[Bug 986831] Re: system freezes for some seconds: Attempted to yield the CPU while in atomic or interrupt context

2013-11-07 Thread David Anderson
Recently upgraded to 13.10. Replaced Nvidia 560TI with new GTX 760 SC.
Replaced power supply.
x86_64. driver 319.32

Get the message after a few hours running boinc/seti calculations. system
continues running
and calculating, only a reboot restores the monitor from being blank to showing
something.
turning off boinc/seti calculations to see if that changes the situation.

2013-10-24 Thread M. van Workum
Still happened although less frequent, recently upgraded to 13.10 with nVidia
331.13 and it started to happen again in the same frequency as from the
beginning.
Will contact Dell now since after some investigation this laptop seems to be
prone to GPU failure and since non of my other PC's, who all have nVidia
hardware, are affected, it has to be a hardware issue.

2013-09-24 Thread M. van Workum
I agree with Joris V. they are starting to loose there reason for existence.
Please don't try to be what you despised in the first place!
Sadly I guess closing bug 1 unfortunately does reflect this new strategy...

But on the brighter side of things.
After investigating going to Debian I noticed after a couple of updates in the
13.10 beta, using the nVidia 325.15 driver, I haven't encountered this issues
in a couple weeks now! Being cautiously optimistic! :)

[Bug 986831] Re: system freezes for some seconds: Attempted to yield the CPU while in atomic or interrupt context

2013-09-15 Thread John Murray
This occurs for me pretty much whenever I leave for awhile, come back, and
within first 30 seconds of returning (starting to use my computer again), X
will freeze. Only way to get out of it that I have found is using Alt + SysRq +
REISUB. Checking syslog after it boots again, I always have NVRM: os_schedule:
Attempted to yield the CPU while in atomic or interrupt context.
I very recently upgraded from a GTX 560 Ti to a GTX 770, and that's when this
started happening. I never had this issue with my GTX 560 Ti. However, I do
remember having this problem on the first gen aluminum iMac, with a 9800 I
believe. I could never use the Nvidia drivers on it because of this, though the
Nouveau drivers worked fine.

Current setup:
Linux 3.10
Ubuntu 13.10
GTX 770
Version 325.15 of the Nvidia drivers

just create a new report and all will be fine! yeah...

are neglecting their core business at the moment.

[Bug 986831] Re: system freezes for some seconds: Attempted to yield the CPU while in atomic or interrupt context

2013-08-23 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Michael Mess, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development
release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications-Accessories-Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux replace-with-bug-number

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional
upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily folder,
but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel,
please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is
fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11-rc5

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next
to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please
remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

** Tags added: latest-bios-1201 needs-upstream-testing

** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu)
   Status: Confirmed = Incomplete

@M. van Workum: This is getting to a point which makes my computer
unusable.

I know the feeling. Got similar instability problems with Ubuntu ever
since 12.04, rendering the computer unusable.

12.10 and 13.04 did not fix it.

Tried to escalate within Canonical on a few occasions, but all they said
was repro steps are too vague. While they were right, these are not
bugs to defer, since I was far from the only one.

Quite happy with Debian 7.1 now. Rock-solid, like I remember Ubuntu
being before 12.04. I don't think I will easily come back here.

[Bug 986831] Re: system freezes for some seconds: Attempted to yield the CPU while in atomic or interrupt context

2013-07-25 Thread Joshua Anhalt
lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS

cat /proc/version_signature
Ubuntu 3.2.0-49.75-generic-pae 3.2.46

32-bit mode

GPU:Nvidia Quadro 4000M, nvidia-current 304.88-0ubuntu0.0.2

In addition to the above mentioned NVRM: Xid ... and NVRM:
os_schedule:... messages, the following extra message had been
appearing in dmesg, and syslog. Unfortunately, I don't see these
messages in any of the other user's posted dmesgs, so my version of
these symptoms, and current fix may be unrelated.

--- begin dmesg snippet
NVRM: Your system is not currently configured to drive a VGA console
NVRM: on the primary VGA device. The NVIDIA Linux graphics driver
NVRM: requires the use of a text-mode VGA console. Use of other console
NVRM: drivers including, but not limited to, vesafb, may result in
NVRM: corruption and stability problems, and is not supported.
--- end dmesg

So I decided to make sure that vesafb (and any fb stuff done by grub)
were fully deactivated.

I added blacklist vesafb to a modprobe config file, should work by
placing in /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-blacklist.conf. The problems
persisted, so I added GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=text to /etc/default/grub,
ran update-grub, then rebooted.

Now the NVRM: Xid ... and NVRM: os_schedule:... messages have
stopped, and the machine has run reliably for over a week. (The video
would become corrupt, and machine would eventually hang once a day.)

Of course your mileage may vary.

[Bug 986831] Re: system freezes for some seconds: Attempted to yield the CPU while in atomic or interrupt context

2013-07-24 Thread M. van Workum
@Rocko:
This could be the case, but it never happened to me before 12.10.
I'm using a Quadro FX 3800M and tried drivers 304.*, 310.*, 313.* and 319.* in
12.10 and 13.04 and this error happens quite frequently.
I did notice something that might be of interest. I'm using this laptop (Dell
precision M6500) mostly in a docking station with 2 monitors attached. The
other day I was working on it without the docking station (just the laptop
screen) and it didn't happen at all in that session. Makes me wonder.
Another footnote is flash, this seems to trigger the behavior as well.

[Bug 986831] Re: system freezes for some seconds: Attempted to yield the CPU while in atomic or interrupt context

2013-06-24 Thread Rocko
@2nv2u: fwiw, I suspect my Xid errors and crashes were being caused by
poor quality nVidia hardware. I think the frequency of the errors did
drop with later nvidia drivers, but I didn't stop getting them
altogether until I tried a BIOS that reduced the voltage for 3d
operations to the nvidia card (this is apparently a common problem with
my nvidia 540M hardware when it's under stress). Having said that, I ran
into the errors when I was running intensive 3d gaming applications, and
it sounds like you are having problems with normal 2d operations, which
shouldn't stress the card at all.

Locking up again, this time running an OpenGL application, desktop did
not recover, did manage to get to tty1 and after login the music still
plays but returning to tty7 was not possible (black screen and music
stopped, switching back took some time, almost unresponsive), restarted

This often happens when playing video with the flash plugin.
It may happen more likey when opening more browser tabs and playing video.

Did nvidia 304.37 fix this issue, as it seems to have done for some
people in bug #973096? Unfortunately it doesn't fix my nvidia card from
crashing when I use it to play 3d games under wine via bumblebee.

[Bug 986831] Re: system freezes for some seconds: Attempted to yield the CPU while in atomic or interrupt context

2012-08-11 Thread Michael Mess
Today it hit me again when I was switching user.

I was logged in as one user, then pressed CTRL-ALT-L to lock the screen and
then switch user.
After logging in as second user everything was OK.
Then I switched back to the first user and then back to the second user and the
system was hanging for some time.
Also screen was garbled much, thus it is likely to be an nvidia-bug: See also
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers/+bug/1025693

Or is there anybody who is suffering from this without having an nvidia
card? Then please leave a comment.

[Bug 986831] Re: system freezes for some seconds: Attempted to yield the CPU while in atomic or interrupt context

2012-08-11 Thread Michael Mess
After installing the current updates, I have enabled tracing and tried to
reproduce the issue.
And the problem still exists.

I was able to reproduce the issue by switching users, this time the X11 system
got completely unusable (hanging) and there also was a Segfault in compiz.
After switching users, the newly logged in second user just got a hanging
session where the panels and background were drawn incompletely and it was
hanging, while it was only possible to move the mouse.
It was neither possible to interact with the session nor to switch users nor
switch to a text console.

Fortunately I was able to login via ssh to save the tracing and then
reboot.

When beeing logged in remotely I also vainly tried to regain access to

2012-06-15 Thread Michael Mess
Thanks for the link.
Unfortunately I don't have a way to reproduce this bug, it just comes suddenly,
but in the last time it seems that this issue didn't hit me again, maybe this
has been fixed with one of the last kernel updates, maybe I didn't see it,
because I didn't spend much time in front of the PC, most times I was using it
remotely, maybe it could also be an issue with the nvidia driver?
Maybe it will hit me again, when I spend more time in front of the PC, then I
will attach the logs.

2012-04-23 Thread Joseph Salisbury
These bugs occur typically in an interrupt context. Do you have a way to
reproduce this bug? If so, there is a wiki page[0] that provides some
information on gathering more data specific to these type of bugs. If
possible can you review the wiki page and gather the additional data
listed on that page?
