The gist of it is that the omission* of the Horizontal Rule option has
created a problem for documents that already have such lines, i.e. it
was an *incompatible* change.

(* I see that the mission was on grounds of 'difficulty of maintenance'.
Does that mean we may see other useful facilities suddenly

[libreoffice-users] LO 4.0.3.3: 'Insert: Horizontal rule' is missing

2013-06-13 Thread Maurice Batey
Having installed Mageia-3 on a trial basis, I have come across an omission
in its LO 4.0.3.3 that I have been using on Mageia-2's LO 3.5.7.2, namely
'Insert: Horizontal rule'

The result is that any document prepared with 3.5.7.2 does not appear
correctly under 4.0.3.3.

I see from:

http://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question/14922/why-is-horizontal-line-broken-in-401/

that the omission is a deliberate change rather than accidental (although it
seems
the Help info still thinks otherwise...).

Why on earth drop a feature that people are using?
What is the rationale?

Failing any other solution to my problem, is there any way I can copy the
3.5.7.2 'ruler' file over in to 4.0.3.3 so that the latter shows the lines
properly?

I doubt it. the envelope file is just a text file with a box into

Because the HP5150's tray feed pressure bar push the paper/envelopes

Deafening silence!

For what it's worth, I solved the problem by going into
(Print) Properties/General/Printer Language Type

and changing the setting from 'PDF'to 'Postscript Level 2'.

(To make that change stick, I haahd to make a change in the file so
that it was stored with the new setting.)

So the 'PDF/Postscript 2' problem is not solved in 3.5.5.3...

2012-12-09 Thread Maurice Batey
I have a 'long-envelope' file that I use fpr printing out envelopes with
my address on the left and an addressee box on the right.

Using LO 3.4.5 under Mandriva 2010.2 I insert the blank envelope on the
RIGHT-hand side of the printer (HP5150) paper feed. Works fine.

Using LO 3.5.5.3 under Mageia-2 and the same envelope file, I have to
insert the blank envelope on the LEFT-hand side of the same printer's
paper feed.

Not a problem, but can anyone suggest an explanation for the
difference, please?

the following sequence (which worked) to achieve the change:

"Open spadmin* (printer administration) & select the printer
'Properties|Device|Printer Language type: PostScript Level 2. Close
spadmin & open LO (3.3.x or 3.4.x) and you should be ok for that
printer. You can check by closing & reopening LO & 'File|Printer

- In LibreOffice 3.3.4 you should see 'from device driver'.
- In LibreOffice 3.5.0rc2 you should see 'PostScript Level 2'."

Just one concern. Now it's OK for e.g. .xls files, which files might
then cause problems (because now using Postscipt instead of PDF)?

A workaround has been found by 'TJ' in the Mandriva newsgroup:

When in LO's 'print file', go in to Printer Settings and change
'PDF' to 'Postscript' (any level).

(Unfortunately the change does not stick, unless the document is
changed and Saved.)

The reason why OpenOffice is able to print the file perfectly is that
it already uses Postscript in the output.
  For background to that, see:

  https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=94173

where the proposed change from Postscript to PDF (to solve *other*
problems) did not make it into OpenOffice before it ws handed over to
Apache, whereas they *did* make it into LO!

Same problem reported om Mandriva and Mageia - in my case at least
with a fully-updated Mandriva 2010.2 PowerPack.

Seems what is happening is that although LO-Calc's Print Preview shows
the file in Landscape, it is sending a Portrait image to the printer,
which then barfs after reaching the "H.C." column.

Will raise bug report...

Someone in the Mandriva newsgroup thought you might be interested in
his comments:

" Can't help except perhaps indirectly, sorry File prints in LO
3.4.4 here if I have margins set to 0 and text size is right (small
enough), on two printers and computers wildly different and in Fedora
Core 16 for Linux side (modern CUPS and Gutenprint). Possibly a
Mandriva-side issue, but the single data point from Ubuntu could be even
margin defaults in drivers from older driver sets (old printer for
example).

I remember having a Epson C84 inkjet printer, and the page as driven by
a much older CUPS than 2.5.6 with Gutenprint only very limitedly linked
in had page offset in mapping (even on test page) with page offset to
left by almost an inch until I told the developer about the problem and
he and I engaged in a month-long conversation in email and the then
active linuxprinting.org (Sponsored by the then Mandrake, one of the
things that drew me to that distro to buy was their sponsored
linuxprinting.org and sponsorship of a bunch of Linux printing driver
devs) posts that ended up with the printer driver working in
CUPS-Gutenprint. I would tell him how much I had to adjust page
manually in page offsetting, and he would default that into code.

No internal offset (which during development and adjustment varied a
lot as to which way and how much) and exaggeration of size of font and
spaces and underline widths which would give a cutoff on right given
that CUPS treats everything as if it had 300 dots per inch until much
more recently with Gutenprint doing a lot of the background drivere
work for more than 1000 printers, and HPijs doing driver work for many
HP lasers. General rule, the more modern CUPS and Gutenprint are for
printing, the better more drivers are. Printer driver developers are
poor, so they tend to not afford to buy a lot of printers themselves--
the C84 was very popular in US, less so in Europe. Now that the printer
driver devs are getting more feedback faster, drivers are better faster.

He had an Epson C82 to use, donated to him, but the C84 had enough
differences that a driver had to be extremely adjusted to work with a
C84. He changed things slowly, told me when a new update was ready, and
I downloaded the updated driver set often-- I wanted to not spend
$200.00 US on a good printer to replace my C84.

The Ubuntu user might possibly benefit from this somewhat long post, so
I include it here for forwarding. Mandriva of PowerPack or 2010
varieties without CUPS and Gutenprint and driver sets updated to
current, might also have such issues."

As I said earlier, OpenOffice prints the file perfectly...

The file referenced below prints correctly under OpenOffice Writer
3.2.1, but not with LO 3.4.5.
(Tried on 2 different PC's, two different printers.)

Under LO 3.4.5, although a Print Preview is complete, the actual printed
page is missing several inches of text on the right.
(The rightmost column that is correctly printed has the header
"H.C. Points".
All that appears to the right of that are continuations of the
horizontal rulings, and the "Exp and (below) "We" text of the rest of
the document.)

Before I raise this in a Bug report, could someone here confirm that
they have the same problem, please?

So LO is taking real-time steps to avoid showing the option when
detecting use of certain desktops (e.g. KDE) in certain distributions
(e.g. Debian, Mandriva).

Perhaps it has had problems with it in those areas in the past, so
now omits it rather than defaulting it to 'off'.

I can't begin to imagine how the missing option could be due to using
KDE, but of course as I use the 'Mandriva' download file there is
always the possiblity that somehow the Mandriva download has a fault in
it.
I shall enquire in the Mandriva newsgroup.

What option in the install mechanism would have caused it to have
been installed "with an OOo user profile", Cor?

It certainly didn't pick up the user's OO templates.

   Well, when I said:

LibreOffice - General", which showed the same bunch of options I described

Are we all using the same version of LO (mine's 3.4.5)?!

OK - as you and others have described, there *are* of course ways of
importing templates (and other user info).
It's just that one has to *know* what they are, for example by
enquiring in here.

What I actually said was:

"Perhaps LO should be a little more helpful in this respect."

For example, anyone who has tried using the Google Chrome browser will
see a superb example of 'being helpful' (in this case importing Firefox
settings).

If LO doesn't feel it's important to implement an import function, it
could at least provide an 'Import Info' option that would display
the kind of techniques described in here!

The problem with that is that Import does not show 'hidden'
directories (i.e. those whose name is prefixed with a "."), and
OpenOffice's ".ooo3" directory is one of those.

Perhaps LO should be a little more helpful in this respect.

Within a bug report I have been asked to install & try LO 3.4.5, which

In fact, although I have the GB Pack installed, no spell checking
at all is happening (and I do have 'Check spelling as you type'

I wonder what the final linkup is between language pack and getting
spellchecking to work, that I have missed

Seems the grammar checker can be turned off in
  Tools/Options/Languages/Writing aids.

But there is some confusion in the taskbar buttons:

 "ABC" (with big green arrow)
A mouse hover reveals "Spelling & Grammar", but the action
seems to be to summarise a check of the whole document.

 "ABC"
A mouse hover reveals "SpellChecker", but when I click on
it, all the grammar markings disappear from the displayed
document (hurray!), i.e. it has turned off the grammar
check, even though the button is labelled 'SpellChecker'

Nevertheless, I'm happy with the latter, as I can now work in
peace until the document is finished, then click on that button
and find out what errors I might have missed...

Many thanks to all for your help. Much appreciated!

[libreoffice-users] How to migrate OpenOfficec Writer settings into LinbreOffice Writer

2010-11-30 Thread Maurice Batey
Is there a way to import such things as templates and general
settings from OpenOffice Writer to LO Writer?
   (E.g. copying certain files over)
Would be nice to avoid having to construct them all over again.

Have now done that - thank you - and Tools/Options/Languages does
show "GB" language environment.

However, the spellchecker is still happy if I use US spelling or GB
spelling, e.g. if I enter:

Harbor favor neighbor harbour favour neighbour

and hit the SpellChecker button, nothing is marked, nor was any word
flagged on text entry - even though "Check spelling as you write" is
set.

Something awry somewhere (or am I overlooking something?).

  OK - thanks, Mark!

I think what I'll do is work with grammar check 'off' until the
document is complete, then switch it on for a final grammar check.

It doesn't bother me much that the occasional word or phrase is
marked - that's not intrusive - and I would welcome it finding it
more subtle grammatical erors.
It's the marking of all the hand-made indents that I cannot
tolerate. It makes too much of a visual mess of the document.

My use of Writer is for a few general 'home' letters and such - not
a plethora of large formal documents - and I only have one style.
I do not wish to get into the complication of 'a style for this and
a style for that', etc.

In that sense I have no problem with OpenOffice Writer.
It's bossy LibreOffice that is upsetting my apple cart!

Newcomers to xxxOffice will probably also wonder what the hell all
those wiggly lines are for. Why not leave grammar check 'off' by
default; then the more professional users can use it as they wish?

They are blue - so 'grammar check'.

My observations on this:

  (1) Using OpenOffice Writer, these 'view' markings no not appear on
this document.

  (2) I don't understand why e.g. "walking tour" has been
underlined as a possible grammar error. (There is no error adjacent
to the phrase.)
(Perhaps because this LibreOffice is 'US English' rather than
the GB-English that I use?
How can that be a grammar error even in US English?)

  (3) Why is space(s)/tab before the first word of any paragraph
filled with the blue wiggly line?

I don't want to turn grammar checking off, but the marker lines at
the beginning of every paragraph are distracting...

Why is LibreOffice doing this when OpenOffice is not?

Here is an example (between the 2 "---" lines) representing
the blue marker line with the "~" character here:

[libreoffice-users] LO Bete 3.3: Strange wiggly lines when viewing a file.

2010-11-29 Thread Maurice Batey
Having just installed LibreOffice 3.3 Beta and trying Writer, all
seems fine at first, except that tabbed space at the start of lines
has been filled in with a wiggly line.
Also, a couple of phrases have been underlined with the same wiggly
line (e.g. "walking tour").

How does one switch such marking off (and why it it there)?

(Is this a suitable group for asking these questions?!)
