I have been absent for over the past year (since I meistered a 35. four
different forums flyswap. Since then I have been hospitalized in the VA six
times (from 3 days to 16 days). I was getting extremely confused and forgetful
due to a sodium imbalance. I have to have weekly blood tests, can't drive, run
my boat, and have become basically disabled. They found I had HEPC, Ascites,
and Conjestive Heart failure with 70% blockage in some arteries. I have to use
a cart to get anywhere level. I was a sick puppy for awhile. Lost 30 more
pounds Three years ago 280 - today 155. I have a serious water retention
problem ( in 10 days went from 157 to 203) and have had some episodes of PTSD.
The VA is taking fairly good care of me.

I just started tying again. My standard marabou mini-jigs (1/64. 1/80, 1/100
1/120 sizes) using Artic Fox and polor bear. When I tie 20 more, I will move
on to my trolling flies that in the spring, work great.

I sent to the POC's over 2000 flies for our disabled service members and
Casting for Recovery. Most still had toetags on.

Due to my health I have to reduce my supplies and on the traders forum you will
see some old fly tying mags for sale as well as an Original SXears Ted Williams
fly fishing outfit that is MINT and appears never used.. Keep checking as I
have lots of stuff (NEW) to get rid of.

May your God br your fishing partner.

Dono is right. That is the Gov's way to block suspected spam. Any more than 20
addresses usually get blocked. They have a great 24hr a day security system. I
use AVG, Microsofts built in Anti-Viruss and Spamfighter.

That's a spam protector, as that's what they do. You need to transfer all to a
folder in your address book.

[VFB] FW: My health

2010-07-04 Thread jim phillips

Below is what I sent to family

May your GOD be your fishing partner.

 Date: Wed, 23 Jun 2010 20:03:09 -0700

As most of you, my friends, know, I have been having some serious health
problems. First it was diabetes, then I went through the Hep C combo treatment
program until my viral load was undetectable. I have never been so sick. Tired,
lost weight (157), depressed and dreams from Viet Nam. I was added to the
transplant list for my liver. I started the required tests and then I got
really sick. I developed Ascities and had to go in weekly to have excess fluid
drained from behind my stomach - 6 liters each week was removed. They did the
TIPS procedure where they put a shunt on the hepatic artery (it worked for
awhile). I was going in 1-3 times a week for Blood Tests and to see one of six
doctors. I have had numerous X-rays, CAT Scans, MRI's and every x-ray type test
there is. Was scheduled for My teeth to be pulled but then they found out about
my heart. They will do NO surgery/procedures as they feel that I would be at
high risk to have a heart attack during the operation. During one of the tests
they were going to put a shunt on my main heart artery and that's when they
found 7 arteries/veins blocked from 70-90%. I have seen social workers for PTSD
(need help here) have to get more information and then I can see the
Psychiatrist and geriatric home care.

Now during all this I had close to 20 hospital stays (just got out Monday after
four days). I am fighting high sodium (I do not use salt) and when it goes to
high, I do not know what I am doing. I become confused, forgetful, and loose my
equilibrium. I use a cane daily, a walker when we go shopping (if I have any
energy to shop) and will be getting an electric scooter in a couple of months.
All but one, I don't know that I was in the hospital for three -five days. I
pissed in ER, had bowel movement in my room, tried to kill the nurses and do
not remember anything (STILL) They had to move me to different room do to other
patient's complaints. The last couple of days I became lucid and was usually
released on the fifth day.
My poor wife has to transport me to the VA as we do not have ambulance service
that is affordable. We live 60 miles from the VA Hospital and it has become
very expensive. This has been the longest period out of the hospital all year.
It has been hell on me. I take this liquid that is so sweet and sickening so
but it makes me more like I was in addition to giving me diarrhea (they want me
to have three to four bowel movements a day to cleanse my system, So I pee and
shit a lot daily (one day 11 bowel movements. Still am slow but it is better
than before. Six weeks ago I was hospitalized for 16 days due to excessive

Don is having brain surgery today (assuming they can find his brain
 instead of Buggs' or Veronica's).

Don has been having severe pain from trigeminal neuralgia, which is a
pain more severe than about any other pain a person can have. To
correct it, they are going to have to open his skull and work past
his brain (actually move it aside) to get to the trigeminal nerve.
Once there they will correct the problem. I assume that means clip
the nerve. Then they will reassemble his skull.

It will be a 2 hour (plus or minus) surgery and he'll be in the
hospital at least a couple of days. In the good old days he would
have been in the hospital a week or two.

If anyone wants to send a card, contact me and I'll send you an
 address this evening OFF-LIST.

[VFB] Will be out of the net next week.

2010-03-13 Thread jim phillips

Next Tuesday - Friday I will be in the Reno VA Hospital haveing the TIPS
procedure done to releive the fluid that continueeouly builds up weekly. Each
week, they remove from 3-6 liters of excess fluid caused by my liver not
processing right. The will go thru my major artery and place a Shunt around
the Heptic Vein and this will have the fluid go directly to my Kidneys to be
voided.

They also are starting to set up and do the testing necessary for me to get my
new liver.

This has been the worst year of my life (even Nam was better). I am so sick of
being sick, depressed, no energy and so on.

God love you as I do. Take care and keeep me in your prayers. I will update as
possible.

PS

TC: could you send me a sample of the consent form you need. I just can not
think clearly enough to follow what you said last week.

Spyder: What do you need from me for the write-up as a CEAP?

Luv and kisses to all.

2010-02-05 Thread jim phillips

Since returning from the hosp, I have been seen over 100 viruses from friends.
Please understand that if it is not already open; I will not open it.

I do not Jitter, facebook, or all those other personal identity muchers.

As you can see, I am feeling a bit better. Once a week we go to the VA to have
2-3 liters of fluid withdrawn from behind my stomach. A 160 lb man with a
basketball gut. Sort of funny

I am know seeing a psyc for PTSD and other dreams. My virual load for Hep C is
0, bp is normal with no meds, chlorestral is normal. Now to keep my water
drinking to 20 mil per day and increase the sodium in my body, I should be OK
until I get the transplant scheduled in Portland.

Lance

First off, I did not Flame You!. If you feel as if I did; sorry. Not my
intention. My intention was to inform our group of what happened to me. I have
AVG plus Microsoft anti-virus programs. It went thru both of them.

When I opened the company site; my PC went down. Coincidence? Microsoft
infromed me that I may of had some thing that were activated by something on
that site. I am not up on all this and just want a good running PC. Again, my
intention was to inform our group of what happened to me.

Also, If you check my response to Tony; I said (paraphrasing): Lance did not
do this on purpose.

None of us would unless we were sicko's intending to mess with good folks.

Anyways, please, feel free to flame me publicly for any of your lifes troubles
especially if your dog should

ever happen to take a dump on your carpet too. =) Unnecessary!

This will be my last comment on this. I do not have the energy for Sophmoric
responses.

I built a light box using Kyle Hand's instructions on the McFeathers.com site,
however I had a shadow behind bog streamers, so this year I picked up a ring
flash. It solved the shadow problem and I can use it at shows with a piece of
mat board as a background. Actually I watched someone photograph everyone
tying at Conclave and went to see just what he was using, sweet idea.

And don't look for a Brand name ring flash, the Nikon one is out of sight price
wise, but there are a couple of ones in the $100 area, that work just as well

We just went thru a severe storm last week here in the west. We received 18
here at the Sierra Base and above 5000' they received 2-6 ft and more of snow.
Now we are battling frozen fog, ice and cold wind. Water pipes are feezing all
over the place. Get all your quilts out, store up some heating supplies, easy
to prepare food, your tying supplies and train your dog to lay on your feet.

Merry Christmas all!

[VFB] Catskill Dry Flys

2009-12-02 Thread jim phillips

Singlebarbed

Steely resolve in the face of the Perfect Feather

Posted: 01 Dec 2009 11:02 PM PST

Per request I’ll continue to post additional fly beautification tips in a
weekly format. These will comprise hardscrabble lessons learned somewhere after
beginner and before complete mastery.

Most tiers that tiptoe around the craft use their fishing instincts when no
instructor or book is available. Most of us started as dry fly fishermen and
it’s not surprising that most new fly tiers attempt the dry fly more often than
nymphs.

… which is too bad. Tying nymphs is far more forgiving than the delicate and
strictly proportioned Catskill dry. A novice tier can hold up some lumpy
looking stonefly and if critiqued can respond with “ … well, all the stoneflies
in _ Creek are fat.”

… and if I had been the unfortunate to task the fellow – I’d blush like hell
and backpedal in a hurry – never having fished over “fatty” Plecoptera …

The Catskill dry is completely unforgiving. It’s territory and techniques have
been practiced for more than a hundred years – and artistic license must be
defended, even for expert tiers.

One of those oft-mentioned-quickly-forgotten principles is made more difficult
in the presence of the Perfect Feather …

Above are two examples of the Perfect Feather; a foot long #16 grizzly saddle
hackle, and a well marked (lefty) Wood duck flank feather with perfect tips.
Both are treated with awe by the owning fly tier – and both can cause your fly
to suffer cruelly if you’re not diligent…

You’re a kid in a candy store, all those precious tips are in a straight line
and unbroken. Giddy, you fail to clip the center stem because it’s perfect too.

You forgot that all feathers are either a left or a right, even foot long
saddles and untouched Wood duck flank.

The wood duck will be your undoing twice. In the first case the stem will cock
one wing to the left, and in the second, the stem center will retain 9 or 10
fibers attached and you’ll have to compensate by yanking fibers from the far
wing to the near side to equalize that natural bulk.

The picture at right shows the Perfect feather now clumped together with the
center stem included. Note how all’s well – there’s no clue that anything is
other than perfectly straight.

You’re thinking of dumping all your “lemon-dyed mallard” – as the sight of the
wood duck with its pristine coloration, fine markings, and perfect tips – make
it so much more pleasurable to work with – even justifying the hideous cost to
lay in a goodly supply.

Unfortunately like Ulysses and the Sirens – their song is so beautiful, you’re
ignoring the approaching rocks …

Now you can see why you remove the center stem. The left side is thin and has a
different angle than the right wing.

The cause is simple. You had to pull the loose fibers over to the right side to
balance the two clumps – leaving the left, just the stem section. It’s thin
because the fibers are attached to the center spine and have no “give” to move
around.

We were lured onto those rocks consciously …

The picture at right shows the same wing as before. I’ve removed the wing from
the shank, clipped out the center stem and retied it back on.

Note the difference with the picture above. the left wing is relaxed, the
right wing is less dense and tighter – as you didn’t have to pull everything to
that side to compensate for the stem on the left.

That foot-long Grizzly saddle is just as bad. You’re used to applying six or
eight turns of hackle to your dry flies, but the lure of virtually unlimited
hackle means you add four or five extra wraps and crowd the head. Crowding
means fibers trapped in the knot that’ll wick the head cement right into the
eye.

It’s the lure of the Perfect Feather. You won’t find it mentioned in any tome
or DVD, and only your steely resolve to overcome it’s sweet song …

[VFB] Re: Chunking Winding vs Fly Fishing - Food for thought

2009-11-24 Thread jim phillips

I troll with a 5 weight nine ft fly rod (St Croix) that was converted to a
casting/trolling setup. I use mostly my hand tied trolling flies but have used
small lures (Rainbow Runners in Flo Orange or Red, F3 Orange Rapalas,) The
Eagle lake Trout hit the flies more often than not.

In the winter, I used a 8ft UL spinning rod and small (164/1/80 and 1/100)
marabou or artic fox jigs in various colors. I have been known to dunk inflated
nightcrawlers also These are the only trout I eat.

I have an old 5-6w I use for Bass fishing and have loads of fun with it. Use
mostly Leech patterns, rabbit zonkers and some hair bugs.

For steelhead, I use a nine weight with floating line and Steelhead Streamers.

For Blue Gill - firecrackers! A 3 weight or 6' UL spinning rod.

For the local streams, I use my 1-2 weight or a 3 weght.

Whatever works, - WORKS!

 JimmyD et al,

Being a bow hunter (long time ago), I often chose to do thing the 'hard way'
to make it more challenging. Some bowhunters shoot from blinds at game 20'
feet away. Why take up a challenge and then make it easy? And I also
gun-hunt and prefer to stalk. Flyfishing for billfish is like bowhunting
for bull elk or bear. An added amount of challenge plus a little danger to
the pursuer from the pursuee adds to the adrenaline rush. Billfish will
attack the boat, and if they were smarter, they'd aim at the fisherman.

I do eat my catch and my kills, with fish on occasion. I love the taste of
lake-raised trout, and will eat all of them. River trout I let go. Little
bitty creek brookies go well with hash-browns in the morning.

I posed the following about CW vs Fly Fishing to the VFB in 2002. Tho't
I'd post again, seeing as how we have severall new members on our list
  since then.

  JIMMY D

Too me, the generalization that fly fishers are looked upon as a tweedy,
pipe smoking, creel carrying and snobbish angler is completely off base.
Many of us fly fishers perceive this to be the way we are viewed by
others who prefer to catch their quary by a different means. Sure, some
of the bearded chunking winding good ole boy bass hunters in their
$30,000 bass boats feel that way about us, but I don't think the average
CW guy is all that different from us fly fishers. I have many friends
who are among that fishing fraternity, and have found them more curious
about my fly fishing and how I do it, than looking down their nose at me.
Maybe it's because I still own my big bass boat, have a beard, drink a few
beers and still chunk and wind on occasion.

I've converted more than one good ole boy bass fisherman to fly
fishing. All it takes is a good size bass on a 4 wt. or a bull
bluegill an a 2 wt. Their first remark after is,When are you going to
take me trout fishing? Each September for the last 12 years, I've
taken a few close friends to New Mexico for a week-long trout expedition.
Some of them still do a lot of CW, but the highlight of their fishing
year is the NM trip for browns, bows and cutts using little flea rods
that I built for them. You recon that we fly fishers have been looking
down our collective noses at the CW guy. Kind of like the Pheasant hunter
looking down his nose at the Coon hunter. ;~)) Two completely different
types of hunting, but hunting just the same.

How many of you still do some CW? Awww, comon - fess up!

  Have A Great Day

  JIMMY D. Moore
I FISH BECAUSE I MUST! More importantly, I fish because
  my Dad taught me!

When I first bought and started using this PC - ALL my images, jpegs etc were
to large. My daughter brought the computer geek from work and in five minutes;
all images were in range and viewable.

ALL I said was it worked for me BUT MAY not for others and implied that it
could be thier settings. That is the first place I would have looked at (all
parties).

If Tony has a problem with what I said; let him respond to me and Mark. That is
not your responsibility!

In fact, it is time to drop the subject and go offline direct. I, for one, an
getting tired of seeing 40 resposes from one person. It was so nice for a year
or so.

Thing is though, you can downsize a pic in 30 seconds, and that way the ppl
looking at the pic don't have to scroll back and forth, right and left to see
the pic of the flies, Chuck

yeah, i know.at least to some degree that's the
problem..but hell, if i can get to where one GOOD pic is all
i need, then that won't be a problem...not to mention down-sizing
is just one more thing that takes time and makes the whole process just that
much more time consumming and a pain in the ass.
tye the fly.take the pic.etc., etc., etc., etc.,..by the time
your getting some feedback..jesus h., you've got How much time

i shouldn'ta done it...i shouldn'ta done it...i shouldn'ta done
it...lmao. But i just couldn't help myself.lol. i just sent
$60 to Montana and my guy with the Reinholds, for one Noble P #1. That's bout
an 8/0.with a fairly long shank.
i got a William Harrison Bartleet (also a Reinhold) 10/0 from him back on May
1st in Ellensburg at the Washington State Fly Fishing Fair, (which is actually
the FFF Washington State Council Conclave), for $40. He was asking $45 and i
was sposed to buy him a burger (which never happened) to make up the diff, lol.
So i figure i got the Noble P for $55 and he finally got his $5 lmao. That 10/0
i got back on May 1st.could bring $65 to $70 now. It's a Gold Lable. i
can't believe how these puppies just keep goin' up and up. He's got 4 more on
ebay right now if anyone's lookin'..they're all Traditionals, not
Exhibitions or Gold Labes. Ron sold his Traditionals as traditionals because he
considered them not Perfect. The only differenca between them and the
Exhibitions were very tiny minute flaws that only he could see. The Exhibtions
always came wraped in a Gold Lable paper, which is why they are sometimes
refered to as Gold Labels. He also used to sell (for a number of years), what
were known as rejects for $5.oo each. And even those were beautiful. Seems bout
every year the prices for the Traditionals goes to where the Gold Lables
(Exhibitions) was, and the Exhibitions just go up. You'd think the dang things
were made of Gold. One of the ones on ebay right now is an Emerald
Islethey are really sexy...gorgeous hook. And there's also a
Phillps Jones, VERY nice as well. This stuff is sick, lmao. Who'da ever thunk
it. But the dang things are just so beautiful.it's what Doc
Schwiebert was talkin' bout..Beauty. .

 By Woods Houghton

The eleventh day of the eleventh month,
 The day is Veterans Day
 Why this day
To take off time to play
 No! It is this day
 To stop and pray
 For those who have served,
 Those who are serving
The family of those who gave everything to serve
It was at the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleven month
Generals, Commanders, and the brass gathered
To sign the end of the Great War
The war to end all wars
It was not the end of all wars
As a family at a small country Church gather
Yes, another son will live without a father,
Another good woman will live without a husband
As the flag is folded and place in her hand
A tear runs down the face of the man from whose hand it came
The bugle makes it last call
For the brave young man who answered the same call
 As those before
It seem so inadequate to say
Thank you for your sacrifice today
 So, take the time
To give as they have given
A moment at the eleventh hour
 Of the eleventh day
 Of the eleventh month
To pray for those who serve
 Those left behind
Those who will grow up alone
 Today, Veterans Day

[VFB] fur\hair fly swap

2009-10-16 Thread jim phillips

Is your fly like the Buffalo Crane on pg 50 of the FFF Fly Pattern

I remember those coyote flys you sent. Some were productive. Thanks

[VFB] Re: Fur\Hair swap updates we now need 5 more people

2009-10-14 Thread jim phillips

I also have a couple pieces and both have different textures. One is curly and
other is straighter. Which is which?

In the FFF Fly Pattern Encyclopedia there is a Buffalo Crane Nymph I was
looking at but now thinking of using some natural Brown Llama. Should I twist
the stands to wrap the body or (ugh) dub the body?

Patrick

What kind of flys are you after? Just a fly with some fur or what?

Rules etc

I will signup; just need to know what you want.

I have been tying some chili jigs with Artic Fox tails and Steelhead Streamers
with some prohibited material . I just received some Llama that I need to
clean as well as some horse mane. I don't want to tie another deer hair dry
fly as this is the season to go deep down here.

John was also a no show on my just completed 36 streamer swap. He had been very
responsible in the past and always one of the first to send in his flys. I
sent him several messages but no response. In my opinion; something has
occurred to John and I pray that he is well.

If a person does notify me as the host that they have to drop out (Shit
happens!!), they are welcome anytime BUT if a person does not notify me as the
host; I will not let them join in on future swaps. Keeping it one on one is
best for all involved.

Whilst I can understand the feelings of people who are running swaps or entered
into swaps, and have to cope with dropouts who fail to apologize or give reason
for failing to complete their agreed task, Blacklists are an unwelcome and
ineffective way of getting flies in on time.
The last person I heard about in the US who really liked blacklists was Senator
Joseph McCarthy. It would be more effective to encourage good manners and
announce our dropping out as soon as is known.
The VFB is an unusual group of people, Poor to wealthy, Blue collar to
scientist, mostly without any connection or interest other than fishing flies.
Our commitments as individuals to house and work will of course result in these
individuals dropping off the grid from time to time. We should only wish them
well and hope they can feel welcome to return sometime.
But it would be polite for all of us to say if they are dropping out of the
damn swap.
iain

From: nev.gosl...@shaw.ca

It seems to me that we need to establish a blacklist of those persons who sign
up for a swap and then fail to communicate with the swap master or other swap
participants. It is ok if a person has to drop out for valid reasons, or even
if they have taken too much on and can't continue AS LONG AS THEY COMMUNICATE.
Those that do not communicate should be balcklisted and stuck off IMHO. BY
taking a position in the swap, it is quite possible that they have prevented
someone else from participating.

Some more info on PHWFF and The Branson outing. Way to go. Our Reno VA is
stalling on starting a Chapter here BUT they are opening a clinic in Susanville
and I am on the Volunteer roll there for PHWFF. Just mailed in 200 flys to the
East Coast Chapter and 200 to the west coast Chapter plus lots of feathers,
chennile, braid, mylar tubing, glass beads etc. Hooks are needed by both
chapters. If you want, I will send you their addresses.

I have been down for the last couple weeks due to anemia from the chemo (the VA
doesn't call it chemo but six horse pills an day and a weekly injection that
makes you feel like hell; sure feels like it) they have me going thru. The VA
FINALLY gave me some new meds to inject myself with and -- my energy is slowly
returning. $500 bucks a shot! So it had better work. My virus is below 350 and
thats from 37 million. Weight is at 170 (Four years ago I was at 280). Went
bowling last night and had two good games (193 and 182) then just pooped out
with a 132. Now to find me a fishing partner (VA will not let me drive as I
fall asleep too easily) that will drive and I can start using the Artic Fox

MARK SENDS

 Date: Tue, 15 Sep 2009 19:08:57 -0600

J.B., River Run Outfitters is where we're doin' the tyin' class on Sun. eve.
We've been there a couple times.nice little shop. Carolyn is a VERY nice
lady. We were there (Branson), for the International Women Fly Fishers Annual
(which is not actually annual sometimes, lol) Festival last Oct. Misako was on
the board of the IWFF for 4 years at one time and she chaired the Club Laison
Committee during that entire time and is now an International Ambassadore for
the IWFF through the Club Laison Committee. She, (sometimes we), goes to their
Festival most of the time.although we have missed a couple of
them...it's fun when all these girls get together.like a big
hen house and everybodies wearin' waders. lmaoseriously though, the
IWFF is a wild bunch of fly fishers, who are very dedicated. Last year i bought
Misako 3/4 days on the rivers in Scotland with Leslie Crawford.she's
the Joan Wullf of Scotland so-to-speak. Misa has known her every since round
2002 i think it was..when Leslie was on the Scotish team, the year the
WFFCCS was in France. Then she saw Leslie again in Portugal one
year.so i figured since she was already gonna be buyin' a ticket to go
to Scotland for the WFFCCS back in June...she might as well spend a few
days with Leslie before the Championship. Which she did..Misa was in
Scotland for i think it was a day short of a month..back in June...she
even got to fish the River Spey for Salmon one day. Hooked a few, didn't land
any. i was in the Jazz clubs in N.Y.C. hangin' out and seein' a
my old friends and co-workers.
Anyway, Leslie has been donating this four days of guiding to the IWFF Festival
Auction the last few times they have had a festivalshe's really the top
lady guide in Scotland and has a couple books outreal nice person.
Thankx for the tip on Tanneycomo. I'm not exactly sure who's in charge of the
guiding...we're just coaches.i think the people at Lilly's Landing are
the ones who got all the Guides together. I know one thing...Somebody
squared it so we don't have to buy a license and got us a Group Permit of
some kind, because it's a teaching event. I likes that. Our only expense for
this gig is gas back and forth.

River Run Outfitters is where we usually hang to swap lies. They’re just before
the turn-off to go down to the fishery next to the dam. Fins Feathers is half
a block away as well.
There’s a big hole near I believe the third outlet where I was fishing one
afternoon. I looked down as I was retying saw what I thought was a big
northern looking up @ me from the rim of the hole. When it turned to the side
to cruise the rim I realized it was a brown. Only thing I caught out of that
hole was a couple 15” rainbow a 24” sucker, but there’s some big browns in
that whole mile a half stretch down from the dam.

Ok, this will be my first swap as a host.

This will be a swap of Ernest Schwiebert Hairwing Salmon Flies

There are 12 openings in this swap

Please, to keep this one uniform all flies should be on #3 TUE,
 something like a Daiichi 2051

Let me know which pattern you will tie.

Each fly needs to be toe-tagged.

Flies should be shipped in a crush proof container, (think Altoids )

Send with a self-addressed AND stamped envelope.

Schwiebert had hairwings mentioned in Art Flick’s Master Fly-tying
 guide in 1972

I will be glad to post the names of these.

Flies should arrive to me by 20 October

Hi Dail, the Swallows Nest Fly Tyers is a very informal tyin' club my wife and
i started here in the Mt. Home area of Arkansas back round the first of the
year. We had 4/5 meetings at a local fly shop, but because not enough money was
being spent at the fly shop during those times.the management craped out on
us. They asked us to have the meetings there and then they flinched when we
didn't spend enough.go figure.
Now we are having the get-togethers at our house every Wed. eve. at 6 p.m.
You MUST call ahead (RSVP), to see if we'll be home or not, and so we will know
when to cut it off (it's a numbers game) on any given Wed. eve., as we have
limited parking here.
The club is a very relaxed type a deal.no official meetings, no programs,
no orders of business new or old (LMAO), no dues cept if you wanna buy a
pin.and that just goes to cover drinks and electricity, and is a once in a
lifetime purchase unless you want more. There are 15 lights in our tyin'
room.lol. But i would still suggest you bring a tyin' light with you. Three
of those lights are overheads in the cealing, 6 are table lamps, and the other
6 are permanately at my wife's and my tyin' positions/desks. So bring
one
870-431-8955 house
870-568-6512 house
870-329-9075 Misako's cell
870-575-2279 my cell
870-421-6563 OnStar in our truck.COME ONn

Looks like we should have the new Swallows Nest Fly Tyers pins ready for
Conclave and for sale at my table. Drop by and pick one up. They're $10 each,
and the money we make will go to cover expenses for throwin' the meetings at
our house. Drinks, electricity, etc., etc. Not a bad deal for a one time fee.
All club members will be required to buy a pin (sooner or later, lol) as a
lifetime membership donation, lmao.

well.Joyce.i didn't know he was in Hamilton.that's the
Bitteroot River right there and it's real good through there. I spent over a
week there last year, during the more than two months i was in Montana.lost
a HUGE Brown on that river..dang thing ran so fast he got my line all in a
birds nest in no time and broke off...shoulda had my drag set tighter.
Hooked him usin' one of my all-time old favorite standards.a yellow Marabou
Muddler.
Always have loved that fly for fishin' deep riffles. And the Bitteroot is a
fantastic river. i'll give your boy a shout. TKX. again, mark. p.s. nice
guy name Chuck runs a little fly shop there..great tyer, and a real
conservationist. i use to see hm at Conclave.but not the last few

[VFB] FW: John Foust hackle pliers

FROM MARK

i read the Foust interviewvery cool. my mind was reelin' with memories
of the Bitteroot...dang! i wish i was back there.
Montana is just such The REAL DEAL.i just gotta Thing for WILD
Trout...it's such a shame that greed has just ruined the situation most
everywhere elsestocked fish...pityfull
substituteeven though the White River here is as good as it gets in
terms of stocked fish...it pales in comparison with the Bitteroot
and dozens and dozens of other rivers in Montana...i'm speakin'
of that feelin' you get when you release a Wild fish in
Montana...somethin' you have to experience to understand..no
matter where you are in Montana, you let the fish go...and look up at your
surroundingsthere's just nothin' like
it...lol.and there's thousands of places to fish a
by yourself...i've never gone to the river here and not seen lots of
other fisherman..bait cans, corn cans, beer cans, along the river, all that
crap.
oh wel.i just keep a garbage bag in the truck and pick it up.
i can't wait for the day the FFF let's us know that Conclave will be in
West again next year.YES Talk bout leave ya a little somethin' to
look forward toOH YEAH!
That river we fishin Loveland, CO. at Conclave this year is a great stream
though.hasn't been stocked in over 20 years and has the second highest
bio-mass of any river in Colorado after the Frying Pan. It's amazing what's
possible, if the political will is there.but it takes a United (GREAT
tune by Woody Shaw), bunch of people to make the scumbag element do the right
thing.
write that down.

time for bed.4:30 p.m. and i been up since midnight.

I have a buddy that is the only guy I know that saves money tying flies. He
ties 10 patterns that he believes he can take just about anywhere and only owns
the stuff for them. His whole kit fits in a shoebox. If he gets somewhere that
requires a special, he just buys 'em.

tools...that was spoken like a true fly shop owner, lmao.
suck 'em in easy...sink the fangs...and Drink the Blood.
i'd have to say that if you wanna save money.buy your
flies.course, that's only if your gonna buy what you need for your
fishin', and that's IT. But nobody does that..most fly fishers, and ALL
fly tyers, collect flies. So there goes a certain amount of $ right there. i
have no way Jose' of a way to know what i have invested in vises, tools,
materials, hooks and beads..but it's a small fortune by any stretch of the
imagination. When you add in the VHS videos, DVD's, books, and all the rest of
it...not to mention the artwork, and the tackle and gearOH, and the
canoe and the kick boatwell, let's just say.Choices.
Besides, who needs a villa in San Tropea anyway. LMAO! ..did a mention
the fly collection?

Most people say that tying flies to save money is a fallacy. What do you think?

Well, I have sort of a different take on that. I tell most people it'll cost
them $350 to $400 to really get into fly tying. That's tools, materials-
everything you need to tie flies for fishing. That might seem like a bunch of
money, but compared to the price of a lot of rods and reels, that's not bad.
And for that money, I point out that they'll be getting a whole lot of flies in
return. If you're smart about it, and you fish a lot, tying your own flies is
a pretty good deal.'

All club members will be required to buy a pin (sooner or later, lol) as a
lifetime membership donation, lmao.

of all the dubbings i have, the Arizona is my
favorite. SPECIALLY the Simi Seal. it has the LONGEST fibers of any dubbing
i've ever bought, which is PERFECT for me, since i love to pick out my bodies.
For years i had to blend all my own dubbings (for artistic flies), because
right out of the package they were always to one thing. If you wanted a
blended look to them...you hadda blend them...which was time
consumming. actually the blending process is fun, but the Arizona is already
blended. It comes with a nice Mix of colors in each color. So you can use it
right outta the package if you like. i sometimes still blend it, lol. i was a
big fan of SLF before i found Arizona. i've got a CRAP LOAD of dubbing to use
up.so i use it when doin' flies that will sell for less, or that will be
donated, etc., etc. But the Arizona goes on the expensive hooks with the
expensive beads, and the expensive gut eyes. NOW, to see this new line of
dubbing he says he has.and the word is, it's got even LONGER
fibersYES!
Alan.you must become one with the dubbing...LMAO.

Check out these two tying videos from john Rohmer of Arizona Fly Fishing.

The products he is demoing are also on sale at his website. Just click on the
Home and follow for the materials.

I have most of the colors in the Diamond Braid. It is almost identical to the
Simi Seal dubbing but it has been twisted together and forms a braid.

I just hate to dub, so I use the braid. The flies turn out the same but I have
to scrub a little bit more to get the fibers to pull out on the leach.

if you want to tie the monnow you will have to use the dubbing.

I will try, but just seems like too much work, when there are other ways of
doing the same thing.
At least that is my take on it.

On his tying supplies wall, there are 24 colors of the new Mega Simi Seal.

I'm sure John will send them to you if you order them.

He can blend any color you want. He has done that for me.

If you want I can send you all the colors he has. Just let me know.

Keith Fulsher uses a bullet shell for a hair stackerin my early days of
tyin', i use to go to the Garmet district (Furiurs in the 30's on the west side
off Broadway), and get all kinds of fur scraps for free. Four/five different
fox furs, mink, chinchila, sable, etc., etc., etcsecond year ('03)
i went to Montana for the FFF I.C., in West Yellowstone, i went to a Pow
Wow.and got all kinna skins, Skunk, Cyote, Badger, Bobcat, Beaver,
Wolverine, Wolf tails, Muskrat, Goat, black and brown Bear, you name
it...and silver linned glass beads in every color and size...and all of
it was super cheap. Ya gotta 100 TeePees all set up and every one has the same
Stuff. All you gotta do is run back and forth with, but he told me...but

It has been a LONG time since I have posted. Here is my two cents on the
saving money.

You can save money tying flies. However, you must be willing to spend extra
time to procure and manufacture supplies and equipment.

1) find a taxidermist. Lots of material can be had for free - including some
pretty exotic stuff (chamois or one of the many African antelopes for example).
2) find a trapper or hunter. I have a huge supply of materials from the hunts
that I have gone on, and from my waterfowling friends. Grouse, pheasant, deer,
rabbit, turkey, etc. free for the taking. You can get hungarian pats, exotic
pheasants, quail at local game ranches, and hooking up with those hunters can
pay off big. (I hunt these places on occasion, and have a nice stockpile of
feathers and good eating.) Have gotten scraps of muskrat, otter, etc. from
trappers, but trapping materials derived from trapping harder to come by. You
can buy a lifetimes supply in one skin much cheaper than through a supply house.
3) Dying your own. Can be cheap if you use Rit Dyes and vinegar for a fixer.
However, dying your own may not be cost effective for dubbing. Peroxide from
local beauty shops has the proper concentration peroxide for bleaching.
4) alternative sourcing- local hardware store for wire, materials for tools
(see below). Local five and dime's are great sources for hard as nails, nail
poish, cork, foam sheet, various cements and glues, tinsels, etc. often cheaper
than supply houses
5) make your own tools- I make some of my own tools. Bodkins from a piece of
brass with a uphoulstry needle. Dubbing brushes from velcro epoxied to a
bamboo chopstick, or a .22 cal cleaning brush epoxied to a piece of brass.

Look up Leisers Fly Tying Materials, Modern Flytying Materials by Talleur, or
Dyeing and Bleaching, Second Edition: Natural Fly-Tying Materials by Best.
Might borrow from library or buy one used.

I find that my biggest expenses other than a vise (I use a modified Renzetti
traveler, but started with a Thompson Ultra) Still have the ultra, and have
three other simple cheap vises around. Hackle pliers and bobbin. In terms of
material, dry fly hackle is the big one. Concentrate on a good grizzly, medium
dun, and a brown. Buy hooks strategically, a #12 dry fly hook can be weighted
with fine copper wire to make an nymph or soft hackle hook. You do NOT have to
buy two packs of a hundred.

You can make flytying as cheap or as expensive as you want. I prefer to keep
it on the cheap side.
 Eric Worm

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a
hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a
wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act
alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a
computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization
is for insects.

He really is a great asset to fly fishing.
A couple of years ago at one of the Outdoor/Boat/Hunting/Fishing Expo's Charles
Meck was there and I bought one of his books. He and John Rohmer wrote the
book. I later had John sign the book for me.
It seems as though Charles is a Snow Bird and comes to Arizona to fish. Some
how he and John got together and wrote Arizona Trout Streams and their
Hatches.

of all the dubbings i have, the Arizona is my

This is the recipe that Mr. John Foust shared with me of his Baler hopper. He
ties on legs of several strands of orange baling twine. He and his wife, Edna,
are now retired, but he still ties flies and was kind enough to let me purchase
two of his most wonderful hackle pliers . I think they are the best hackle
pliers on the market, bar none. Let me know if you can read this OK. Joyce
Here are the photos that I want to share with you.I sent these photos using

I'm fine. I have another minor operation scheduled in October to
tweek my plumbing, and if that goes well, I will be pretty much the
same as I was before the surgery (just a little extra gear added)!

I haven't posted much out of laziness more than anything else. Plus I
didn't have a lot to say. I spent a good deal of my summer trying to
get my new boat to actually run, in fact we had the first fully
successful run last night! We nick-named her the Hell-bitch after
Captain Call's famous horse (from the movie Lonesome Dove), like the
horse, the motor is touchy, but fast when it gets going, it will
cruise at about 45 mph which probably isn't particularly fast for a
bass boat, but fast enough for me. It is an older boat, a 1990
Ranger with a 150 HP 1996 Evinrude engine (2 stroke). It needed
about $650.00 in carb work and a little trial and error to finally get
it to run properly. I have to ride the choke or have someone pump
the fuel ball when bringing it up to speed on a cold start or it will
stall during the initial acceleration. It probably will need a new
fuel pump eventually, but I'm going to live with the work around for
now. Once it gets up to speed and warmed up, it works great.

I did do some fishing at Hebgen Lake (my first time) I stayed at a
nice little private campground on the Madison arm. Get ready by 8:00
am, carry the pontoon boat 30 feet, and your in the water. For two or
three hours each morning I had pretty steady action stripping tandem
BHPT nymphs, (the Gulpers never got going for dry fly fishing), but
the fish were there, feeding in the weed beds. The biggest problem I
had was break-offs, I think I landed only 1 fish for every five I
hooked! They are big fish and easy to break off with the 5x tippet I
was using, since they were smart enough to dive for the weed beds.

(Click To Enlarge) GRAY'S SPORTING JOURNAL _ We're very pleased to let you know
that I have an illustrated essay in the current issue of Gray's Sporting
Journal. We hope that you'll enjoy, A Late Summer Walk, which begins on page 22
of the September/October issue. If you don't subscribe to this fine sporting
journal, you should consider it. THE ALASKA CHRONICLES - I've guided many of
you in Alaska. Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at a
fishing lodge? Miles Nolte's insightful and honest description of a summer in
Alaska, working as a guide at a remote lodge is destined to become a cult
classic. I first became aware of Miles and his now infamous post, The AK
Chronicles, on the Drake Magazine's message board. We have a limited supply of
The Alaska Chronicles available. Buy it from us and we'll include the official
sticker, which I designed. I promise, you won't be disappointed!
SPEAKING OF ALASKA I ve just returned from Alaska where I hosted a wonderful
week of fly fishing at Royal Coachman Lodge. It was great to work with the crew
there while they showed ten of my good friends the best that southwest Alaska
has to offer. In the process I met Steve Carter, a pilot for the lodge, and
learned that he s one hell of a photographer. Some photographers spend a lot of
money to travel to Steve s back yard, and hope for the best. Steve spends five
months a year in the bush and records every day of it with his camera. You owe
it to yourself to check out his work. Enjoy!
ARGENTINA - Join us in Argentina from January 30th to February 6th for a hosted
week of fly fishing. In addition to 22 miles of the Malleo River within San
Huberto's boundaries, our group of just 12 fishermen will also have access to a
very remote stretch of the Alumine River, and Lago Tromen. If you have
questions or would like additional information, please let us know as soon as
possible, as our groups usually come together quite quickly. Update: we still
have four spots available!
FLY FISHING DREAMS - My old friend David Lambroughton cut his teeth as an
Alaskan guide, at Bristol Bay Lodge, almost 30 years ago. Since then he's
become known worldwide as a steelhead fisherman, fly designer, guide, and
perhaps most importantly, an internationally renowned photographer. We're
honored to offer you his 2010 calendar, Fly Fishing Dreams. This large handsome
calendar features two beautiful photographs for each month, and all the bells
and whistles. Order two... one for home and another for the office!
A GENTLEMAN'S FIRESIDE DIARY - If you enjoy the Thursday Morning Art Review,
then you'll treasure the latest book to which I've contributed. We're very
proud to offer a limited number of, A Gentleman's Fireside Diary. This handsome
book is a collection of essays, poems, and short stories thoughtfully written
by sportsmen like us, and brilliantly edited by Ryan Doughty, with an evocative
forward by Dez Young. The book is illustrated with over twenty of my pencil
drawings, and I'm honored to have contributed two essays. Each copy includes a
signed original pencil drawing on the title page. When you order, please
specify your favorite fly or game bird feather.

He who would travel happily must travel light.
- Antoine de Saint-Exuprey (1900 - 1944)
As the train went up the track on it's way to Marquette, Dan and the boy
shouldered their packs and stepped across the rails and onto the sad little
main street of Seney. Most of the town s buildings had long since been
abandoned. I'm sure that the general store is still open, Dan said as they
walked down the path, overgrown with weeds. They stopped in front of a stone
foundation, fire-scarred and hollow. The depression within had begun to heal,
and the fireweed and sweet fern danced in the cool breeze. That's where the
old Grondin Hotel once stood.
They bought dried peas, smoked bacon, and a loaf of heavy, dark bread at the
store, and learned that there was a group of fern gatherers and berry pickers
from Grand Marias camped on the high ground above the Little Fox. That's just
a few miles up the old spur line. The shopkeeper told them.
Dan and the boy walked west out of town, along the railroad track to the steel
bridge. The river was there, narrow, fast, and smooth, clear but tea-colored,
with a pebbly bottom. They stood and watched the trout keeping themselves
steady in the current with wavering fins. They watched them for a long time.

Nick Lyons.one of my all-time favorite fly fishing authors.who is
prolly more famous as a publisher, (the Lyons Press), almost came to tears one
time when i asked him to sign a book that Middleton had written, (and that he
had editied).Rivers of Memory i believe is the title. I'll check that when
i go downstairs next. Nick told me that he REALLY missed Harry, and went on to
tell me some personal things about the man.which i won't share here. It was
apparent to me that he loved him very much. I had just given him a box of flies
i had tyed, as a thankx for him havin' read my novella (written in '99), and
the critique he had sent me. And i wanted to also thank him for the hugely
generous gift of a very large part of his own fly collection that he had
donated to the CFFCM a few months earlier. That, was on display in the museum
(during the time we lived there), for at least a year and had flies in it by
a kinds of heavyweights that i knew i may never have the chance to see
again, Charles De Feo for one..
If you've never read anything by Nick Lyons.please treat yourself, and the
same goes for Harry Middleton.

Hi Ya Joe..this is crazy googanheimer.lmao. 8:16 a.m. and i
haven't been to bed yet.did three flies last night and didn't even get
started til 3:00 a.m. Just put out the garbage for pick up today.just a
bit tired.
We first fished the Battenkill in '93...we were up in Vermont attending the
Orivs school in Manchester. We went back and fished it again several times
after that. The whole stretch where it leaves Vermont, turning west in that
little town where the Norman Rockwell Museum is and running into New York, past
Shushen on the way, is a great stretch of water. I had a great day behind the
Shushen post office in that riffle one time.bout 20 Bows. I have a framed
fly tyed by Dick Talleur.the Shushen Postmaster, named after the postmaster
of that very same post office in Shushen. Dick did 200 of them for TGF one
year, and a bunch of us (TGF members) got together and framed all 200 in one
eve. at Jane Timken's house in Manhattan. They were given to any member who
would re-up his dues for a three year period at one timeof course
we fell right into that trap, lmao. Obviously those frames weren't to
elaborate, lol. i later transfered mine to a more appropriate frame. The
Battenkill isn't what it once was.but still worth a pilgramidge. And
everybody should go to the American Museum of Fly Fishing at least once. We've
been there 3 times and i still wanna go back one more time some
day.well. It's 8:30 and i still gotta go downstairs one more time.
Another coat of Sally'slol. mark.

Mark -

I know what you mean about fishing the classic rivers. Like you, I started
my trout fishing in the northeast, but I was further north than you. My first
experiences were on the Battenkill where it swings briefly across the Vermont /
New York line. My favorite hole was down stream from the bridge at Shushen,
New York. That was where I caught my first trout on a fly - a 10 brown on an
Adams dry ... How classic can you get? My first trout on a fly was with a dry,
but I soon went along with the trend and became a wet fly fisherman and to this
day I seldom fish a dry fly - althoough I still carry a box of them with me
every time I hit the stream.

Would of been cool to have got to meet the cat..unfortunately, he died
in 1914. At least we did get to know several people who spent their lives
knowing several people who did know T.G. We were so fortunate to start, and
spend the first 20 years of our fly fishing lives, in the Catskills. And to be
members of the board of directors of the Theodore Gordon Flyfishers and on the
Conservation Committee for 15 years. And to be able to go on a lot of fun
fishing trips with the club and visit the Anglers Club in lower Manhattan a few
times at TGF Dinners, was terriffic. That place is amazing. We saw flies
actually tyed by T.G. there, amoung so many other things. But most of
all.it is to have fished all the same rivers he did, the Neversink..the
Beaverkill.the Willowemoc.the Esophus.the Callicoon.the East
and West Branches of the Delaware and the Delaware.sacred waters.
If you've never been there.GO! Go at least once before you
die...you must make your pilgrimage to the home of American dry fly
fishing. Wet flies were already being fished on the Battenkill in Vermont and
on the Broadhead in Pennsylvainia (on the legendary Henryville water), before
fly fishing came to the Catskills.but Dry Fly fishing.it ALL
started in the Catskillsso, if you wanna make it into
heavennuff said?
P.S. don't forget to visit the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum when your
thereour first home in the Catskills, was an apartment on top of
the gift shop there, for 17 and a half months..great times.great
memories. GO!

That's it alright. We got it in '95 i think it wasa Gang of the Juliana
girls (Misa included), outta Manhattan, all went up to the
Miramachi in New Brunswhich(sp?).for a Salmon fishin' trip. They stayed at
Pond's resort..and i think it was one of those girls that gave the book to
Misa for a gift...or somethin' like that. i remember we all got together,
(the same gang of girls and their better halves), for a dinner party in Philly
exactly one year later to hang out. And they served this one and only Grisle,
that one of them had caught on the trip.flash frozen and brought home on
dry ice. Somebody did somethin' to it with lemon juice and we all ate it, as an
appitizer. was GOOD too...although i felt a bit quilty eating
something that should of been returned to the waterbut what's a fella
to do? It was already dead.
i remember being inspired that night in Philly too.because the guy who was
the husband of the lady who's house we ate at, took us up to his tyin'/tackle
room and showed us all kinna cool Stuff. That was when i decided i hadda have
a tyin' room, lmao.

fly tying. For more information please go to www.unitedflytyers.org.

Yes- ring eye like my larger ring eyed Mustads. If you are not planning to use
them, I could put them to good use.

Dang, and we're gonna be there next year..course it'll be in May
anywayprolly to soon for the run. The friends we'll be staying with,
live on Pendor Island.in that body of water between Vancover Island and the
mainland of B.C., Canada. So we'll be movin' around from there. But the Fraser
is one of the rivers they fish quite a bit. We're also gonna fish the Campbell
River on Vancover Island, because i GOTTA go see the Roderick Haig Brown Museum
and fish that water at least once. Anyway, thankx for the linkcool
site. I bookmarked it. OH! and btw, you'll get two packages of the
hooks.i've got more and can get more free anyway. So i hope they work out
for ya. If it's better for you to go bigger than size 10, rather than smaller
with the size 12. lemme know.and i'll look and see if i have a size 8.
mark.

I'll tell you what I need them for. Every odd numbered 2nd year, there is a run
of pink salmon (humpback) to this part of British Columbia - basically the
Fraser River sytem. Every even numbered year - the pinks run to other areas of
BC- notably the Queen Charlotte Islands in northern BC.

I have usually fished for pinks in the Fraser in past years, and although I
have caught them in saltwater I was never as successful as I felt I should have
been. it seems that I have been using flies that are too big, because the
pinks in saltwater feed on euphasid aka krill which are small - hence the size
10 hooks. I didn't know that you could get saltwater hooks in size 12. I will
try and post a photo of the type of fly that I am tying in the File Section of
Google groups.

Tkx. J.B., i really like the new hooks Jens Pilgaard has come up with.some
of them have just incredable shapes. In fact all of them, depending on what you
like. http://www.flytying.dk Some are so wild i'm sure they might not appeal to
everyone. Take a look. You'll see where to click.
