Hi Andreas and Tom,

It was good to see that someone actually responded to the question that was
asked about LO. I don't make much use of Writer so I have little but civility
to contribute. I have *reflowed* your messages as quoted below my signature.

I would think that for the casual user of Writer who mostly uses it as a text
document reader like the original poster said describes his usage of LO, it
makes little difference which version of LO one uses.

The diatribe that occurred against the original poster's signature block is
regrettable and in my opinion unwarranted. While I'm convinced that Islam is in
error and Christianity is true, I can pray for the followers of Islam and for
the peace of Jerusalem.

Hi :)

errr, at least wrt 3.5 - i'm not sure about trolls.

I think as a general rule the later versions of a branch tend to be more
reliable in terms of their functionality and probably more stable too (although
i've never had LO out-right crash or anything). So for the 3.5 branch the
3.5.4 was probably more stable and reliable than the 3.5.0. With the 4.2
branch hopefully it's become smoother and more reliable with each "Service
Pack", such that 4.2.1 was a bit better, 4.2.2 quite a bit better, 4.2.3 even
better and with the 4.2.5 being nearly the best. The best version in the 4.2
branch 'should be' the 4.2.6 but sometimes branches don't bother to go that far
because the x.x.5 was plenty "good enough" (or other reasons for moving onto a
newer branch).

The advantage with newer branches 'should be' that they just have better
functionality, greater compatibility with the ever-changing MS formats.
Although they are initially "stable" (using the devs definition of the word -
errr and extra-ordinarily so, especially when compared to pretty much any other
software apparently) some older functionality may have temporarily been
inadvertently broken. Hopefully the "code clean-up" has significantly reduced
the amount of unexpected breakages of completely unrelated things.

So the 4.3.6 should be about as stable and reliable as the 4.2.6 and the 4.4.6.
There is not much point in trying out the earlier releases of any branch, just
skip straight to the one with the highest 3rd digit.

However what 'should be' and "what really is" are often completely opposite
from each other in so many areas of life. So i would be fairly interested in
Nasrin's opinions about how closely the last few branches seem to have followed
that "general rule", especially "with
regards to" ( = wrt ) "accessibility issues" such as screen-readers.

There is a separate mailing list for accessibility issues but it's so inactive
that i doubt anyone is still on it and it may have even been closed down a few
years ago without me noticing it being stopped. I suspect that a lot of people
moved to Apache Open Office when IBM donated it's fork of OO.o to AOO.
OpenOffice is such a close relative of LibreOffice nowadays that it doesn't
make a huge difference which is being used imo.

I think the main thing creating a problem for "what should be" is Java and
Base. If they can be avoided then maybe the "general rule" is fairly valid.
With either Base or Java being used then it becomes a lot less clear, unless
things have changed radically in the last couple of years.

Tom :)

I don't see an automatic method, but there is a
manual techniques that is quite straightforward.

o Either: place the cursor on the first footnote
anchor, so that it changes from I-beam to a hand,
and go to right-click | Footnote/Endnote... .
o Or: place the cursor immediately to the left of
the first footnote anchor and go to Edit | Footnote/Endnote... .
o In the Edit Footnote/Endnote dialogue, the
Numbering type is shown as Character; change this to Automatic.
o *Don't* click OK, but instead click the
right-arrow at bottom right to move to the next footnote anchor.

o Repeat the process, clicking Automatic and the right-arrow each time.
o When the right-arrow becomes greyed out, you
have come to the end of the footnote anchors; click OK.

o The label in the footnote now labelled "D" has
different format from the others, as it has a
different paragraph style. Open the Styles and
Formatting window and correct this.

o The footnotes are now labelled A, B, C, etc. If
you want to change this - perhaps to the
conventional 1, 2, 3, etc. - go to Tools |
Footnotes/Endnotes... | Footnotes | AutoNumbering
| Numbering and make your choice.

I trust this helps.

[libreoffice-users] Re: LibreOffice Base and MySQL

2016-01-20 Thread Andreas Säger
When using HSQL (which is less powerful than MySQL) command CREATE TEXT
TABLE "Foo"(...) prepares a table "Foo" with fields and indices just
like a regular data table. A second command SET TABLE "Foo"... links the
text table "Foo" to a particular text file.
If the linked text table and the underlying csv and the target table
share the same structure with same data types in same order of columns,
I can simply drag the text table icon over the icon of the regular data
table and confirmt the import dialog without further adjustments.
If this precondition is not met or when data type conversions are needed
(e.g. text with German comma decimals and D.M.Y dates) then I create a
view to return all fields with the right types in right order and drag
the view over the data table. HSQL only accepts text data with point
decimals and ISO date/times.
With the right setup it is just a simple drag operation with no
spreadsheet involved. The setup is development work because it requires
understanding simple data types. Same problem with csv to spreadsheet
imports which will fail in most cases when you ignore the import options
because you don't understand them.

Hello again,
Can you use the LOAD DATA command under the mysql command client? You should
be able to fire this command also under phpmyadmin.
like so...
-
LOAD DATA INFILE "/directory/.../filename.csv"
REPLACE
INTO TABLE table1
FIELDS ENCLOSED BY '"' TERMINATED BY ','
LINES TERMINATED BY '\n'
IGNORE 1 LINES
;
-
The first line would contain the names of the columns, therefore "IGNORE 1
LINES",
REPLACE means that if you load the data into an already existing table, tuples
which already exist will be overwritten.
LOAD DATA is described in more detail in the MySQL documentation.

Re: [libreoffice-users] LibreOffice Base and MySQL

2016-01-20 Thread Paul D. Mirowsky

Hello

It doesn't really look like you are importing into Base as much as MySQL.
Have you tried this...

In phpMyAdmin, click the table, and then click the Import tab at the
top of the page.

Browse and open the csv file. Leave the charset as-is. Uncheck partial
import unless you have a HUGE dataset (or slow server). The format
should already have selected “CSV” after selecting your file, if not
then select it (not using LOAD DATA). If you want to clear the whole
table before importing, check “Replace table data with file”.
Optionally check “Ignore duplicate rows” if you think you have
duplicates in the CSV file. Now the important part, set the next four
fields to these values:

|Fields terminated by:,Fields enclosed by:“Fields escaped by:\Lines
terminated by:auto|

Currently these match the defaults except for “Fields terminated by”,
which defaults to a semicolon.

Now click the Go button, and it should run successfully.

From:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/9734486/importing-a-csv-into-phpmyadmin

Open your CSV to be sure that it matches these rules.

I haven't done this myself, hope this helps though.

with Base for over a week now and can not believe this is so difficult
to do so I'm hoping some other Base users might have cracked this one!!

My OpSys is PClinuxOS - 32-bit and MySQL is ver 5.1.73. Everything is
running on localhost.

My CSV file is in Calc and has 2600 rows and 78 cols. I save it as a
CSV file which is 717.8Kb in size. Field Names are in row 1.

I have tried many times with phpMyAdmin with no luck and today I
installed MySQL Workbench - also no luck.

In all cases I get the error ...

MySQL said: Documentation
#1064 - You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that
corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use
near 'varchar(10), `NULL` varchar(10), `NULL` varchar(10), `NULL`
varchar(21), `NULL` ' at line 1

MyAdmin seems to stop after only 38 fields and the error does not show
the field names in the error. Also it is not MY SQL syntax it is
MyAdmin's syntax!!

Workbench says - ERROR 1064 (42000) at line 1: You have an error in
your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL
server version for the right syntax to use near
'RecordID,Status,StatusGraphic,Title,PrefFirstName,FirstName,LastName,Maiden/Form'
at line 1

Operation failed with exitcode 1.

Can anyone help me out please. I'm NOT a Database expert just a user
and must get this DB up and running again ASAP!!

Many, many thanks

[libreoffice-users] Re: LibreOffice Base and MySQL

2016-01-20 Thread Andreas Säger
How can anybody solve any csv related problem without knowing anything about
the actual content?

4 different lines of perfectly valid and commonly used csv data:

1234.98;2014-12-22
1.234,98;22 Dez 2014
1234.98;12/22/14
1234.98;22/12/14

Each line carries the exact same information. I could add a thousand more
different lines with the exact same values without leaving the conventions
of valid csv.

Good morning All

It's been a while.

I am trying to use 4 rows on a calc sheet as a footer, in addition to a
header row. Can only see how to use rows as a header.

Any hints please?

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: question about the best version of libreoffice:

2016-01-20 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
+1
errr, at least wrt 3.5 - i'm not sure about trolls.

I think as a general rule the later versions of a branch tend to be
more reliable in terms of their functionality and probably more stable
too (although i've never had LO out-right crash or anything). So for
the 3.5 branch the 3.5.4 was probably more stable and reliable than
the 3.5.0. With the 4.2 branch hopefully it's become smoother and
more reliable with each "Service Pack", such that 4.2.1 was a bit
better, 4.2.2 quite a bit better, 4.2.3 even better and with the 4.2.5
being nearly the best. The best version in the 4.2 branch 'should be'
the 4.2.6 but sometimes branches don't bother to go that far because
the x.x.5 was plenty "good enough" (or other reasons for moving onto a
newer branch).

The advantage with newer branches 'should be' that they just have
better functionality, greater compatibility with the ever-changing MS
formats. Although they are initially "stable" (using the devs
definition of the word - errr and extra-ordinarily so, especially when
compared to pretty much any other software apparently) some older
functionality may have temporarily been inadvertently broken.
Hopefully the "code clean-up" has significantly reduced the amount of
unexpected breakages of completely unrelated things.

So the 4.3.6 should be about as stable and reliable as the 4.2.6 and
the 4.4.6. There is not much point in trying out the earlier releases
of any branch, just skip straight to the one with the highest 3rd
digit.

However what 'should be' and "what really is" are often completely
opposite from each other in so many areas of life. So i would be
fairly interested in Nasrin's opinions about how closely the last few
branches seem to have followed that "general rule", especially "with
regards to" ( = wrt ) "accessibility issues" such as screen-readers.

There is a separate mailing list for accessibility issues but it's so
inactive that i doubt anyone is still on it and it may have even been
closed down a few years ago without me noticing it being stopped. I
suspect that a lot of people moved to Apache Open Office when IBM
donated it's fork of OO.o to AOO. OpenOffice is such a close relative
of LibreOffice nowadays that it doesn't make a huge difference which
is being used imo.

I think the main thing creating a problem for "what should be" is Java
and Base. If they can be avoided then maybe the "general rule" is
fairly valid. With either Base or Java being used then it becomes a
lot less clear, unless things have changed radically in the last
couple of years.

Regards from
Tom :)

You need Format > Cells > Numbers: Format code =

With this, 0.1 appears as "" and 0.6 as "0001".

[He wants 0.1 to appear as "1000" and 0.6 as "6000".

[The first response he received is the most simple. Calc has no method to
directly format numbers the way he wants them.

[He stated that he wants the trigonometric function values unchanged (as I

DISPLAYED without the decimal point character. Hiding the true value column and
displaying with format "" a column with values ten thousand times the true
value is by far his best solution as I see it. -- jl]

For more on this, see

the fractional part of the number. -- jl]

I did something similar recently. You might succeed if you change the
CSV options: line separator LF, enclose strings in ", field separator ;

If I remember rightly, it did not cope well with field separator ,

Re: [libreoffice-users] LibreOffice Base and MySQL

2016-01-20 Thread Heinrich Stoellinger

Hello Ian,
I am somewhat puzzled by the error message you get:
It seems to me that you are defining multiple columns with the name `NULL`.
To MY knowledge column names should be unique withing one table. Also NULL is
used to specify whether the value of a column may be NULL (i.e. "unknown") or
not - with NULL (=yes) as the default. So if you don't allow a value to be
NULL you have to say (e.g.) colName integer not null default 0...
Maybe you could send me your table definition and I will have a look at it.

[libreoffice-users] LibreOffice Base and MySQL

2016-01-20 Thread Ian Whitfield

Hi All

I have been trying to import a CSV file from Calc into MySQL to run with
Base for over a week now and can not believe this is so difficult to do
so I'm hoping some other Base users might have cracked this one!!

My OpSys is PClinuxOS - 32-bit and MySQL is ver 5.1.73. Everything is
running on localhost.

My CSV file is in Calc and has 2600 rows and 78 cols. I save it as a CSV
file which is 717.8Kb in size.

Workbench says - ERROR 1064 (42000) at line 1: You have an error in your
SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server
version for the right syntax to use near
'RecordID,Status,StatusGraphic,Title,PrefFirstName,FirstName,LastName,Maiden/Form'
at line 1

Operation failed with exitcode 1.

Can anyone help me out please. I'm NOT a Database expert just a user and
must get this DB up and running again ASAP!!

Many, many thanks

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: R1C1 reference style with LibreOffice

2016-01-20 Thread Cley Faye
If it's only a matter of rewriting R1C1 in A1 notations, a simple function
could read the Rx and put the appropriate letter, then remove the C.
If you want to reference cells from the basic code, functions alreay exist
to get cells from their numeric coordinates, as said by others.
I think this cover most cases; also know that you can use the INDIRECT()
function directly in a cell with the R1C1 notation.

That isn't what I want- the wrong answer.

No, it *is* what you want. Once you have multiplied by 1, your
values will (presumably) have no fractional parts, so the rounding
described as above, though accurate, will not be relevant. *Original*
figures of 0.1000 and 0.6000 will appear, when multiplied, as 1000
and 6000; it's only original figures of 0.1 and 0.6 (if they
existed) that would appear, rounded, as and 0001.

As history and recent events have proven, those who believe in religion
are all too often the cause of violence. When you believe in a
delusion, you can use it to justify anything, up to and including the
recent murders committed in "God's" name. Religion is a cancer this
world can well do without.

If "believers" kept their delusions to themselves, this world would be a
much better place.

[libreoffice-users] footnotes numbering problem

2016-01-20 Thread Wojciech Górnaś

Hi,
In this example document, each footnote number was inserted manually in
LibreOffice Writer. Now, is there a way to convert them all to
automatically, sequentially numbered footnotes? I tried to do this in MS
Word (2007), but to no avail. For some reason Word doesn't even
recognize the footnote references.

Thank you in advance

Database admins don't use spreadsheets. MySQL can do this very well. Of
course, csv is not a file format. It is mere convention with millions of
different flavours.

Ian,

I would suggest opening up your Calc created CSV in a normal text
editor, to see what it "really" looks like. Only in this way will you be
able to choose the right options to import the data into mysql.

As Andreas has rightly said, you don't actually need a graphical tool to
import CSV files into mysql - the official mysql technical
documentation, if you care to read it, is really quite good in this
respect :

http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.7/en/load-data.html

Also, this tutorial gives some very handy examples of how to import CSV
files into mysql :

http://www.mysqltutorial.org/import-csv-file-mysql-table/

The error messages you are seeing seem to indicate that the data you are
trying to input doesn't correspond to the definition of that data which
is set in the database.
