Re: rc2 of Apache NetBeans (incubating) 9.0 Beta is available

2018-01-15 Thread Brett Ryan
Dev would generally contain a greater number of active participants that raise
issues and are more intimately involved in the development of the given
software product. Users generally participate in the discussions on a more
academic perspective.

Most common for apache projects is to provide a status report as a requirement
which is published to the dev list containing details on activity, [VOT] topics
generally appear before a release for developer votes on readiness, and
[DISCUSS] on general direction discussions.

Apache mailing lists while casual also have a fairly structured topic format.
That said, most of the apache lists I've participated in are library based and
more recently Hadoop ecosystem based where most of the participants are quite
interested in the development of that product with use as second..

It shouldn’t be, and we should discourage its continued use. Unsupported
plugins available to provide capability is how it should be handled.

I treat svn/cvs like IE8, let’s discourage its use by not supporting. If your
starting a new project with svn or cvs you should question why.

Trimming legacy helps reduce edge cases and helps deliver value going forward
without the need to worry about edge cases.

Re: Do you use NetBeans with SVN or CVS?

2018-03-09 Thread Brett Ryan
Since CVS is an external plugin we do not need it tested. SVN on the other hand
does need to be tested as it’s still part of the core, I’ve mentioned this a
couple times now.

It is interesting hearing the commentary on perceptions of DVCS solutions (Git,
hg). Both of these are far easier to use and require no server (svn needs an
apache web server, cvs needs a proprietary server), branching/forking/merging
is so easy it’s unbelievable.

It’s important for all technology that we don’t hold back younger generations
by supporting legacy as it slows evolution of technology.

Anyway watch Linus Torvalds talk from 2007 on git at google
https://youtu.be/4XpnKHJAok8

It’s not part of NetBeans IDE though, support was removed about 6-7 years ago
to en external plugin in the plugin portal, again here’s the URL explaining it
[1]. “Base IDE” is just the name of the category the plugin lives in, which
should actually be “Team Collaboration”.

You could have only got CVS support by installing the plugin which used to
prompt you if you opened a cvs project but had to install manually to do a
checkout. But the plugin no longer appears in the plugin portal [2].

That’s not exactly what I meant. And yes, if it’s a burden to support edge
cases then the edge cases should be discouraged. Just as my analogy that IE9
has wide support to discontinue its use component developers actively encourage
this.

We should support the currently wide spread technologies and externalise
support for diminishing tech. We could focus out efforts on what other IDE’s
are doing like scala support, which the other major IDE’s support out of the
box (they don’t support CVS).

Without doing the analysis i’m not sure what the widespread use is.

When the CVS maintainers stopped working on CVS and started on SVN, they’re the
same guys, and made the same mistakes in SVN, i think it started in 2001, I
can’t even remember the last publicised book.

It won’t lose users, it never did when the plugin got dropped :)

Yes, it IS deprecated [1]. Archived features means we no longer provide direct

We would need to know more about your environment to help. Is it possible to
share your codebase when the problem occurs provided it is not private?

If you install git [1] and use the cli (git-bash) by issuing `git status` in
the project path, what do you observe?

I don’t know how you all are getting cvs. When I do a fresh install with the

Re: [ scala ] Just asking for update on Scala for NetBeans

2019-09-30 Thread Brett Ryan
I’m going to have to give this a try, I did manage building for 8.2 but it was
a lot of trouble. Was hoping i could free my time to help but it’s been hectic.

I think the whole big data community has been using intellij for scala (myself
included). There’s several reasons there. Python is big in BD due to the strong
academia influx and they all use pycharm (JetBrains) so the IntelliJ pickup is
natural for scala.

It would be neat to use scala in nb again so am keen to try. We did move away
from sbt to maven for our spark builds, wonder how that might go.

Re: Compile on Save in web applications no longer works for NB > 11.0

2020-05-06 Thread Brett Ryan
Thanks Juan. I did have it installed. I use maven projects and haven’t been on
ant for some time.

I did uninstall nb-javac as it doesn’t allow newer language features. For
example if you run with jdk14 you get record support which is a preview feature
in jdk14 (hope it sticks btw).

Compile on Save in web applications no longer works for NB > 11.0

2020-05-05 Thread Brett Ryan
Hi all, I've been wanting to switch off of NB 11.0 for some time, however;
the one thing that is stopping me is CoS is not working for web
applications.

Since moving from 11.0 the Build > Compile > Compile On Save is now greyed
out.

Static Resources".

Netbeans 12.0 - Allow Resetting SQL Output Window

2020-07-02 Thread Brett Ryan
Hi guys, wondering if there is a way to reset the query results before
execution as in prior versions of NetBeans?

I do welcome that we don't have new tabs spewing out (introduced in 11.?)
but prefer the 8.0 style of just a single output that resets before each
query execution.

When I'm executing a larger script it gets hard to figure out where the
script started in the output results, resetting would be handy.

Thanks all
-Brett

2020-07-20 Thread Brett Ryan
Anyone have a solution to this? I've been trying NB12 and liking it, apart
from it crashing randomly once a day but I haven't found the cause yet.

CoS still grayed out for war maven project using JDK 8. Any idea?

I just switched back to 11.1 (last version it works in) and it appears NB12
has deleted my 11.1 profile.

macOS with Windows Keyboard and Command and Option keys swapped

2021-12-08 Thread Brett Ryan
Greetings all, this one's been a small annoyance that I have been getting
around by using JDK 1.8.0 to start NetBeans for some time now. As JDK 1.8.0
causes NETBEANS-6272
 making
12.6 less useable with JDK 1.8.0 I finally got around to raising
NETBEANS-6273 .

My issue relates to the fact that swapping command and option keys on a
windows keyboard on macos means means that NetBeans no longer recognises
the option key being pressed by itself, however, holding option, then a
quick tap and release n shift makes NB then recognise that option is being
held.

I use this key for navigating between words like option + left/right etc.

I query if anyone is experiencing this and has some kind of other
workaround that allows use of later JDK's?
