This may be a stupid question, but since Ubuntu sees only 1 hard drive,
could it be that there really is only 1 hard drive, since Windows
recognizes different partitions and displays them as separate drives,
i.e. is there physically 2 hard drives in the machine and have you ever
checked this?

Thanks for the reply... There are no stupid questions. You make an
excellent point, however, there really are two physical hard drives:
My primary drive is: Seagate ST3120026AS 114439 MB SATA NTFS
My Second drive is : Seagate ST3400633AS 381552 MB SATA NTFS
Both are Seagate, and SATA
Which version did you try?

downloaded Ubuntu 8.10, created and booted from the .iso image disk and ran
