[libreoffice-users] LinuxQuestions.org Members Choice Awards - "Office Suite of the Year" - vote
Hi all, The site LinuxQuestions.org is again offering users the chance to vote on their "Members Choice Awards" categories. They are debating this year as to whether do away with the "Office Suite of the Year" award, as LibreOffice usually wins by such a wide margin. Feel free to add your voice and spread the word about the vote! You may find the voting site here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/2016-linuxquestions-org-members-choice-awards-123/office-suite-of-the-year-4175596296/ On the topic over whether they should close this particular category, IMO, if there were no other office suite choices other than LibreOffice, then closing the category would make sense. However, there are plenty of choices in the Linux office suite arena and it is always nice to see how people in general feel of their most favourite office suite. Yes, the margins are quite wide between LibreOffice and the next second office suite choice, however, it is always nice to see who is in second, third, fourth place standing. It is also always nice to see that the work put into LibreOffice is validated by an outpouring of its users. I would then suggest that we should not only place our vote for LibreOffice, but make sure to comment on the page, that the "Office Suite of the Year Award" not be closed. The category not only validates the TDF/LibreOffice achievement, but also serves to validate and recognize other open source/for-profit projects in the office suite category, regardless of the standing. I cannot imagine how the awards scene would look like if all other award organizations decided to do the same and close down categories for the same reason. Hope you can take time to vote for your favourite office suite and feel free to browse the other categories on the site. Actually, I have over 180 fonts in my ".font"folder, and have over 14GB of font files on my "file server". No need to add fonts, LibreOffice will substitute quite easily with the Liberation family of fonts which are pretty well identical to Arial, the same with Times font. No need to install any MS fonts if you don't need to. The fonts shipped with LibreOffice are such that they will offer the largest success with respect to interoperability with fonts. Hi Tim, all, Le 07/10/15 08:16 AM, Tim---Kracked_P_P---webmaster a écrit : I use US Letter and US Legal sizes of paper, and not A4 or A5. For me, this seems the easiest way for creating the brochures I produce from time to time. I tried the "brochure option" many versions ago, but did not like it due to printer issues with my HP laser printer and the Epson inkjet I had back then. I have not tried it on my Canon printer[s] that I bought after the Epson printer died. I just work with the manual brochure formatting [columns and margins], since it is the way I find easiest for me to use. I use brochure size for printing concert programs for a music group I manage. I do this every month and a half or so. Here are the settings for US Letter I use that allow me to edit and print with very little wasted white space close to the header/footer of booklet pages. And, as mentioned elsewhere, the page numbering is done automatically. These settings work really well. Steps: Set Booklet Page Format * go to Format->Page * set Width: 5.50" * set Height: 8.50 * set Orientation: Portrait * set all margins to 0.50" When Editing *if your monitor is large enough, at bottom of your Writer window, click on "Multipage-view" (it's the icon with 2 separate pages). This will allow you to see 2 pages side by side. To Print in booklet/brochure format: * go to File->Print * in General tab, you will now see the pages represented on the left-hand side * go to the "Page Layout" * Pages per sheet: 1 * Order: left to right, then down * leave "Draw a border around each page" unchecked * choose "Brochure" * choose "Page Sides" ** Include: Back sides/left pages ** choose "OK" ** the back sides of pages will all print ** left the pages print then flip the whole pack of pages ** Include: Front sides/right pages ** choose "OK" ** the front sides of the pages will print That's it! You should be able to fold your printed booklet and/or staple if needed. Alex Ah, yes It references a list of names in another sheet called NBBP Address Book and shows the list in a column on the first sheet A1. So for example, in NBBP Address Book sheet Name1 Name2 Name3 Name4 Will then appear in sheet A1 as the same: Name1 Name2 Name3 Name4 I should also add that the Google =QUERY then lists the names as above, but, the formula only shows on the first name (Name1) and the other names in the list are displayed as names. This allows a user to copy/paste the other names without having any formula appear when clicking in the field. I use the list as a reference list to help users copy/paste names into other fields on the A1 sheet. It avoids users from spelling the names with errors. [libreoffice-users] Re: Booklet Issues
Hi Jake, Here is the excellent advise I got from Mark Bourne WHY LibreOffice brochure print BEHAVES this way = I think the problem is that the proportions of an 8.5x11 page are different from the proportions of half a page (which is 5.5x8.5), so a simple scaling doesn't work. When content created at 8.5x11 is scaled to fit on half a page, the 8.5 side become 5.5, while the 11 side is scaled by the same proportion to 7.1 - less than the 8.5 height which is actually available. Try creating the content with the page size set to 5.5x8.5 (or 8.5x13.1 if that makes it easier to adapt the existing content), then print that as a brochure on 8.5x11 paper. (Doesn't help you much using US paper sizes, but for those using the European A sizes - A4, A5, etc. - this isn't so much of a problem; those sizes are designed so that the proportions remain the same when a page is cut in half) Mark. = --- THE FIX FOR US LETTER SIZE 8.5x11in PAPER --- I found that margins were still an issue with Mark's advise and margins, so here is how I fixed it for me AND these are also what I would suggest to you. -- Set your page size in * menu item Format-Page-Page(tab) to: ** Width: 5.50in ** Height: 8.50in ** Margins: all set to .50in This will allow you control to print as close as possible to the edge of your brochure (pamphlet) size document. -- Note that it is still important that, at the point of printing, you still go and print using the Print-PageLayout(tab)-Brochure(tagged radio button) -- If you are now printing too closely to the margins, just adjust your margin settings in the Format-Page-Page(tab) to make it work. You will have to experiment to get the result you want with your margins. -- IF you are printing a whole lot of copies and your printer does not allow double-sided printing, you can print with the: Print-PageLayout(tab)-Brochure(tagged radio button) BUT also right below you will find * Brochure radion button ** choose Page sides-Back sides / left pages ** then take your printed pages and flip them over and then ** choose Page sides-Front sides / right pages Note that: Printing multiple pages in this order will have them come out of your printer in the right sorted order to separate them manually and fold them. If you do the printing of sides with right page and then left pages, then you will have to collate them and then fold. --- TIPS ABOUT BLANK PAGES IN YOUR PRINT --- ALSO, if you are printing a brochure (pamphlet) with multiple pages, be prepared to see some BLANK PAGES. You may then have to adjust the amount of pages you actually use in the document to make the print job work. So, in some cases, I have had to add an additional blank page at the end of my document to make the brochure print work out ... this then gave me an additional side to add more information (I volunteer for a music group and print out our concert programs using this method and it works really well! AND is helping convert some of our musicians and volunteer staffers to LibreOffice -- I have standardized our office suite to LibreOffice, just by offering up documents in the ODF formats and the .pdf-hybrid formats.) --- TIPS ABOUT FONT SIZE --- LASTLY, using this method, you are also in control of the FONT SIZE, which is scale exactly to the proportion you use on your brochure, so you may want to take a look at your font size ... I have my font size to 11 on some pages and 12. Hope this helps. The forms you can implement on sheets are limited. On a protected sheet the tab key navigates horizontally from one unlocked and visible cell to the next unlocked and visible cell until the last unlocked and visible cell in the row. Then it jumps to the next row's unlocked and visible cell. If there is no next row with unlocked and visible cells, it jumps back to the first one. Hmm, yes, I knew from my past work with database work that one could assign a tab sequence. [libreoffice-users] Simple address data and 3 sheets
I am trying to keep a spreadsheet file as simple as possible for a group of musicians who have very little to no knowledge of how a spreadsheet functions. So, in the spreadsheet, I have: * Sheet1: has a list of names, in a column, that will change monthly describing how long each musician played in a second column. A musician general manager would input the musicians names once a month. This list would change every month and would have different combinations of names depending on whether they were hired to perform or not. * Sheet2: has a column where it lists the musicians' names who performed by referencing the corresponding name cells to the Sheet1 name cells, BUT, Sheet2 has to have their addresses show in a set of cells that mimics an address book (similar to Thunderbird address book) * Sheet3: has ALL the lists of the musicians' names, addresses laid out like an address book similar to Thunderbird (simple to put together for any user) I was wondering if there was an elegant way of doing the following: Sheet2 would need to find the corresponding name from each name cell on Sheet1 and then look up the correct name on Sheet3 simple address book. The musicians data in the Sheet3 address book would then fill in the cells on Sheet2 My solution thus far: * create a series of if arguments that would check each name in the name cell in Sheet2 until it finds the same name and then, once the if argument is satisfied, would then fetch the address data from Sheet3 simple address book and populate the cells on Sheet2 My question is ... Is there another simpler or more elegant way of accomplishing this process? Is there another argument I could use to do this? Thanks for the help. Marc It won't be implemented because this is too far away from the intended purpose of an arithmetic calculator. And this feature is not part of the ODF standard, so it can't be stored in a spreadsheet file. LibreOffice has a database component. Even if it is not a good one, it does everything what 90% of all spreadsheet users try so desparately to do on spreadsheets list keeping, editing through input forms, sorting, filtering, simple calculation, pretty reporting. For all the rest, it interfaces very well with Calc. Yes, I did look at Base, but, would rather like to stay with Calc as there are more people who would be able to trouble-shoot on spreadsheet software that on LibreOffice Base. Although, that being said, I am going to try to replicate the same process that I am trying to achieve with Calc at a later date, on Base; just to satisfy my curiosity of working with Base. I am curious then, if we are holding fidelity to the ODF standard, then, how do new features come about in Calc? Would it not be a little bleeding-edge of LibreOffice to add a new feature to Calc to see if that particular new feature would catch on with users? This then could later be proposed as a feature add-on to the ODF standard. Also, if a dev did show interest in working on such a feature and garnered enough support for it, would it not be adopted for Calc or at least be considered? While such a feature does not find its roots from a mathematical perspective, it would certainly be of good use to users creating forms in Calc. For the sake of useability, it may be worthwhile to look into. I am just creating a spreadsheet with calculations of costs for some music projects. It uses a series of sheet (4) and on the last sheet I would like it to print off on a single US Letter size page. I am curious, how does one make sure that the printed lines all end up on one page? It seems to me that Calc has a very poor WYSIWYG representation of a printed page (unlike Writer and Impress). Are there any tips that I am missing as far as making sure the page prints off okay to a US letter size? Thus far it prints either too wide or too long for the page, and, it seems like fitting on a particular page size is more of a trial and error exercise. My opinion, FWIW; To me, it seems like you're using the wrong tool for presenting your data. It's fine to do the grunt work in Calc, but it's easier to present the output in Writer. Possibly in tabular form. You can cut the cell(s) you want and Paste Special - Link into the correct place in Writer. This has the beauty that, if anything changes in the spreadsheet, that change is reflected in the Writer document. Ah! So this is perhaps what I am looking for, and, you are right, obviously the wrong tool. So, just to get it straight, if, for example, my first 3 sheets are arranged for input and reporting on monitor only, Instead of having sheet 4 set up to output to a printer, I could then have the data display and print according to a page format in Writer? [libreoffice-users] Printing Brochure with Writer -- margins
Just a question re: printing a document in brochure layout found in the Print menu (tab- Page Layout). I am just trying to make the routine of publishing music concert programs as easy for new office staff as possible (I am director for an early music group). One way to print the concert programs in booklet format is to have the office staff type up the concert program in Writer and at the point of printing, choose the brochure layout option in the Printer window tab Page Layout. This method works perfectly and allows for any new person to the music office to just step in and print concert programs in very few steps that require practically no brochure layout knowledge -- extremely user friendly to use. My question is, when the printed brochure comes out, there is a lot of wasted space at the top and bottom of the brochure pages. Is there a way to make use of this space? ... For example, have the printed words start higher up the page and also down the page? I know that one could use Draw to make a brochure, but IMO, if the brochure layout option were tweaked enough to take advantage of the free space at the top/bottom of brochure pages, it would become an even more useful tool for occasions when brochure printing is called from a Writer document. Is this something that could be suggested as a bug or put on a wishlist? Each choice produced a perfect PDF replica of the ODT file but Adobe Reader imposes wider margins when it prints to a hard copy. If I could get LO to print in the right orientation when I ask it to print a booklet I wouldn't need to mess around with PDF format Jeff I tried to print a series of test pages (8 pages in length) and then sent to print with the brochure choice tagged. As you pointed out I got the same results as you described in your original post. HOWEVER, I then reprinted a second time and for some reason the print went according to what I would expect and the booklet was printed without a problem. I tried to replicate this again, but I could not do it. I tried different settings, but again, could not reproduce it. One explanation could be that the LibreOffice profile may have something to do with this (maybe erasing it or forcing a new one by re-labelling your profile with another name). I am not sure. BTW ... I installed the v.4.0.2.1 build of LibreOffice as I am also testing it for bugs. This is the version I test tried my file. I am not sure if this would correct the problem. [libreoffice-users] Re: booklet printing problem
Hi Jeff, Le 27/03/13 10:33 PM, Jeff Shrowder a écrit : Another problem I have with LO (ver. 4.0.1.2) is that when I try to print a booklet - let's say a 4 page A5 booklet - on A4 it prints pages 1 and 4 in landscape across the portrait-oriented A4 page rather than along it. Pages 2 and 3 are similarly affected. The settings I use are the same as for LO 3.5. The layout image in the Print dialogue box is the same as in 3.5 so, everything being equal, I should get the right result. But I don't. At the moment my work-around is to export to PDF and do a booklet print using Adobe Reader (which Evince can't do). This is less than satisfactory on two counts. One, LibreOffice should do it 'out of the box', as it has in the past' and two, Adobe Reader creates larger margins all round, making the resulting print smaller than originally set. Where am I going wrong? Is there some hidden box I haven't ticked? Is this a bug? Please help. Jeff Try this: * choose Print * choose Properties * choose device * Printer Language type -- you may need to re-adjust the type to suit your printer. You may have to experiment with this until you get it right. Let us know if this works. I fully uninstalled upstream LibreOffice and finally installed LO 4.0.1 from ppa:libreoffice/ppa . Well, I have to say something ... I had initially decided installing LO from upstream after almost two years running with ppa:libreoffice/ppa . I decided to made this change after suffering several problems regarding 'Partial Upgrades' , this is a very unconfortable issue where you have to uninstall quite a lot of packages to reinstall them again and ... even in that position, you may be unable to upgrade your LO version. I have decided to give a last opportunity to ppa:libreoffice/ppa , but either way, I believe the proper solution would be to include 'KDE Integration' packages on LibreOffice upstream. Does anybody know if this is a plausible/planned solution ? Thanks a lot. Although I do not use Ubuntu linux, I use Mageia2 Linux with KDE. I install the freedesktop menus that are found in the Desktop Integration file folder, and the menus work well with KDE. I am not sure if this would work with Ubuntu. [libreoffice-users] Re: How can I create a certificate border?
Bonjour Fabian, Sure, there are some templates that you can use on the AOO website templates[1]. You can download some of these and then either use them or use them as a base to mod your own. If you wonder how to download them, do the following: * click on the Use it! button, this will lead you to a download webpage which will lead to a black rendering page of the .ott file. * take into note the number and the name of the file in the URL * Cut the URL of that page back to the aoo-templates/ section and do a return to surf to the sourceforge.net page. * you will now be on the sourceforge.net page. Browse DOWN to the number and file name * right-click on the file name and save it * once save, just locate the file in your system and right-click on it and say open (with LibreOffice) * done! Le 2013-02-11 12:50, Don C. Myers a écrit : Hi All, A simple copy and paste works really well!! No typing necessary. Just make sure you have the file saved as a .txt that you open with GEdit. When I was new to Linux (Ubuntu) and didn't understand anything about what the system was really doing or about the file structure, OpenOffice was updated, and it wasn't going to be included for Ubuntu users until the next update, which was three or 4 months down the road. I ran across this method as a way to update my OpenOffice without waiting. The same thing took place with the next OpenOffice release. Again I found the updated instructions on the Internet. I still use this as it is easy to update computers. I've installed Ubuntu on about 23 or so. It is also easy for a new person to Ubuntu since they don't have to understand changing directories, etc. Simple extract the download to the desktop, and then copy and paste the three commands into the terminal. Don This I also agree with as well. If the scripts fit for everyone. However, there is no sense making installing LibreOffice (the downloaded files) sound so complicated for Linux. You don't really need to know much about installing .deb's or .rpm's other than to right-click and the files and picking the right choices. That's all. In fact, if you are just installing one .deb or .rpm, on most systems, you just have to double-click on the .deb or .rpm file and it will call up the distro's installer. It's just that simple. [libreoffice-users] Re: Installing the Deb
Le 2013-02-11 13:05, Dan Lewis a écrit : There are a variety of ways to install LO for Debian OS's. Some are harder than others, and some are easier. What no one has mentioned is the use of script files. They will do much of the work for you. Planning how to install the Deb files is important. If you have LO from your OS, you need to use Synaptic (Step#1 mentioned above.) But this is the only time you need to do this. dpkg (installs the Deb files) writes the new files over the existing files. There is no need to remove them. Extract the installation folder and always place it in the same location. (This is important for the contents of the script file.) Example of the script file: #!/bin/sh cd /home/dan/Downloads/LO/LibO_3.6.5.2_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US/DEBS/ sudo dpkg -i *.deb cd desktop-integration sudo dpkg -i *.deb This looks like a lot of typing, but it is not really. Besides much of it is used over and over again. The third line is the longest. cd /home/dan/Downloads/LO/ is the location for the installation folder that you extracted. LibO_3.6.5.2_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US is the name of that folder. I do not like to type long names like the name of the installation folder, so I look for a short cut. I use the file browser (Nautilus) to go to this folder's location, I can right click on the folder and select Properties. There at the top is the folder's name highlighted. Ctrl+C copies the name, and I paste it into the third line. I also erase the name of the previous folder. Another method: erase the number of the previous LO version and type in the new number. In this case, replace 3.6.5.2 with 4.0.0.3. What this does: installs the Deb files and desktop integration items. The script file needs to be executable when it was first created. To do this right click the script file, select Properties - Permissions. Click the box labelled Allow executing the file as a program. The location of the script file might be important also. So actual steps to install 4.0.0.3: 1) Download the file to /home/dan/Downloads/LO/. 2) Extract the downloaded file to the same location. 3) Update the third line of the script file using either method using gedit. 4) In the file browser, double click the script file. 5) Click the button Run in Terminal. 6) Type your password. 7) Close the terminal. The first two steps involve only clicks. Step 3 can involve only using the mouse, or typing 4 digits and 3 periods. Only step 6 involves typing with the rest done by mouse clicks. --Dan Yes, but a newcomer to Linux who wished to install LibreOffice on her/his distro would not know this, and hopefully, would just do what most people would do and unpack the compressed files and double-click the .deb's or .rpm's ... or select all of them - right-click and choose to open with the file manager. I don't believe we are doing our users any service by suggesting all of these convoluted ways of installing. Let's promote the easy and straight forward. it really simple. Hi Tim, Le 2013-02-11 14:04, webmaster-Kracked_P_P a écrit : So far, needing the terminal to install packages [not all] is a problem for some users who want to switch from Windows. Also, sometimes the double-clicked package installs do not even make a menu or desktop launcher icon, so you have to go into the bin or other folder and create your own launcher icon. I had to do that for the Canon Scanning package. It was /usr/bin/scangearmp and how many new users to Linux would know how to create a launcher or where the command was stored? Not sure about the other deb software, but we do supply this in our packages, it's in the main packagage-desktop integration -libreoffice4.0-freedesktop-menus-4.0.0-103.noarch. [libreoffice-users] Re: Installing the Deb
Le 2013-02-11 17:01, Dan Lewis a écrit : All well and good, but the simple way that you suggest will present problems for the newcomer on Debian OS's. The desktop-integration file will not install if the LO that came with the OS install CD remains: it must be removed. Without doing this, you can not right click on a file and select a LO version to open the file. We used to use Synaptic to remove an installed program or install a program from the Ubuntu repositories. A few years ago Ubuntu no longer included this package manager when it went to using the Unity desktop. (Synaptic was a part of the gnome desktop package.) In its place, Ubuntu introduced the Ubuntu Software Center. It appears that programs can also be removed using it, but only if they came from the Ubuntu repositories. Right now I have LO 3.6.5.2 and 4.0.0.3 installed from the website. Neither of these are listed in Ubuntu Software Center, so it can not be used to remove them. I just checked out your first paragraph. What you wrote does not work for installing LO in Ubuntu. (It probably will not work for any of the Debian OS's, but I only have Ubuntu and can not check the others.) The only thing that works is to think about the specific steps that must be followed and determine how to do them either on the command line or using a script. You may want to call these convoluted, but at least they work. --Dan Thanks for the information Dan. I will install Ubuntu on a spare box and test these out. I for one am for simplifying the notes on the .rpm section and adding a more simplified intallation routine of the 4 steps which do work for users who install the most used default managers as Gnome or KDE managers. We should also try to find a visual installation routine for our Ubuntu users. The vast majority of users are just interested in using the software. Is some wish to install the latest and the bleeding edge versions, we need to make it an easy install. We are looking for more contributors in all of our teams and especially QA. IMO, we should try to get our betas/rc's into the hands of users interested in QA who actually use LibreOffice in a productive way. The installation barrier should not become such a burden that such users would cringe at the very thought of installing these pre-release versions. When doing QA, users are often installing newer version of LibreOffice in a very short order of time. [libreoffice-users] http://www.LinuxQuestions.org 2012 Annual Poll
Hi everyone, FYI, there are just less than 72 hours left to join in on the yearly LinuxQuestions.org poll 2012! One of the categories is Office Suite of the Year of course. LibreOffice won this category last year. Let's make it the winner again this year! Go to http://www.LinuxQuestions.org, log in -- if you are not a member, you can register BUT BE AWARE, THAT YOU MUST POST AT LEAST ONCE for your vote to count. You can do this by just presenting yourself on one of the forums and then go to this page: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/2012-linuxquestions-org-members-choice-awards-104/ and vote! That's it! So, vote for LibreOffice, the office suite that has once again grown its developer community, grown in popularity and grown its userbase in 2012 -- that's you! It's an achievement that we need to celebrate! Let's vote and show our appreciation, we have all participated at making this the best office suite of choice! Usually, if an individual is seriously interested in contributing: * she/he will go to the Get Involved section of our website[1] * read through the different categories for contribution * choose/join an area of interest * announce her/himself to the list * state their particular interest in that section * members will then direct them to their project needs If unsure of where you would best fit: * the user or the discuss mailing lists are where you could leave questions with regards to contributing * someone from the project will ask you about your interests, after which, guide you to the right contributor-section that suits you best * once you have joined the team and announced yourself, the team members will help guide you to their project needs. Actually, I am more than a bit surprised by this - using clipart in presentations is very common, to my experience, and an important tool to make them more lively - so this problem */should/* be severe for many people using Impress..or how are you people using Impress do? I tried removing the package, as as you said, the themes are back. But there are not many clipart images shipped with Impress, so it is still quite useless. Do you mean to then add clipart manually to new themes? By finding them individually on the internet, or by downloading the openclipart package (not the ubuntu package) and them adding them manually? Best, Magnus Hi Magnus, You could browse the LibreOffice Extensions site where you will find various clipart packages to install. The extensions section does have the same clipart collection available but in theme form in French (I just tested this collection and it is indeed in French themes). You could install it and rename the themes one by one by right clicking the theme name and choosing Rename. Alternatively, you could ask the packager for the openclipart package if the clipart could be indexed on themes and point her/him to the FR collection on the extensions site. I have the feeling that I might be treading on thin ground here but I will outline my reasons as to why this could work below * Libreoffice is perfect for use within university's / schools as it can be easily distributed thanks to the GNU license the same goes for Zotero * The use of Zotero could replace the inbuilt Bibliography referencing tool as the current one is quite bewildering to use for many people * Zotero has a nice GUI and can work in with Firefox via an extension which is also open source so at the same time we are not just supporting one open-source initiative but three! * Zotero is open to suggestions and it appears to other projects as well * Increased awareness of The Document Foundation program via Zotero related media attention (Vice Versa for LO and Zotero) * it would bring a fresh feel to the whole project and could even mean a new approach and reinvigorate the project Let me Know what you think and feel free to shoot me down if you so wish! Samsung usually has good support for Linux, I usually recommend their printers for Linux -- the SCX and ML printers work great! = Here are the steps to download the driver: * choose the driver (the support page will offer support for the CLP-320N/XAA OR CLP-320N/SEE -- make sure you pick the right printer)[1] * once on the CLP-320N/??? page, choose the Downloads tab * choose the Driver tab and download the Linux Unified Printer driver (click on the icon under the File column) Here are the steps to install the driver (Note that I use Mageia2 with KDE, but the process should be similar on Gnome or other Linux windowing systems): * find the Unified Driver that you downloaded. * right-click on the file and choose uncompress the file here -- this will uncompress the files into a file folder cdroot * double-click on the file folder cdroot and you will notice that there is an autorun file that you should run in admin mode. There are a variety of ways to do this -- the following is one way of doing it: ** in the open window where you see the autorun file, right-click anywhere in the window, but not on any file or file folder. This will open a menu list, choose Action-Open terminal here ** this will open Konsole (do the command $ls ** this should show autorun* Linux/ ** give the command $su and enter your root password ** you are now in root level and you should now see a # instead of a $ ** give the command #ls ** you should still see autorun* Linux/ ** do the command #sh autorun * you will now see the Unified Driver window * click on Next * accept the agreement and click on Next * I usually pick Select All and Next * I usually check the Disable LPT port support and Next * wait for the driver to install * a new window appears, at this point, I usually select Network printer and click on Search * the installer will search for just a few seconds and stop -- just ignore this and click on Cancel * a small window appears Printer is not installed. Are you sure ..., click on Yes * the installer will still complete the installation * the driver should now be installed After this, use your distro's printer installer to check to see if the right printer driver is being used. You should find the CLP-320 driver in the Samsung list of drivers. = Hope this helps. I usually recommend Samsung as a good choice for printer and my son has a brother printer that worked 'out of the box' without any problems on Linux (it is an older model). [libreoffice-users] Re: New brothers printer does not appear to print Landscape.
Hi Helen et al: Le 2012-06-21 22:29, Helen a écrit : I had the same problem, and here's the fix: In OO or LO, in the print dialogue, there is a properties button, and from there, Device tab. One of the dropdowns there is Language. It defaults to PDF If you instead select Postscript (Level from driver) then landscape printing works. It's a bug in OO and LO, and can be fixed for each individual printing job. Unfortunately, I haven't learned a way to make the fix permanent. Helen I had the same problem with my Samsung printer that quit doing Landscape with my Mageia Linux distro. I found that it was not in fact a bug with LibreOffice but a problem with the printer driver. If the Brother uses SPL (Samsung Printer Language), and, it looks like it does, then you may have the same driver problem. I solved my problem by installing the SpliX printer driver supported by the OpenPrinting.org site (Linux Foundation). You can find the installation routine here: http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.linux.mageia.user/7431 If it solves the problem, the fix should be reported to both the Brother devs as well as the SpliX group so that they can update their printer compatibility page. I no longer have to go to the properties button to change the settings on any of my print jobs. What am I missing? Marc After fiddling quite a bit and passing through pages multiple times though my printer here is the solution: For some reason, LibreOffice, at the point of print, will open the print window and choose the printer driver pdf for my Samsung printer, which will not allow any landscape formatted documents at all (even without columns). It will only print in portrait mode. The fix is to change the driver to PostScript (Print-Properties-Device(tab)-Printer Language Type- PostScript (Level from driver)) I believe this is a problem with the system setup and less to do with LibreOffice. However, Acrobat Reader does print correctly in cases where landscape mode is not possible. Thanks for all of the help and suggestions! Cheers, Marc One final note on this. I traced the problem back to a misbehaving linux printer driver. Here are the details. NOTE: The following fix is really for users on the Mageia Linux distro, but could adapt this to your distro (except for MS Windows platform -- I am not sure if the driver is also misbehaving on the Windows platform) *** NOTE: The problem occurred with a Samsung SCX-4200 Multifunction Laser Printer. *** The problem is the driver and dependencies that was supplied with the Samsung SCX-4200; the driver is no longer supported by Samsung and this is most likely the reason why landscape mode does not work due to missing dependencies (the driver is expecting older dependencies to make landscape mode work). Please use the driver found on the OpenPrinting.org website that is maintained by the Linux Foundation[1]. The driver is called the SpliX driver (the acronym means: Samsung Printer Language -- for linux) -- SPL is a printing language that Samsung uses and that some other printer makers license from Samsung. Once downloaded (there are .deb and .rpm packages available -- Mageia uses .rpm!), double-click on your downloaded file and it will install all of the missing dependencies. After installation, test-try your printer by opening a .odt file in LibreOffice and ask for it to be printed in Landscape mode. It should work properly. If the file does not print properly, then you still have the older driver installed by default. To correct this: * open MCC (Mageia Control Centre) * left-hand panel -- click on Hardware * right-hand panel -- click on Set-up the printers ... * right-click on SamsunG-SCX-4200 ... * choose Properties * choose Maker and model-Modify * wait till system finds all of the drivers * choose Samsung * choose Next * choose Samsung SCX-4200 SpliX 2.0.0 (OpenPrinting LSB 3.2) * choose Next * CHOOSE Use this new PPD file (Postscript Printer Description) as is * choose Apply * print a test page from the MCC Printer Setup page * the output should have a line that says Make and model: Samsung SCX-4200, sPLIx 2.0.0 (OpenPrinting LSB 3.2) * Done! Test the new driver * close LibreOffice if open * open LibreOffice * create a new page in landscape mode (or open a file that is made for landscape mode) * print Hope this helps anyone else with these problems. Cheers, Marc [1] http://www.openprinting.org/printer/Samsung/Samsung-SCX-4200 (the driver is on the bottom of this page) (*** NOTE: the driver also works for a large number of Samsung, Dell, Xerox printers.
