Something that will delete all extraneous cache and log files that buildup
after a while of usage. Something like CCleaner in Windows. I know Linux
does not collect too much extraneous data, but i am sure there is a lot that
can be cleaned to clear up space on a space constrained drive/partition.

Yea, you are right.

/sudo apt-get clean/

Also now and then you can run *Computer Janitor* program under *System

Any ideas where this buildup happens and how to safely clean/clear it?

Sending this mail on an Ubuntu list you should get that the answer would
be Ubuntu. Same with Fedora and openSUSE. :)
But still there are people who have voted for other distros.

Some kind of making traffic to the website I guess. Should we allow such

If you want to connect to mobile for some reason, I don't know for sure

Basically i would like to start a sms based news / alert service.

Second question which is OT - what kind of mobile phones have this

Most modern mobile os have very good capabilities.
Symbian, Android, IOS. Also one has choices over programming languages

would appreciate responses

However a note - this is not to find out how to start up a mobile spam

I really appreciate your idea.

As others mentioned Testdisk/Photorec are great. Problem with Photorec

can save time digging into. I recovered 65000 files from 4GB ubuntu hdd

Testdisk -- Scan and repair partitions
Photorec -- recover lost files from partitions

Also try Foremost, which is also a very good tool.

so my questions are

1. How do i verify what is wrong with the disk (what diagnostics software)

I don't know answer for this

2. what is the best way to recover the data
test disk ?? is there any thing else

With my experience, testdisk is the best tool for partition recovery.
If you have some important files to recover and you failed to recover
partitions, then try photorec/foremost.

You need to configure you mail server properly for that to work. You
can try lampp or some such software which comes with mail server.
Or follow some how-to like http://dimmeria.com/?q=node/1

Engineering courses in most of universities I am aware of don't even
talk about any industry related tools. ex. build tools like make and
ant, protocols like ssh and vnc etc. So open source and linux don't
 even exist for them.

But this doesn't mean that we can't do it. Doing this on personal
basis will be a good start. For example those of us who are working in
industry already can design courses about various tools and conduct
them in their colleges ans and when possible.

Sorry. Forcing doesn't work. It will be studied as any other subject
and in most cases will end up being taught the wrong way, given the
quality of majority teachers who teach at Universities nowadays.

I am using the Inspiron 1525 - I'm really happy with it, although its
overheated a few times and ACPI has shutdown on me - but that is also
because I was over-stressing the poor baby a bit ..

XPS M1330 is a very good buy. Do you get those pre-loaded with Ubuntu in
  India?

Unfortunately, I dont believe you get them pre-loaded with Ubuntu in
 India.
I assumed that since they sold the model with Ubuntu abroad, everything
would work flawlessly out of the box with ubuntu. While this was true for
most things, I remember there being some problems with sound, etc.
Basically, Dell has its own release of Ubuntu with some of its
 proprietary
drivers packaged in and it was available only as a DVD which meant a
 2-week
download, etc... it is nicer if you can get it from abroad with ubuntu
pre-loaded, should save some bucks as well.. (although you wont get the
pleasure that I did of formatting the Vista drive and ripping off the
  sticker... :) )

If I remember correctly, the sound problems were on Intel HDA cards
due to old alsa. Hence Dell backported new alsa drivers.

The only proprietary part in Dell OEM installation of Ubuntu is the
DVD player. Rest it is stock Ubuntu Hardy now.

By the way, in case you are getting it from US, you may also want to

XPS M1330 is a very good buy. Do you get those pre-loaded with Ubuntu in

By the way, in case you are getting it from US, you may also want to
take a look at system76 [1]. They have been providing machines with

Once I called Airtel Broadband Customer care, and asked, wht is the Gateway

I am sure in your life time you will see 50 such more distros. It is

It is also hard for some people to understand why some packages are

 provide full multimedia experience.
It is like overspeeding on road, breaking all the signals and then
claiming that you can reach certain distance in half the time compared

I will admit thats a fair and to some extent a correct assessment.
But I hope I keep seeing more Distros. It's this freedom of creating

The more people fork out, the better are the chances that another Ubuntu

At that time Dell was selling laptops online only but now they are in

If you are getting one from the US be sure to buy a global warranty so
that in case of needing service you can have it done locally and not
send it back to the US. I can have mine serviced in the Asia_pacific

is NO. Ubuntu MID is for x84 architecture only as of now.

x84 architecture ? Is that the architecture of the Samsung Ultra Q1 which

You can use AptonCD which creates an ISO image with all the deb files so
that any later time you can use AptonCD to put back the deb files so that no
need to download files, this will be a kind of repository of only your
required packages.

  2. Can i make a copy / back up so that if i want to redo my machine i

Same answer as above

You can also setup apt-proxy, so when one PC updates, the others can
 then update from that PC.
  3. Amusing synaptic to download these updates / upgrades - so where
would these updated files be stored can i just copy individual files
  from there.

/var/cache/apt/archives --all fully downloaded packages
/var/cache/apt/archives/partial -- all partially downloaded packages

This from now on should be called linkblasting. You are not helping,
so much as scaring the guy. I'm also worried that you're wasting your
own time. I'm sure you could have chosen one proper solution, if you
 knew the solution at all.

Perhaps you should be asking for his lspci or something,
since I know that at least two of links above are useless, because
 they don't use B43 series, and that's Ankur's chipset.

Ankur came on the list after I failed to get his wifi working in our
 workshop.
And trust me, we saw a lot of links. Not everyone is an Ubuntu expert,
 we're new users.

 We need clarity, not confusion.

Most of the update managers will keep updates of kernels like in ubuntu(as

If fedora is using same major versions, of all applications you are
using, as Ubuntu then I feel you should have ideally no problems with
 configuration.

Here's what I suggest. You already have Ubuntu installed I believe.
Backup your /home on an external drive (pen drive or external HDD).
Make enough space on your internal HDD and then install Fedora,
allowing it to format your /home if it wants to. At the end, boot
Fedora once and then copy your backup of /home from the external
drive back to your internal HDD. Perhaps that will delete some config
  files but this might work.

On the contrary he should keep the existing data on /home partition
and use it as it is. That way there is at least some chance that it
 will work.
Also the first user created in Fedora will need same user name as in
Ubuntu. Otherwise it will simply use different home directory
 (/home/username).

I used dd command to copy the entire partition

Ubuntu server is not any special operating system. It just includes

Yup correct. Download is better option. I suggest go for torrent
downloads because those are somewhat reliable.
Moreover I suggest checking out LinuxMint (http://www.linuxmint.com)
if you want to save yourself the trouble of installing multi media
codecs, flash, Java etc(which most, if not all, of us install anyway).

I love the theme and other things in linuxmint but the taste of ubuntu is
different.
Ubuntu rocks big time.

Webcam and 16x dvd-rw memory card reader.. Works really fine with me..

and why are you specific on AMD?

Again, if you are not specific on AMD, my Dell XPS M1530 has out of the box
support for almost everything. The only thing I had to work for is the
 finger-print reader.

Dell XPS M1530 comes with ubuntu out of box now in US, so i think
finger-print reader should also not be an issue.

 Thanks,
 Raseel

I don't suppose that will happen if I were to wait for the official

Some windows apps dont work after installing on linux from wine like
utorrent. and also they wont get uninstalled, if you want to remove them
completly (i do this way) right click on menu bar, select edit menus and
remove from wine. then go to home folder press control+H follow path
.wine/drive_c/Program Files delete those who wanted.

Just plug in your modem, and try sudo wvdialconf from the terminal. Once
it sets up the modem, just do sudo wvdial everytime. Hope this helps.

I will give a try, thanks a lot, can you explain what it does? if you dont
mind.

If my understanding is right, wvdialconf searches for the modem in all
possible ports, and detects maximum possible baud etc and saves the settings
 in /etc/wvdial.conf file.

You have to edit that file and enter your dialup phone number (such as
172226 for bsnl or #777 for reliance cdma), username etc. wvdial ofcourse
dials out (using settings from wvdial.conf), initiates a ppp session and
establishes a default route in the routing table. there may be better ways
to achieve this using the network manage applet, but this is the way I know
 that works for sure.

 Mani.

It worked but partial success, when i type sudo wvdial it will search for
everything and says no tone, disconnecting.
I gave prone number 08040X6, is this the one, or u gave some 6 digits
for bsnl, what is it?

There are lots of p2p protocols. Is Ares a bittorrent client? If yes
then there is one client sitting right there in the menus.
 Applications - Internet - Transmission.

Use Synaptic Package Manager and install package unrar. Then you

080 is STD code of Hyderabad IIRC. I am not sure why one would need to
 add STD code while dialing.

080 is bangalore, without code you cannot identify any phone number in world

Here's more info about Mallikarjun's problem:
 1. He has a Dell XPS M1530 laptop
 2. He is using Hardy Heron
 3. He has an Airtel Broadband connection!
 4. And I think he is trying to connect the wires to his internal 56K
 Conexant RD02 modem.

Mallikarjun: First of all, I think you should take help from Airtel people.
Secondly, you are using the wrong modem. They should have given you an
external ADSL modem, which you should connect to your laptop using an
ethernet cable (you can also use a USB cable, but it will be a little
slower). Ethernet connection is simpler to configure (no drivers reqd) and
it is faster than a USB connection.

They have given modem and it works, but i got RD02 with laptop so wanted to
give a try. also 2 systems cant be used at a time so
anyways thanks to all.

 I hope this helps!

 you considered
 1) Whether you have enough bandwidth
 2) If your network speed is fast enough
 3) You have adequate security in place
 4) WIll your PC and net be up 24/7

No, Your desired DNS name should point to your IP address, that is the
correct setup. So, you will have to sign up with dyndns or no-ip,
which will track your IP address and thus update your hostname
registered with them with your current iP. You can point your own
domain as a CNAME to your registered hostname on one of those
services. And to be able to do this, you might need to sign up with
 services like everydns or freedns
In my case, I have home.mehulved.com pointing to my home PC. But, it's
much easier for me since I have a static IP.

which will track your IP address and thus update your hostname
registered with them with your current iP. You can point your own
domain as a CNAME to your registered hostname on one of those
services. And to be able to do this, you might need to sign up with
  services like everydns or freedns
In my case, I have home.mehulved.com pointing to my home PC. But,
 it's
much easier for me since I have a static IP.

Thanks for all the inputs and will give a try..

In dyndns which i tried. it will give mydomain.secondarydomain.com. like
  xyz.homelinux.com, xyz.dyndns.org.
Cant it be like my own registered domain name?

Ok, instead of afraid.org, use dnsexit.com.

 1) Create an account on dnsexit.com

 2) Download domainUpdate perl script from
 http://downloads.dnsexit.com/domainUpdate.zip

http://downloads.dnsexit.com/domainUpdate.zip link not found???

 3) Change these variables in the script

 my $user = 'xxx';
 my $pass = '';
 my $domain = 'mydomain';
 my @network = `ifconfig ppp0`;
 my $ipfile = '/usr/local/src/domainUpdate/last_ip';

 4) Create a symlink in /etc/ppp/ip-up.d to the script. This will ensure,
whenever your pppd reconnects, it runs the script. It is assuming that
you run pppoe from your local machine and your DSL router is in bridge
 mode.

 5) Create DNS entry in dnsexit webGUI for your domain.

 6) Now, call domainUpdate.pl manually and run following command to check
if your IP address has been updated on dnsexit nameservers:

 dig @ns3.dnsexit.com yourdomain.com

 7) Go to the control panel of your domain registrar and change your
 nameservers there to

 ns3.dnsexit.com
 ns4.dnsexit.com
 ns1.dnsexit.com
 ns2.dnsexit.com

 8) Try reconnecting your ppp session and follow step 6 again to verify,
if your script is running properly.

 Nishant

Try dynamic DNS provided by afraid.org
