Basic question-Mac user

2023-10-16 Thread JD & Melanie
Is there a download compatible with Mac OS 10.12.6?
All I want to do is be able to open existing Word files and create new on a
computer that previously used Office for Mac 2011.

Thank you.

Re: Question on Apache OpenOffice

2023-08-21 Thread David Robley

Yes to both. As per answers to this question in another mailing list:

"Both programs should install side by side because they use different
default install locations.

However, the LibreOffice shell extensions could be overwritten by Apache
OpenOffice, so I would suggest to do a "Custom Install" and deselect the
"Windows Explorer Extension" found under "Optional Components". " -
Matthias Seidel

"The short answer is yes. You can install OpenOffice now. Both will
work. However there will be a "fight" to be associated with normal
office file types (such as Open Document, Word, Excel, etc) This means
that when you open a Word file with one Office (be it OpenOffice,
LibreOffice or MS Office) it will become associated with this suite and
to open with another one you will have to deliberately use the "Open
with" option. If this acceptable then you can use multiple Office
suites. If this is confusing then it is better to uninstall the one(s)
you don't use so much." - Pedro Lino

Hi there

I have looked in documentation and on the web in general, but don't seem to be
able to find what I am after. Please forgive IF this is such a newbie dumb
question..

I am inserting the date into a template (ready Made) to show date document
printed or created. I would like the dates to look like

Friday, 21st or Sat, 2nd, Sun 3rd Mon 4th .

Is there a way to have this happen within the date formatting??

Also I would like the time to show say 2345 hrs. So with Hours as text after the
time.. Is there a way to have this happen within the time formatting??

Many Thanks

Could you be a bit more specific? Otherwise we'll only guess what could
be wrong. The first question would be: from where did you get the
package and how did you install it?

Second, but equally important: What system do you have (OS)?

I'm not aware of a way to prevent a font from being embedded in an exported PDF
file, but from what I've read it seems that fonts won't be embedded if the font
licence doesn't allow it. Assuming that you know which of your fonts have
restrictive licences, have you tried exporting a document with such a font and
then checking in your PDF reader whether the fonts are embedded?

I don't know about embedded fonts in RTF files.

I just have a question about Open Office.

I want to share an rtf written file, and I know I mustn’t embed fonts
unless I am sure they are ok to embed. Are fonts automatically embedded on
an RTF file or is this not an issue?

Also, if I export a document to be a PDF, do the fonts have to be embedded
or is there a way I can prevent them from being embedded?

I basically want to share a file, ideally as a PDF, without embedding any
fonts that aren’t licensed to be embedded.

Thanks so much!

Open Office Search Question

2022-11-02 Thread Lauren Haynes
Hello,

I was wondering if there was a way to search a single number included in an
input range? For example, in a spreadsheet a user inputs a model number in
column A and a range of serial numbers in column B (see table below).

[cid:image001.png@01D8EED9.DEA88690]

Is there a way to set up the spreadsheet so that the user can search, for
example, serial number 1150 and the program will flag row 2 where the searched
serial number falls into the input range in column B?

The ctrl+F and the other search features in the program seem to only be able to
find numbers that appear as text in the document (in the image above, the
search feature would only recognize 1100 and 1200, but none of the number in
between). Is there perhaps a way to format the cells in column B as "ranges"
so that the program would be able to recognize all of the numbers in the range
without having to enter each individual serial number?

Thank you for your help,

Lauren Haynes

Hi -

The Apache OpenOffice security team has looked into the two Log4Shell
vulnerabilities. We are not impacted by them as we don’t use Apache Log4J 2.

We don't know if any third party extensions are impacted. You would need to
contact those parties if you are concerned.

Sir,
I looked up your information.
But this morning when I added a pdf photo it was put horizontally on a
vertical sheet and vetically on a horizontal sheet.

So I placed my title first and then the photo in a table below.
The writer didn't do this well with ODF photos either.

So view options, grid, ...can you explain to me exactly what you have to
tick to make sure that a photo adapts to the sheet and where I don't
have to use a table.

Hi,

when inserting a photo into a Writer document then mostly the photo
dimensions are bigger than the width of the page.
You can select the photo and resize the photo (or any other graphical
object) symetrically by pressing Shift+Strg and then selecting one of
the handles which you can see when you mouse select the photo first an
then drag the size to the size needed.

You can place a photo whereever you want by changing the anchor of that
object to 'page'. Select the photo then take look into the frame object
bar. There's an anchor symbol. By pressing this button a little menu
pops up where you can select 'page'

Hope it helps...

Kind regards, Joost

Re: Question about alphabetizing file list

2021-04-15 Thread John van Barneveld

I assume you are using Windows.

There are four headings above the file listing, Name. Date modified,
Type and Size.

Clicking on one of these will sort your list according to that label,
click again and it reverses the order. All you have to do to get the
order correct is click on "Name" and it should revert.

Subject: Question about alphabetizing file list

Greetings. First, I truly appreciate Open Office, and I thank you.

My question is about alphabetizing a list of files in a folder. For some
reason, a couple of my files are in reverse alphabetical order, i.e. from Z to
A instead of A to Z. I have hunted to see how to correct this, and cannot find
anything. It’s not a major problem, just annoying.
I find it strange, since the files are listed alphabetically in the main files
in File Explorer of the computer. It is only when I want to search files in
Open Office.
I had put this question on a forum and no one seemed to understand what I was
saying.
I look forward to your reply and appreciate your assistance.

Re: Question for Blended Learning

2020-08-03 Thread Alan B
Doris,

Following up Dan's note, here is a link I found with detailed instructions
how to install OpenOffice on a Chromebook. The article is dated July this
year so it is as current as possible.

http://www.linuxmadesimple.info/2020/07/how-to-install-openoffice-on-chromebook.html

I saw that Google Docs includes an app called "Forms". It may or may not
enable teaching the database concepts in your lesson. From the looking I
did, there didn't seem to be a way to review the underlying structure.

I also found that Google has a product called "Google Cloud Databases".
These included traditional SQL, e.g. MS SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and
others, as well as noSQL databases. There is a free option with this
product. You would have to check with Google to ask if there is an
educational option.

These two options are mentioned because Chromebooks are designed for
connected use and it generally requires some extra work, per the
instructions in the link, to install local programs on them as is done with
a traditional Windows pc/laptop.

Open Office and LibreOffice be installed on chromebook. Instructions
for installing LibreOffice are found here:
https://support.google.com/chromebook/thread/29506100?hl=en. I don's
see any reason why Open Office could not be installed the same way.
(LibreOffice is a fork of Open Office.) You might want to check out
both of these programs to see which one you might want to use. There
are also user guides that can be downloaded for free.

In case you did not know, both of these programs' license allows you to
download the installation file and then install it on as many computers
as you have. There is no cost for downloading the program either. (A
copy of the license comes with the download file.)

Martin,

The purpose of my question is this: I am working on the next edition of
my two-language dictionary and want to be able to see two views of the
same document. This is very important since in one of the views I can
enter text, whereas in the other view I can do independent searches. In
MS Word, it was a trivial matter to split the screen vertically into an
upper and a lower section.

Your suggestion of selecting New Window works like a charm! As a matter
of fact, it’s an even better solution than splitting the screen since it
gives me the scope of seeing two full versions of the same document. I
couldn’t ask for anything more than that!

Thank you very much for your email.

Steve

though, assuming it exists in OpenOffice, is how to do a split screen
in the text processor.

I don't know what the purpose of your question is, but if for example to
have one part
displaying page 1 and in the other part editing page 20 that could be
achieved by:

In the open writer document go to Windows in the top menu and select New
Window now
you have two windows of the same document and are able to scroll on both
windows to

two different pages in the same document.

I would’ve expected to find this in the “View” menu or on the vertical
scroll bar, but haven’t found it. Am I looking for something that
isn’t there or is there a way to split the screen when entering text
into a document? TIA.

The only way is to copy data from an other source e.g. from a website.
Websites have al kind of non
printable characters and you should clean the source before you paste
them into your spreadsheet.

One way is to copy the data into a writer document and use the
functionality to View non printable

characters there. Clean it and copy the result into your spreadsheet.

Steve,

We are all users just like you. You very seldom get “tech support” with free,

When you say split screen do you mean 2 consecutive pages side by side? Do you
mean 2 different documents side by side? Do you mean 2 different locations
within the same document?

I have been opening OpenOffice spreadsheet docs for years now. I'm
currently using OpenOffice 4.1.2 In the last 2 days, all of a sudden, it
asks to guide me through a registration process. A window opens which asks

Scanned images are just like photographs (bitmaps = just a series of
dots that make up a picture). To turn scanned text into editable text
you have to process the image through OCR (Optical Character
Recognition) software.
There are numerous commercial OCR packages available, but if you you
only want to convert the occasional image you might consider free
options such as:

...oops, accidentally hit send. The complete message was meant to be...

A comment about installing OpenOffice when Microsoft Office is already
installed.

Watch carefully during the installation process. At one point a question
will be asked whether to make OpenOffice the "default" program.

If you respond Yes then double-clicking one of you document files will open
it in OpenOffice. If No is selected then double-clicking one of your
documents will continue to open in Microsoft product after OpenOffice
install completes.

In either case, the default program can be changed so double-click always
opens documents in a particular program.

And if the default is not the program you wish to use for a given document
then right-click the file, select the "open with" option and click the
program you want.

You can do this using the file manager provided by your operating system

use the File | Open menu in AOO and right click to see options for
selected files. Note that you can select multiple files using
Shift+Click for contiguous files or Ctrl+Click for non-contiguous files.

Simple Question

2019-09-12 Thread Yash Arya
Hi,
I'm Yash and I really like using Open Office because it helps the users who
cannot buy the products like MS Office but the only thing I don't like about it
the functions symbol. I mean it doesn't actually matches with the Excel's while
the Google Sheets exactly matches with the Excel's. So, I would like to suggest
to please make the functions uniform for all platform. And, last but not the
least, the UI. From my side, it is pretty terrible. I really do not like that
the modern computers do have the UI as old as 10 years ago. Why don't you open
some competition so that they can take challenge in developing the software's
UI? I'll hope the software grows in the future with the best UI.
Thank You!

If no data is recoverable on your crashed computer, then all the files you (and
OpenOffice) have stored on that computer are gone. OpenOffice is not a cloud
application and keeps its files locally. If you have a remote backup, then you
can transfer files from that to your rebuilt computer. You may have edited
OpenOffice files on your laptop; if so, these can be transferred to your
rebuilt computer.
