[Bug 685611] Re: [Natty] Booting fails because of GRUB setting set gfxpayload=$linux_gfx_mode

2013-01-30 Thread Michael Penkov
I can confirm that this still exists bug on 12.04 LTS. I edited
/etc/default/grub, added GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=text, then ran 'sudo
update-grub' to work-around the issue for now.

Some more information:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/248986/ubuntu-12-04-lts-no-longer-able-
to-boot-normally

Most importantly, this problem doesn't occur with an older kernel
(3.2.0-29-generic and below).

[Bug 685611] Re: [Natty] Booting fails because of GRUB setting set gfxpayload=$linux_gfx_mode

2011-07-03 Thread steve davis
Just like mrg666 I have this problem on my Dell 500m.

The laptop boots to B/W screen with the final message: fb: conflicting
fb hw usage inteldrmfb vs EFI VGA - removing generic driver. Pressing
the power button then gives me the nice UBUNTU dots screen just as its
shutting down.

By deleting the set gfxpayload=$linux_gfx_mode line in grub I can boot
normally, but I haven't found a permanent fix in /etc/default/grub.

I can confirm this bug too. Latest Natty on HP Envy 17 2090nr. Also the
setting GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=text doesn't help booting, I have to
completely removed the set line to boot.

[Bug 685611] Re: [Natty] Booting fails because of GRUB setting set gfxpayload=$linux_gfx_mode

2011-06-29 Thread Anorion
I can confirm this bug, latest Natty packages on a Dell Inspiron 8600.
In addition, the text mode is corrupted and reversed (O_o) in addition
to not allowing X to start. I've done a lot of searching by forcing a
framebuffer mode for textmode, and can only come down to the set
gfxpayload... line in grub. I have no idea how to fix it, but I thought
I'd chime in...

2011-01-18 Thread drs305
It is still an issue for me. Unfotunately apport seems to be broken on
my machine.

I too get the black screen unless I remove the set
gfxpayload=$linux_gfx_mode line. I haven't tried using text.

I have found that, while on the 'black' screen, pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL
twice and then ENTER will reboot the system, as it calls up the
rebooting options and defaults to Restart (even though I can't see it).

[Bug 685611] Re: [Natty] Booting fails because of GRUB setting set gfxpayload=$linux_gfx_mode

2011-01-13 Thread Jeremy Foshee
Hi FriedChicken,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it
recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the
latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal
(Applications-Accessories-Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach
updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 685611

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be
great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.
Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the
upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be
done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the
bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.
Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 685611] Re: [Natty] Booting fails because of GRUB setting set gfxpayload=$linux_gfx_mode

2010-12-08 Thread Colin Watson
We're deliberately exposing kernel problems early in the Natty cycle
here in order that there's some hope of them being fixed in time for
release. Reassigning to linux.

(I think you're on the wrong track regarding variable replacements.
$linux_gfx_mode is almost certainly expanded to keep. If you want to
override this in order to get your system working more conveniently,
then edit /etc/default/grub and add GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=text, then run
'sudo update-grub' - but this will disable smooth boot visuals we're
working on so we don't want to make this the default if we can get the
kernel side fixed instead.)

In the current kernel this seems to be solved (although the spalsh
screen does'nt seem to have full resolution).

In case you still need the information I've collected it via apport.
Else I guess this bug can be marked as fixed.
