I again tried different drivers with options I took from the driver's
documentation but I could not work out how to get around this bug.

Please try without them. Try also the Ubuntu 8.04 live CD.
Uninstall compiz if you're not able to disable it. Please attach a new

not loaded so right now its the mesa drivers !

Does it crash with the -ati (radeon) driver or with fglrx? I don't get
your comments to make any sense with what the files show.

it crashes with the autodetection xorg.conf ...
if i edit the autodetection xorg.conf and add section device ...
radeon it crashes
if i use the xorg.conf i still have from gutsy -- section device
fglrx the system runs without any problem ... but the driver is not
working ( fglrxinfo says mesa )
Please try a Device Section with only:
Driver ati
Option BusType PCI

i have edited the xorg.conf file i have from gutsy ( not the
autodetection file ! )
glxinfo does not crash now as long as i don't start compiz -- glxinfo
and compiz.real crash !

Does the whole system freeze now with compiz? Compiz makes many things
crash, so this can be another problem than what you saw initially.
