Re: Customer Backup with CS 4.7 and VMWare

2018-02-14 Thread Sebastian Gomez
Thank you Paul, its a good proposal.

This is a really piece to get a global solution. I think that it should be
treated like load balancer, where Cloudstack offers a simple, but useful
solution, and Cloudstack allows to integrate dedicated solutions like F5.
In fact, Cloudstack just offers a global solution, snapshots. This is a
very basic solution, but is a solution.

Would be great that Cloustack allow integration with solutions like Veeam
(p.ex). The connector (configured by cloud administrators) would allow
users to include each vm, and manage the recover from the cloudstack
console (something similar to the current VM snapshot management). And
still more difficult: what happen with deleted VMs? How to interact with
... whatever ... to recover a virtual machine that just does not exists on
CS.

But meanwhile, general solutions (like veeam) does not allow to delegate on
users their own backups.
We have some clients that uses backup agents on their virtual machines
using their own backup services (like EMC Networker).

@Simon Weller: Ceph, also sounds great...

What else?

Re: Upgrading to XenServer 7.x

2017-12-28 Thread Sebastian Gomez
Hi all.

I had a similar problem, but usign XenServer 7.2. It was a fresh
installation from scratch. The system vms where created, but them *could'nt
get the local link IP*, so the cloudstack agent never went up.

After that, I found the compatibility matrix, where its specified that the
compatible versions of XenServer are up to 7.0...
http://docs.cloudstack.apache.org/projects/cloudstack-release-notes/en/4.9.2.0/compat.html#supported-hypervisor-versions

That's the point where I'm, trying to configure them with XS 7.0, but
unfortunately XS 7.0 does not provide drivers for our Broadcom
BCM57412 10Gb network eth adapters.
Here we are, working on how to add the drivers...

Good luck!

Re: Migrating VMs from AWS to CloudStack

2017-09-07 Thread Sebastian Gomez
Puppet/Chef/Ansible will not help you to optimize the current task of
migrating your servers from AWS to CS, but will reduce you if you have to
do it again in the future. If you have to re-deploy the servers perhaps you
can think about it. Automatic setup also reduces operative tasks, reduces
human error factor, increases QoS, and of course, if you fail, you will do
it in a big way ;)

We use Scalr over AWS and Cloudstack with VMware, and once you have defined
your services with Scalr is easy to re-deploy them on the private cloud, or
on any public cloud providers like AWS, GCE or Azure.

But if you finally find a good way to do it, please don't forget sharing it!

Good luck!

Re: cloud-set-guest-password working with systemctl

2017-08-28 Thread Sebastian Gomez
I had the same problem like Marc and I could not resolve it on Ubuntu 16.04.
I followed the cloudstack steps to set it up, but the script is not running
well on our environment.

If I execute the script from command line, it works fine. During the boot
process, there is any problem on systemd and DHCP conjunction, and VR is
not reachable to reply this request.

On the other hand, I found many different versions of this OLD script, and
I remember that we had to use other community version also for Ubuntu
14.04. I noticed that this is a very old script, and has not been modified
for years.
As you proposed, I'm trying to do it via cloud-init. Just landed from
holidays I will finish this integration.

To do a so simply task like setting up a simple template is becoming a
nightmare, so *I would like to know how people *is setting Ubuntu templates
up?
- SSL key pairs? would be a good way, but Cloudstack 4.9.2 does not allow
to manage SSL key pairs using the GUI, only via API, so this is not a way
for not advanced users.
- Default user/password?

I can't believe that we are the only two buddies with this problem.

Regards.

Re: some issues after upgrade cloudstack to 4.9.2

2017-06-22 Thread Sebastian Gomez
The problem over upload from local and the problem with the console proxy
were not a problem with cloudstack, was a problem of our network
configuration.

As I told before, we have public IPs and private IPs routed into the
backbone network, so used as "public" IPs also, both mixed.
The systemvm since 4.6 has a script /etc/init.d/cloud-early-config which
now creates routes for private networks (10.x, 172.16.x, 192.168.x) if the
public network is really public. In our case it was a problem, because the
public network for the cloud service is really public, but our
WorkingStations have private IPs (10.x). In this case, when the console
proxy starts, there is a new route for 10.x network over the management
interface, and the connection can't be stablished. The traffic from our
stations comes from public interface and return through the management
network (and is not routed).

We solved the problem tunning this script, commenting the line "ip route
add 10.0.0.0/8 via $LOCAL_GW".

About the problem with upload from local, the reason is that we have not
well passed the certificates on our PRE environment, where we have tested
the upgrade.

Finally we have successfully executed the upgrade process, but with more
work than just the public process... But really, if everything were easy,
life would be boring!

Regads.

Re: Cloud Utilization

2017-06-22 Thread Sebastian Gomez
First of all, what means "instance utilization is 0%", just kernel
processes and maintenance tasks can increase CPU usage during this period.
No utilization means no logins?

I don't know any service/soft that do it, but you can do it yourself:

For example:
You can easily develop a script to be executed daily on each server to
detect if there is or not usage (whatever it means), and register into a
file (p.e. a counter). One the counter reaches the maximum (p.e. 3 days),
shutdown itself.
For other side, develop a script in other server to make queries on the
cloud database or cloud usage database to ask for instances which have more
than maximum days without being powered on, and call the API method to
destroy them.

Thinking about it I'm sure that people will find better ways to do it.
If you build the solution, please, consider sharing it!

Good luck.

Re: Retiring OLD Primary Storage - Dealing with System VMs and (assumed) Snapshot related artifacts

2017-06-09 Thread Sebastian Gomez
Hi David,

Perhaps could help you:
He have 4.5.2, and recently have migrated the storage hardware, and so we
had to migrate the primary storages to the new ones.

I had to move manually some volumes and VMs with snapshots, and I had to
update manually the cloudstack database to inform the new volume locations.

select id,name,pool_id,folder,path,chain_info from volumes where removed is
null and name in ('');

Get the vol ID to be updated

update volumes set pool_id=,
last_pool_id=pool_id,chain_info='', folder='',
path='' where id =;

We use VMware, so I can't say you the correct format for Xen. Check the
values from other migrated volumes to see correct format for chain_info and
folder.

Cloudstack 4.9.2, Error on routes on systemvm

2017-06-09 Thread Sebastian Gomez
Hi all,

We are trying to upgrade our PRE environment from 4.5.2 to 4.9.2.0 to check
the behaviour and apply on our production environment.

I have noticed two problems on the new installation, one of them is that I
can't access the VMs console via the console proxy VM (the other will
arrive on other request ;)

Analyzing the problem I noticed that a new routes are added on systemvm,
for private networks:

root@s-262-VM:~# route -n
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric RefUse
Iface
0.0.0.0 147.148.149.225 0.0.0.0 UG0 00
eth2
*10.0.0.0192.168.100.2 255.0.0.0 UG0 00
eth1*
147.148.149.224 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.224 U 0 00
eth2
*172.16.0.0 192.168.100.2 255.240.0.0 UG0 00
eth1*
*192.168.0.0 192.168.100.2 255.255.0.0 UG0 00
eth1*
192.168.100.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 0 00 eth1
192.168.101.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 0 00 eth3

(Public IPs are not real)

And searching into the systemvm scripts I realized that there is a script
"/etc/init.d/*cloud-early-config*" which is responsible of those new
routes, and more concretely, on the funciont
"setup_system_rfc1918_internal", that is called when setting the Console
proxy and Secondary Storage VM.

setup_system_rfc1918_internal() {
  public_ip=`getPublicIp`
*  echo "$public_ip" | grep -E
"^((127\.)|(10\.)|(172\.1[6-9]\.)|(172\.2[0-9]\.)|(172\.3[0-1]\.)|(192\.168\.))"*
  if [ "$?" == "0" ]; then
log_it "Not setting up route of RFC1918 space to $LOCAL_GW befause
$public_ip is RFC1918."
  else
log_it "Setting up route of RFC1918 space to $LOCAL_GW"
 # Setup general route for RFC 1918 space, as otherwise it will be sent
to
 # the public gateway and not work
 # More specific routes that may be set have preference over this
generic route.
ip route add 10.0.0.0/8 via $LOCAL_GW
ip route add 172.16.0.0/12 via $LOCAL_GW
ip route add 192.168.0.0/16 via $LOCAL_GW
  fi
}

The problem on our environment is that we use real public IPs for public
network, but we use private addresses for internal use (10.x.0.0/16). In
this case, the "if" statement will enter into the "else" block, and the
private routes are added, one of them is 10.0.0.0/8, that includes our
private "public" network (10.x.0.0/16).

When I try to access the VM console, the console proxy is redirecting my
network traffic through the management network, and in consecuense I can't
reach the console due the routing rule:
10.0.0.0192.168.100.2 255.0.0.0 UG0 00 eth1

Dones anyone know how to avoid this behaviour?

Thanks in advanced.

Sebastián Gómez

Re: some issues after upgrade cloudstack to 4.9.2

2017-05-29 Thread Sebastian Gomez
Finally found how to fix-it persistent-ly:

*1. Upgrade tomcat version*

Following the clue from that thread:

https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CLOUDSTACK-7907

   - wget https://archive.apache.org/dist/tomcat/tomcat-6/v6.0.53/bin/
   apache-tomcat-6.0.53.tar.gz
   - tar --directory /opt -xzf apache-tomcat-6.0.53.tar.gz
   - mv /usr/share/tomcat6/lib /usr/share/tomcat6/lib.old
   - mv /usr/share/tomcat6/bin /usr/share/tomcat6/bin.old
   - ln -s /opt/apache-tomcat-6.0.53/lib /usr/share/tomcat6/lib

   - service cloudstack-management restart

*2. Fix systemvm.iso*

Fix the ISO so it creates the upload directory when a new SSVM is created:

cd /usr/share/cloudstack-common/vms/
mkdir tmp
mount -o loop systemvm.iso tmp
cp -rp tmp /tmp/cloud
umount tmp
rmdir tmp

cd /tmp/cloud/
mkdir aux
cd aux
tar xzvf ../cloud-scripts.tgz
mkdir var/www/html/upload
rm -f ../cloud-scripts.tgz
tar czvf ../cloud-scripts.tgz *
cd ..
rm -rf aux
cd ..
mkisofs -o new_systemvm.iso -J -R cloud/*
rm -rf cloud/

mv /usr/share/cloudstack-common/vms/systemvm.iso
/usr/share/cloudstack-common/vms/systemvm.iso.orig
mv new_systemvm.iso /usr/share/cloudstack-common/vms/systemvm.iso

Destroy the SSVM and wait for the new to be created.

SSH it and check that /var/www/html/upload dir is created.
Check also that you can upload from local.

Regards.

Re: some issues after upgrade cloudstack to 4.9.2

2017-05-27 Thread Sebastian Gomez
Hello all!

(I work with Marc)

Thanks Ilya:

About the Template upload from local-->

- I installed the lastest tomcat 6 stable release, but the problem was not
solved.
- I fixed the problem creating the /var/www/html/public dir at the SSVM and
it worked.

But this change will be lost when the SSVM is destroyed and another new is
created.
Is an issue on the systemvm?

I can't believe that we are the only one that have this issue, so, I think
that during our upgrade from 4.5 something has been lost.

Any recomendations?

Thanks again.

Re: Choosing Between Alternate Primary Storages

2017-05-08 Thread Sebastian Gomez
If I have understood correctly:

Tag each primary storage (p.e. SSD and NLSAS), then create a different
service offering for each storage tag (when you create a Service offering -
cpu, mem, etc.- you can set the related storage tag, use SSD for one and
NLSAS for the other).
When you create the MV, the service offering will determine the storage
tier using the storage tag.

Re: Static NAT disconnected ( Windows VM )

2017-05-08 Thread Sebastian Gomez
We have problems like that with cloudstack and vmware when the nic driver
was e1000 instead vmxnet3.
We changed the nic driver to vmxnet3 (on the template) and the problem was
solved (for the new virtual machines).

Re: Support for vSphere 9

2017-01-17 Thread Sebastian Gomez
Finally I found the info on the Cloudstack site for the 4.9.2 version, as
you said:

http://docs.cloudstack.apache.org/projects/cloudstack-release-notes/en/4.9.2.0/compat.html#supported-hypervisor-versions

I have been looking for that info during last weeks, and I could not find
that via Google... Again, my mistake, I suppose.

Any way, thank you for your support and your time.

Hi Paul,

Thanks a lot for the answer.
For the ACS people, may be would be a good idea to reference this because
many people are planning to upgrade vSphere and will be afraid about this.

Thanks again.
We will wait for those versions.

Is there any official plan for Cloudstack to support vSphere 9?

Thanks in advance.

Re: S3 secondary storage performance considerations

2016-05-01 Thread Sebastian Gomez
Not just about any of your questions, but one advice:

If you are talking about using AWS S3 as backend storage, is highly
recommendable that you consider the storage network traffic cost. I have
faced some cases, where the prize of the network traffic of out-coming data
(from AWS to Internet) is greater than the cost of the infrastructures
itself. In those cases we recommended to place strategic servers on AWS to
reduce the amount of out-coming network traffic.

Re: High importance Suggest backup tool

2016-04-21 Thread Sebastian Gomez
We use EMC VBA wich make an incremental for-ever backup at storage level.
It has an appliance that allows to restore the full VM or file level.
We have VMware as hypervisor, I don't know if there is support for
xenserver.

cloudstack-agent 4.5 problem with cloudbr bridges

2016-01-28 Thread Sebastian Gomez
Hi all,

I have been working with cloudstack and vmware for more than 3 years, and
now I would like to test it with KVM, but I have problems with the bridges
names.

Summarizing, when I add the KVM host on cloudstack, the cloudstack agent
creates a new bridge a part of the cloudbr0 and cloudbr1 and gets an error
trying to add the interface associated with the public network VLAN.

Extended:

I followed many how-tos, each different, and none of them took me to solve
the problem.

I want to configure the KVM and I have these networks:

172.16.1.0/24 for management traffic, VLAN 554
10.4.0.0/24 for public traffic, VLAN 83
10.254.0.0/24 for Guest NW, VLANs [555 - 569]

Storage NFS is defined under management NW (172.16.1.0/24).

The KVM host have 2 physical interfaces, configured as a bonding -rr (the
switch is configured to allow bonding). This is the interface bond0.

Over it I created:
- bond0.554 is a virtual interface, configured with the management VLAN
(554)
- bond0.83 is a virtual interface, configured with the public VLAN (83)

And over them, 2 bridges as Cloudstack docs says:
- cloudbr0 is going to host management traffic and
- cloudbr1 is going to host public and guest traffic.

Results in:
[root@gary1 network-scripts]# brctl show
bridge name bridge id STP enabled interfaces
br0 8000.180373f5a953 no bond0.197
cloudbr08000.180373f5a953 no bond0.554
cloudbr18000.180373f5a953 no bond0.83

The routes are:
[root@gary1 network-scripts]# route -n
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric RefUse
Iface
147.83.197.00.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 0 00 br0
10.4.82.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 0 00
cloudbr1
172.16.1.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 0 00
cloudbr0
192.168.122.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 0 00
virbr0
0.0.0.0 147.83.197.10.0.0.0 UG0 00 br0

And I can ping other elements into each network.

Now, with the agent fresh installed (free of configurations), I add the
host on cloudstack (4.5.2), and the process stop with an error informing
that the iface "bond0.83" can't be attached to a new bridge that it created
"brbond0-83".

I can see on the host that there is a new bridge called "brbond0-83",
associated with NO interfaces:

[root@gary1 network-scripts]# brctl show
bridge name bridge id STP enabled interfaces
br0 8000.180373f5a953 no bond0.197
brbond0-83 8000. no
cloud0 8000.fe00a9fe00b5 no
cloudbr08000.180373f5a953 no bond0.554
cloudbr18000.180373f5a953 no bond0.83
virbr0 8000.525400244916 yes virbr0-nic

Now, I manually detach bond0.83 from cloudbr1 and attach it to the new
created bridge (brbond0-83), and the process continues.

The problem is that if I restart the server, the agent cannot re-attach the
iface again, I have to do it by hand (not good). Also, if I configure the
system not to attach bond0.83 to the bridge, it generates an error about
that the network is not found...

On the cloudstack management service, I defined two physical networks:

Physical networkTraffic types KVM Traffic label
cloudbr0-CS-MGMTManagement cloudbr0
cloudbr1-CS-PUB-GUEST Public, Guest cloudbr1

My question is:

Why cloudstack creates a new bridge?

Thanks in advanced.

Forcing the master host in a cluster to reboot possible issue that may occur

2014-05-07 Thread Juan Gomez
Hi everyone,

So right now we have the master host in our cluster freeze, the only solution
we see to getting it back to function is to force reboot it. But We are afraid
that if we force reboot it the other hosts in the cluster won't know which is
the master in the cluster and the whole cluster will be in an outage. So what
do you recommend that we do or do you think that forcing to reboot the host
won't cause any additional issues in the infrastructure?

My organization uses Zenoss as our monitoring solution. We leverage the good,
but horribly documented, API to automate the addition/deletion of new
VM’s/devices. Minimizing the management requirements of the monitoring
solution. Aside from Zenoss, Zabbix, Nagios, and Pandora are all good choices.
Each, has their pro’s and con’s.

You’re always going to face management problems in a public cloud. one quick
and dirty way to ensure easy management would be to enable SNMP polling on all
of your templates and monitor your entire public block. It’s lazy, but it would
minimize the time need to manage new VM’s in your monitoring solution.

Subject: Custom billing Application using CloudStack API

Hi everyone

I work for a company name Kumo (www.kumo.com.co). We are one of the most
important public clouds in Colombia, all of our platforms are based on
cloudstack and Cloud business portal. Right now we have a very complex
problem because we are not being able to bill our costumers automatically.
This is because all of our costumers have different prices for the same
kind of product or VM, this is due to commercial issues and negotiations
that are necessary to do in the colombian market. So we want to build a
billing web application using the cloudstack API in order to create bills
for costumers in an automatically way and also send alerts and take actions
to suspend services if payments are not being received. Does anyone know
examples of this kind of application using the cloudstack API, or have any
insights on how we should approach this problem.

Thank you for your help and pardon my bad spelling.

Hi Juan,

My experience is merely a case of looking on the Hostbill website I'm
afraid. I have a feeling that the solution may be subject to some
limitations - I'm not sure how it handles resources that aren't originally
provisioned by the Hostbill interface, and there's a noticeable lack of
info on provisioning and billing for VPCs and advanced networking but
perhaps not an issue for you. The demos I've seen seem to be focussed on
using Cloudstack as a basic VPS hosting platform. Unfortunately that's
about the extent of the insight I can offer. Search for Hostbill
Cloudstack and you'll find a few demos with screenshots on their site.

If anyone has looked into this in greater detail, I too would be keen to
hear about your experiences.

Adrian
