Re: iOS Privacy Manifest Requirements begin May 1

2024-03-28 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Hello Henry,

We're aware of this upcoming requirement and it will be addressed in 9.6.12, we
expect an RC of this in April. You will probably also be able to
retrospectively do it with a custom plist for 9.6.11.

Re: [[ ANN ]] Release 9.6.11 RC-1

2023-11-02 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
It'll be to do with having using manual activation. I think that will get saved
to your preferences file, which is shared among LiveCode installations, so
you'll see it go to manual activation instead of automatic, if thats the way
you've previously activated.

At least that's my understanding of how it all works :)

Hi Rolf,

No, the problem is not related to signing. The problem centers on how Sonoma
handles menus, and any app that contains a menu will crash on Sonoma unless
built with LiveCode 9.6.10 or 10 dp-6.

Rick - could you leave a comment on the lesson? Then I can add it to the queue
to be corrected/updated as needed.

I could (and probably will) just add it to the queue anyway but I'd like to
encourage people to comment on the lessons where they find issues, as we
routinely address these and it helps to keep the lessons up to date.

Re: OT - Mac Notarization Problem - Desperation setting in

2023-08-25 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Tim - codesigning is not my expertise but failed password credentials I deal
with frequently :). A possible gotcha is that your password is saved to your
keychain, and then, if you change it, the changed password is overwritten by
the saved password, invisibly since the password is hidden when entered. I
would recommend deleting all saved passwords from your keychain for your
certificates etc, and re-entering them to eliminate this possibility.

Probably not the issue but you never know...

Re: No progress updates on LC 10. Am i the only one who is concerned?

2023-07-25 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Hi Matthias and list folks,

We are working on LiveCode 10 dp6. We expect it to ship in August, with support
for Web Fonts plus a number of bug fixes. Web Fonts turned out to be rather
trickier than expected but it looks like we've got it more or less sorted out
now.

If there are specific bugs in 10 dp-5 that are really problematic for you, its
worth flagging them to me in support (not on the list) so I can at least find
out for you if they will be fixed in dp-6. Please send me the bug report number
from the Quality Center for checking.

Yes, it only retains this "learning" for the session with you. To ensure wider

Training the AI to write better LiveCode

2023-01-11 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Dear List Members and LiveCode Gurus,

We're looking for your help. I should start with a warning though: this chatGPT
is addictive, you might lose a few hours of your life. But you will have fun
doing it :)

Our idea is that the chatGPT to be found here:

https://chat.openai.com

is a truly great way for beginners and even more advanced LiveCoders to get
into LiveCode, learn scripting and get common scripts pre-written. It could be
an immensely powerful tool in bringing LiveCode to a wider audience. (In case
you haven't already wasted hours of your life playing with it, you can ask it
to write a LiveCode script for any specific task, and it will take its best
shot, with very passable results).

Unfortunately, at the moment it has a tendency to make schoolboy (or should I
say schoolbot?) errors. It gets the script mostly right but there will be
issues that a beginner would not know how to correct. We would love it if the
community could help it learn to write beautiful, correct, LiveCode. To do
this, it needs feedback. We asked it how to give feedback and this is what it
suggests:

There are a few ways you can provide feedback on ChatGPT:
• You can submit feedback through the OpenAI website by navigating to
the “Contact Us” page and selecting “Model Feedback” as the topic.
• You can also provide feedback on the OpenAI GPT-3 forum, where users
can share their experiences, ask questions, and provide suggestions for
improving the model.
• You could also contact the openai team to share more detailed
feedback and suggestions
In any case, clear and detailed feedback is helpful in understanding the
problem and improve the model.

Just telling it what it got wrong we think isn't the right way to go, it will
only correct it for that particular session. We need to rat on it in to its
teachers so that it can be trained correctly.

So, if you are up for the challenge and you have a bit of time to kill, we'd
love you to a) ask chatGPT to write LiveCode scripts and b) send any resulting
errors with detailed feedback to the Model Feedback area.

Thank you!

Best Regards and Happy New Year to all!

2022-08-03 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
We are open. Yesterday was a bank holiday in Scotland yes. We don't work at
weekends. I have a fair bit to catch up on and I'm not at my usual desk owing
to some family issues hence cannot answer the phone. I see your ticket and it
is going to get a response very shortly... I am nearing it in the queue.

Re: MegaBundle whatnot

2022-07-11 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Kaveh and Co,

We have actually simplified the licensing in the move to Single Edition, which
is what is causing the confusion here. There is no such thing as Indy or
Business anymore. It's all just LiveCode. You pick the platforms you want and
off you go...

However the new Enhancements Bundle widgets post-date Indy/Business and hence
do not recognise it. The solution being simply to run the latest version. 9.6.8
or 10 dp 4 will be just fine.

single window IDE in testing. This is not as yet "in the wild". This has only
so far been made available to the attendees for LCG 22/23 Feature Focus
sessions.

In case anyone is confused.

Potential third party products

2022-05-20 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Dear List Members,

We're conducting a general review of our vendor program and I was wondering if
there are any lurking potential vendors on this list? Anyone with an addon for
LiveCode they'd like to sell via our Extensions store? Or is there something
you know of or find particularly useful, made by someone else, that you think
would be a good candidate for a wider audience?

Probably best to reply to supp...@livecode.com <mailto:supp...@livecode.com>

least 3 of you good people can speak for a mere 7 minutes on your topic of

To build a Mac App, you need to have Xcode tools on your Mac. You don't need to
use them. You don't even need to know about them. They just have to be there.
If you've never installed Xcode they won't be there. See this lesson:

Beth ydych chi'n ei olygu, fy ffrind? mae'r Gymraeg yn iaith hyfryd. Gyda dim

I love how the word for "vowels" is almost entirely made up of vowels.

Which brings me to my favourite Welsh word. For microwave. Popty ping. Ok so
its colloquial and only used in the south valleys "Wenglish" but it's a great
word.

Have a wonderful Christmas/New Year/Solstice/Holiday of your choice season.
Don't let my frivolous response to this thread draw you off the straight and

Re: LC Bug Survey Metasurvey - Ranking Criteria

2021-10-28 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Lagi,

If you would like to purchase an Escrow license from us, please contact
support, supp...@livecode.com <mailto:supp...@livecode.com>. We do offer them,
they are not cheap.

This is not on topic for this thread. It is also a licensing question and not
something the list can usefully comment on. The name of this list is "how to
use LiveCode".

Mudslinging and consequences - a change to our policy

2021-10-27 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Dear List Folks,

This list is intended for users to help each other in the use of LiveCode.
Sometimes LC staff get involved and help out here also. It can be a great place
to constructively discuss improvements. It is not a place to take potshots at
each other, at LiveCode or at LiveCode staff. In the future, if a list member
is perceived to be doing this by myself or by a reasonable set of other list
members, they will be banned.

For the avoidance of doubt, by taking potshots I mean:

Accusations of untruths, lying or lack of integrity
Persistently pointing out flaws in LiveCode without any positive suggestions on
resolution
Namecalling of any kind
General rudeness - please re-read your post before sending and check it for tone

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. What everyone is not entitled to do is
express unfounded negative opinions about LiveCode and its staff on this list,
which is run by LiveCode, for LiveCode, and for the benefit of LiveCode's users.

I trust I make myself clear. This warning will not be repeated.

Warmest Regards,

Heather

ensure those that wish to receive this survey do so on Monday. I'm am out of

Re: LiveCode 10 - what are your thoughts on the new features?

2021-09-09 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Ok, I cannot help myself. Somewhere in this thread was mentioned "a couple of
carrots" and this was defined as two. It is in fact not two. It is the
equivalent amount of carrots to about 2, if the carrots are well sized but not
enormous. If you have small carrots, please chop 3. If they are huge, one is
enough. Thus, a couple of carrots. A perfectly sensible request which any
sensible husband should be able to interpret correctly.

Warmest regards to all, and should I add carrots to cheese as items that should
not arise too often for extensive discussion?

Re: Email Support level(s) clarification

2021-09-08 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Hello Curry,

What we offer in the way of support to various license types:

No license - we'll answer any presales questions you have. We won't offer any
other kind of support.

Any license holder of any kind - up and running support. Can't install? Got a
problem activating? Won't download? Happy to help, drop us an email.

Starter and Standard plan license holders - basic up and running support, plus
seeking out resources to help you via direct email. Any other support, via the
dedicated support forum. So, if there's a lesson on it I'll be happy to send
you the link. If there isn't, I'll redirect you to the support forum where your
issue can be discussed.

Email Support license holders - send us unlimited emails, on any kind of coding
question, and we'll do our best to help. We won't write your project for you,
but we will offer code samples, help debug, identify issues, look at your code
and suggest better ways to do things.

We'll update our FAQ on the website to ensure this is covered.

Best Regards,

Heather

Re: Suggestion: Non-Appbuilding Community Edition

2021-09-07 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Folks,

Thank you for all your input on this subject. I think everyone has now had an
opportunity to express opinions, discuss, and understand the changes. As Kevin
has said previously, if you have constructive ideas on how to improve our new
model, please do send them to him direct. Naturally people here have strong
feelings about LiveCode and the direction it should take in the future. I would
beg that we remain polite, helpful and constructive in expressing such
opinions.

I think everything that needs to be said has now been said. I believe it is now
time to return to the purpose of this list, supporting each other in using
LiveCode.

2021-09-02 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
I'd just like to reiterate that, please get in touch on supp...@livecode.com if
you have questions about your license or need help or don't think you can
afford the new pricing. Please also bear in mind that we are *exceptionally
busy* and while I will definitely get back to everybody, as fast as I can, it
may take me a bit longer than usual. Your patience is appreciated. If you have
emailed support once, and not heard back yet, please don't email again... it
will only slow things down further :)

Warmest Regards to all,

Heather

2021-09-01 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Brian... your price lock lapsed in January 2019. The last payment we received
was in 2018, hence it could hardly be described as having been "kept active".
Please contact support to discuss your exact licensing situation, I think you
will find it more satisfactory than you realise.

Re: Whatever happened to on-rev?

2021-08-20 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Folks, the LiveCode Hosting Service is alive and well, there is no cause
whatever for alarm. The name has changed from On Rev to LiveCode Hosting, in
line with our name change from Runtime Revolution to LiveCode (about 10 years
ago now). The domain has changed from on-rev to livecodehosting. You should
never be able to access either http://on-rev.com <http://on-rev.com/> or https
of same, this site is no longer used and redirects to livecode.com
<http://livecode.com/>. We still have the domain for legacy accounts. If you
want to learn about LiveCode Hosting, please go here:

https://livecode.com/hosting/ <https://livecode.com/hosting/>

For the avoidance of doubt, you will also not be able to access
https://livecodehosting.com <https://livecodehosting.com/> as this domain is
exclusively used to host client accounts, it is not a website. It redirects to
livecode.com/hosting <http://livecode.com/hosting>.

Over the years we have upgraded our servers several times to ensure the best
possible service. This has meant changes to account server names. We have of
course always attempted to inform account holders of these changes but I
appreciate that sometimes such emails get lost or missed. If you have or ever
had a hosting account with us and you are unsure where it is now, please do
contact support. Either supp...@livecode.com <mailto:supp...@livecode.com> or
livecodehost...@livecode.com <mailto:livecodehost...@livecode.com> will be
appropriate addresses to contact on.

I trust this clears up the matter!

Warm Regards,

Heather

Kaspersky confirmed to me that they had updated their virus definitions to

OK. The general sentiment seems to be against banning. However, if I see any
more inflammatory posts from participants in this thread, I will action bans.

Once again, the list demonstrates what a kind and forgiving place it is.

I'm going to post the list rules again later today, when I have a moment, as I
don't think I've done that for quite some time, maybe we need a refresher.

Re: Find Replace in Script Editor with cr

2021-04-09 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Oh my word. That went downhill really fast, while I was peacefully sleeping.

Folks. Never, ever, post politics on this mailing list. Do NOT exchange abuse.
This is a place to discuss LiveCode, in a helpful and friendly fashion. If
someone offends you, the best response is silence. If you must, please email me
to ask for redress.

I really truly do not want to ban anyone, all the posters in this thread have
provided interesting and useful information in the past. However, if I do not
see apologies from Sean and John Balgenorth as their next posts I will ban you
both. I'm not looking for justifications, explanations, or any continuation of
this thread. Two simple apologies and move on. For the avoidance of doubt, you
are not apologising to each other. You are apologising to the list for posts
that have offended quite a large number of people.

Thank you.

Heather

Re: OT Friendly customers....

Yikes.

I took my eye off the list for just a few hours...

Folks, please, no. None of this here. We are here to discuss something we have
in common, viz, LiveCode. I like to think that focussing on something we have
in common helps to heal divides and reduce extreme views on all sides, but
whether it does or not it is never appropriate to air these kinds of views on
this list.

My best regards to all and not another peep out of any of you on this topic.

Some sad news

2020-12-04 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Dear List Folks,

I have today received some sad news. I am told that Hermann Hoch passed away in
April this year, from a stroke. I know many of you knew him either remotely or
having met him in person at a conference. He will be missed. I met him myself
and found him to be a wonderfully warm and kind person. He could be volatile,
but I always felt it was because he cared passionately about things.

I will take what steps I can to preserve his legacy of HTML5 examples. As these
are hosted on an on-rev account we should be able to maintain it in perpetuity
for the benefit of the LiveCode Community.

LiveCode HTML5 didn't always meet his expectations or progress as fast as he
wanted it to and I do wish he could have seen our next planned release, where
HTML5 support will be a focus. He was of great benefit to this community and
shared his expertise freely.

I'm not sure what else I can say. Rest in peace hh, you will be missed :(

Heather

Re: Licencing files for LC 9.6.0 rc-2

2020-05-27 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Scroll down the list of downloads, below the fold. You will find all the test
releases including 9.6.0 rc2. We forced rc1 to the top because the current
stable release, 9.5.1, is not signed for Catalina and was causing problems for
new users.

Heather

Just to complete the options, the official email address for hosting support
these days is livecodehost...@livecode.com
<mailto:livecodehost...@livecode.com>. But as Matthias said, the old email will
still work. You can use the support form on the website. You can even email
supp...@livecode.com <mailto:supp...@livecode.com> and we'll redirect you.

Our first Community Zoom Session

2020-04-02 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Dear list folks,

I have now scheduled our first zoom meeting, open to anyone who wishes to
discuss LiveCode, share hints and tips and see a friendly face during this
period of isolation for many. I will be there in a moderation capacity, to
facilitate discussion. Panos will be joining me to help out. The actual debate,
discussion, conversation and topics is down to you guys and gals! Come along
and bring a topic you'd like to share/learn information on. Just to reiterate,
the usual list rules apply: we're talking LiveCode, we're not talking religion
or politics, and cheese should be kept to a minimum :)

To give us an idea of numbers and how to best manage the meeting, I have turned
on registration for this meeting, so you can click on the link below to
register. It would be helpful if you can do this in advance. The meeting will
be tomorrow, Friday 3rd April, at 4pm UK time, (we've just switched to Summer
Time here). To see what time that is for you, please go here:

https://www.timeanddate.com/ <https://www.timeanddate.com/>

or just click the registration link and you will be able to specify a timezone
to see what time it will be for you.

The invitation:

You are invited to a Zoom meeting.

When: Apr 3, 2020 04:00 PM London

Register in advance for this meeting:

https://zoom.us/meeting/register/v50kdeGuqjstQaRWOduQAUs31lqtQJOVdA

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information
about joining the meeting.

Warm Regards, and see you tomorrow!

Idea to keep us all connected

2020-03-25 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Dear List Folks,

These are strange and difficult times. Thanks to COVID-19 we at LiveCode Ltd.
are all now working from home, and staying together as a company via Zoom and
Slack. It's working pretty well for us I must say, at least so far. Turns out
programmers don't much mind being locked in a room alone with just a computer
and a takeaway pizza for company...

I'm sure many of you are in the same boat, quarantined or semi-quarantined and
trying to keep going without the usual levels of face to face support and
company. We've been talking about how we can all support each other during this
time, and stick together as a community.

We want to do our bit. To this end, we are planning to setup a monthly zoom
room for everyone on the list to access. You can speak to each other, find out
how everyone is doing, share your projects, tell your story. We will join these
rooms when we can. This will very much be an extension of the use-list, with
the same ground rules - we're here to talk about using LiveCode, and help each
other out with that. Obviously there will be some water cooler type chit chat
but please... no politics, religion or cheese! Let's keep it positive. It will
be community run, we will participate as and when we can but primarily this is
for you all to talk to each other. We'll work out the mechanics of it as we go
along, but it looks like zoom has the facility to split off smaller groups so
it does not become too unmanageable and everyone has a chance to participate.

On top of this we want to do more - we want to use what we have to help. We are
fully aware that people across the world are having to stay home, some are
fortunate enough to be able to keep their jobs or businesses and some have not
been so fortunate. We want to give people the opportunity to learn a new skill.
Taking a leaf from Andre's book (thanks Andre, and pun intended...), while this
crisis is ongoing we are going to make the first year of LiveCode Indy
available to brand new users from free to full price. This will be on a sliding
scale - people can pay whatever they want or can afford. No judgement. We hope
you can help us spread the word, if you know anyone who is in a tough
situation, or just someone who has always wanted to code - please pass this on
to them. We also ask you (although we know you will) to welcome new people to
the community with open arms and help them through this new journey. We would
love to hear any ideas you have on how we as a community can help more people
through coding. We are putting the campaign together now, we expect to be ready
to launch it in a few days time.

All we ask at this time is that existing customers do not cancel their
subscriptions to then go ahead and purchase a new license on the sliding scale.
It's worth noting that although the first year will be at a price determined by
the user - the second year will be at full price. If any of you are struggling
at this time and are concerned about your subscription payments please do get
in touch with me on the usual supp...@livecode.com email and we will try to
support you in the best way we can.

Thanks for reading this rather long post. Take care, stay home, stay well and
enjoy this excellent opportunity to really get to grips with LiveCode in your
solitude!

Warm Regards,

Heather

LiveCodeShare brief planned outage

Dear List Folks,

LiveCodeShare is about to be offline for an hour or so while it makes it final
move to our new server, having been repaired and updated to run on the 64bit
OS. Once this is completed, this should be the final time it has to move, and
it should resolve an observed problem with uploading large files it has
suffered from for a month or two.

Thank you for your patience, and don't worry, LiveCodeShare will be back with

Re: my message not showing up in "use-livecode"

2019-11-01 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
This sounds like it might be due to the breaking change in standalone building
described in the release notes for 9.0:

https://downloads.livecode.com/livecode/9_0_0/LiveCodeNotes-9_0_0.pdf
<https://downloads.livecode.com/livecode/9_0_0/LiveCodeNotes-9_0_0.pdf>

I quote:

The standalone builder has always needed to close the stacks it builds for
reasons pretty deeply ingrained in the code. However this causes a few
problems, for example:

values in script locals become empty
behaviors are broken when the parent script is on / in a stack which closes

As an attempt to improve this situation, the code that locks messages when
closing and opening stacks for standalone builds has been removed. This means
that where previously mainstacks would not receive openStack and closeStack
messages during standalone build, they now do. If this causes problems for your
stack, you can exit from the handler if standalone building is in progress:

on closeStack
if the mode of stack "revStandaloneProgress" > 0
then exit closeStack
end if
end closeStack

I hope this helps,

Heather

Re: Give a bug a hug

2019-10-11 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
For what its worth, I think this is the way to go. A totally community run
initiative, with a bounty on bug fixes. Someone or several someones outside of
the LiveCode team would need to take responsibility for setting up a structure.
We'd love to see bugs being fixed, by members of the community. It's kind of
the reason behind Open Source. There are plenty of bugs that would be suitable,
which don't require deep dives into the engine. Pull requests arrive in the
usual manner and get approved or fed back on in the normal scheme of things by
our team. If this could be encouraged by a bounty on fixes, funded by the
community, run by the community and entirely outside of LiveCode Ltd.'s scope,
what's not to like? Our overstretched resources would be augmented by a
community team, and the dual nature of the licensing would bear fruit in a new
and productive manner. I like it.

Over to you.

Heather

Re: Where LiveCode is Now

2019-10-04 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Dear Sean,

If you look back through that thread you will see that we did more than
apologise. We expressed regret, and we also showed willing to jump in and fix
the issue as soon as was humanly possible. Which is all anyone can do when
something goes wrong. We do not as yet have the ability to time travel in order
to prevent the issue having arisen.

It is time to move on from this thread.

Warmest regards,

Heather

Re: Where LiveCode is Now

2019-10-04 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
:) and there it is. I am happy and relieved to be able to forgive and move on.

We all want the same thing here: for LiveCode to be hugely successful. Our
official BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal, this is real actual terminology
believe it or not) as stated in our company articles is and has been for some
years to see LiveCode as number 1 on the Tiobe index. Our means for getting
there may differ, but we can at least all agree on the goal.

Onwards and upwards.

Richmond - What you wrote is not just "unpleasant". It is rude, ill informed,
offensive and disrespectful to LiveCode, our company, our amazingly dedicated

Where LiveCode is Now

2019-10-03 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Dear List Folks,

I'd like to reassure you, the team is anything but idle, and the fruits of
their labours are coming your way. I don't wish to steal Pano's thunder, but
you should look for an announcement on 9.0.5 tomorrow (all being well with the
build, which is currently undergoing final checks. Probably I've just jinxed it
by mentioning a release date, in direct contravention of my rules.) 9.0.5 has
had a fix shoehorned into it for the nasty debugger crashing that was reported
not long ago.

9.5.1 is well under way and shouldn't be long now, bringing the needed updates
for iOS among other things. I'm not going to even hint at a release date of
next week for this, its certain to cause a #fail.

9.6 is in progress with some nice new features and a first dp is not far off.
Real Soon Now :).

Yes, it has taken a little longer than usual between releases. A major reason
for this was the server move, which impacted our build bots and delayed all
test builds. Frustrating, but necessary work, and thankfully that is all done
now and everything is working smoothly again. One does not appreciate the full
complexity of these build bots until one attempts to move them intact from one
place to another.

The suggestion that all our efforts will remain with LCFM Native and never bear
fruit for LiveCode itself is based on a misconception, an idea that somehow we
are working on something other than LiveCode. We're not. Everything we are
building for LCFM Native is built with LiveCode. We cannot do it without
improving LiveCode. Those improvements will come back to the community (many
already have). Hermann... its not an infinite effort. FileMaker is very much a
finite set of code, with relatively slow changes.

I hope you will like 9.0.5, 9.5.1 and 9.6, we're looking forward to bringing
them to you.

Best Regards,

Heather

Re: Maintenance forever?

2019-08-30 Thread Heather Laine via use-livecode
Rick...I don't think you quite comprehended the issue. The raid disk failed on
the new server we were transferring 500GB of data to, during transfer.
Suboptimal. Reverse engines! Start again, lets have a new disk there please...

Anyway, that is all done now, and pretty much everything is back up and
running. There will be a few remaining tweaks.

I can confirm that LiveCodeShare is working again. If anyone does not see it,
please flush DNS, restart your router, restart computer, restart LiveCode and
try it again...

LiveCodeShare was particularly difficult as it was first created many years ago
using an old version of Revolution CGI which is not 64bit compatible.
