I'm working with vpopmail-5.3.20 attempting to
create domains for a brand new mail server, and it's not playing very
nice. When running the vadddomain command, I get the response that the
domain already exists. When trying to run vdeldomain, I'm told there is no
domain with that name.
So,

Hi,
Because vpopmail uses a hashing algo after a certain number of users and
starts creating 1 character sub directories to store new users in.
So, the info in vpasswd would conflict with those subdomains.
A work around is to create a user with more than 1 character and then
create a .qmail-x

and voila: you can use single letter usernames.
