Andrea, I am so pleased you investigated. If I were the one who
uploaded it and someone with a different email address wanted my
document removed, I would be a bit upset it it was removed without
contacting me.

This situation provided a lesson for those who do or did not know about
meta tags (common for web pages) inserted in Adobe / MS / WP / Corel /
OO products, etal with information (as you pointed out ) about the
document's owner / creator.

You would have missed all the fun (so to speak; of course we take
things like this very, very seriously). Some investigation was needed
in this case before we destroyed traces of what had happened and, as
you will see, it was quite fruitful.

File Cover lettertammieelgammal.odt had been created by user
Drtammie. User Drtammie corresponds to the e-mail address

So: tammieelgammal AT gmail.com, whoever he/she is, created the
Drtammie account on our wiki on 27 August 2013; 15 minutes after
creating the account, he/she uploaded the file Cover
lettertammieelgammal.odt; no other activity is registered for that
user. And today the same e-mail address requested removal of that file.

File has now been removed. We had no pages linking to it or using it.

User has been blocked for an indefinite period. tammieelgammal AT

openoffice.apache.org and put in CC infrastructure AT apache.org ;

I do apologize for not being more clear about where I found the codes

Open OO Writer, find the icon that looks similar to the manual (before

Thank you for your kind request for clarification

Larry, I understand your words. For now, this is the closest OO has to
WP reveal codes.

Look closely and you will see some of the codes shown with OO are also
shown in WP reveal codes window. Point being, you don't have to have a
separate window to view / edit codes.

One other point, WP Reveal Codes are non-printable. WP usesfor
space and OO uses .; WP uses HRT for hard return and OO uses the old
symbol (pre computer) for a new paragraph.

Now tell me again how there are no similarities (include examples other
than ones I have given above). The OO's limited source has been the
topic for requesting to expand. The ability to edit is there just not
in a separate window as WP. I don't know if OO has the ability to edit
a text box but someone with more time and energy could respond.

Re: Suggestion.

2014-05-20 Thread japples
Martin, to put it more simply, you prefer to post the styles /
definitions of a document as a cheat sheet rather than see the code in
real time and where located in your document (reveal codes). Very
inefficient to take eyes off of the document to search for style
definitions then go back to document to fix the problem and possibly
create a clash with imported document or another style definition.

A more efficient way would be to have the codes seen where they are in
document and make corrections on the spot. Also, using this type of
reveal code window eliminates the possibility of creating a conflicting
style definition.

This whole thing reminds me of when I started writing web pages. In
short order I began to see how limiting wysiwyg (ie, styles) was yet I
was unable to move to a more efficient method until that mindset
changed. If the mind is closed, nothing can be accomplished.

Opening a Reveal Codes window to correct document is more efficient and
less problematic than working with styles. Per your description, a list
of styles can be opened to identify what part of the rule is creating
the problem. Reveal Codes allows to see the code causing the problem
plus eliminates guessing related to conflicting styles.

Perhaps when all the mindsets are put into neutral, an option that is
intuitive, efficient, has low risk of creating other document problems,
will come to light.

Another comparison of styles vs reveal codes is the automobile
transmissions. The manual is similar to working with style definitions
while the automatic is more like working with reveal codes.

The above is not saying adding reveal codes to OO is the thing to do;
however, those with open minds seem to be projecting a more efficient
way to handle documents.

Nor is it saying anyone understanding the value of reveal codes and
capable of the work required to add it to OO, won't be driven to drink
or start staring at spinning spiral disks in a room of alternating color
spotlights highlighting the pink spotted elephant chorus line.

So far, this conversation boils down to: use only styles which requires

Sorry if there is some confusion here, as I for one never meant to

There are however situations where styles might not help. For example,
when troubleshooting document formatting problems such as page or
section options, or when special (manual) character formatting has
been applied to styled paragraphs: this is where reveal codes can
come in handy. Also, typically, Reveal codes was used by someone
other than the original author... funny this has never been mentioned,
given that it was the main reason why we had to use Reveal codes
back when WordPerfect was the standard!

Anyhow, a (very basic) example of how this could be obtained is in the
Write/Edit Post interface in WordPress, with its two tabs (Visual |
Text). I have no idea whether this is possible in OO - but it is my
understanding that something like that is what people asking for
Reveal codes might find useful.

As WordPress demonstrates and Richard Detwiler already suggested,
these two ways of looking at a written page are not necessarily
mutually exclusive. So if they are in OO, maybe this is what needs to
be explained to us users, who do not understand, nor want to know,
about the inner workings of the program.

Lastly, and by the by: I believe the only way a programmer can take
the user's perspective is to listen to end users themselves.
Ideally... without expecting them to be computer literate or (worse)
accusing them to not put in the necessary time/effort to learn how to
use the program.

Thank you for suggesting ways how we might be able to help, as end (

Split cell - I would like to split Cell 3 into 2 cells without
increasing the width of Cells 1, 3 5 (about as difficult to explain
without pictures as defining rinse body to a deaf person using the
manual language from a different area of the country without demonstrating)

Created a calendar with fillable cells - not an online calendar nor just
a calendar to look at - interactive is the best description.

Below is a one day section from the calendar. I am not sure it will
post with the message. I do appreciate the time you have taken so far.

My question pertains to the group of cells (the next week) following
this set of 7 groups (one for each day of the week). The next week
group was created only until the 30th but the month has 31 days. The
easiest way would be so split a cell to reflect space for month day
number, special notation to right of month day number; space below these
two for notes of that day such as medical appointment; lastly section
below for tracking numbers.

Could you describe more specifically what you're trying to achieve? Is

you want this to wind up in two adjacent cells, with one cell

Yes, there is. Do Edit Copy from the cell or cells you want to copy
the format FROM, then click in the cells you want the format copied
to, and use Edit Paste Special. Deselect (uncheck) all of the
options under Selection EXCEPT for Formats.

Or, alternatively, use the Format Paintbrush tool. Select the cell you
want to copy the format from, click on the Format Paintbrush (it's on
the main toolbar; it looks like a paintbrush), then click in the cells
or range of cells you want formatted like the cell you clicked first.

start a numbered list, it works OK until 9, but for 10 and subs, it inserts a
tab space after each number, which I cannot get rid of.

Kindly send instructions, as to how I may complete
registration.

Robert

Due to a server failure there is backlog which was 9 million emails, but which
is now down to a couple of million; your response is probably still in that
backlog. I'm seeing a lag of 8-10 hours on some of my emails through that
server, which is probably controlled by a push-down stack - list in, first out.

The problem with the numbered list is that the first tab is set too close to
the digits. When one goes over 9, the indent jumps to the next tab. The answer
is simple - adjust the first tab to be a little bigger, or simple delete it, so
that the numbering, be it 1-9 or 10-99, uses the second (now become the first)
tab.

Great advice and, like you, I have never gotten malware from a download
whether OO or ?? as I always research first.

Unfortunately, your comments are kind of hindsight as these people
won't find your wise words until they start searching for someone to blast.

A quest for those of us who understand safe downloading is to help
others learn how important it is to ensure downloads are from an
official site.

I am not computer literate enough to know how to spread this type of
message. Is there something like Twitter or Facebook or ?? to pass
learning thus prevent bad experience?

from what you would expect would be malware free, but they are not. Please, ask

That sounds great, Martin.

Could a download script be smart enough to recognize (via non-editable

Flashing a warning large enough to fill at least 1/3 of the screen would

Simple enough: The ownership of the logos and trademarks is defined (First

It does seem simple when put that way, Rory; however, this page has

indicating it is part of the OpenOffice yet the wordage is This project
is not affiliated with, (n)or endorsed by, the Apache Software

remains, if the disclaimer is true, why is it on a page indicating it is
part of the Apache OpenOffice project.

I am very cautious about downloading and do appreciate your help. I

Why, pray tell, isn't this an option under 'Save As'?

I can't speak for the applications's designers, but it strikes me that
this is very sensible - indeed useful. The various formats available
at Save As are alternative ways in which a document can sensibly be
kept, with the possibility that it will subsequently be reopened and
further edited. Although PDF is an ideal format for transferring
*final versions* of documents between users and platforms, it is quite
unsuited to further editing, of course. Putting PDF in the Save As
menu might give users the impression that saving in that format would
provide the same functionality as saving in one of the normal document
formats - in this case .odt or .doc. Users might save as PDF and lose
the benefit of considerable editing time.

Consider also a user editing a file and then immediately creating a
PDF version. If PDF was an alternative saving format, there would be
no warning that the edits had not been saved if the document were then
closed. Next time the existing .odt file was opened, recent editing
would have been lost (and users would not be pleased). As it is,
exporting to PDF does not affect this protection.

I see this choice as wise.

I trust this helps.
