Found the problem by an Ubuntu Forums post. I can confirm that, after a clean Jaunty install, the xserver-xorg- input-synaptics package is NOT installed. Did you check bug 320639 which that other one has since been marked as a duplicate of? There are also two others of interest listed in the bug, it would be good if you can have a look through them. There have been lots of problems with touchpads in the latest Jaunty updates, but everybody seems to have a slightly different complaint about the symptoms. Since there should be enough information here, I'll mark this bug as triaged so a developer can look at it. Do you mean that you are able to click the physical buttons at the bottom, or that you are able to tap the pad to create the same functionality of a mouse click? I am able to tap the pad to get the same functionality of a mouse click. When you say you can't scroll, do you mean you can't scroll down pages using the edge of the touchpad, or you can't move the pointer around the screen? By the way I see that there is an update to the xserver-xorg-input-synaptics which Timo filed the bug under (beat me to it!), the latest in Jaunty is now 0.99.3-1ubuntu2 Please also update your system, check that you have this upgrade included, and restart X to see if the problem disappears. Thanks Bobby. I really don't understand why your pad isn't working, can you please check that it is enabled from System->Preferences->Mouse --> Touchpad tab. My alpha-3 install of Jaunty doesn't have an xorg.conf, so let's try removing yours and let auto detection take full effect. Please run sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak Then restart X. I found the problem: For some reason the package xserver-xorg-input- synaptics was deinstalled during the update procedure. I have no idea how or why this happened.
