unfortunatelly, i have deleted the old xorg logs, and the current log is clean,
sinc i'm now using vesa driver to make the computer work at all, and therefore
xorg.conf is basically a copy of the corg.conf.failsafe, uninteresting i think.
i'll revert the xorg.conf to the default and do a reboot

since then i'm on 9.10, still the same old problem.
see screenshot: everything is set to opaque (including opacity of windows
during move), and most of these settings still don't work... screenshot shows
the settings window dragged around, and it gets transparent, despite
another screenshot of the xfce menu, it is transparent too...
i can't believe no-one can reproduce and confirm this, as i *always* get

i have this empty users groups list too, on a reinstalled 8.04.4. (it was
working before, with 8.04, which i used for years until i gave the 10.04
upgrade a try... :) hence the reinstall...)
i have added users and groups manually with adduser and other commands (also
with webmin). the
i have forgotten to mention, that adding users didn't f##k up the system
in any way. it's just the gui app not showing anything.
and i already found out why was that in my case (i wish if all things could be
fixed this fast! :)
in my case, my Real Name contained national characters, which showed

What I experience is: open synaptic, filter the list by status (ie.
