[libreoffice-users] page break shows in middle of page

2012-02-22 Thread jaschulz
I have attached a short file that illustrates the problem. The troublesome
page break shows in the middle of page three. Deleting it, causes the next
page to lose its footer. None of this makes any sense to me.

[libreoffice-users] Libreoffice browser plugin

2012-02-22 Thread John Thompson
Conspicuously absent from the document types supported by the
libreoffice browser plugin are any of the Microsoft Office document
types. For those of us using an operating system on which Microsoft
Office is not natively supported, this means saving documents of
these types and opening them in a separate libreoffice window.

Would it be possible for the libreoffice browser plugin to support
the full range of document types that libreoffice itself can handle?

[libreoffice-users] Impress AutoLayout height in LO

2012-02-22 Thread Body500
Hi all,
I've noticed something annoying with AutoLayout objects in Impress. This is
what I did:

1. create an empty presentation and edit the slide master
2. edit the height of the main AutoLayout text box (the one that usually
contains the main content)
3. Make sure that the text box is not set to auto size, either under
text... or under size and position
4. close master view

Now if I choose a layout that displays this AutLayout area, the height of it
is set to whatever I made it be and all is fine. Here's the problem. I now
save this document and close it. When I open it again the AutoLayout is
still the same as before I closed it, but if I change the layout the height
of the AutoLayout goes back to what it was before I changed it in the
master. If I now open the master view I see that indeed the master has also
changed.

I can change the slide master again and repeat the whole process but nothing
fixes this. I've tried locking the size and position of the text box but
that is ignored. I've flipped all sorts of checkboxes but haven't found a
solution yet.

All this is happening in LO 3.5.0 rc3 but also happened in the 3.4.5
version. I haven't tried older versions. Running win7 64-bit.

Anyone else see this happen, and if so is there a fix (I'm assuming it's a
feature and not a bug).

[libreoffice-users] Fw: [MariaDB Announce] SkySQL MariaDB: Solutions Day for the MySQL® Database

2012-02-22 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
MariaDb is a drop-in replacement for MySql in the same way that LibreOffice is
a drop-in replacement for MySql and for similar reasons (ie many of the devs
were unhappy with Oracle's 'management')

I lurk on their lists sometimes and thought that the various people working on
LibreOffice Base in various different mailing lists might be interested to know
of the event they have planned.

I'm not on the LO design list so CC me or the other lists in on
discussions/comments if you want.

Hi :)
Superb! Nicely done :)

I think the UserProfile guide goes into detail about copying back some of
the old folders so that you can pin-point where the error was and get back
some of your old settings but it might be easier to ignore that and just
re-download newer Extensions that are more likely to be compatible and hunt
through

Tools - Options - Appearance

and the rest to get things back the way you prefer.
Congrats, thanks and regards from

Re: [libreoffice-users] corrupt .odt file

2012-02-22 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
I think start by deleting the ~lock file, or at least hide it in a zip-file you
make for it.  Then just see how your file looks and if it's close enough to
easily re-create the missing data (if there is anything missing).

When you say you have no back-up do have have a copy on usb-stick, an emailed
copy or some other computer or network-share?  Sometimes people don't realise
that they have backed something up in that way and don't think of them as
back-ups as it's not formal and deliberate.  'Accidental' back-ups are just as
good tho! :)

Also check the
Tools - Options - Paths
to see where LO might be saving back-ups if you have enabled that option.
Regards from
Tom :)

Re: [libreoffice-users] corrupt .odt file

2012-02-22 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Hmm, something else is to make a copy of the .odt and rename it's file-ending
from .odt to .zip and then double-click to open it in an archive manager.
Inside there the file
contents.xml
might contain a lot of the data.  It's easier to read in non-Windows platforms
or use a decent text-editor such as Notepad++ or SciTe or something.  Notepad
can't colour-code the tags and things which makes it difficult to separate the
tags from the contents visually.  Most other platforms have a decent
text-editor by default.

Look for the words Plain text in the status-bar and click on it or hunt in
the View menu for an option to display the file as html, or css, or xml
instead of viewing as plain text.
Regards from
Tom :)

Suggest you copy these files to another directory.
Try opening these copied files using LO.
Also try using abiword.
Using a text editor such as jedit, which is able to open odt files

Odd, I don't see any bug reports that say that graphics images are
dropped while creating a DOCX file. I will see if I can pair down the

I just had to deal with a .docx file this morning that was sent to me
for editing. I could never do what I did with the last version of OOo
that I had. Also, I never did get a newer version of MSO beyond 2003.

If I did not have LO, I would not be able to deal with the documents
sent to me from different agencies I get every few weeks. Many seem to
believe that everyone has the same office packages as they do and send
the .docx and other x files, when I know that some of the people they
deal with have Office 2003 or earlier since they did not have it in
their budgets for the newer ones.

So LO does MSO files better than OOo ever did.

 http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/file/n3763272/page_break_problem.odt
 page_break_problem.odt

Then let me confuse you some more. I have downloaded your file and
worked with it for a while.
First of all, I have a suggestion: your first page uses the First
Page style which is very good. But your second page uses the Index style
after creating a page break at the bottom of the first page. You don't
need a page break here. All you need to do is to right click the First
Page style and select modify. In the Organizer tab, change the Next
style from Default to Index. This will automatically make the second and
third pages use the Index style. (The Organizer tab for Index style has
the Next style listed as Index.) So, you only need a page break at the
end of the third page of the document to change the page style.
Use page breaks when you have multiple pages using the same page
style followed by a page with a different page style. Also use a page
break if you want to change the numbering of the following pages. But
anytime you have a single page with a given page style, modify that page
style to select the next page style to be used. This is how you can set
up a left page - right page sequence without having to place a page
break at the bottom of each page.
Further investigation, the layout you have in LO has something to
do with what you see. The bottom right of LO has three icons: single
right page, multiple right page, and multiple pages with left - right
pages swapping. (left - right - left- right - etc.) If I select either
of the first two, I see the page break in the middle of the page.
Selecting the third, I see a blank page between the third and fourth
page of your document. There is no visible page break.
But as far as why LO 3.5 would do what we both see, I really don't
have a good guess. Well, it might be something that has been added to
version 3.5 since it is not in version 3.4.5.

Wondering: Tools Options LibreOffice Calc General. In the

We DO have a choice; not enough people are using it. Just because a
new version is released does not mean we have to download it. If enough
people refuse to download it until x.x.2 or x.x.3, perhaps there would
be some changes in the scheduling. Even if there is no change, we can
wait until the version reaches one of these version using an earlier
more stable version for our more critical work.
I will continue downloading the latest version because I need to
keep up with the latest version's capabilities for writing purposes. I
make copies of documents that I use placing the copies in a separate
folder I named, DEV. Then I can open these copies with the latest
version. If anything happens to these files, no problem, they are only
copies.

The release when ready approach also doesn't favour bug-fixes.  It just means
the development is slow.  Features seldom get added.  Bugs still go unfixed.
If it favoured fixing bugs then there would be no bugs at all in the 3.3.x

Time based release trains have been shown to produce the best quality Free
software. A time based release is one that does not wait for either features,
or bug fixes - but is based (as purely as possible) on time. This enforces
discipline in introducing fixes, gives predictability, and allows more regular
releasing. It is also the case that we will necessarily release earlier, and
then rapidly, incrementally bug fix releases based on the previous stable
version. Thus if you have a need for the very highest quality version, it can
make sense to defer a move until the first or perhaps second minor point
release.

Synchronizing our time based release schedule with the wider Free Software
ecosystem also has huge advantages, by getting our new features, out to
users as quickly as possible - with a minimum of distribution cycle lag. In
consequence, we will aim at six monthly releases, and over time nudge them
 to align well with the
 March / September norms.

I generally wait until the 3.x.1 or 3.x.2 versions are out. If someone is not
aware of how the release schedule for LibreOffice works, it is very easy for
a person to reach the conclusion that you did that 3.5.0 wasn't adequately
 tested or ready for release.

[libreoffice-users] Top posting

2012-02-22 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)

Most people and especially those that are new to the lists will
top-post because that is what they are most familiar with.  Office
workers have almost never seen any alternative.  Unless the office apps
are not aimed at office users then it's ridiculous to expect anything else.

Is it good to start off by telling people off for not doing things your way
when we are supposed to be offering them choices?  Should we alienate people
and make them feel that to use LibreOffice they have to completely change their
entire lifestyle?  Is our main aim here to change the way people post or is it
to help people move to LibreOffice?

Regards from
Tom :)

[libreoffice-users] Themes for libreoffice Impress ? Where to get more ? And how to create ?

2012-02-22 Thread shirish शिरीष
Hi all,
Quite a few questions I have on this one. I recently started
working on Libreoffice Impress. I am not much of a technical guy but
still will try to describe things.

Once I load Libreoffice Impress, the Window opens in three panes .
Going from left to right it is :-

Pane A has the Slide Pane
Pane B is the workarea where you work on an individual slide
Pane C is the Task Pane.

I did see that these Panes can be viewed or unviewed by clicking on
View and checking or/and unchecking Various Panes.

Anyways, going further on the topic, in Pane C i.e. Tasks Pane there
are similar drop-down panes which can be viewed or unviewed by
checking and unchecking the View drop-down menu within the Tasks pane.

One of the Check boxes is for Master Pages which I find interesting.

Master Pages has something similar to 'Themes' . I do not know if
this is the proper word or there should be some other word to describe
it. What it does is give a style and a look to a presentation.

Now my main question/query is where do I find more such themes at ?
Does anybody know any sites where such user-generated custom 'themes'
could be found ? Bonus points if one could browse them with keywords.

Also is there a how-to if one wants to create a custom 'theme' ?

Lastly if one did find such a theme how does one install it or use it.

I am on Debian sid - using Libreoffice 3.4.5

Thank you for your patience.

[libreoffice-users] Calc filter bug in 3.5.0?

2012-02-22 Thread Steven Shelton

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Has anyone encountered a bug in LibO 3.5's calc wherein filters refuse
to work?

I want to get some data from my database, so I establish the connection
to the correct table from the Data Sources panel. The data from the
table all shows up. So I hit the filter button and enter DATE, =,
and 02/01/2012, then hit OK. Nothing happens; the data stays exactly
the same without filtering at all. And when I open up the filter dialog
again, it appears as it did before I made any changes at all. It works
fine in LibO 3.4.5 on my other PC. (These are both Windows XP boxes.)

Has anyone else encountered this? Before I put it into the bug database,
I want to make sure I haven't screwed something up somewhere (and that
I'm not duplicating someone else's bug report).

Re: [libreoffice-users] Top posting

2012-02-22 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Top posting and leaving the thread intact allows a person that is new to the
thread or can't quite remember context, to gain the full context of the later
replies.  It also allows people to only read the last message without having to
scroll or wade through tons of stuff from previous messages or try to pick out
other emails that have the same subject-line in order to try to make sense of
this one.  It neatly achieves both choices without requiring the receiver to do
anything other than scroll or not even scroll if they already remember roughly
what the thread is about.  If someone reads the latest message and then
suddenly realises that they don't seem to know the context after all then they
can choose to quickly scroll down and hopefully spot a message that does remind
them.  It's the way that almost all emailing works in almost every office, it's
the way phones and hand-helds are set-up, it's the way many people on the
accessibility list prefer as
they can simply stop the screen-reader once they have got the gist of the
reply.

There was a beautiful example earlier where i replied to the message as it was
written but then got accused of being off-topic because the alleged topic had
been edited out.  Note that the criticism was on-list just to make sure that
anyone new to the list becomes very aware that they are likely to be publicly
humiliated if they do something slightly wrong.  Imagine queuing to buy
something in a shop and the person at the counter punches the customer in front
of you.  Would you continue to wait in line or leave and perhaps use a
different store?

Note also that top-posters on this list have never asked bottom-posters to post
at the top.  It has always been bottom-posters arrogantly demanding that people
conform to their own obtuse way of doing things.  I did try bottom-posting a
few times and instead of people saying thanks they just further abused me,
again only publicly, that i hadn't done something quite right.  If there had
been anything approaching politeness or a gentle nudge in the right direction
then i might have tried again but i have no interest in allowing bullies to
intimidate me or anyone else.

'Regards' from
Tom :)

Curious to know how were you able to get the 'Tips' and 'Extended

I want to get some data from my database, so I establish the connection

and 02/01/2012, then hit OK.

Yes, this is a bug. I use Ubuntu, and I get the same results. The
filtering works when using 3.4.5 but does not work using 3.5.0.

Hi :)
Try changing the name of the file slightly?  I tend to add v1 to the end of a
file-name and gradually step that up; v2, v3 and so on.  Every so often if i am
reasonably sure i wont need earlier versions i delete a load of them and take
the v number off the end.

Does your disk think it's full?  Are you trying to save to a protected folder
or one that you don't have permissions to save to?  Can you save a
non-LibreOffice file in the same folder?

Regards from
Tom :)

Re: [libreoffice-users] Themes for libreoffice Impress ? Where to get more ? And how to create ?

 Hi all,
Quite a few questions I have on this one.

You may want to download these two items from this website.
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Publications
The two are: Getting Started with Impress chapter (part of the
Getting Started Guide) and the Impress Guide. Many of your questions
should be answered from one of the two.
Master Pages are also known as Master Slides or Slide Masters.
Whatever the name, think of them as being the templates for the slide
show. Like templates in Writer, you can use one master slide for all the
slides or use several master slides in the presentation.

Dear Carson,

download a presentation template. Say the nature one
http://templates.libreoffice.org/template-center/nature . While you
can download the template and make copies of it and use it, there
doesn't seem to be a way to drag the 'template' from the .otp file to

they can simply stop the screen-reader once they have got the gist of the reply.

There was a beautiful example earlier where i replied to the message as it was written but then got accused of being off-topic because the alleged topic had been edited out. Note that the criticism was on-list just to make sure that anyone new to the list becomes very aware that they are likely to be publicly humiliated if they do something slightly wrong. Imagine queuing to buy something in a shop and the person at the counter punches the customer in front of you. Would you continue to wait in line or leave and perhaps use a different store?

Note also that top-posters on this list have never asked bottom-posters to post at the top. It has always been bottom-posters arrogantly demanding that people conform to their own obtuse way of doing things. I did try bottom-posting a few times and instead of people saying thanks they just further abused me, again only publicly, that i hadn't done something quite right. If there had been anything approaching politeness or a gentle nudge in the right direction then i might have tried again but i have no interest in allowing bullies to intimidate me or anyone else.

'Regards' from
Tom :)

[libreoffice-users] Sudden French keyboard

2012-02-22 Thread Rob, grandpa of Ryan, Trevor, Devon Hannah
Using LibreOffice Writer 3.4.1 under Windows 7:

While working on a document, the keyboard will suddenly switch to a French
keyboard configuration. The only option we have been able to find to switch
back
to English is to shut down all LibreOffice windows and close all documents.

This has been marked solved in the forum:
http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7t=44239

However, we've tried that, and it doesn't work in our case. Whenever we have
looked at it, it always shows US English even though the keyboard is
operating
in French in LibreOffice Writer. (Other programs do not appear to be affected.)

True, but unfortunately a sign of the times. Hopefully, this new

DOCX, all of the graphics were missing. I know, file a bug report.

Why is this important? Unless images are lost after creation of an odf document.

If you were to write to m$ and comment that m$ can create an odf11
document but not an odf12 version, what would be the likely response.

It is certainly not any more important than support for any of the other
numerous formats supported by OOo. Interoperability has always been very
difficult. What formats would you continue to support.

Note that I am not in a position to dictate to my boss or my companies
clients what products they will use. Note that I do have full access to
pretty much any MS product that I care to use, so if a MS format is not
supported, then I must do all work with a MS deliverable in MS.

My Macro Document: http://www.pitonyak.org/AndrewMacro.odt

Off-topic, but takes a long time to load directly from the web via
abiword...daren't try LO...

Is the issue related to download speed or the internal document
arrangement? if it is the later, resaving the document with a newer
version may help, but I have not touched that document directly in a bit
because there was a bug in OOo that caused it to crash. The bug was
fixed but never made it into the last OOo release. LO deals with the
document just fine, but since the latest version of LO sometimes drops
graphics, I am hesitant to touch the document with that either.

To get around the bottom post annoyance, I installed software that

So now, I NEVER see any of the original message unless I go to extra effort.

True, but unfortunately a sign of the times. Hopefully, this new
'askLO' service will become so popular

Hmmm. Actually, unfortunate experience with that. I tried to register for
 the
site. The system keeps saying it has sent a validation message, but it never
 comes.
I have tried to get it to resend the activation message, via:
 http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/ucp.php?mode=resend_act
and it always says it does/has, but no message ever shows up. (Yes, I do
 check my
spam filters. It's not there, either.)

Ok just following up - checked at user.services.oo.o - there is no
registered account at the site with the email address you used to send
the original message here. (of course you may of used a different one)

So - if it is the askLibO site
1 - you would of needed to do so with an OpenID ID
2 - as for how to contact that askLibO admins without being able to
logon - I would use this address:
http://ask.libreoffice.org/feedback/?next=/questions/

If you have further questions I would certainly be willing to work you
on getting answers.

Best wishes,

//drew

Of course, I can't contact anyone without a validly registered ID. Nor can I
 re-
register: having tried it once, the system now knows that it has an entry for
 that
email address, and so won't let it be reused.

No, I do not particularly want askLO to be reading my Tweets or Facebook
 account.

Any suggestions? Any way to contact the actual people at askLO?

Of course now I;m confused - do you want to register at askLibO (in with
case you need an OpenID ID - really that is not a lot to ask - if you
can not find out how to do that without using Facebook on your own, just
say so and I'll point to a few free, non-profit sites that offer those)
 _0r_
do you want to register at user.services.oo.o?

Well, coming at it cold, I have no idea. All I know is that I went to the
askLO,
couldn't do anything in the way of asking, and got sent into the eternal and
useless
activation loop. The specifics of how that happened are lost in my browser
history. Yes, you are correct: I did end up at the openoffice site eventually,
but
that was purely as a result of what it asked me to do in the way of
registration.

o Open a new spreadsheet document.
o Click in the top left corner, where the row and column headers
meet, in order to select the entire sheet.
o Go to Format | Cells... | Font (or right-click | Format Cells... |
Font) and select your chosen font - or just use the Font Name box in
the Formatting toolbar.

o Repeat for Sheet2 and Sheet3 if desired.
o Go to File | Templates | Save..., give the template a name, and
save it somewhere - probably in My Templates.
o Go to File | Templates | Organize..., browse to and select the
template, and then click Commands | Set As Default Template.

This template will now be used when you create a new spreadsheet
(Calc) document, with the font set as you require. But I suspect any
new sheets you insert may fall back to Arial.

I trust this helps.

Thanks, Brian. I've done all that, but Calc continues to revert to
Arial every time. I seem to not be able to save a new default font for
all new documents. As I recall, I could do that in versions of Calc
prior to 3.5.
