I don't know what happened, but (after update?) things are -currently-
looking a lot better. My asus still overheats from time to time (typical
for asus apperently) and then kacpid kicks in, but now, instead of
staying up there hogging my cpu, it falls back into the small cpu-usage
category.
I tried with acpi=off = works (starts up nicely, no kacpid to be seen),
but after 10 min, my whole system freezes.:(
acpi=ht = just tried it, but didn't work. I've got kacpid at 88% again
I'm not giving up !!! :)

sorry to hear kacpid is still giving you trouble. My case went away after I
installed a high end sound card. Not sure why but it did.
Some of the comments I got from the guru's at Ubuntu, was to try liveCD of
the last version of Ubuntu. It did not help in my case.
Have you tried modifing the
looks like I finally found a solution
I removed powernowd
sudo aptitude purge powernowd
And now my laptop is not running into the high cpu usage for kacpid
Hope this fixes it for good .

Hello,
I'm also having these problems on and off.
All of a sudden kacpid takes up to 80% and more, the temperature starts rising
and reaches up to levels of 93°. crossing of course my max temp level and
kicking in the fan at full speed, really anoyingly.
My system is an Asus laptop M5000

Have you recently installed any new hardware on the laptop? Maybe changed
the BIOS settings? The reason I ask, is the issue I was having went away
when I installed some new hardware (sound card, in my case). Can't explain
it, but it did. Also, in my case kacpid was only going up high for one

Hi -
might want to add a tag for Karmic, as well as Jaunty, as I tried karmic
(from a liveCD) and it too showed the smae problem.

Hi --
Just got done creating and booting from a liveCD of Karmic (9.10
release), and unfortunately the problem is still present. Below is key
data showing the successful boot of Karmic and that kacpid was consuming
65% of CPU0 Time still.
Linux ubuntu 2.6.31-14-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 16

Thank you for your report. Can you please also get a tarball of /proc/acpi
directory
cp -r /proc/acpi /tmp

and attach that to this report.
Also, are you able to test this in Karmic? You should be able to
reproduce this from a LiveCD. Thanks in
Hi -
Thanks so much for getting back to me on this. Attached is the tar file
of the ACPI directory as requested.
I'll work on getting a liveCD of 9.10 going. It will be another day
before I get it done. Also, I checked my update logs, and I did not
see any updates to ACPI. Maybe I did not look
Thanks for attaching that, we'll let a kernel developer decide what's
going on - ACPI is a standard for power management, and is in the domain
of the kernel as it uses modules that implement power management. I'll
mark this bug as Triaged so a developer can have a look, but please do
let us know
