Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Urgent Base problem (stability in long term use)

2012-03-18 Thread Paul Lens

Interesting to know!

For my part, by precaution, all my data are kept in separate dbf tables,
linked to an odb file.

Why do I use dbf? Standard format making it portable to all softs,
notably GIS softwares. Old archives can also be read even if you changed
your soft.

There is not much information on long term use of databases, let's say
more than 10 years (e.g.: keeping adresses or bibliographic data).
The file can get corrupt. But worser, some data inside the file can get
corrupt, without changing the structure of the dbf file, and you just
notice it when you query these data.

I heard once that MS-access is not stable enough in long term use. And,
sometimes, odb file can get problems (for ex. shutdown of windows while
some forms are open in the odb file).
But, when the tables are kept in separate files, recovery is easy, using
a backup copy of the odb file.

Using LibreOffice 3.3.2 on windows Vista.

NB: I came to openoffice several years ago mainly because of its good
integration with databases (standalone use).

I wonder if my way of using Base is optimal, trying to find the way
among the many possibilities offered by Base and Calc.

Many thanks to the developers,

Paul

You need to restore your database from a backup. It is lost. This
would not have happened with a true database connection.
The database wrapped in a single document (embedded HSQLDB) is just
fine for drafts and demo purposes. If you really want to work with
this bastard you should save a backup copy whenever you take a break.
Close the file, wait a moment and make copy of it before you reopen
the file.

The problem with using dbf files is that you no longer have a
relational database. Because Base is then dealing with files not a
database engine it will only use one file at a time and will not
relate them.

Re: [libreoffice-users] More mailmerge woes

2012-03-18 Thread Mark Stanton
Herr Säger, you may have hit the nail on the head, thank you.

Yes, even though my query was correctly displayed as the driving data
for the document (of course, since I'm using mailmerge, this is a
Writer document that has the problem), when I went through the
Change datasource dialogue/wizard, it showed a different database
as the source, weird!

And that is a *fabulous* feature in Writer, just dragging the column
onto the page, fabulous.

However, there was still one problem remaining which I have fixed by
changing the field name Company to Co.
Whether I allowed MySQL to produce the fieldname or explicitly
speciifed it with an alias, Base would insert the field as company
(lowercase first letter), and it would therefore display the
fieldname not the field contents, because the query wasn't producing
a field with that name! Company is a reserved word somehow?
Surely not!

Many thanx

http://hsqldb.org
Download the latest version.
Put it somewhere in your libraries (no installation required).
Point your office Java to the extracted hsqldb.jar.
Extract ./database/ from your embedded database somewhere to your files.
Rename your database files with a common dbname. prefix.
Connect a new Base document using JDBC with an URL like this one (refer
to the downloaded documentation in your libs):

jdbc:
hsqldb:file:/home/andreas/hsqldb-2.2.5/databases/Praxis/hsqldbdata/db0/chargen;default_schema=true;shutdown=true;hsqldb.default_table_type=cached;get_column_name=false

Copy over the queries, forms and reports from your embedded thing.

You get the latest version of a full featured HSQLDB without
restrictions, many more functions, the access control and safety you
would expect from a database application.

You can write a configuration file to run a server for concurrent access.

Drawbacks:
- Embedded HSQL requires another Java config. I use OOo for embedded and
LibO 3.3.4 for normal access.
- Base can not handle user defined row filters with HSQLDB2. I use my
own power filters anyway.

Re: [libreoffice-users] [Feature request] Allow typing when saving file

2012-03-18 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
No, i had already posted an answer to this thread.  Then i read another post
which made me think of something else and then a little while later i thought
of another thing.  So i made a real mess of posting too many times.

I have my cache set at 20Mb but i have also raised the Memory per object
higher than any of the pictures or graphics in my documents.  I sometimes use
Gimp to reduce the byte-wise size without losing too much quality.  Often
photos from a camera are such a high resolution that they would look good on a
roadside bill-board.  Scaling them down to about twice the size they are going
to be in the document means they still look good
http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/Lite_Quickies/
http://kerryshamblin.com/index.php?page=tutorial-web-images-gimp
http://www.ahotw.com/2008/08/09/gimp-image-cropping-for-web/
This link does a lot more than i normally have time to
http://www.geekazine.com/guests/basic-gimp-preparing-pictures-for-the-web
I only usually get photos down to a couple of hundred kilobytes but logos and
stuff are usually fairly easy to get down to maybe 20Kb.

Images occasionally vanish from documents so it's a good idea to keep a back-up
of them outside the document.  If you save in Odt format then you can find all
the images by opening the document as an archive.  (Create a copy of the file.
Rename the file-ending from .odt to .zip and then double-click on the file's
icon).  So it's easy to get a folder full of the images you use before they run
into trouble.

It's not clear what operating system you are using.  Xp or a GnuLinux such as
Ubuntu?

Tom :)

[libreoffice-users] SOLVED- lack of recent documents

I just tried to type one of our spreadsheets into a new ods file. I entered the
formulas and text exactly as the original and did cell borders. I didn't change
font settings (size, bold...). I enter hard values for the 3 cells we use for
external links. I set the print range and then closed an opened the file a few
times and the print range loaded every time. Once I added one of the links that
pull a number from another ods file save and close. When opened the print range
is gone.

I created a new ods file and put the same 3 links in it and typed random text.
This file so far loads the print range every time. It seems I have some special
combination that blocks the print range from loading sometimes.

Thanks, Ron Gregor

Hi Tom,

thank you very much for the fast response and the hints.

Using the concordance file was necessary, because the index is quite big and
has to be changed several times (prepress, for publishing etc., 300p text and
two indexes for persons and items).

Worked with little errors in OO 3.1., so I hoped that it would work even better
in LO, which I use (since fork) in my daily work.  But now I can't index by
concordance file at all.  Even a simple test-text and a few entries results in
a headline and that's it.  Until now I thought indexing by external file would
be a standard procedure (as a part of the online-help).

New installation of LO didn't change anything. Maybe use of concordance-file
relies on some feature, I don't know (a special java-environment e.g.?)

Best regards
u-ri

[libreoffice-users] Conditions

2012-03-18 Thread Mark Stanton
For my mailmerge I want to set up a conditional paragraph conditional
on more than one thing.

I've got a database field Country, and if this is blank or contains
Scotland I want the paragraph hidden.

I *think* the condition ought to be

NOT Country OR Country EQ 'Scotland'

but it doesn't work. I thought blanks at the end of the country
field might cause a problem so I tried

NOT Country OR 'Scotland' EQ Country

but that didn't work either.

The help states that the fields ought to be written as

database.table.field

but that doesn't make any difference either and the single condition
NOT Country does work, although it's insufficient for my needs.

Have I got my logic entirely wrong, or can the condition expression
not have more than one part?

You need double quotes and I guess parenthesis can help as weel, that is:

(NOT Country==) OR (Country==Scotland)

equivalent to

(Country) AND (CountryScotland)

These two are not logically equivalent. I think the second one is what the op

Might be in the logic. You wrote if this is blank or contains
Scotland I want the paragraph hidden.
 I would write this as
If
(db.table.Country IS NULL) OR (db.table.Country='Scotland')
then the paragraph is hidden.
Then again in LO queries, this is written as
(db.table.Country IS EMPTY) OR (db.table.Country='Scotland')
See if either of these work.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Indexing a text by concordance file failes

2012-03-18 Thread u-ri
Hi Tom, hi Andreas,

I'm really thankful for your efforts and for being so lenient. But
unfortunately the given solution doesn't match my problem. The
solution-thread is about OpenOffice and the guy in the OO-forum has
successfully got (!) an index using a concordance file and wants to modify
it using a 2nd different file. (In fact I found this OO-Forum-Thread before
I decided to start this LO-Thread.) Maybe I couldn't make my point clear
enough:
In LO (!) I can't insert an index by concordance file at all. All I get is a
headline. It doesn't work in my environment and in LO 3.5.x. using the
newest documentation (Thank you, Tom!). I have no problem building an index
by concordance file in my old OO 3.x. Of course I can (and I do) open the
LO-text after finishing as a workaround in OO and insert the index
afterwards, but I'm quite sure that's not the way it's intended me to do.
Please, did anybody succeed to use this feature in LO 3.5.1.2 running Win7
64Bit? Or should I consider submitting a (potential-) bugreport?

Sorry for the inconveniences and
best regards
u-ri

THANKS for that, I must admit I've gotten spoilt by lots of years on Windows
now, expect one install file to set up a program, and never having to use a

use command lines for some things

Mind you, I don't mind learning again, if one is learning to do things more
reliably and or powerfully

  One small step for mankind...

 http://hsqldb.org
 Download the latest version.
Put it somewhere in your libraries (no installation required).
Point your office Java to the extracted hsqldb.jar.
Extract ./database/ from your embedded database somewhere to your files.
Rename your database files with a common dbname. prefix.
Connect a new Base document using JDBC with an URL like this one (refer to
 the
 downloaded documentation in your libs):
  jdbc:
 hsqldb:file:/home/andreas/hsqldb-2.2.5/databases/Praxis/hsqldbdata/db0/chargen;default_schema=true;shutdown=true;hsqldb.default_table_type=cached;get_column_name=false
Copy over the queries, forms and reports from your embedded thing.

You get the latest version of a full featured HSQLDB without restrictions,
 many
more functions, the access control and safety you would expect from a
 database
 application.
You can write a configuration file to run a server for concurrent access.

 Drawbacks:
 - Embedded HSQL requires another Java config. I use OOo for embedded and LibO
 3.3.4 for normal access.
 - Base can not handle user defined row filters with HSQLDB2. I use my own
 power filters anyway.
