Consider this, which is very similar to what my current project does: A user enters some styled text into a field. The text is stored as htmltext in a custom property. Because the field is a background field, there may be many of these properties per field, and the correct text is displayed based on the stack's current status. In my project, a preOpenCard handler looks for the correct property to determine which text to display. In some cases the script needs to determine whether the custom property has content or not in order to take action. Because the text in the field may not be the text that needs to be checked, the custom property is checked. If it contains paragraph tags, it isn't empty and the script fails. (In my case this doesn't matter; in other cases it could.) I anticipate you will say don't put anything in the custom property if you plan to check it -- but if the content is set by the user then we have no control over that. And I agree -- if there is no content, then the engine should not put anything into the custom property. It isn't difficult to script around the behavior but I think it shouldn't happen in the first place. And it does defy the definition of empty. ___ use-livecode mailing list use-livecode@lists.runrev.com Please visit this url to subscribe, unsubscribe and manage your subscription preferences: http://lists.runrev.com/mailman/listinfo/use-livecode
Re: Problem with setting htmlText of field to empty in LiveCode 6.6 RC2
Trevor, When a browser renders p/p it displays nothing. Correct htmlText starts and ends with p tags. That's the LiveCode convention. Anything else is not htmlText. Therefore, if a text is empty, to have valid htmlText the propety still needs to return the tags. Currently, we wil always know for sure whether data is htmlText or not. If we remove the tags, there is no way to know if data is htmlText if that data happens to be empty. -- Best regards, Mark Schonewille Economy-x-Talk Consulting and Software Engineering Homepage: http://economy-x-talk.com Twitter: http://twitter.com/xtalkprogrammer KvK: 50277553 Use Color Converter to convert CMYK, RGB, RAL, XYZ, H.Lab and other colour spaces. http://www.color-converter.com Buy my new book Programming LiveCode for the Real Beginner http://qery.us/3fi LiveCode on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/runrev/ On 3/19/2014 20:08, Trevor DeVore wrote: On Wed, Mar 19, 2014 at 2:36 PM, Scott Rossi sc...@tactilemedia.com wrote: Maybe it helps (or hinders) to consider the fact the following renders as empty in a web browser, even though clearly there is code content present: html body /body /html True. Re: properties vs local variable
Hi Terry, Can you use arrays? They aren't necessarily faster, but in this case they might be. Although you have a repeat-for loop, you're still updating a counter to keep track of your second data list. Using arrays just might speed things up, because the engine won't need to count things from the beginning in every loop but can instead read the correct elements from both arrays directly. I suspect this solution will either be slower or just a little fast, but it could be worth a try. on displayData tRecNum --put milliseconds() into tS lock screen lock messages set the uRecNum of me to tRecNum put the uCols of me into tCols put the uRows of me into tRows set the itemDelimiter to tab put 1 into tFldNum put 1 into tLineNum put line tRecNum to tRecNum + tRows - 1 of the uData of me into tData put line tRecNum to tRecNum + tRows - 1 of the uSelected of me into tSelectedData split tData by cr // numeric keys split tSelectedData by cr // same numeric keys repeat for each line myKey in the keys of tData // use numeric keys if tSelectedData[myKey] then put 62,117,215 into tBackColor put 255,255,255 into tForeColor else put 0,0,0 into tForeColor if myKey mod 2 = 0 then put 244,246,250 into tBackColor else put 255,255,255 into tBackColor end if end if put 1 into fldNum repeat for each item tCellData in item 1 to tCols of tData[myKey] put tCellData into fld tFldNum of me set the backgroundColor of fld tFldNum of me to tBackColor set the foregroundColor of fld tFldNum of me to tForeColor add 1 to tFldNum end repeat // add 1 to tLineNum end repeat unlock messages unlock screen --put milliseconds() - ts into cd fld result end displayData You might want to check that this script actually does what you want. Re: properties vs local variable
Hi Terry, The split command itself doesn't slow it down, because that happens outside the repeat loop. However, arrays appear not to be the fastest way to access data and apparently in this case the removal of the counter was not enough to compensate for the addition of the arrays. I see no thText in your original script. Re: properties vs local variable
Hi Terry, Since the arrays don't add any efficiency in this case (as expected), perhaps it is a good idea to use a different approach. I understand that even fields should always have backColor 62,117,215 and white as the foreColor, unless line tLineNum of tSelectedData is not true. If line tLineNum of tSelectedData is not true, then you want even end odd fields to have different colours. There are a few ways to increase speed here. First of all, you can make a group with colorized fields. Depending on how often line tLineNum of tSelectedData is true or false, you can give fields the required colours and only set the foreColor and backColor of a field if it has to change. This could increase speed by almost 50%, again depending on the values of line tLineNum of tSelectedData. You can also change the repeat loop, using constants instead of variables. If I'm not mistaken, your repeat loop should now look like this: repeat for each line tRecData in tData put item 1 to tCols of tRecData into tFldData put 1 into tFldNum if line tLineNum of tSelectedData = true then // commenting out the following lines, // assuming fields have these colours by default // put 62,117,215 into tBackColor // put 255,255,255 into tForeColor repeat for each item tCellData in tFldData put tCellData into fld tFldNum of me // the next two lines should no longer be necessary // set the backgroundColor of fld tFldNum of me to // tBackColor // set the foregroundColor of fld tFldNum of me to // tForeColor add 1 to tFldNum end repeat else if tLineNum mod 2 = 0 then repeat for each item tCellData in tFldData put tCellData into fld tFldNum of me set the backgroundColor of fld tFldNum of me to \ 244,246,250 set the foregroundColor of fld tFldNum of me to black add 1 to tFldNum end repeat else repeat for each item tCellData in tFldData put tCellData into fld tFldNum of me set the backgroundColor of fld tFldNum of me to white set the foregroundColor of fld tFldNum of me to black add 1 to tFldNum end repeat end if end if add 1 to tLineNum end repeat This could be a little faster. -- Best regards, Mark Schonewille Economy-x-Talk Consulting and Software Engineering Homepage: http://economy-x-talk.com Twitter: http://twitter.com/xtalkprogrammer KvK: 50277553 Use Color Converter to convert CMYK, RGB, RAL, XYZ, H.Lab and other colour spaces. http://www.color-converter.com Buy my new book Programming LiveCode for the Real Beginner http://qery.us/3fi LiveCode on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/runrev/ On 3/10/2014 16:30, Terence Heaford wrote: Mark, Set thText is just a setProp routine in the group to receive the return/tab delimited data. thText then sets a custom property of the group plus the scrollbar settings depending on the number of lines in the data displayData is the only routine that places data into the fields. Re: Why is everybody better than me?
Hi Mats, (Almost?) all e-mail clients have an option to quote the message that is being answered. If you check this option in the preferences of your client, the previous message will be included automatically. Usually, you can also choose whether the previous message should be before (above) or after (below) your own text. Personally, I prefer to read quoted messages below the answer, because that doesn't force me to scroll down to the new reply in every single e-mail. Re: Support for Mac OSX 10.5
Ben, Dozens of my customers are still using Mac OS X 10.4. I'm quite surprised that you are asking about 10.5. Perhaps you shouldn't ask this list but some neutral source to find out how many people are really using older systems. Keep in mind that for people who focus on the Mac market, no longer supporting OSX 10.5 might make them move on to another development platform or put them out of business. Also, I was at a university some time ago, where they had a classroom full with eMacs running OS X 10.3. I had to use an old version of Revolution and make changes to my scripts for them. No longer supporting OSX 10.5 will definitely be a blow in the face for the educational market! -- Best regards, Mark Schonewille Economy-x-Talk Consulting and Software Engineering Homepage: http://economy-x-talk.com Twitter: http://twitter.com/xtalkprogrammer KvK: 50277553 Use Color Converter to convert CMYK, RGB, RAL, XYZ, H.Lab and other colour spaces. http://www.color-converter.com Buy my new book Programming LiveCode for the Real Beginner http://qery.us/3fi LiveCode on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/runrev/ On 2/25/2014 17:18, Benjamin Beaumont wrote: Dear List Members, As many of you will know, we have been overhauling the LiveCode engine for the last 12 months or so. For those of you who are watching the LiveCode Github repository, you'll notice that: - LiveCode 7 (Unicode) is nearing a workable engine. - LiveCode 6.7 (Cocoa) is nearing a workable engine. As we approach a DP we have a decision to make in regards to our continuing support for older platforms, in particular, Mac OSX 10.5. LiveCode 6.7 requires considerable additional development resource to enable us to continue supporting Mac OSX 10.5. The cocoa port is all but complete for MacOS 10.6 and above. Our current plan is to put out a DP of LiveCode 6.7 as soon on the final elements are running and then return to round out Mac OSX 10.5 support in subsequent DPs. LiveCode 7.0 has also required us to spend considerable amounts of time ensuring compatibility with 10.5 and has complicated our build process. As the 7.0 project matures, we'll have to continue investing development resource to ensure that Mac OSX 10.5 is fully support, above and beyond the resources used to support 10.6 and above. So we'd like to consult the community to gauge whether now is the appropriate time to cease our support for Mac OS X 10.5. It would mean that LiveCode 6.6 would be the final Mac OSX 10.5 compatible version. We're keen to get the right balance between investing our development resources in progress and platform support. Are there compelling reasons to support MacOS X 10.5 in LiveCode 6.7 and above? If so, we'd love to hear them. Also, if we don't drop support at this point, when would it be appropriate for us to do so? Below is our list of concerns and also reasons we feel it benefits our team and the community to drop support at this time. Concerns MacOS 10.5 is the final version to support PowerPC. As a result, owners of PowerPC based Macs would not be able to use LiveCode 6.7 or above. However, only 3.8% of Mac desktop computers are running MacOS X 10.5 according to netmarketshare.com: http://www.netmarketshare.com/report.aspx?qprid=11qpaf=qpcustom=Mac+OS+X+10.5qpcustomb=0 Users of LiveCode would be able to continue supporting their PowerPC customers by building with LiveCode 6.6, but as a result would have to start shipping two mac installers. Pros Dropping support has the following advantages for the LiveCode team and the community: 1. We spend less time back porting the 10.6 cocoa implementation to support 10.5 (10.5's Cocoa APIs are less mature than 10.6's and it isn't possible to completely eliminate Carbon usage for a 10.5 port). We estimate it will take 3-4 weeks to get the core engine working on 10.5. This saving also applies to all future projects. 2. We spend less time getting new developments to build and run under 10.5. For example, the new libraries to support unicode took a considerable investment of engineering resource to compile for 10.5. 3. We can use newer compilers on Mac that have improved optimisation features, the result being a faster LiveCode engine. 4. Implementing desktop features for Mac becomes simpler (and as a result quicker) with the API's being relatively consistent from 10.6-10.9. This enables us to deliver features faster. The remainder of the stretch goals for the kickstarter project are 'feature' implementations. Supporting 10.5 requires us to implement the features for more than one API, in many cases doubling the amount of work we have to do. 5. Building and feature additions become easier for open-source contributors. Thanks for reading up to this point. We appreciate your feedback as it will help us in our decision making process. Warm regards, Ben _ Benjamin

Jacque, Dropping support for 10.5 isn't the same as dropping support for PowerPC. AFAIK, PPC support doesn't really exist for quite a while now. 10.5, however, also runs on a number of Mac models with Intel processor and LiveCode would no longer be useful on those machines. No, Andrew. I think this is exactly one of RunRev's problems. Too often, they seem to have no attention for how many people are affected by a small bug or a strategical change, which seems to be rather unimportant at first sight. If you count the total number of hours that people will have to spend on testing their scripts, you will understand that this is indeed a lot of work compared to the man hours needed to maintain LC for OSX 10.5 a little longer. -- Best regards, Mark Schonewille Economy-x-Talk Consulting and Software Engineering Homepage: http://economy-x-talk.com Twitter: http://twitter.com/xtalkprogrammer KvK: 50277553 Use Color Converter to convert CMYK, RGB, RAL, XYZ, H.Lab and other colour spaces. http://www.color-converter.com Buy my new book Programming LiveCode for the Real Beginner http://qery.us/3fi LiveCode on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/runrev/ On 2/25/2014 18:36, Andrew Kluthe wrote: Currently, I don't target mac so it really my input doesn't matter much. Hi Kay, You can include the files of the folder in a custom property in a savingStandalone handler (or is it mobileSavingStandalone?) and write the files to the correct place when your app starts the first time. [ANN] Installer Maker 1.8.2 update
Hi (again), A new version of Installer Maker has been released. This update, 1.8.2, is now made available not only as a Plugin for LiveCode but also as a standalone application for users of Xojo, HyperStudio, Prezy, SuperCard and other cross-platform RAD tools. Installer Maker 1.8.2 allows for saving all settings in a profile. This profile can later be read from disk and re-used for your project again. This way, you don't need to re-enter all settings and options every time you make your installer. You do need to import your new files. Note that this is a new feature, which we expect to improve in the near future. We appreciate your feedback. Additionally, it is no longer possible to accidentally associate the .exe file extension with your executable. We have received 2 reports of users trying to associate the .exe file extension. Although it should be obvious that the .exe file extension whould not be associated with any software, we have decided to disallow the .exe file extension from now on. The plug-in can only be used with LiveCode 4.5 - 5.x and the commercial version of LiveCode 6 and later. The standalone version of Installer Maker can be used with (almost) any development software package. Once in a while, we receive a feature request, bug report or other comments. If you decide to send an e-mail about Installer Maker, please include extensive descriptions of the features you request or the bugs you encounter with pictures and other relevant files. Hi Bill, It looks like you put the array into myDatagridArray in one handler and try to read this variable in another handler. Another possibility is that you made a small spelling error in the variable name. It is also possible that you are check the value of the variable in the script editor while using the somewhat unreliable debugger. Re: 6.5.2 Doesn't Remember Script Editor Location
Hi Ray, When the script editor opens, the message seem to be locked. I tried to trigger the preOpenStack message when the script editor opens in MetaCard and that works perfectly. Apparently, the creator of the LiveCode script editor doesn't want us to intercept messages while editing a script in LiveCode. However, you can use the editScript message. Unfortunately, this message is sent to the control whose script is being edited and not to the script editor. (I write unfortunately in quotes, because it is still expected behaviour and necessary for the script editor to work). In the editScript message, you can loop through all stacks that contain revScriptEditor in their short name and check that they are on screen. Here's an example: constant lPreferredRect =-1157,-111,-180,644 local lScriptEditorIsOpen on checkScriptEditorLocs if lScriptEditorIsOpen is not true then if there is a stack revNewScriptEditor 1 then set the rect of stack revNewScriptEditor 1 to lPreferredRect put true into lScriptEditorIsOpen end if end if repeat for each line myStack in the windows if myStack contains revNewScriptEditor then put false into myVis repeat for each line myRect in the screenRects if there is a stack myStack then if the topleft of stack myStack is within myRect or \ the topRight of stack myStack is within myRect or \ the bottomLeft of stack myStack is within myRect \ or the bottomRight of stack myStack is within \ myRect then put true into myVis exit repeat end if end if end repeat if myVis is false and there is a stack myStack then set the loc of window myStack to the screenLoc end if end if end repeat end checkScriptEditorLocs on editScript put (revNewScriptEditor is in the openStacks) into \ lScriptEditorIsOpen send checkScriptEditorLocs to me in 0 milliseconds pass editScript end editScript Make sure that this script is in a front script. The funny thing is that while testing the script editor, I seem to have broken it. Its default behaviour now is to open on my primary screen. Therefore, I have added a little feature, which opens it on my secondary screen, if no script editor is open yet. For me, this is useful, because I edit all scripts in one window. Change the constant at the top of the script to set the location where you want your script editor to open. Let me know if you encounter any problems when trying this script. -- Best regards, Mark Schonewille Economy-x-Talk Consulting and Software Engineering Homepage: http://economy-x-talk.com Twitter: http://twitter.com/xtalkprogrammer KvK: 50277553 Use Color Converter to convert CMYK, RGB, RAL, XYZ, H.Lab and other colour spaces. http://www.color-converter.com Buy my new book Programming LiveCode for the Real Beginner http://qery.us/3fi LiveCode on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/runrev/ On 1/30/2014 18:25, Ray wrote: Let me know how it goes Mark. Re: 6.5.2 Doesn't Remember Script Editor Location
Hi Ray, I can't really confirm this for the current version of LC, but in the past, the script editor used to open at the bottom of the screen, with the title bar barely visible. Every time when I opened the script editor, I had to move it upwards. Probably, deleting the preferences stack solved the issue temporarily, until a re-install or an update fixed. If you want to write a backscript, you can create a plug-in that opens automatically. I have created a simple plug-in which disables a few IDE features and checks that all windows are on one of my screens. When I connect a different monitor or travel with my laptop without secondary screen, the plug-in makes sure that all windows are visible on one of the screens. The plug-in also kills the dreaded altKey message sent by the dictionary. -- Best regards, Mark Schonewille Economy-x-Talk Consulting and Software Engineering Homepage: http://economy-x-talk.com Twitter: http://twitter.com/xtalkprogrammer KvK: 50277553 Use Color Converter to convert CMYK, RGB, RAL, XYZ, H.Lab and other colour spaces. http://www.color-converter.com Buy my new book Programming LiveCode for the Real Beginner http://qery.us/3fi LiveCode on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/runrev/ On 1/29/2014 20:39, Ray wrote: Actually I don't know of any version for quite some time now which HAS re-opened the script editor window where I last closed it. [ANN] What if there's no way to upload a file to a server?¨
Hi, More than once, the question has been asked how to upload files to a server from a mobile device. An important problem is that sockets aren't supported by default and a bug on Android preventing pictures from being saved to an album or attached to an e-mail. You might use Dropbox or a similar service, but requiring your customers to use an additional service doesn't give a very professional impression. I have created a very simple LiveCode+PHP library, which uploads small files to a server. It might also work with bigger files, but I haven't tested this yet. This library works on any Android/iOS device and also works on desktop machines with any operating system. There is no documentation yet and the current version is quite crude. No security has been implemented yet. If you're curious, you might want to have a look. If you need an off-the-shelve solution, then maybe not yet. The library can be downloaded at http://qery.us/43p after making a donation (or if you made a donation less than 1 year ago). Currently, our server doesn't send e-mails automatically and you may have to wait up to 24 hours to get access to the private downloads. -- Best regards, Mark Schonewille Economy-x-Talk Consulting and Software Engineering Homepage: http://economy-x-talk.com Twitter: http://twitter.com/xtalkprogrammer KvK: 50277553 Use Color Converter to convert CMYK, RGB, RAL, XYZ, H.Lab and other colour spaces. http://www.color-converter.com Buy my new book Programming LiveCode for the Real Beginner http://qery.us/3fi Fill out this survey please http://livecodebeginner.economy-x-talk.com/survey/ ___ use-livecode mailing list use-livecode@lists.runrev.com Please visit this url to subscribe, unsubscribe and manage your subscription preferences: http://lists.runrev.com/mailman/listinfo/use-livecode

Re: Using sockets
Hi Pete, Somehow, your server doesn't return data to client on the socket that the client expects. The extra number might be a socket identifier. By using the socket, you can distinguish connections with different clients: 127.0.0.1:10100|213213 and 127.0.0.1:10100|567657 are two different sockets. If the client connects to a server and the new socket opened on the server side is 127.0.0.1:10100|567657 but you read from socket 127.0.0.1:10100 with a callback message, a message will never be received on that socket and eventually the socketTimeout message will be triggered. If this doesn´t solve it, can you post your script to show the problem? If you want a complete example using sockets, you can read the telnet example on my blog at http://qery.us/43g and if you happen to have my book, you can also read about sockets there in chapter 18 ;-) -- Best regards, Mark Schonewille Economy-x-Talk Consulting and Software Engineering Homepage: http://economy-x-talk.com Twitter: http://twitter.com/xtalkprogrammer KvK: 50277553 Use Color Converter to convert CMYK, RGB, RAL, XYZ, H.Lab and other colour spaces. http://www.color-converter.com Buy my new book Programming LiveCode for the Real Beginner http://qery.us/3fi Fill out this survey please http://livecodebeginner.economy-x-talk.com/survey/ On 1/14/2014 18:22, Peter Haworth wrote: Diving into yet another new are of Livecode for me - sockets. Vaughn, I just saw your message. Maybe it would help if you knew that I have no clue what the code book is and what you're offering or asking. I do find some logs at C:\Program Files\Paradigma Software\VServer x64\vlogs\. Those tell me that a valid license wasn't found. And this is strange then. In Log file is mentioned named of THAT licsene file, which you have dropped? When you have got this license file? May be it is older of 1 year? If this was free license, just get newer from our store. If that was paid and expired, then you may need upgrade. I got the same reply from you in the support incident. I propose we keep this discussion on the mailing list in case it is useful to someone else. There is no error message. All I get returned is ERROR 0x82000 and I looked in the XML file to see what it might mean. If LICENSE file is not valid, then vserver just NOT starts. You can check Activity Monitor and see that there is no such running application/service. So of course your app cannot connect. BTW Vserver seemed to work earlier. I am really confused, now that it has stopped working. Where do I find documentation about error codes, the difference between the server and the external, and differences between the open-source (or should I write free) and commercial editions of Valentina? All de documentation I can find is very old and is still speaking of Revolution instead of LiveCode.
