intel gives me pain. As soon as I login X seems to segfault and returns

My experience (Dell Optima 280GX with integrated Intel graphics) might
point to the same problem:
Since yesterday's (June 3) update, at screen idle (I've disabled it now
in Power Manager), and running a game, video or youtube full screen, I
get kicked out to the log-in screen.

X is also crashing here after login. The compiz update to
0.8.2-0ubuntu12 changed the behavior somewhat. Before the update, X
crashed as soon as I had entered my password. After the update, I can
see at least gnome-panel loading, then it crashes.
Note that X only crashes if I enable KMS. Without
I too am having these very problems on this very configuration. When I
try to wake up after a suspend or a hibernate, I get stuck at a screen
that has the outline of the login window, without any text. I've tried
all manner of key combos, and nothing will let me proceed -- I just have
to do a
AFAIK, this bug cannot be fully fixed until Intel fixes the problems in
their new drivers, the introduction of
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphics_Execution_Manager seems to have
failed badly.
So it's confusing to say that it's fixed in karmic. Maybe this should
simply be changed.

Karmic xorg intel 2.7.99.1 latest update as of today, tried KMS and it
still fails on i845 with invisible cursor with modeset = 1.
Running now with modeset = 0, rather slowly with GtkPerf 42 seconds
while VESA runs faster in 27 seconds.

connected via vga-out.
The highest resolution xrandr shows me is 1152x864, tough the monitor is
capable of 1280x1024.

A further note. Once I started seeing this, Firefox quickly got worse
and worse. Almost all text became corrupted. A reboot fixed it. That

Just tried Reinhart Tartler 2.4 from ppa and doesn't work either. I
attach the log.
Good. That was what I expected, since the 2.4.1 from that PPA contains
the patch from post-2.4.1. What would be good news, is if we could
revert the patch in question from that package and it would then work.

At present, with a 6 months release
cycle, users should probably be considering moving to a release around
the time its successor is released. Or staying with an LTS, and
upgrading when the successor's .1 comes out.
