The only thing that comes to mind due to the fact that MAC OSX only works with the 64-bit version of the Java environment is that you try to install one of the relevant MAC versions of the Libre Office software (based on OpenOffice). I know only that I installed about a year ago under Windows

How is an Operating System you use (especially 32 or 64 bit)? Which version of Java Runtime Environment you downloaded and installed over OS? Apache Open Office supports only 32-bit version of JRE. If you have installed the correct version of Java software, you must point to the Open Office JRE

I do seem to recall visiting the Java website and doing an update; but did not reselect within AOO, which at present shows only one JRE listed. However, when first getting this Win8 machine, DELL Tech Support did walk me through installations of both a 32- bit and a 64- bit JRE. I will revisit
