the nolapic parameter manually. I am sure that there are many with the same laptop having the same problem as me. I took the risk and installed Lucid alpha 3 on my laptop after reading this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1376547 I edited the grub2 config-file with this command: gksudo gedit /etc/default/grub and added nolapic to this line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash nolapic And updated grub2 with this command: sudo update-grub After a reboot the cooling fan now seemingly work as it should. Consider this as a workaround. An average user should not experience this problem and be forced to manually edit grub2's config file. This is massively FRUSTRATING! Every time my wife uses our PC she finds that she can't play any sound. She has to reboot the PC which is a pain and means that I loose anything I had open. I've told her to do this because quite rightly, she shouldn't have to run scripts etc just to play some music! Apple Mac, none of these problems, Windows XP/Vista/7 non of these problems. Why can't Ubuntu get these things right before it changes the login screen and various other nice changes. There's an update every 6 months and updates constantly but still this sound problems persist or re-emerge. i'm on Karmic btw. Please, Canonical, sort this one out, it's embarrassing for your ambassadors when their King wets it's self like a new born. Thanks for helping, I am over all very impressed by the level of support I received. Given that the patch works, but I cannot apply because it causes other problems. Do you know if there is any workaround? If I attach an HP monitor to my PC detect it then plug back the IIyama monitor it works fine, the only problem is that if I restart the computer I loose the settings. I downloaded the new kernel, and I can set the display 1600x1200 I was happy and excited... then I tried to install the free VMWare Player. It first complained about the missing kernel headers for 2.6.32-020632rc6 which I donwloaded from the same location as the kernel. Then VMWare appeared in the start menu, but at first start it wanted to compile further components which failed. I uninstalled the new kernel re started the VMWare installation and it worked fine. Hi I removed xorg.conf and I created the three files for you. These are without setting the nomodeset because ubuntu wont start up when setting nomodeset (Last time I added nomodeset to the menu, but pressed escape to exit so the modifications were lost). If it helps I can boot my machine with an Ubuntu 9.04 live CD where the 1600x1200 resolution is available and send you log files. Hi Yes you are reading the logs correctly. Actually I have two identical IIyama monitors. One on the VGA the other On the HDMI.I added the nomodeset on the grub menu, but it had no positive effect. I also tried to disable the monitor on VGA, but the 1600x1200 resolution does not become available on the HDMI output. However I attached an HP monitor to the HDMI detected it, so I had one IIyama on the VGA and one HP on the HDMI. At this point 1600x1200 was available on both of my monitors, selected it, then put replaced the HP monitir on HDMI with the IIyama and it still worked. Of course it only works until I detect again the monitors. I send you attached the output when only the IIyama was attached on HDMI. This is a 5 years old monitor with DVI and D-sub inputs. Thank you for looking into it. Your suggestion is a very good one. The SD card that was not working, was one I purchased before I got my current camera. My old camera was a cheap one, brand name 'Concord'. My new one is a Canon Powershot A430'. Also, all cards have been used successfully in my Palm Tx pda. So, I put the suspect SD card in the Canon camera, and did a low level format. I took one photo as well, before returning it to the Ubuntu machine. Now it is detected, and Ubuntu even offers to import photos from it. So, I guess the old camera (or the original format on the card when I bought it - as I can't remember ever formating it) wasn't quite standard or correct? Anyway, it's working now, so I suppose we can't really blame Ubuntu. In a way I'm glad, as I have become a fan of Ubuntu :-) Thanks again for your follow up on this. Public bug reported: I have a memory card reader plugged into USB. I insert an SD memory card into the reader. No GUI popup to handle the card insertion. However, if I insert my Canon camera into the USB port, it does pop up a dialog asking if I want to import photos. I would have expected something similar for the SD card, or at least it should automount somewhere. Since some OS updates, now I can only choose between Standard (poor sound) and hw:0,0.
