Hi!

For the record i have transfered ownership of the US-core team to
eeickmeyer (https://launchpad.net/~ubuntustudio-core)

Sorry it took so long. I don't have any good explanation for it: i just
kept forgetting.

I hope this hasn't caused any troubles or delays.

I put my subscription to automagically be canceled on may 31st in order
to give some time in case something would have gone wrong and avoid
ending up locking us out. Pretty sure everything is fine though.

Regardless how short of time i managed to dedicate to the project, and
the fact that i wasn't able to be involved for as long as i had
committed, which i am very sorry for, It's been a honor to work with
each and everyone of you. I will stay in the PR team and maybe
documentation... Either-way i will probably pop up here and there to
cheer and help when i can.

[ubuntu-studio-devel] New Owner for ubuntustudio-core team

Hi List,

As you've probably noticed, I'm not contributing anymore. Luckily, there
are still motivated members left and lately it looks like their number
is growing. Something I'd like to thank the remaining members and the
new coming ones for!

I just don't seem to find the time/energy to write an official step-down
thing, and i probably wont for some time ahead. However, I'm taking this
moment to write an official "step-up" thing: someone needs to have the
ownership of the ubuntustudio-core team, I think the best suited
contributor currently for this is Erich Meyer. Therefor, unless someone
argues against it with a solid reason, i will make him owner of the
ubuntsutdio-core team.

I approve of this.

I'd add myself to the list, but i'm not in a position to make such
commitments. I'll do my best to add when- and wherever i can be useful
according to the agenda the committee agrees upon.

Everyone. (including me)

This said, Ralf you are _not_ helping here. You're welcome to assist new
users, but as long as you keep grinding that tone: you are *not*
helping. We know you know your stuff. Cool! If you want to participate
with development: be considerate. Otherwise, hands off the devel-list.

I will however ask /everyone/ to stick to that too: reacting to
whomever's clumsy (if not intentional) ways, is _not_ helping. There
will always be someone to nurture the negativity. Don't give them the
space for it.

I am afraid i am currently not equipped with the mental health necessary
to moderate the discussion in any other constructive way the this. I
don't ask you to understand but this means if you want things to happen,
you are going to have to moderate yourselves.

Second of all, I've been told there is no need for signing the CoC. It
was the first thing i was asked, and i adhere to it. I think it is a
good way to signal that you have at least read it and agree with it. But
as it seems, is not necessary. I apologize if that wasted your time, and
I know your time is precious, believe me.

I'd like to add that there are many good reasons, as you mention, to
want to allow users to sign the CoC directly from launchpad, but
removing the manual steps would also potentially open for easier
automation of that process to spam-bots.

I have had a long and unresolved internal struggle about the dilemma of
making things easier at the cost of leveling things to lowest
denominator. On one hand, i understand that most users don't want to
struggle with computing per-se and rather get on with using the computer
for their production purpose without having to know how the tools work
behind the scene. On the other hand in an ever more digitalized society,
this makes me sad: I'd wish more users would be inclined to take control
over their tools.

I don't know what kind of process is best. But it's a question that
should be asked to ubuntu at large; ubuntustudio alone doesn't have much
say in it.

I understand GPG is cumbersome and a bit hard to wrap one's head around.
This said, so is development. Musicians, Artists, designers etc, are
welcome to help developing, but there is no short cut to it: you need to
learn the tools to do it and they are rarely very artistically
intuitive. However these type of contributors are often more comfortable
with PR, documentation and promotion. That means signing the code is the
most abstract thing they'll have to do.

I'm not saying it's a prefect process, and i agree that beggars can't be
choosers. But it is my opinion that we need some kind of sign of moral
commitment to the project, or we could as well just make everything public.

I hope i make sense.

Perhaps the entire embarking process is a good place to start with the
documentation update?

The call to get together should have been made by the project lead, that
was me, but as it turned out, i simply couldn't.


I do however think that projects that are driven by volunteers needs
someone/someones to take action from the discussions. I know not
everyone have the time, will, or initiative to do so. What I'm trying to
say is that, if you feel you want to set-up a meeting you should feel
free to go ahead and do so by inviting everyone to attend on a given
date in a given chat room. :)

In the past, what we have done for wallpapers are contests where we
invite the community to send propositions to a flickr account and then
we setup votes for the 20 most popular ones.

If you are interested in organizing such a contest, it would be of great
value! :) It tends to invest the users and generate good PR/promotion.

The wiki needs and diserves a lot of work. This would be a great place
to begin contributing. I'll see what i can do to accelerate you getting
edit permission. I would just need you to sign the Code of conduct of

For the part with the bugs, i'm not very good at how it works... I used
to know more, but i've kindof lost it. Hoping someone can fill in for me
here We used to have a contributor with a lot of experience about
it, but who prefers communicating over IRC. If you are familiar with
that communication protocol, try your luck and see if Krytarik is around
in #ubuntustudio-devel. Oven Werks is very good at it too.

I don't know how available they are atm though, and we have to respect
it if they are busy: life is what it is. And everyone involved is doing
it out of pure generosity.

Yes, the social media could need more love. cfhowlet used to do a good
job with it. But his time is also limited. Managing the socialmedia is
very time consuming and requires fairly quick response. And then there
is creating content to have something to post..

However, i can't even begin to describe how much hope i'm feeling from
reading you, Erich and pcmao: if you are willing to donate the necessary
time and energy, you are most welcome! :) For facebook there is no need
for password, i can make you a moderator, or whatever they call it. For
twitter, i need i can make you a team member with twitters
"tweetdeck.twitter.com" Than there is the youtube channel. And i think
the same applies there. So no need for passwords anymore...

I need you both to sign the code of conduct before though.

@Erich: I'm glad to see you are using the GPG key. I wasn't able to
locate your launchpad profile, will you send it to me?

Although spontaneously, i'd like to congratulate you all for the 10th
release of Ubuntu Studio!

You made it without me! <3 As you've all respectfully and silently
been able to observe: i cannot lead this project. And I'm probably not
going to be in a foreseeable future. I'm sorry for that, among other
things.

I have very limited amount of time, but i suppose we'd need to talk
technicalities with permissions in launchpad and such as soon as
possible. Can we meet-up on IRC on the 21st of May? Not sure what time
would be the best, but I will follow up on this thread.

I can't speak much of the state of things or the community, because i
have no idea: My backlog is crumbling, covered in dust and my life
doesn't look like it did 8 months ago. I suppose a big thank-you!! to
those who pulled the work load of 17.04 is in place. I owe you beers,

So it seems from the "17.04 cycle" thread that we are all going to be
busier than we have been the past cycle. Eylul suggested we set-up
regular IRC meeting and i think it is an excellent idea. It would make
our lives easier.

I wish we could have them on a weekly basis, and if I may express a
preference, it would be Sundays evening CET. But i reckon we need to
find a common ground... The only times i can absolutely _not_ is
weekdays (mon-fri) between 2am and 6pm CET.

How about you guys?

Good point. I didn't think to check the impact on the metapackages. I 
will add a task to the bug to remember to take care of that. Hopefully 
we can cover that problem by uploading new metapackages first, but if 
the builds fail for a while early in the release cycle it shouldn't 
matter too much. This happens regularly anyway, when Debian do 
transitions that don't take care of our seeds :-)

I wish i could be a better judge of what to do, but due to my poor
technical understanding i have to leave this up to you and Krytarik. I
can imagine that Krytarik is going to be reluctant to redo the changes
later, because, well... double work, but i also think he should join

so you both can be on the same page regarding what is done and why.

As you probably know, next week is Release Candidate and the week after
is the Final release. I am facing 2 major difficulties in timing:
- My mom is visiting me from Switzerland during RC
- I start working on a new job full-time the day before RC.

On thing just hit me, under "photo" you include "Shotwell", we do not
distribute that anymore, but you could add "RawTherapee" instead and 2
make it 3, add "phatch" :)

I agree that the state of Linux in terms of Music is tougher than
mainstream OS. Since i mainly record hardware electronics, it isn't much
of an issue for me personally. But lately I've grown pretty fond of
qtractor for ITB (In The Box) production with midi controlled Software
synthesizers. I have yet to finish a song to prove my point, but while
it is a little wilder than i remember ITB production from other OS'es,
it actually works :) For video editing i always have to point towards
blender's VSE which has become pretty awesome if one has got the time to
get familiar with its GUI.

I'm not 100% sure, but i think wine isn't distributed because of the
license. However, your idea of creating good instruction on how to set
it up is an excellent one. In fact, we really need help with
documentation. If you have any spare time to share, you are welcome to
join the ubuntustudio-documentation team. Maybe pass by our IRC channel
sometime on freenode #ubuntustudio-devel and say hi?:)

Sorry to read your issues with Thunar. I'm aware there is a problem, but
i haven't yet had to suffer it. *touching wood*. At this point, we don't
really have any plans to move to MATE, but we've had an ambition
floating for long now, to make Ubuntu Studio desktop agnostic. The main
concern in that aspect is that the team is very small ATM. Hence i allow
myself to insist again, that you are welcome to join the team and help
us make things like this become reality. :)

Yes, we can get it from there, but the highlight color is red. I'm fine
with that, but it would be nice if it was blue to fit our color scheme

Yes, (although, i've never seen a link to launchpad like that before..

Jonathan seems to need to set-up a machine first, i hope he will join-in
down the line once he is ready. However, Krytarik and I have been
looking into this the past few days. We gathered the source SVGs from
upstream to facilitate color-customization
https://github.com/numixproject/numix-gtk-theme/issues/508
and successfully made a script to convert the theme's colors and
re-render the required PNGs.

Krytarik asked me to push the custom theme to
lp:ubuntustudio-look/numix-blue-theme so that he could work on the
packaging into our repository. But i am stuck by my fear to mess-up the
ubuntustudio-look branch with my poor bzr skills.

Could you help me Ross?

This is what i have done so far:

- I pulled the branch with:
bzr branch lp:ubuntustudio-look

- I pulled the debian source of numix, and edited is as needed to turn
everything red into blue.

What i am stuck with is really a noob thing: i'm not sure how to push if
i want the theme to be a spearate branch...

i've been told (i think) by Krytarik that i could do:
'bzr push lp:~ubuntustudio-look/numix-theme-blue'
but i am affraid i might have misunderstood Krytarik's instructions and
since he is not available atm i'm asking here. The thing is that i don't
want the 'usr' and 'po' folders from ubuntustudio-look/trunk to be in
ubuntustudio-look/numix-theme-blue...

I hope i'm making sense and that we still have the time frame to do this.

That is a very good idea! We should make a section like that on the new
website. Can you/would you have time to help us formulate the

I have to say, i'm personally very interested in your work and also glad
to learn more about your history in Ubuntu Studio, your investments. The
more i get to know about you, the more i admire you Antoine. If i could
wish something, it would be that i would have gotten to know these
details in a more... positive context.

I don't know much about Ralf contribution to FLOSS at large, but i can
back my claim that despite his harsh tone, he has helped many users
solve their problems. At the end of the day, his contribution on the
user-list is mostely very precious.

I know i might sound out of my league due to that recent flame-thread i
was a partialy responsible of, but if it teached me something it is that
we are not here to rank each others benevolent participation. Please
continue the discussion off-list if you have to and stay kind to each other.

CoF and the woodmark does appear to be different from the official one.

Thank you Thomas for being concerned about the visual-identity and
thoroughly checking the details. However, AFAIK the CoF is ok to use on

required to address social/environmental/ethical issues, i think there
are ways to address these issues that are better than others. My
personal relation to you, Ralf, allows me to see through your currently
very unpleasant tone and mentally "hear" your fundamentally good
intentions, but i cringe a bit when i put myself in the shoes of other
people reading you. I cannot speak for ttoine, but i think he means

Hi Jonathan,

Basically it consists in always making sure that our modified branch stays 
consistent with the changes made upstream.


I'm told that is in a few steps basically, just 1.) pull the source 
somehow, 2.) install the build depends, 3.) 'sed' the thing, to replace the 
colors 4.) run 'make' in its top directory.


I understand it can be challenging and intimidating to answer to the list, 
but i would prefer if you asked via that chanel in the future. It doesn't 
bother me that you adress me in private, on the contrary: i feel honored. 
What i'm thinking is that often times the group has better answers than me 
alone and other devels night benefit from your questions and the answers it 
generates :) Its just a matter of transparency: motivation is contagious ;)

harder task than expected and would imply maintaining our own branch of
it. Not sure we have anyone who is up for that.

In short: Numix would work /if/ we can live with red highlight color?
Then again, non of the existing ready made options i know of fit the
Ubuntu Studio color scheme fully.

Anyone else want to have a say or have ideas? Or better: maybe someone
wants to maintain a Numix UbuntuStudioBlue theme for us? :)

I've been looking into the theme thing with krytarik. As is now, we ship
ubuntu studio with greybird as default theme. Last time we discussed the
theme/look of the desktop, i want to remember many of us agreed on
finding a darker theme.

Both Murrine and Shimmer have greybird (our default theme atm). But
shimmer is shipped with Numix. And Numix is a pretty excellent theme.

The cons as i see them for Numix are these:

- The way focused windows differentiate themselves from other (same as
greybird)
- The very thin window border makes it hard to catch the corners to
resize (same as gryebird)

The pros:

- It hear it is well maintained, like gerybird.
- While it is dark, unlike most dark-themes you never get problems with
webpage searchboxes displaying white text on white background.

The default highlight color of numix is red, but krytarik found a fix
from xubuntu unicorn to address this and let us have ubuntustudio blue
instead.

So, if i sound like i am pushing for a shift from murrine to shimmer and
for shipping 16.10 with numix as default theme and window header, you
got me alright. :D But of course, we need to agree on it first.

What are your thoughts, team?

It is no different from a printed T in my opinion. It is just another

Afaik, the brand is owned by canonical. It looks like a nice company and i 
agree with Len. I would however ask hellotux to reach out to canonical to 
double check with them since i'm not 100% sure our team has any authority

The more i look at Geirdal pictures, the better i like these:

If they are used without the pictograms, like they were intended: as

same time, which i find to be a really poetic contrast.

I think this one is really beautyfull but it should be used without the
logos for the general "about" text in the feature tour (:

Set Hallstrom aka sakrecoer



The only thing I would like to remind of is of the "big picgture", which
should be about information. It's easy to become a bit obsessed about
the details of a design, but the importance is still around what the
whole thing informs.

And, what is the information? That is the question that needs to be
answered - not only with graphics, but with  the whole thing.

The current feature tour is old, and should be buried. It should be
replaced by something that does the same thing, but better. Better
information. Better graphics, but most importantly - better information.

I made a few shots that could work well as complementary pictures to the
more abstracto-figurative pictures Geirdal made for the categories.

I realize they might not be perfect, but maybe you like the idea?

I tried to make one for each category, but i think they all end up
having a lot of "audio focus" maybe it is a good thing? You tell me. One
sure thing is that the "graphic workflow" one, needs a different
on-screen content :D (too "cute, wtf, kindergarten")

The more i look at Geirdal pictures, the better i like these:

If they are used without the pictograms, like they were intended: as
backgrounds for text and screenshots, i think they are perfect! They
refer to analogue times with very contemporary elements. I think it
emulates what we are quite well: /linux for creative humans/ a digital
product made by analogue robots ;) And they are quiet and noisy at the
same time, which i find to be a really poetic contrast.

I think this one is really beautyfull but it should be used without the
logos for the general "about" text in the feature tour (:

It is risky, but i also find it very cool, fresh and inspiring. 90's
fractal with a millennial twist! This afternoon i will try put together
what i mean in a collage.

I'm convinced that, properly framed on the page, using geirdals pictures
could make the sexiest feature tour, ever :)

Thank you guys! I learned a lot from all you guy's input and like Ross
suggests; by getting started things get more tangible. (Also, with the
good help of krytarik, it gets fun :) ) And i have to say it would be
awesome to see you get your hands dirty with us, Ralf. Knowing your
console-fu and you rocketmouse science skills ;)

I saw Ross added the 2 audio packages to the seeds \o/
And i took care of 2 first entries for graphics. The seed part is
actually very easy, once you get a grip on the terminology that is.
(seeds? meta? :D) I will try my best to document my progress and compile
it for the wiki.

I've been looking into the theme thing with krytarik. As is now, we ship
ubuntu studio with greybird as default theme. Last time we discussed the
theme/look of the desktop, i want to remember many of us agreed on
finding a darker theme.

Both Murrine and Shimmer have greybird (our default theme atm). But
shimmer is shipped with Numix. And Numix is a pretty excellent theme.

The cons as i see them for Numix are these:

- The way focused windows differentiate themselves from other (same as
greybird)
- The very thin window border makes it hard to catch the corners to
resize (same as gryebird)

The pros:

- It hear it is well maintained, like gerybird.
- While it is dark, unlike most dark-themes you never get problems with
webpage searchboxes displaying white text on white background.

The default highlight color of numix is red, but krytarik found a fix
from xubuntu unicorn to address this and let us have ubuntustudio blue
instead.

So, if i sound like i am pushing for a shift from murrine to shimmer and
for shipping 16.10 with numix as default theme and window header, you
got me alright. :D But of course, we need to agree on it first.

What are your thoughts, team?

We seem to have a problem with murrine-themes:

I was informed that xubuntu are seeding shimmer-themes directly, rather
than murrine-themes. Shouldn't we do the same?

As with many of the technical things, i'm very much a noob in the
whatnots of theming and its dependencies. That is, if you guys can break
it down for me in the easiest possible way, i'd be super grateful.

Why doesn't somebody provide step by step examples too the mailing list,
when making the next packages. IOW really everything, how to package,
how and what to upload. What to care about regarding Ubuntu policy.
Since everything like this is kept as a secret, resp. is only provided
by crappy English documentations, nobody is able to help you.

ended at feature definition freeze on may 26th and that from there on we 
would work on implementing (adding, removing) what was discussed and 
entered in the blueprints, before we got to the featurefreeze on august 
18th... ?

This is what i am in favor of.

That is: I am also in favor of keeping 32bit version. I also value the
ecological aspect of reusing old machines, and motivating friends and
acquaintances to reuse their old machine as an excuse to introduce them
to FLOSS, as Len and Yoshi express. Given the small size of the team,
i'm sure we would save a lot of sweat by dropping 32-bit. But i think
that argument says more about the work we need to do to repopulate the
team, than what system we should support or not.

On that note, i'd like to say: Welcome to the list, Yoshi. :)

i've found the schedule for dot releases now [1]
Although it doesn't announce for when .2 is planned. Is there another
wiki page for these schedules?

Indeed, Ross will be away. I can write the release notes.. Although i
don't find any previous dot release notes for ubuntustudio to base on.
Is it better to edit the Xenial release note page [2], or should it be a
separate one? I did find a "change summary" for the 14.04.x releases
[3], maybe a link to the upcoming 16.04.1 change summary and an
announcement on the website is enough?

Prior to adressing the list, i reached out privately to Jimmy and Kaj. In 
all honesty, they were both very short mails. I didn't see any reason to 
develop any argumentation or justifications as to why i adressed them like 
i did, and opted for simply stateing the facts: that i am sorry and what i 
am sorry for. I regret making Jimmy feel rejected and for using provocative 
phrasing and added that i in fact do value his feedback when he finds the 
time for it. With Kaj i regret my wording onlist and in private and added 
that i do not see him like the bad person i painted him as, in the midst of 
my anger.


Kaj responded quickly and humbly, Jimmy is taking his time but i think it 
is fair enough.

Hi all,

First of all: i am very sorry things went so sour in that discussion. I
feel i owe everyone an apology: I apologize for letting my own feelings
take the lead. Kaj, Jimmy and the group as a hole.

Who wants to work with a grumpy extremist with static ways? Not me.

Many of the blames i formulated were probably aimed at myself: i
understand this project is not the place to push my freesoftware
philosophy agenda in 7 steps, to Set us free, hackers, to Set us free. I
understand i need to leave discussions open for solutions in an
inclusive way for the benefit of the team and the users, over the
benefit of my personal integrity. I realize i tend to be triggered by
the idea of using mainstream media, and i will work on that. While i
admit still being in the midst of a thought process, for now i can say
this: i do understand it is up to the community in its entirety; users
and devels a-like to decide how, when, why and what tools we use. Not up
to my personal beliefs to determine what is appropriate or not for our
project. This is our project, not mine.

I understand i came across as an extremist/purist/grumpycat, but i
assure you i am not. I am just a pingnu perfectly comfortable with the
compromises Ubuntu does in order to enable the community to welcome
users of all levels of computer literacy. If i wasn't comfortable with
this, i wouldn't be here to begin with. TBH with you and myself, i'm
still working on understanding what made me allow myself to be stubborn
and exclusive, and while at the moment i might not be in the brightest
most secure position in my life away from keyboard, i will work hard to
address it and to make sure i do not get the community mixed up with my
moods again.

I reached out fairly soon the to community council to ask for help but
they haven't responded yet. In all sincerity, i'm glad they didn't get
back ASAP, because it let me marinate in my mess for a moment giving me
time to get back down and reflect upon my own behavior. But i look
forward to develop contact with them because i think they have
experiences, tools and ideas we may benefit from. I do not plan to bail
on you, unless that would be the desire/best-interest of the group and i
hope you will give me the chance to show you that i can learn from my
mistakes.

Hopefully, from here we will be able to move forward to release yet
another great version of Ubuntu Studio in happy collaboration, without
leaving any mess under the rugg...

Sure, flaming someone up publicly like you do now is a good way to make
someone back down. FTR, i've expressed countless of times that i came to
understand that jimmy did NOT talk on behalf of a group. The only one
who took things personaly in this case is Jimmy. However, since you now
make this your own personal issue publicly: if anyone has a record in
bad conflict-management enabling them to be judgemental about this kind

set up a sollution for video conference. Using hangouts or skype would
exclude major part of the team from taking part.

And like i said MANY times, i don't care what jimmy does in his
freetime. However, being a member of the team, if jimmy writes "we" to a
3rd part in the context of this list then he has to assume to be read as
taking an initiative on behlaf of the group. This is basic
communciation. Had that mail of his been sent off-list directly to Devin

of confusion in the discussion regarding what the team could do for NEC
or not, i felt Jimmy's freelance shot had the potential to build uppon

Exactly, we are FOR free software. That means we should first look for
freesoftware alternatives. If you come with a plan, than make it happen.

Now i understand Jimmy did NOT speak on behalf of the group. Why is
that? Maybe he hasn't felt like a member for a long time? I don't know,
i can just speculate. His departue sure is a loss, and i wish things
would have worked out differently. But they didn't. I understand you
stand up for your buddy, but reviving this discussion is not going to
sort anything out.

If anyone has a problem with with my attitude in this discussion and
think there is something i should learn, i welcome them to bring it up
with either me or jimmy off-list.

No jimmy: you missunderstood me. I think you need to read my mails a
couple of more times: all i did was to say you may use your time however
you want with whatever software you want, but to underline that you may
use your own personal tools for your own personal agenda. Basicaly,

Sure thing! However, at this point, there is nothing much we can do
since the issue should be addressed to canonical. But like i wrote and
write again: you are welcome to give your personal assistance to anyone.
And If you do so using the group's tools, please be wary to pinpoint
that it is your own personal initiative, and avoid generalizing terms
such as "we", when you in fact mean "he/her and me".

best to help you to the possible extend.

However, and i repeat, canonical is your channel, they might indeed be

the community I would try to make that happen, within my own 
schedule. As he wrote it was difficult through email I suggested 
another form of communication that might be easier.



Misunderstand me right, I'd love to see you point us to existing tools or

internal issues more easily. However, hangouts or skype are no options.
How the devel team discuss internal things was not in scope. I 
suggested using a video conference or Google Hangout with 
another person, hence the "we". Not "we" as everyone on the 
list.
As Canonical (or anyone else) has not found any good 
alternative so far, all Ubuntu conferences have used Google 
Hangout for years. Unfortunate yes, but until good alternatives 
are available that is what they have chosen. As I suggested a 
call with someone outside of the open source world a hangout 
might be the best way to start as it much more likely that they 
have used it before or at least will be able to easily set it up 
to discuss matters. At a later stage other means of 
communication might be used.


Saying that it's not an option to use anything other than free 
software it's quite narrow minded and not very productive. What 
you chose to use for internal discussions within the devel team 
is up to you and the team. Besides, what I use as a person to 
help someone out, who is considering trying to use open source, 
is up to me.


Surely, I would not make any promises or speak on behalf of the 
whole community or Canonical or anything. But to listen to NEC 
and their questions and perhaps point them in a direction to get 
answers. That's how the community works.

No, it doesn't sound correct. We are a small team of volunteers working
for the love of Art under the Ubuntu (canonical) umbrella, and we
haven't given you any such promises. Have you talked to Canonical? They
are the only ones that may pronounce themselves on this level. The
Ubuntu Studio developer team is dedicated to package multimedia software
into an Ubuntu flavor for multimedia production. You *cannot* expect
Ubuntu _Studio_ to prioritize your schools matter over any other user.

Title: Backports, the benefits and the consequences.

Ubuntu Studio is happy to announce that backports are going to be
rolling out soon and that the first one is Ardour. Backports
(https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports) are newer version of
applications, rolled back to "older" version of the System. For example
in the case of Ardour, Ubuntu Studio users running 16.04 will be able to
have the latest version available in 16.10 /without/ upgrading the
entire system. This is a great thing, and with great power comes great
responsibility: Backports have to be manually installed by the user, and
the user will be required to carefully and think about the possible
consequences:
[strong]The new version may be better, but it could also have some new
bugs not found yet, and sometimes the new version might use a newer data
format that is _not backwards compatible_.[/strong]

This means that if you are in the middle of a project, backporting your
tools can potentially compromise your projects deadline, or worse.
Whatever mistake you do, you can of course always rollback, but
remember: *Better safe than sorry* : _always_ back-up your project data
before installing a backport.

In order to be able to provide you with backports for other pieces of
software shipped with Ubuntu Studio, the devel-team could need a hand.

we should find something existing to work from if we want to pull this
off. Something we could easily convert into monochrome. Making good
pictograms that work in small and large scale is a very tedious,
complicated and fine task.

I hope you understand that i'm not saying your icons or ugly or anything
like that. I'm just saying they don't fit the project as they look now. :)

Xenial 16.04.1 point release on 21st July
Trusty 14.04.5 point release on 6th August


Who needs wireless network(?): I was about to ask about these 
dot-releases next :) Is there a schedule-wiki-page for these?



Note: I will not be around on the 21st July, so I hope experience hands
like Len, Kaj and flocculant can help out if required. Unless we are
allowed to do it at our own pace?


Your absence might be a good reason to do it at our own pace, but given 
the margin i'm sure we can come up with a master-plan to make it happen 
while you have a great and relaxed July 21st :)

Sorry I can't give a more polished suggestion of wording just now. We
could probably do with a shorter "how to test description", as the
linked pages cover lots. A tester just needs to monitor the Backports
List wiki, and then install the Backport Testing ppa and test, and then
report the results on the bug.

[ubuntu-studio-devel] Alpha & Beta testing

Hi list,

Today on the release list they asked if we wanted to participate in the
alpha and beta releases.

I assumed we are not participating in the alpha 1, and guaranteed that
we will participate in the final Beta. But how about Alpha 2 and Beta 1?

I understand its a bit of a "momentum"-moment and that it takes from our
precious personal summer-time, but perhaps it would be a good exercise
to participate in Alpha 2? We have a few new member that could benefit
from seeing how it works before we reach the final bosses on September

What are your thoughts about it?

I sure did misunderstand you.. sorry. I sure hope someone engaging in a
mission with that level of threat isn't relying on ubuntu studio.

So i'd put it this way:
