Timo, yes you are right about that.
Lucid main repo lags behind now.
Still, if I wait for the official repos to be updated and either not upgrade to

Like I wrote the Nvidia PPA contains stable 190.42 drivers, that do work.

6.073813] EDAC amd64: WARNING:
Bug still here, I wonder is it going to be looked at during the Karmic
development life cycle.
Funny that if I untick the Update-Notifier in the Startup Applications, I do
not get the visual kernel crash report, but the I can found the kernel crash
log in the /var/crash directory.
** Changed
I do not think this is a correct warning will no ill effects.
Why does it say: Your system might become unstable now and might need to be
restarted.
I can also find a new kernel crash report in the directory /var/crash/ each
time after a new boot.
By the way this is a duplicate of a bug 422536.
Mike, I do have a NVidia video card, but please note that I did also try
booting without restricted NVidia drivers, using only the community nv-driver
and the problem did not go away. So I do not think it is a dkms issue.
But reinstalling all kernel packages did fix it for me. Also the warnings
Though this no way solves this issue it looks very good.
I have always wondered why is there 3 different backgrounds:
1. xsplash
2. gdm
3. xsplash again
4. x (desktop)
It looks way better if only one background is used (at least in case of a
single user setup).
I changed the backgrounds of
So it is suggested to change the path: /usr/sbin/kdm into /usr/bin/kdm.
My question is now, is there a file named kdm in the /usr/bin directory?
There is, however, the file kdm in the directory /usr/sbin.
At least in gnome the file named gdm cannot be found in the directory /usr/bin.
Using false
OK Christian, so there is a difference between kdm and gdm setups.
I did check this from both of my PC's (32-bit Karmic Ubuntu and 64-bit Karmic
Ubuntu).
These both have the file gdm only in the directory /urs/sbin, not in
usr/bin.
Both of these PC:s are updated from the main server. Just

I do not think that changing only the background of gdm can fix this issue.
Gdm is still in the middle of two xplash operations and repeatedly flashing the
background does not look so nice.
One possible solution could be to have both xsplash and gdm use the same
background.
Why
Sound theme sets one of the four alert sounds (bask, drip, glass or sonar). It
does not change the system-ready sound.
One of the many workarounds to your wish is to go to (with root priviledge) the
directory /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo and change the name of the file

Hi der_vegi,
have you tried to reinstall all the kernel packages (2.6.31-11).
For me that fixed the problem completely.

Actually I have always wondered why a total of 3 different backgrounds is

Well as of today the new gdm 2.28.0-0ubuntu7 fixes this issue.
The x-splash background is used.
