The 9.04 was not an LTS release and might not be supported anymore. That is
possibly why you are having trouble accessing the repositories to install

~/.libreoffice/3/user/gallery/
How does one change that directory to simply $HOME? Thanks!
(note: simply saving in $HOME does not work, upon closing and
reopening LO the export directory reverts to the gallery)

directory of the document.
Looking deeper, a new untitled document tries to export to gallery.
A saved document or previously opened document that is opened saves the
pdf to the directory of the document by default.
