I just noticed that the subject line I chose is highly misleading!
I was using *Writer*, not Word. The brainwashing during my years as a
Microsoft user still clearly hasn't worn off.
@Tom - Salix is a lot easier than Slackware, so even a newbie like myself
can use it without too many problems!
Found the solution in a non-intuitive place.
Go to Tools Options LibreOffice View
This setting is controlled by the Selection Transparency option.
