I have few comments and I need inputs from other page before fixing the page. 1. I have objection to the title 'Fixing Gutsy'. There is nothing wrong with Gutsy. 'Customizing Gutsy' is more appropriate title. 2. I really fail to understand what functionality Adobe Acrobat Reader provides that home users require which is not by provided by Evince (the default PDF reader in Ubuntu). Apart from that it is non-Free software. 3. If you install all gstreamer plugins and w32codecs you can play almost every media file except .rm. Also you can play those files in Firefox since totem-gstreamer-firefox-plugin is installed by default. So I don't know what are you trying to achieve by recommending mozilla-plugin-vlc. 4. I haven't yet felt the need to run a Windows application. So at least I don't see a need to recommend wine. It defeats the purpose of using a Free operating system. 5. Now the most important. Your page is IMHO just a variation of http://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats targeting a specific version of Ubuntu. We already have loads of guides about how to play restricted formats. What we need are the guides to achieve some other specific tasks. I hope you will take this as constructive criticism. Onkar -- Passion - Some people climb mountains - others write Free software. I am not including your mail as I don't know answers to all the things. I will just give some tips. 1. There is a package called grub-splashimages in repositories. Install it. Then in /boot/grub create a symbolic link to one of the images. sudo ln -s splashimages/fiesta.xpm.gz splash.xpm.gz Then update grub. sudo update-grub See if this works. 2. I am not sure what you mean by 3 coulous image. What I usually do is open image in gimp and select menu Image -> Mode -> Indexed, put 16 as number of colours and then save modified image as xpm file. Which webcam is it? What are you exactly trying to do with webcam? Do you have more than one video/V4L devices (ex a TV tuner card)? Try running following command (without quotes) and tell us if it works. 'gst-launch-0.10 v4l2src device=/dev/video1 ! video/x-raw-yuv,width=640,height=480 ! ffmpegcolorspace ! ximagesink' Also try replacing v4l2src with v4lsrc if above command does not work for you. This will help us to know which driver supports your webcam. There is another tool which can be launched with command 'gstreamer-properties' where you can test your video sources. Hope this helps. Biswajit, While you present a valid concern in reality it is not a problem. I have personally printed many pages i.e websites stored in PDF form, from the printers in netcafe. And yes they open perfectly fine in Adobe reader. The PDF printer is exactly what the name suggests. It saves files in PDF format, not as postscript. I would like 'Ubuntu QA' not being blamed for following reasons 1. Ubuntu QA is not a well defined team. It includes almost anyone who does packaging, bug reporting/triaging/fixing and anyone who uses/tests Ubuntu. So when you say 'Ubuntu QA', it sounds like everyone is to be blamed. 2. People do make mistakes, It happens in all distros. Of course if there is/are a single person or group of persons who keep making mistakes, being careless then a platform is available to raise voice against it. 3. More often than not the hardware problems that come in the form of regressions are side effects of supposedly harmless change or security/bug fix that someone did. 4. It is my firm belief that all of the core developers in Ubuntu who have power to crash your systems through the way of broken packages, take very much care not to let it happen. But it is many times not possible to test all the scenarios which might introduce regressions. I think it is in best interest of Ubuntu in particular, free software in general that when you encounter such problem you report a bug and provide as much information as possible. We are not sure if the problem is faced here (related to DVD) is by everyone or just few users who have specific hardware. Yes, hardware is constant on your machine. But it is variable between your machine and package maintainers machine. So even if it is broken for you, it may not be for him. > > 4. No. I am not trying to justify the regressions. I remember some bugs in launchpad where people were not able to boot their hardy installations when they were having some specific type of hard drives. The problem was that some old driver got disabled in favor of new driver and it was causing unbootable machines for a small percentage of users. So I believe that issues like this which are related to hardware are most of the times corner cases. And i specifically wanted to present objection to the sentence 'Ubuntu QA is culprit'. I hope I have properly explained what I wanted to say. Onkar -- Passion - Some people climb mountains - others write Free software. Re: [ubuntu-in] OT - Multiple Booting of GNU/LInux OS's
You can see which partition on each disk is marked as bootable from the fdisk outout i.e. the one with '*'. 1. When you say (hd0,1) it means 1st partition on 0th hard disk. So in your case you will have to specify (hd1,1). 2. You can see that root partition of your installation is specified with UUID. UUID is a unique identifier for every hard disk partition in your system. I am not sure if partitions on a USB disk will have same UUID everytime you boot. But if it is the case then you can boot into Ubuntu and find UUID for all partitions with command 'ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid/'. 3. It is possible to dynamically specify kernel, initrd, and root in grub instead of trial and error on menu.lst. When you see grub menu of Ubuntu, press 'c' key. It will give you a command prompt. You can then give commands root, kernel and initrd. After that give command 'boot'. Ifthe parameter you have provided are correct it will boot in Mandriva. If now you can reboot machine by Ctrl + Alt + Del and try again. This way you won't have to boot in Ubuntu everytime. Once you have found correct values add those to your menu.lst Hope this helps. But if you are talking about hardware compatibility then following links might be useful. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBook https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookPro > also interested in why one should / should not buy a a macbook and run > gnu/linux on it, Macbook is highly portable because of the small screen size (approx 13.3"). And this is very useful when you have to carry it as against the other laptops these days with 17" screen where you need to carry separate bags. Also apple machines always come packed with latest technologies. For ex. they started shipping graphics cards with DVI output interface long time before other vendors. Macbook seems to be favorite among FOSS developers. Check photos from UDS on planet Ubuntu you will know what I mean. As for disadvantage they are overpriced in my opinion. And if you plan to run on linux you will have some binary only driver, mostly graphics card but you may need for wireless too. Hope this helps. Sound Juicer retrieves track details from online databases such as Musicbrainz, provided the details are available for your CD. You will need to be online for retrieval to work. Musicbrainz is community managed database, anyone can register and add details for the CD. There is some menu item in sound juicer which will let you add details yourself. As far as I remember, the bug is specific to some hard disk and not all. IIRC, the problem is that Ubuntu keeps waking up the hard disk every few seconds (or milli seconds perhaps) which causes more wear and tear than usual. I think winamp and windows media player have facility to retrieve details from servers. Look for something called CDDB in preferences. AFAIK, every album cd has a unique identifier. The data is tored in database against this identifier. So sound juicer just uses this id to retrieve details. Thank you in advance. Ubuntu does not use partitions names anymore (from feisty if I remember correctly). It uses UUID which is unique to every partition. So unless you are messing up with the partitions used by Ubuntu itself, these UUID will not change by and other changes to partition table. You can check entries in /etc/fstab to verify it has UUID for every partition. Also you can find UUID for each partition with command 'ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid/' Please note that once you change your windows partitions their UUID won't be same anymore. So they will not get mounted on Ubuntu. You have to modify fstab entries appropriately. There is good support for NTFS with help of ntfg-3g in all recent distributions. So NTFS works out of box. But i was > just testing something out so thats ok.. > OpenID is not supposed to work this way. The site which supports openid authentication never asks password. The way it works is like this. Let's see you need to login to ubuntu-in.org using openif provided by launchpad. 1. In the login box on ubuntu-in.org, you enter your launchpad openid. 2. You are redirected to launchpad. 3. If there is no existing session with launchpad, step 4 is executed else step 5 is executed. 4. Launchpad asks you for your username and password. 5. Launchpad asks whether you want ubuntu-in.org to identify you through launchpad. You also have options like only once or always. 6. Launchpad sends confirmation to ubuntu-in.org that you have been authenticated. 7. ubuntu-in.org creates a session for you. So no where in the process ubuntu-in.org asks you the password. Hope this helps. Onkar -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in
