[ovirt-users] Cluster level upgrade (from 4.3 to 4.6) and Windows VM

2023-02-01 Thread duparchy
Hi,

When trying to upgrade the Cluster level to 4.6, a popup panel says "Due to the
emulated machine change, some Windows virtual machines might lose static IP
configuration"

It is not clear if Windows VMs might be disconnected from the network right
away when clicking OK or only when restarted...

[ovirt-users] cluster level - features

2023-01-24 Thread marek

hi,

do you have tips where can i find information about new features in
cluster levels?

i found only

https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_virtualization/4.4/html/release_notes/data-center-and-cluster-compatibility-levels

there is only information "there are new features"

hard way i tried check

https://www.ovirt.org/release/4.5.0/

and found

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2021545

- Detecting if scratch disks can be extended automatically
- Detecting if host support disk format conversion
- Maybe for using qcow2 format by default to enable incremental backup by

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2033185

- e1000e

is there some "central" place ?

[ovirt-users] cluster compatibility version 4.7

2022-07-07 Thread Staniforth, Paul
Hello
When we try to complete the upgrade to 4.5.1 there is a failure to
upgrade the cluster to compatibly version 4.7

Cannot update compatibility version of Vm/Template: [HostedEngine], Message:
There was an attempt to change Hosted Engine VM values that are locked.

Also somehow the cluster had changed to Cluster Node Type of Virt only but
there was an error due to started volumes when trying to change the Cluster
from the WebUI.
I fixed this by changing it in the DB.

[ovirt-users] Cluster CPU Type

2022-05-17 Thread Colin Coe
Hi all

I'm just putting in some new servers to be used as hosts in RHV 4.3 (soon
to go to v4.4 or v4.5) but I'm having problems with the cluster CPU.

These are HPE DL360 Gen10 with "Xeon Gold 6338N". Google tells me these
are "Ice Lake" but RHV complains unless I set the cluster CPU type to
"SandyBridge".

Is this expected? What do I need to do to get these recognised as the
corect CPU type?

Thanks

[ovirt-users] Cluster and datacenter compatibility levels

2022-02-14 Thread Colin Coe
Hi all

I'm looking for a definitive answer on what each compatibility level means.

Specifically, I'm looking for:
- new features
- deprecated features
- removed features

We're on 4.3 so I'm looking for the info above on 4.4, 4.5 and 4.6

My main motivation is to ensure we don't lose SPICE support.

We actually use RHV and I logged a case with Red Hat GSS but couldn't get
the info I was after.

[ovirt-users] Cluster stuck in maintenance - Hosts not upgrading as expected

2021-05-22 Thread David White via Users
I have a 3-node hyperconverged cluster with Gluster filesystem running on RHEL
8.3 hosts.

It's been stable on oVirt 4.5.
Today, I just upgraded the Engine to v4.6.

[Screenshot from 2021-05-22 20-29-23.png]

I then logged into the oVirt manager, navigated to Compute -> Clusters, and
clicked on Upgrade.
The Status of the cluster does have an exclamation mark that says "Upgrade
Cluster Compatibility Level", but my understanding is, I shouldn't do that
until all 3 of my hosts have been upgraded.

Looking at active tasks, I see that the first host in my cluster is stuck in
"Upgrading".
It's now been like this for 3 hours, without any visible progress.

If I try to launch a VM that is not configured for high availability, the VM
fails to launch, and I get a message about the cluster being in "Maintenance
Mode" and that none of the hosts satisfies current scheduling restraints.
How do I
a) Cancel / clear the upgrade and take the cluster out of "maintenance mode"
b) Properly upgrade the cluster, since clicking the "Upgrade" button clearly
didn't work?

Thanks,
David

[ovirt-users] Cluster level 4.5

2021-04-28 Thread Don Dupuis
What version of libvirt is required for a host to be put in this cluster
level? I am using CentOS 8.3 and cpu is Cascade Lake Server. It says that
my host is only compatible with cluster version 4.2,4.3 and 4.4. I am doing
a new install of Ovirt 4.4.5. I have tried to update libvirt version but
have run into issues. Currently installed libvirt
is libvirt-6.0.0-28.module_el8.3.0+555+a55c8938.x86_64.

[ovirt-users] Cluster compatibility version 4.5 on oVirt 4.4

2020-11-11 Thread tfe...@swissonline.ch

Hi

Today, I upgraded oVirt from 4.3 to 4.4.3.

After the upgrade, I upgraded the compatibility from 4.3 to 4.4.

I noticed that the cluster config is offering me another upgrade of the
compatibility to version 4.5.

Up until now, I was under the impression that the compatibility version
must match the oVirt version.

I am now reluctant to upgrade the compatibility to 4.5, while my oVirt
version is still at 4.4 (there is no oVirt 4.5 at this time).

Is it safe to upgrade the compatibility in any case, or are there
certain circumstances, where we should refrain from upgrading it?

I wasn't able to find anything in the documentation.

Kind regards

Toni Feric

[ovirt-users] Cluster CPU type update

2020-01-03 Thread Morris, Roy
Hello,

I'm running a 4.3 cluster with 56 VMs all set to default cluster and the
cluster itself is set to Intel Westmere Family. I am getting a new server and
retiring 3 old ones which brings me to my question.

When implementing the new host into the cluster and retiring the older hosts. I
want to change the CPU type setting in the cluster default to Broadwell which
is what my new 3 host cluster will be. To make this change, I assume the
process would be to turn off all VMs, set cluster cpu type to broadwell, then
turn on VMs to get the new CPU flags?

Just wanted to reach out and see if someone else has had to go through this
before and has any notes/tips.

Best regards,
Roy

Hi,

[ovirt-users] Cluster upgrade with ansible only upgrades one host then stops

I have a three node HCI setup, running 4.2.7 and want to upgrade to 4.2.8.
When I use ansible to perform the host updates for some reason it fully
updates one host then stops without error, it does not continue upgrading
the remaining two hosts. If I run it again it will proceed to upgrade the

perhaps the command I'm using to run ansible needing to specify all hosts
to run against. I don't understand why it's not upgrading all hosts in one
single run. Here is the complete ansible output of the last run, in this

[ovirt-users] cluster 4 pc's for more scanning power?

2018-11-30 Thread Peter C.
Hello and sorry for the ignorance behind this question. I've been reading about
various scale out, "hyper convergence" solutions and want to ask this about
oVirt.

I do vulnerability scanning on my company's assets. I do it from an obsolete
laptop that was given to me. The load goes over 13 sometimes, and the scans
take a long time.

If I built an oVirt cluster from 4 or 5 desktop pc's, build VM to run OpenVAS,
would the cpu load demanded by the scanning be spread accross the 3-4 hosts,
not inlcuding the management host, and therby give my scans more CPU power?

If not oVirt, is there another project that would be better suited to what I'm
trying to achieve?

Qualifiers:
-I'm not asking if this is the best way to get high-load scanning done. I'm
just asking if I'll get the combined power from the cpu cores of all the host
machines. The scanning jobs thread already.
-I know it would probably be more efficient to get a powerful multi core
workstation or server to do this. That is not my question.
-The pc's are perfectly good, they are just not being used and won't be used
for anything else.

Thanks in advance.

[ovirt-users] Cluster compatibility 4.1 to 4.2 upgrade

2018-05-08 Thread Demeter Tibor
Dear Listmember,

I've just upgrade to my ovirt-hosted-engine from 4.1 to 4.2.3. It was
successful, but it saw " Data Center XYZ compatibility version is 4.1, which is
lower than latest engine version 4.2. Please upgrade your Data Center to latest
version to successfully finish upgrade of your setup."

My first question is that, it need to do BEFORE or AFTER the node upgrades?

I haven't upgrade my nodes yet, because after upgrade the live migration does
not work with some VMs. It seems only affected those VMs that's have big (>8GB
) memory. It counting to 99 percent and after a while just stopped.
At this moment I can't stop my affected, productive VMs, so I can't do the
upgrade of nodes.
I just wondering, if i do the upgrade to 4.2 , that's maybe repair my the live
migration function?

What can I do?

Centos 7.4, NFS storage, 4 nodes, Hyperconverged hosted engine.

Thanks in advance,
Tibor

why not? You are the one selecting teh VM’s CPU…why not use Nehalem too?

running VMs will change on their power cycle. Unless you used per-VM CPU Type
override (I suppose you did not)

if all your hosts support it

not sure I understand the question. Normally you can use any CPU as long as it
is supported by all hosts in the cluster. You can use per-VM override to bypass
that, but that’s usually not a good idea

[ovirt-users] Cluster Processor Change

2018-04-07 Thread Clint Boggio
Forgive me if this is a duplicate, as I had spam filter problems previously
when I sent this inquiry.

Environment Rundown:

OVirt 4.2
6 CentOS 7.4 Compute Nodes Intel Xeon
1 CentOS 7.4 Dedicated Engine Node Intel Xeon
1 Datacenter
1 Storage Domain
1 Cluster
10Gig-E iSCSI Storage
10Gig-E NFS Export Domain
20 VM’s of various OS’s and uses

The current cluster is using the Nehalem architecture.

I’ve got the deploy two new VMs that the current system will not allow me to
configure with the Nehalem based cluster, so I’ve got to bump up the
architecture of the cluster to accommodate them.

Before i shut down all the current VMs to upgrade the cluster, I have some
questions about the effect this is going to have on the environment.

1. Will all of the current VM’s use the legacy processor architecture or will I
have to change them ?

2. Can I elevate the cluster processor functionality higher than the underlying
hardware architecture ?

3. In regards to the new cluster processor, will all of the processor
architectures below the one I choose be an option for the existing and future
VMs ?

I apologize for the long post and I hope that I haven’t left out any vital
information.

Ah, right, yes, if you do not have anything else running then it’s failing on
one of those Down VMs. If you have a lot of them a direct db query might be
fastest to find out (we’re still working on improvement to log the actual VM
name that failed)

The problem is that it is the hosted-engine itself that is blocking the
upgrade. There is only one VM running but maybe there is one of the
shutdown VMs that is blocking this. Will have a look at all of them and
save their config to see if that helps.

Is that an old VM, perhaps from 3.5 or even earlier? Has it been restarted
since? Can you shut it down now and rerun after the cluster change? That would
likely be the most simple resolution.
If there are troubles even after the VM is Down try to edit and swithc console
from VNC to SPICE or vice versa and run again

[ovirt-users] Cluster upgrade from 3.6 to 4.1 fails

2017-03-17 Thread jvdwege
As per the subject I'm trying to upgrade my ovirt install and sofar the
upgrade has been smooth.
I'm running hosted-engine in Centos7.3 and my hosts are running Fedora24
now with ovirt-4.1
If I try to upgrade my cluster from version 3.6 to 4.0 or 4.1 I receive
an error message and can't find a solution using google. First I get the
following message:

All running VMs will be temporarily reconfigured to use the previous
cluster compatibility version and marked pending configuration change.
In order to change the cluster compatibility version of the VM to a new
version, the VM needs to be manually shut down and restarted.
There are 1 running VM(s) affected by this change.

Are you sure you want to change the Cluster Compatibility Version?

Yes, I want to change version :-) so I click OK
I then get the following error message:

Error while executing action:

* Cannot edit Cluster. Illegal number of monitors is provided, max
allowed number of monitors is 1 for VNC and the max number in the
ValidNumOfMonitors configuration variable for SPICE.
* Cannot edit VM. Illegal number of monitors is provided, max allowed
number of monitors is 1 for VNC and the max number in the
ValidNumOfMonitors configuration variable for SPICE.

Anyone has seen this before and is able to help?

Thanks,

Not immediately.

Doing this will let you use the new features.

Each engine version has a set of supported compatibility levels.
If you run engine-setup and have a cluster/DC with a too-old level,
it will refuse to upgrade.

You'll definitely need hosted-engine downtime, but that's usually not
an issue. For your other VMs, not sure - I think that if you get a mark
saying they should be rebooted, they should. See also:

[ovirt-users] Cluster compatibility version and major upgrades

2017-02-28 Thread Chris Adams
Hello again, still working on my upgrade from 3.5...

I'm trying to understand the cluster compatibility version setting and
how that applies to major upgrades. Do I have to always raise the
compatibility version when I do a major upgrade? In other words, when I
upgrade from 3.5 to 3.6, do I need to raise it to 3.6 before I upgrade
to 4.0 (and then again raise it 4.0 before upgrading to 4.1)?

It looks like the 3.6->4.0 EL6->EL7 migration requires the cluster
compatibility level to be at 3.6 (if I'm reading things right).

It appears that when I upgrade to 3.6, I will have to stop all running
VMs to raise the compatibility version (and I found an open bug about
whether that's possible with the hosted engine). It sounds like with
4.0, the VMs can be flagged for compatibility and I can reboot them
individually. I have over 80 VMs, many behind a load balancer (for HA
and load sharing), but taking them all down will obviously still
interrupt service for a while.

Is there a safe way around that?

I saw someone mention they partitioned their servers and made a new
cluster (with the new version), and migrated VMs from cluster to
cluster. Can I do live migrations in that case? How do I get the
hosted engine from one cluster to another (especially with starting at
3.5)?

Re: [ovirt-users] Cluster policy question

2016-01-14 Thread Martin Sivak
Hi,

evenly distributed takes only the CPU load into account (memory was
added in 3.6). If most of the VMs are doing nothing there is no key to
use for balancing.

Also we only start automatic balancing once the overload threshold is
reached (80% load by default) on a host. And we move VMs from
overloaded to underloaded hosts.

The picture in the following link might explain that a bit although we
created it for the memory case, the CPU based loading obeys the same
rules.

[ovirt-users] Cluster policy question

2016-01-11 Thread gflwqs gflwqs
Hi list!

I am running ovirt 3.5.2 with 3 identical nodes.
I am using the default cluster policy: "evenly_distributed"
I am wondering how that applies?
When i add new vm:s should'nt they be distributed according to the
resources used on them?
Should they not be live migrated automatically?
For me it seems that all vm:s is started on one of the hosts and stays
there?
Is there something i am missing here?

Thanks!

My Setup looks like this ,

*Hosted Engine1* : Installed with centos 6.7 64Bit CPU sandy Bridge and

*Hosted Engine2* : Installed with centos 6.7 64Bit CPU sandy Bridge and
Default cluster is in oVirt engine Belongs to sandy bridge.

*oVirt Engine* : Installed with Centos 6.7 64 Bit , its hosted in the
hosted engine1 or 2.

*oVirt node*: Installed with the version oVirt Node Hypervisor release 3.5
(0.999.201509102313.el7.centos) belongs to Intel Nehalem Family

so as per your update we can't migrate the oVirt Engine to the node which
has the version installed 3.5 (0.999.201509102313.el7.centos ?

The log seem to be pretty clear about that, and there are messages even in UI

Message: Not possible to mix RHEL 6.x and 7.x hosts in one cluster. Tried
adding oVirt Node - 3.6 - 0.999.201510261021.el7.centos host to a cluster with
RHEL - 6 - 7.el6.centos.12.3 hosts.

and indeed separate problem with CPU mode, your cluster requests sandybridge
but your host is older

You need to keep same RHEL versions within cluster, and if you want to use
older HW you need to lower the cluster requirements

for normal VMs - as long as the cluster compatibility is the same you can
migrate a VM from your el6-only cluster to a new el7-only cluster - from el6
host to el7 host (using the special cross-cluster migration, both clusters need
to be set up the same (storage, networks, etc))

Note you can do that only one way from el6 to el7, and in cluster levels 3.5 or
3.6.

AFAIK you can't migrate the engine vm to a hypervisor (host or node) that is
not a hosted-engine host. you'd need to deploy the node as a hosted-engine
host. ovirt-node allows this too in 3.5+, see e.g.:

Adding Sandro, as perhaps it is related to hosted engine in any way.
Conceptually, you can't mix centos6 and 7 in the same cluster, in case
that's what you did.

Seems like you've mixed different versions in the same cluster, which is
the reason the host is non-operational.
What's the OS type and version of the hosts in your cluster?

[ovirt-users] Cluster comms error, can't migrate

2015-03-19 Thread Mike
Hi Everyone

I have a two node hosted engine cluster that's been running for a month
or two.

NFS is used for the VM's shared off the nodes on a second network
interface with different hostnames, I hope easier to migrate later on.
NFS 172.16.67.0/24 ov1-nfs.domain.dom on .1 and ov2-nfs.domain.dom
on .2. The NFS shares are working.

Management net is 10.10.10.224/28

Last night the cluster had communication errors, but I could not find
any issues, all nodes can ping ssh with each other and engine.

Today, it got worse, the engine migrated all but 3 VM's to OV2, the node
hosting the engine. The VMs still on OV1 are there because the migration
for those failed. I can't manually migrate anything back to ov1. I
eventually shut down the engine and started on OV1, but still no joy.

The VMs are alive, both on OV1 OV2. OV2 is currently in local
maintenance to stop the engine moving and stop the email alerts.

I have been through the logs, I see there be a cert issue in
libvirtd.log on
the receiving host?

The web interface cert has been changed for a CA issued one several
weeks ago, this is working and I monitor the manager using nagios via
the API. This is still working. I did not change any of the other
internal oVirt PKI stuff.

The portal is working to view the VMs and config, but I haven't tried
changing anything during this issue apart from trying the migrate. The
VMs are providing public services, so I have not tried changing things.

Linux ov1.domain.dom 2.6.32-504.3.3.el6.x86_64 #1 SMP Wed Dec 17 01:55:02 UTC

I wasn't aware of mom.log, thanks! :-) After another host reboot
and a manual Sync MOM Policy it seems like the setting finally came
through:

2014-10-19 15:57:18,211 - mom.Controllers.KSM - INFO - Updating KSM
configuration: pages_to_scan:64 run:0 sleep_millisecs:10

Now the ksmd process is still there, but it remains idle.

Indeed ksmd process will always be there. The ultimate place to check
whether it's working or not is /sys/kernel/mm/ksm/run file. 1 for
running and 0 for sleeping. mom.log is reflecting its value and MoM
process will change it as needed.

I've tried this multiple times before upgrading to 3.5.0 GA
today. Maybe it was broken between RC and GA.

I'll keep an eye on this and open a BZ in case the setting will
change again.

It will have effect next host change to Up state (i.e. from Maintenance
or from a reboot). Anyway, you can force the policy to have effect on
the fly: select the cluster, click in Hosts sub-tab, select the host(s)
 and click Sync MOM Policy.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work for me. Everytime I restart vdsmd
it will automatically start ksm again (and ksmd starts consuming CPU).

I couldn't find anything ksm-related in vdsm.log. Is there a way to
debug this? I strongly assume that the KSM Custer setting isn't working
as expected.

FWIW, I've just upgraded to oVirt 3.5.0 GA and test this setting again.

Hi Frank,
KSM is controlled by MoM, which gets its policy from the engine through
VDSM. MoM will call ksm directly as needed when needed. If you choose
to disable it the policy needs to get updated.
Can you please check your mom logs and see if there are any errors there?

I wasn't aware of mom.log, thanks! :-) After another host reboot
and a manual Sync MOM Policy it seems like the setting finally came
through:

2014-10-19 15:57:18,211 - mom.Controllers.KSM - INFO - Updating KSM
configuration: pages_to_scan:64 run:0 sleep_millisecs:10

Now the ksmd process is still there, but it remains idle.
I've tried this multiple times before upgrading to 3.5.0 GA
today. Maybe it was broken between RC and GA.

I'll keep an eye on this and open a BZ in case the setting will
change again.

Re: [ovirt-users] Cluster settings: KSM Control not working?

2014-10-19 Thread Doron Fediuck
Thanks Frank.
No need for manual sync if the cluster policy is set, the engine will update
the police when the host moves to status up.

[ovirt-users] Cluster settings: KSM Control not working?

2014-10-09 Thread Frank Wall
Hi,

while testing oVirt 3.5 RC I've came across this cluster setting:

Optimization - KSM control - [X] Enable KSM

I guess it's related to Kernel Same-page Merging.
Since KSM is a bad idea in my case (really slow CPUs), I've disabled
this Cluster setting, expecting oVirt to disable KSM on each oVirt Node.
But KSM is still running and consuming a lot CPU.

1) What is the expected result for this setting?
2) And how do I completely and permanentely disable KSM on oVirt Nodes?

It will have effect next host change to Up state (i.e. from Maintenance
or from a reboot). Anyway, you can force the policy to have effect on
the fly: select the cluster, click in Hosts sub-tab, select the host(s)
and click Sync MOM Policy.

2) And how do I completely and permanentely disable KSM on oVirt Nodes?

This setting is permanent.

you probably need qemu-kvm-rhev
rhel6.5 just added to qemu-kvm recently, seems like
qemu-kvm-0.12.1.2-2.367.el6 by greping the git log.
