Re: FW: [VFB] Re: ffisher tyer or collector?

2009-08-27 Thread Anthony Spezio
Well, I guess you people were the ones that ground the pair for me back at the
SLC show.
I am real pleased with them, very sharp point. You also told me that the old
Thompson scissors I showed you were made by Anvil. I tied for Gudebrod at three
of the SLC shows.

Hey DonO
You were VERY lucky to get them back at all, my first show was Denver
that was the year we introduced the  Anvil Apex Vise, the next show I
was working the booth in Salt Lake , Don and Barb worked the third
show with David. Thats the year I couldn't go and  David, Don and Barb
met you that year and we still use the mouse you gave Barb to display
in our vise at shows. I  didn't see you the next year but I do
remember sharpening the points on the scissors for a few of the tyers
one of them may have been you. In Denver. the next year I was with
Don,Barb and David and was  told I was going to get to meet one of the
best tyers  that was you (I somehow I came home with a flexo-fish )
that was at least  two years ago. Now all current scissor will  have a
true  needle point  even sharper than the Thompson's we use to make .
Looking forward to seeing you again at the show. Denver of course.

2009-08-21 Thread Anthony Spezio
Rene,
You have the right to have and use as many tools as you want. The tyer with the
most tools is the winner even if you don't use them all. LOL   I can't tell you
how many tools I have accumulated over the years that I don't use. I have not
picked up a whip finisher in over 25 years, I have about a dozen hackle pliers
but use only one. Scissors ? I use two, one straight and one curved, I will
quit here.
Have a good day.

Hi Tony and friends,
I don't feel bad anymore when I look into my toolbox with all these
scissors.
Right now I'm tying for Iain's 2nd wet fly swap, have 6 scissors on the
bench, use all of them for the pattern. Not for each fly but for the 1st
fly I used the curved small one, for the second fly this strait
surgical... Well, to cut the thread at the head and for the tinsel
it's always the same, I mean one for the thread and one for the tinsel.
On the other side:
for 90% of my tying I use 4 tools only:
vise
bobbin
scissor(s)
needle.

Whip by hand. Have so many specialized tools, need only 4.
Ok, sometimes my wirl for dubbing loops. Sometimes I recognize, there

[VFB] Re: ffisher tyer or collector?

2009-08-21 Thread Anthony Spezio
Those were made by Anvil.
My old pair are serrated and I can't find anyone to sharpen them. I still use
them for cutting thread when wrapping rods, not really good for deer hair
anymore.

I have had these Thompsons since 1985 and they
still cut great.
They both have the red handles.
One pair have the large finger loops that I have
bent so that they sit on the tying table and you can pick them up
easily.
The other pair is like what a barber would

  Alan,
If these are the old "Thompson Ice" they were
made by Anvil. The new ones are not. I was told this by the Anvil
people
at the SLC show when I bought the special pair of Anvil. My Old
Thompson

I just checked & the pair I usually use are Dr. Slicks. The only problem I ever
had was when they got knocked onto a concrete floor & I had to regrind the
tips. I had a pair of Anvils, but I couldn’t find them. I’m guessing the wacky
Italian broad has them w/ her basket weaving tools…

Don,
Not downgrading DR Slick but I had a problem with them These were the early
ones. The pivot point kept loosening up and the scissors would not cut. It was
a hassle so I just put them in the junk box. At the same show I had the Anvil
scissors ground for me, I talked to the Slick People at their booth. They said
they had corrected that problem and gave me a set of scissors. I am real
pleased with my Anvil scissors that I never did use the Slicks.. Maybe I should
get them out when I start tying again.

I like both my Anvils and my Dr. Slicks. If I had to choosegood thing I
don't. ;o)

I have a 1.25" x 10" lg. dia. ceramic pump plunger from a glycol pump, and it
works great with a little oil as a sharpener. When I get to the serrated
scissors, that's a little tricky. I sharpen them up and then use the roughest
Lanski stone to make one hard pass to roughen the edge, so it's almost as good
as a factory serrated scissors.

Wow, Salt Lake City...that was like a decade ago, wasn't it? I was tying for
Dr. Tom Whiting at his booth.

Whenecer I see Anvil or Dyna-King at their booths, I lend them a Fantasy Fly of
some sort- usually a Flexo-fish or a mouse, for a draw fly. Hardest part is
getting it back.

My choice is Anvil Hands down.
I have about 20 pair and use the Anvil 99% of the time. They ground a special

Come to think of it, that was the year I met Don O and Jerry Goldsmith at that
show.

Don,
Not downgrading DR Slick but I had a problem with them These were the early
ones. The pivot point kept loosening up and the scissors would not cut. It
was a hassle so I just put them in the junk box. At the same show I had the
Anvil scissors ground for me, I talked to the Slick People at their booth.
They said they had corrected that problem and gave me a set of scissors. I
am real pleased with my Anvil scissors that I never did use the Slicks..
Maybe I should get them out when I start tying again.

I like both my Anvils and my Dr. Slicks. If I had to choosegood thing I
don't. ;o)

I have a 1.25" x 10" lg. dia. ceramic pump plunger from a glycol pump, and
it works great with a little oil as a sharpener. When I get to the serrated
scissors, that's a little tricky. I sharpen them up and then use the
roughest Lanski stone to make one hard pass to roughen the edge, so it's
almost as good as a factory serrated scissors.

Wow, Salt Lake City...that was like a decade ago, wasn't it? I was tying
for Dr. Tom Whiting at his booth.

Whenecer I see Anvil or Dyna-King at their booths, I lend them a Fantasy Fly
of some sort- usually a Flexo-fish or a mouse, for a draw fly. Hardest part
is getting it back.

[VFB] Re: ffisher tyer or collector?

2009-08-20 Thread Anthony Spezio
Don,
Not downgrading DR Slick but I had a problem with them These were the early

[VFB] Re: ffisher tyer or collector?

2009-08-20 Thread Martin Westbeek

Got 6 scissors or so. I bought my favorite pair 10 years ago from a fellow
tier at a show in Germany, and it is still going strong. The other one I use
most of the time is a tung.carbide scissors. Also have one pair of surgical
scissors I swapped with a surgeon for a dozen of sea trout flies. Very nice
for delicate work.
I want my scissors to be sharp and stay sharp, and I want to be able to keep
them in my hand (or on my middle finger) when I tie.
I have noticed that I have become so used to tying this way with both my fav
scissors that I'm all thumbs when I use different scissors.

As for fly tying material: collector - me?
:-)

Anvil scissors are made specifically for fly tying. They're made in
by the Vogel brothers in their machine shop in Columbus, Indiana.
They are both fly fishers and fly tyers (although they have been so
busy making scissors and vises that they have little time to enjoy
their sport). They also make scissors designed specifically for
special fields, including hair dressers and dog groomers.

I believe Slick scissors were originally designed for surgeons, but
I'm not sure. I think that's why they were originally called "Dr.
Slick".

Dr. Slick and Anvil have really good scissors for fly-tying. They make them

for different uses, and I've found that they are actually focused like that.

I have a synthetics scissors for foam and plastics. Doesn't work well for
hair at all.
I have 'big-finger' scissors
and spring-loaded scissors (hold in palm kind)
and my long-jawed German steel scissors that I serrate myself for big hair
flies
and my teensy-tiny scissors for midges
and my junk scissors for cardboard and some thin leathers
and a office scissors for thick leathers
and a hair scissors that doubles as a moustache trimmer
and memory fails me after that

I have maybe 10 to 15 scissors. A few are V. Mueller units. Definitely
designed for surgery. Definitely can
be used for fly tying. Great scissors.

I have used surgical scissors. I also have an expensive German pair that
the seamstresses use. But my favorite one costs $1 at the swap meet here
(like a flea market) They are the squeeze type. They are quite sharp with
nice pointed tips. And when they go - well they served their purpose.

[VFB] Re: ffisher tyer or collector?

2009-08-20 Thread J Balmer

I own a few pair, but I could easily use a razor instead. Generally, I use
the edge to cut thread rather than snipping. About the only time I use the
scissors as a scissors is when I'm cutting hair or fur off a skin. I use a
razor blade when I'm shaping packed hair or foam. As to being designed for
tying, as long as they're sharp & fit your hand comfortably, does it really
matter?
