[Bug 986831] Re: system freezes for some seconds: Attempted to yield the CPU while in atomic or interrupt context

Still happened although less frequent, recently upgraded to 13.10 with nVidia 331.13 and it started to happen again in the same frequency as from the beginning. Will contact Dell now since after some investigation this laptop seems to be prone to GPU failure and since non of my other PC's, who all have nVidia hardware, are affected, it has to be a hardware issue. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/986831 Title: system freezes for some seconds: Attempted to yield the CPU while in atomic or interrupt context To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/986831/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I agree with Joris V. they are starting to loose there reason for existence. Please don't try to be what you despised in the first place! Sadly I guess closing bug 1 unfortunately does reflect this new strategy... But on the brighter side of things. [Bug 986831] Re: system freezes for some seconds: Attempted to yield the CPU while in atomic or interrupt context
This occurs for me pretty much whenever I leave for awhile, come back, and within first 30 seconds of returning (starting to use my computer again), X will freeze. Only way to get out of it that I have found is using Alt + SysRq + REISUB. Checking syslog after it boots again, I always have NVRM: os_schedule: Attempted to yield the CPU while in atomic or interrupt context. I very recently upgraded from a GTX 560 Ti to a GTX 770, and that's when this started happening. I never had this issue with my GTX 560 Ti. However, I do remember having this problem on the first gen aluminum iMac, with a 9800 I believe. I could never use the Nvidia drivers on it because of this, though the Nouveau drivers worked fine. [Bug 986831] Re: system freezes for some seconds: Attempted to yield the CPU while in atomic or interrupt context
Michael Mess, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report: apport-collect -p linux replace-with-bug-number Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags: kernel-fixed-upstream kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example: kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11-rc5 This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag: needs-upstream-testing If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags: kernel-bug-exists-upstream kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER As well, please remove the tag: needs-upstream-testing Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. [Bug 986831] Re: system freezes for some seconds: Attempted to yield the CPU while in atomic or interrupt context
@2nv2u: fwiw, I suspect my Xid errors and crashes were being caused by poor quality nVidia hardware. I think the frequency of the errors did drop with later nvidia drivers, but I didn't stop getting them altogether until I tried a BIOS that reduced the voltage for 3d operations to the nvidia card (this is apparently a common problem with my nvidia 540M hardware when it's under stress). Having said that, I ran into the errors when I was running intensive 3d gaming applications, and it sounds like you are having problems with normal 2d operations, which shouldn't stress the card at all.

[Bug 986831] Re: system freezes for some seconds: Attempted to yield the CPU while in atomic or interrupt context
Today it hit me again when I was switching user. I was logged in as one user, then pressed CTRL-ALT-L to lock the screen and then switch user. After logging in as second user everything was OK. Then I switched back to the first user and then back to the second user and the system was hanging for some time. [Bug 986831] Re: system freezes for some seconds: Attempted to yield the CPU while in atomic or interrupt context
After installing the current updates, I have enabled tracing and tried to reproduce the issue. And the problem still exists. I was able to reproduce the issue by switching users, this time the X11 system got completely unusable (hanging) and there also was a Segfault in compiz. After switching users, the newly logged in second user just got a hanging session where the panels and background were drawn incompletely and it was hanging, while it was only possible to move the mouse. It was neither possible to interact with the session nor to switch users nor switch to a text console. Fortunately I was able to login via ssh to save the tracing and then reboot. ** Attachment added: DebuggingSchedulingWhileAtomic trace file https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/986831/+attachment/3256731/+files/hang-bug-trace.bz2 ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/986831 Title: system freezes for some seconds: Attempted to yield the CPU while in atomic or interrupt context To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/986831/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately I don't have a way to reproduce this bug, it just comes suddenly, but in the last time it seems that this issue didn't hit me again, maybe this has been fixed with one of the last kernel updates, maybe I didn't see it, because I didn't spend much time in front of the PC, most times I was using it remotely, maybe it could also be an issue with the nvidia driver? These bugs occur typically in an interrupt context. Do you have a way to reproduce this bug? If so, there is a wiki page[0] that provides some information on gathering more data specific to these type of bugs. If possible can you review the wiki page and gather the additional data listed on that page?
