I have a solution to the specific problem, based on Michael D. Setzer II's
suggestion (see below):

I was able to try this on a different system, Win 7 64-bit, and there was no
crash. I'll try a clean uninstall/reinstall on the XP system, and see if I

Linux Wary 5.1.2. The printer itself is a Brother DCP7030 whose linux
